The only problem I see with watching in chronological order is the face off with the sword fighters. In Temple of Doom it was supposed to be a call back to when he casually shot the guy in Raiders after all his theatrics, but in Temple it’s supposed to be kind of funny when he realizes that he doesn’t have his gun on him.

yeah. watching any film series in chronological order if you've never seen them is always a bad idea. Not sure why people do this.

      @starlighter93 8 месяцев назад +14

Well, it sort of works but in a different way. This way it's sort of a progression. Back then he didn't have his gun and that got him into trouble. Later on he made sure he has his gun.

      There's more than that.
In "Raiders" he's a skeptical science-only atheist despite having not just witnessing a few, but *summoning* a divine miracle, from *another religious tradition* he wasn't even brought up in, a year before flying off to Egypt to find Moses's luggage. By 1936, not only should he be more open minded to the supernatural, he would be a full-on fundamentalist Hindu

You made a comment about how these are like "Adventure Bond" movies. These were sort done as a spiritual successor to Bond films. Lucas and Speilberg were already good friends before working on this. Lucas thought Star Wars was going to bomb, so he went to Hawaii to kind of hide out so he didn't have to hear what the box office numbers were like. Spielberg went with him. Spielberg expressed to Lucas his desire to direct a Bond film and Lucas told him "I've got something better than Bond", and proceeded to tell him about archaeologist Indiana Smith, who, because Spielberg thought the name was too similar to "Nevada Smith", a character played by Steve McQueen in a movie of the same name, Lucas said "Fine, we'll call him Indiana Jones." And then of course, by the time we get to Last Crusade, there was only one actor they wanted to play Indy's father. James Bond himself.

the costume designer of the first Indy film admitted that the Indiana Jones costume was taken from Charlton Heston's role in "Secret of the Incas" - a 1950s film which can be seen on youtube - she even said that she was surprised that the earlier film wasn't credited cuz it was watched so much by the Indy crew during the filming - and certain elements found their way into the Indy film - especially with the use of light to pinpoint the location of the treasure

Oh Coby who suggested watching these in chronological order? It's not as bad as telling someone to watch Star Wars in chronological order, but close.
All of these classic franchises should be seen in release order. Watching them in release order lets you see them as the world saw them when they came out. Besides, if you watch them chronologically you're inviting spoilers. Everybody knows what I'm talking about.
    Just my opinion.

A lot of movies have been filmed there, but the set design for those scenes was some of the best I've ever seen. _Tiny_ details that no viewer will ever be able to see. Indiana Jones was supposed to be James Bond set in the Thirties but doing archeology, not espionage, not "licensed to kill." Travel to exotic lands, meet new people in strange cultures, kill them--oops! Like the James Bond movies, the first act is an entire adventure--that has some connection to the main adventure. In the Last Crusade, Dr Jones Sr is working on the Grail diary during the initial scene and cannot be disturbed.
In the beginning of "The Last Crusade" that "husky" was the famous dog Indiana. On the Disneyland Railroad there used to be Indiana's doghouse between Main Street Station and New Orleans Station.
Another person pointed this out to me--Indiana Jones never gets the item he was after. What happened to the Ark, the magical stone, the Holy Grail, the Crystal Skull and the Dial of Destiny?

I don't recall anything in Temple that would have spoiled or caused confusion from having not seen Raiders, so I suppose in this case, chronological order is not so bad.
    They're mostly "standalone" films.
But normally, for a first-time viewing of any series with prequels and spinoffs, it's always best to abide by the theatrical release order, simply because the stories are written in such a way that key reveals and backstory elements are disclosed accordingly, and assuming to watch "in chronological order' can leave more questions than answers, distracting from staying present during the film. I've seen where people watch prequels and ask a thousand questions and are confused about what is going on (and then blame the movie for "not being very good") - something that would not have happened had they watched the original series of films first, which would have explained everything and answered all those questions, lol.
    EDIT : 44:18 ; 44:55
    Hahaha, case in point. ;-)
Golden Rule for movie anthology viewing for n00bs : ALWAYS watch for the first time in the ORIGINAL RELEASE order - after that, watch in whatever order you like. Avoid all the questions and confusion.

Also, the hieroglyphs in the Well of Souls have R2-D2 and C-3po in them. And, the plane in the beginning of Raiders has the number OB-CPO.
The guy talking to them before boarding Lao Che's plane is Dan Akroyd.
Donovan is the AT-AT walker commander in The Empire Strikes Back, and one of the agents in Raiders is Porkins in SW A New Hope.
Indy was supposed to fight the Cairo Swordsman but had food poisoning and shooting him was Harrison's idea to avoid the scene.

It was shot on location in the courtyard of the Arts & Crafts School of Almería, in South East Spain, not too far from where I'm from (most exterior scenes from that part of the movie where in the Almería area). I totally get what you mean about how old movies sometimes looked kind of fake in so many shots filmed on actual location such as this one. My guess is that it's due to the fact that the shot has both natural lighting and a lot of extra sources of artifical light pointing at the characters, so the end result is not too natural and can make our brains just assume that those actors were shot separately from the background.

I actually really like that you watched them in chronological order. I think I as a kid saw Doom first, just because of the practicality of myself being not a baby when DOOM aired on HBO free preview weekends, so I never had the endless comparisons to Willie not being as brave or kickass of a girl as Marion which most people complain about. This remedy's that problem, so that Indy upgrades to a girl who's more his style. Kate is great comic relief when she's not just in comparison to someone else.

Ford actually appeared in a nice little cameo in the YOUNG INDIANA JONES show, which was released across 3 sets of DVDs. They combined two episodes each into one "movie".
Ford is in MYSTERY OF THE BLUES.
Whole show is a great watch, but its more historical adventure, where he as a child and as a young men meets and witnesses historical events and people instead of ancient mystical relics.
It is great even considering the advances in TV SFX and composition.

In the 3rd (last crusade), in the scene you say you see the outline of the hats and so on, because you say it is a green screen.
It is not at all, it is a real location, in Spain (Almería more specifically if I am not mistaken).
Initially Spielberg and the production would have wanted to do it in The Alhambra (Granada, Spain 🇪🇸), but they did not obtain permission to film there.
The car ride along that street with Salah is also Almería , just as the desert part is the Tabernas Desert, in the same province of Almería, considered the only desert in the territory of Europe…the motorcycle chase was also in Spain...

I have the DVD collection of the whole series, and I highly recommend it for both Indy fans and fans of early 20th century history. Indy interacts with numerous famous historical characters in each episode, and the DVDs contain documentaries on a bunch of them: Albert Schweitzer, Sigmund Freud, Pablo Picasso, Ned Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, the Red Baron, and many more. Very educational *and* entertaining. Sean Patrick Flannery (college-age Indy) said that the actors were given a huge stack of historical information to review before filming each episode, so that they would understand what was actually happening in that time and place.
The episodes were repackaged a few times over the years, for broadcast in either one- or two-hour time slots. In one incarnation, most episodes began with "old Indy" (elderly, with an eye patch) in our time, reminiscing about an item someone is looking at. This transitions into his younger self going through an adventure. These "old Indy" segments weren't included on the DVDs, and I'm disappointed about that. Still a lot of fun though.
The writers were also working on 20+ episodes for a third season, before it got cancelled. Would have loved to see what they would have created.

It's good they did not go "bouncing around" in time. Going back to 200 BC was incredibly risky.
    Butterfly Effect.
    You just never know.
I thought for sure, when Achemedes took the watch off that dude, and handed it to Indy, that Indy was gonna die in 200 BC and be buried with the watch, and that ancient corpse they found wearing the watch was actually Indy. One of those time travel infinite redundancy loops or something.
Let's say that happened - could you imagine, being an archaeological adventurer, and finding an ancient tomb with a mysterious trinket (like a wristwatch) not supposed to be invented yet... and it turns out that corpse is actually YOU? You discover your own tomb and remains? And don't know it?
This is why I stopped trying to figure out any logical rationality or consistency in time travel - there is none - and to attempt to find or craft any is the path to madness.
