  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a 2008 American action adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by David Koepp, based on a story by George Lucas and Jeff Nathanson. It is the fourth installment in the Indiana Jones film series and a sequel to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). Set in 1957, it pits Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) against Soviet KGB agents led by Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) searching for a telepathic crystal skull located in Peru. Jones is aided by his former lover, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), and their son, Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf). Ray Winstone, John Hurt, and Jim Broadbent are also part of the supporting cast.
Welp, here we are... the most divided of the Indiana Jones Saga (so far) but we had to have Coby watch it because we are going to have her watch Dial of Destiny when it comes out! Did she like this movie? Was it as bad as YOU remember? Do we just highlight the BEST parts, haha? We hope you watch with her as your catchup for the new movie next week!

Some didn't like the alien angle. But it was appropriate for the 50s. It was the atomic age. It was after the Roswell UFO scare in 1947. There was a Sci Fi movie boom in the 50s that took the place of the more supernatural films in the 30s and 40s. For me the subject fit the time.

Temple is probably my favourite too. I was a little too young when Raiders was released, so Temple was the first I saw. My dad taped it off the TV a few years after it came out and I watched it over and over and over. I would've been around 8-9 years old and the perfect age for the gross-out stuff with the bugs, the elaborate booby traps, the roller coaster mine cart sequence, etc.
I walked out of the theatre feeling disappointed after seeing Crystal Skull, but I enjoy seeing positive reactions to it, and I think reactions like yours help me appreciate it more.
I will say I walked out of Dial of Destiny with the feeling I had been hoping to get from Crystal Skull. Dial of Destiny gave me ALL the feels. So good!!!

There are some who didn't like this Indy film but I did. The era is 1957. Indy survives a nuclear explosion. Belief in Crystal Skulls and Aliens being tied together is NO DIFFERENT than a belief in the Jewish god, or Christianity, or Hindu Mysticism. All four movies deal with ancient (but powerful) artifacts and archeology. Being set in the 1950s, this one takes the 50's B-movies into account about aliens, the Russians and the cold war, etc. just like the first three, being in the 30s, had the 30's era serials and the Nazis in mind. I love all four films. Thank you for having an open mind and enjoying this movie!!! :o)

Yes, of the 20 or so channels now that I know of being willing to react to this one, only 3 disliked it outright; everyone else liked it for the most part (well, OK, another 3-5 were somewhat mixed on it; they all seemed to like the first half but not the last half as much). But I'd say it just goes to show the initial hate for this one was greatly exaggerated. Hell, even *I* as someone who _was_ well-versed in the series' lore prior to its release didn't think it was that bad. People need to remember that filmmaking and SFX are always going to keep evolving; it's never going to still be the same way it was 10-20+ years ago.

Some things fans disliked were: 1) the interdimensional beings moved the tone away from mystical (i.e. religious supernatural) and into sci-fi, 2) the sudden "happily ever after" marriage wasn't true to who Indy and Marion had been in Raiders (their relationship should have had more conflict and spark), and 3) with Harrison Ford aging out of action hero roles, Indiana's son would have been a great vehicle for having someone else take on the mantle, but no one could envision Shia LeBoef in that role.

  • @jonathang9705
    @jonathang9705 Год назад +4

A lot of people hate on this movie, but while I think it's the fourth best in the series, it has some great moments and ties things up nicely with Indy tying the knot with Marion, the only one of his three movie love interests who was really capable of keeping up with his adventurous lifestyle. The opening sequence is great, and is worthy of the other three movies. A little trivia, originally aliens were the ones behind the crystal skulls, and it was supposed to tie-in with the '50's sci-fi craze, but test audiences hated the idea. So Spielberg changed the aliens to "inter-dimensional beings", which seems kinda lame as it's really the same thing. I saw this movie in the theater, and a friend had already told me about the alien bit, and going in I kinda felt the same way. But I still really liked it...and still do!
I'm sorry the Indiana Jones ride is over for now (though I've still got a couple of reactions to go.) I wondered what a young Jennifer Connelly was doing reacting to Indiana Jones 😄, and though it wasn't her, my disappointment was tempered by Coby's great reacting skills. She really makes it seem like she's talking to you and you're right there watching it with her. Great job!

Apart from the continued evolutions in filmmaking and SFX in general, I feel as though the sudden integration of '50s culture and phenomena into a series that had only ever previously taken place in the '30s was perhaps the most jarring aspect about the movie for older viewers who grew up on the originals. The rather obscure MacGuffin likely didn't help, either. I mean, anyone who had a Judeo-Christian upbringing likely at least had some knowledge about both the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail - and the Sankara Stones were easy enough to relate to without knowing that much about Hindu culture - but how many people actually know about crystal skulls?

Didn't care for Shia's character but don't blame Shia because in a Spielburg movie you don't get to decide what you're going to do or say. They hand you a script in the morning & you follow the Directors orders. So he's the way he is, because that's what Spielburg wanted. But I would have written that character differently. Like Willie in 'Temple of Doom' I found/find him somewhat annoying. Which Is unnecessary.

I'm a quote unquote snooty fanboy for these films and have some nitpicks for this fourth entry. But, it's mostly superficial CGI stuff. The big sticking points with the majority of long time die hard fans like the nuke the fridge bit or that the McMuffin turns out not to be supernatural like the previous three, but full on deviates straight into hard Sci-fi outright and is aliens with a flying saucer to boot is not a problem with me. I think it's super genius actually. Again, I don't like the execution of the alien and it's on the nose looking directly into the camera mad mugging the audience as we are the femme fatal's POV shot and the CG was amateur hour even in '08. But, the idea behind it was inspired and George Lucas moving the world of Indiana Jones from the original context of old movie serials and adventurer cliffhangers into the 1950's twenty years down the line thus putting it firmly into that decades era of the B-movie aliens and monsters and fifty foot women attack Earth craze, the atomic age and regularity of potential nuckear attack school drills, the have and have-nots social economic divide between the W.A.S.P.'s and Greasers etc and incorporating all that into the Crystal Skull plot and backdrop was actually pretty brilliant and really creatively fruitful. All encapsulated in that one masterful visual shot of Indy walking up that hill looking at the nuclear mushroom cloud encroaching the once blinding light of day and symbolically showing our man from another era and time Dr.Jones now entering the atomic age. Sublime.
Marion's return, the reveal that Mutt is their son so Indiana's legacy has the very real potential to continue on through his very much like both his patents spunk and sass, but also their resiliency and resourcefulness. The story and structure are a foundation in which plot and themes sit on firm and stable ground. Only the execution betrays it reaching its full potential, but it's of no fault of the actors or the story themselves which are solid out right and hold their own. It's just shy of being its own masterpiece. But, just a Fan-Edit CGI effects course-correction and overhaul redo and I think it would be a film that not only would stand with the original trilogy of films at last uncontested , but a masterful work of art that would not only deserve and demand to be rewatched repeatedly generation passed to generation, but also it should be in a museum!

I’m hate to be the picky guy but you didn’t watch them in chronological order!😢 Raiders was first, then Temple, Last Crusade and Crystal Skull. I believe if you started with Raiders of the Lost Ark it would be your favorite! I really enjoyed your reactions! Thank you!

You're thinking of release date order. When reactors say "chronological order," they usually mean sorted based on the timing of the events in the movies (so prequels come first, for example). With that definition, her assertion is correct because Temple of Doom happens before Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Old Indiana is just a no-go. Indy was conceived as a two-fisted action character, not grandpa needing someone else to do all his stunts for him. And CS you get to see the difference between CGI-driven action versus real action sequences from stuff like Last Crusade.
I was in the Army in the early '90s and I was stationed in Panama. Jungles are not flat terrain that extend into the horizon. They have hills and valleys and are thick as heck.

Yep. If they had to keep making these, they could have tried the Bond approach. When someone turns too old for action, bring up a new guy to play the role. After all, it's basically Spielberg's variation of Bond anyway. Harrison Ford would have been like Sean Connery, remembered as the only true Bond, but it might have worked if they found the right man for the role

@shredd5705 I think part of the issue is that Indy's son was an obvious potential successor for the franchise, but no one could envision Shia LaBoeuf assuming that mantle -- just like how Indy snags his hat back at the end of the film before Mutt is able to try it on.
