I worked at ABC TV at the time and was able to get backstage for this performance.
I was standing stage left when Bruce Springsteen came and stood next to me on my right, and then Little Steven came and stood next to Bruce.
The 3 of us stood there watching the band rock out, I was blessed.
I love that😊
Jesus ye…good deal.. he’ll no.. effin’ great deal!
well, thank you. Fridays brought me Tom Petty, dire straits, king crimson,. I still playtime all, every week.
So perfect for a brief moment I thought they were lip synching. And then I went Oh wait a minute its Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Nevermind,
Good MEMORIES
The Best American Band EVVVVVVVEEEEERRRRRRR!!!!!!
This is so good its absurd
This just has to be one of the best live performances on a variety or talk show of all time. It's perfect . . every cue is so very on the mark.
Lucky enough to see him early in his career at the Academy of Music in NYC. Early stuff was amazing REST IN PEACE
Love the singular Petty facial expression as he delivers, "She's a complex kid."
That's because this song has meaning. Lyrics today don't mean shit.
@@ScoutPL Kind of like RUclips comments?
Tom's facial expressions were always cool.
@@ScoutPL Yup. Tom was a deep guy, doubt most know what the "shadow" actually is... (:)
The way he sings the word kid. ........ she’s a complex....keed ❤️❤️❤️
We had a fucking Legend on this planet. Tom Petty was the most unique and a phenomenonal human to rock and roll this planet. Missing you Mr.Petty
you should just post "Tom Petty" and everything is stated that need be stated.
My favorite Tom Petty song - and they nailed it. That band is so good, so tight.
Tom was so dedicated to his fans and his music. He showed the true measure of his values and the only musician I know of that told his label hell no I don't want to charge the fans a dollar more than standard for his album. I think that was the "DAMN THE TORPEDOES" album. When people like the eagles started charging a hundred dollars or more for concert tickets again he stood up and said HELL NO and his ticket price was set at fifty dollars maximum. To tell the truth I would not have wanted to be a promoter that tried to cross him on ticket prices. There is a saying us Southern boys use its "don't make me slap the damn taste outta your mouth"..That would've been word up to the promoter that tried him. Now that is a man of principles , don't you wish we had more artists like him. I'll not say who it was but I wanted to catch em live one more time. They were doing a show or two in Atlanta so I called wanting two tickets. The dude at the ticket place said ok that'll be eleven hundred dollars. I'll take your card numbers or you can get em on our website. Don't know how long the shock lasted. I thought back to Tom and the dollar savings and max fifty dollar ticket price. He is was more than Rock n Roll star , so much more.
Tom's playful eyes as he sings. Man, these guys just look like they're just having fun! 3 years. RIP Tom.
Benmont has never changed always the same looking badass on whatever instrument he’s playing what a talent he is
Wow! No bands like this anymore today. So tight and a great energy. Just a great time and memories.
Mike Campbell absolutely deserves more accolades & higher ratings than he’s ever gotten as a virtuoso guitar player and should absolutely be at the top of the “coolest Rock Gods” Club, but he’d probably hate that cause he’s the coolest!
Man, in the late 70's and early 80's, no one could touch TP and the Heartbreakers. This is so good, it made me cry. Every single guy is a musician I point to when asked about great musicians. There were not just great musicians but this was a great band. Howie was good RIP, but it was never quite the same without Ron Blair. Together these this group of guys were just magic.
The Heartbreakers went on to become the greatest American rock band of their time, and you can see the seeds of that in this performance. Benmont Tench is sublime, and the Blair/Lynch pairing was a highly under-rated rhythm section. Mike Campbell is a master of tone and song crafting.
One of the best Blair's bass lines for sure.
I loved this album, off to great musically, life time of great music😊❤
Fuckin bad dude....He left us with a shadow of beauty.......Amen.....I miss him....
There must be some software flaw that produced 10 thumbs down, because how could ANYONE give this performance a thumbs down. Great song. Great band. Great live performance.
The ten thumbs down were from people that either think auto tuned crap is music.
Or they were disappointed it didn't go 22 minutes longer.. 🙄
Best American band of all time. The tightest and had the most hits.
better than the E Street Band too.
Gotta be very close to it ... I loved Blondie too ... They're probably my favorite 2 American bands ... Wayne
better musicians
I don't mean to spit in your punch bowl, but The Eagles had a few hits with the 1st and 3rd best-selling albums of all time. Of course, the only signatures on my Les Paul are from Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. the best front man and the best guitarist ever. Campbell took great songs and made them perfect.
@@jeffhodge7333 Joe Walsh did fine without the Eagles.
Who ever directed the cameras and quick cuts took some notes at the rehearsal, son.
Absolutely. After I read your post, I went back and watched the clip again and the director was spot on. Which is really unusual because all too often in these live television performances they screw it up or throw up their hands and just focus on the singer.
Saw TPATH in 1977 at small clubs in L.A. I was a sophomore in HS. My friends thought I wa nuts for digging this band. But they thought I was nuts for diggin on Blondie, Ramones......So fuck em! I WAS RIGHT \m/
RIP TP. Thank you for the great shows.....
I love anything Tom Petty!
Just heard this on the radio the other day. One of the first cassettes I had in my car when I got my license. Damn what great times.
Those eyes!
There are really no words for this......
I love this video, it's so well filmed that you get to see each member of the band doing their thing. And it captures Tom Petty's young, skinny, fiery stage perfectly. This song really percolates, and the ending is just stellar; with Stan Lynch's surprise outro on the congas just when you think the song is over.
Just in case a guitar-playing Petty fan scrolls the comments years later for clues? One thing that makes this song great is Petty playing his guitar in open A tuning, which produces some otherwise unexplainably sonic chord tones.
That tuning was also used by Townshend and D Allman I believe.
What a concept - show up on a TV show and actually play instead of lip-syncing to the studio recording! Oh - and while we’re at it - let’s make the live version kick the studio version’s ass……!!!!!
For sure❣️🤩💔🎸🎹🥁💫
Man, what a tight band they were!
AND ARE!!! As of 2017......
They Rocked Sooooooooooo Good Together As Professional Musical Artists,,,
The synergy between Petty, Campbell and Tench was something else. RIP TP!
Love watching close ups of Tom's eyes when he's singing. 2:11
Bless you Tom. You were not just a face in the crowd, you will be recognized many years to come. Love you and your amazing voice and songwriting and leader of the amazing Heartbreakers!! R.I.P. friend.
I saw them at the Cal State Fair on Sept 6, 1981 on the Hard Promises tour! One of the best concerts I ever attended!
Saw them a month before in Maryland, absolutely Superb....
In the beginning of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers💘 greatness👏🏻 History in the making✨Tom knew we would need all of it, this kind of greatness comes around but once💫 💔
"She don't like working,She says she hater her boss" Love these words. Well Written! Legend R.I.P.. Tom Petty and the Heartbreker's are the best live show I have ever seen.
AHHH!! So f***kin" great, I just scored an original pressing of Damn the Torpedoes while on a trip to Canada
I am aware of Tom petty. I was in my 20s when this was happening. But I haven't heard this song since then. Why wasn't this just as a big of a hit, with the longevity, like the others?
Tom Petty = Jackson Browne on steroids. I bought Torpeados at age 10/11 in 1979, but just in the last couple of years I am realizing more and more what a unique "gem" TP was to R&R!
I lived under Stan Lynch’s apartment in ‘78 in Santa Monica. He wasn’t home much.
So totally awesome...best band ever❤
Wish San Lynch could have stayed in the band. He always gave 100 percent. Love to watch him play.
cmusic05 Agree. Ditto. Excellent drummer (and vocalist). Held his drumsticks traditionally like the late, great Buddy Rich.
Loved watching Stan play.
I read Tom's biography, "Petty: A Biography," which I would recommend to anyone even if they didn't like rock n roll. Tom really liked Steve Perrone's drumming and there are a lot of incidents with Tom and Mike getting into screaming arguments with Stan about his playing during recording sessions, but I never heard any problems with it. I think it was more personality, Stan admits he was the wild one of the group.
Stan Lynch ruled. best harmonies and the best groove of TPATH. TP playing the "Red Dog" tele
Hwy101CR And way underrated. He sang with Tom on the majority of songs on those early albums. Ya know...the ones that made them famous. ;)
Stan Lynch is amazing. I love Steve Ferrone too, but feel like Lynch didn't get the credit he deserved.
"He was so powerful I used to say he had this fifth gear that he could go into and just really make everything explode. He was really good at that, and he knew the songs really well. He and I had incredibly good communication onstage; he could read the movement of my shoulder. He could go anywhere I wanted to go. He never took his eyes off me. Anything I did was accented on the drums. Any movement I made. We had great eye communication where I could turn around and look at him, and he knew just exactly what I wanted to do." - Petty, 2005
@SouthVA 757 That's right! ...and I miss the 757 - great place to live!
My 1st concert, 11 days after this show. Damn The Torpedoes Tour at Pine Knob (Tommy Tutone opened), will always be my favorite Petty Album!
Killer song, they were so good live as well. Miss you Tom...
I still can't figure out why this is probably my most favorite Petty song. Maybe something about that sound bringing out memories of my college days while I was at WVU driving around in my 73' VW van. Those were the days! If you see this page Lorraine just know I've always missed you. Tom Petty was amazing! We'll always miss you Tom.
how i hope lorraine sees this
Ron Blair absolutely killing it on bass 🙌
Still miss Tom Petty. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers... all that great music. Thanks for sharing.
Great vid. I remember watching this on my old TV back in 1980 when it was on Friday night. I was so into it and the memory of it stuck with me all these years. Such a great live version. Great energy and so tight. Stan Lynch was such a great drummer and such a big part of the Heartbreakers. Was sad he left. They were all so young. Rest In Peace Tom Petty.
Right on brotha
I used to record most of the "Fridays" shows on VHS back then. Was a real thrill as Friday's was really a go-to source to see new and upcoming bands on TV.
Stan's smile at 3:23 is priceless. The whole band is on fire in this clip. Miss you, Tom!
Geoffrey Gentry yep, he freaking killed it!
Drummer drumming....yup, happy boy.
awesome. what a band. cant believe I'll never see them again.
so many great songs on Damn the torpedoes but this one was my favorite , more obscure , RIP Mr Petty , your music always made me happy and feel good . sad day R. I. P. :(
i was in hospital when he passed -- still seems a dream
jixxxxer17 This is my favorite track off that album.
I rarely say that I have a "favorite" in art but this one probably takes the cake for me of any music I've ever heard. 100% pure and guided by the best band to every walk the land. All the smiles and subtle drum fills with the lyrics ;). The peak of civilization.
That album was so damn good it’s hard to pick a favorite but yeah this could be it.
God dam was that good...so tight!
They are the greatest band and so great in concert. I will miss TP until I am gone. Great songwriter, great singer, great everything and so totally adorable. Sorry, I can't help myelf, he was just so beautigul.
Every member of this band is like a puzzle piece. Everyone contributes so much. I could never pick my favorite heartbreaker
I. Can't even believe that song!!!
A real band. Saw that tour. Mind blowing! Thanks for posting.
Tom is great. Love his music. 🎩✨💕 Love his performance. Love his voice.

I adore this song and I adore this performance. MEOW! Great rock-n- rolll
I love Tom Petty and the heart breakers band. He will always be here with us and his music and memories will live forever. Merry Christmas in heaven Tom Petty. RIP.
Just rippin', great stuff !
I love this band so much. I watch their music videos all the time. I bought 2 books about Tom Petty & read them while I was in the hospital. I had hoped to see him in concert someday. We did go to the first Firefly show here a few years ago to see him. It was so crowd
ed we couldn't even get close enough to the stage.
Thomas Earl Petty........THE MAN........!!!!!
Why I Still Hang Around
Legends!
Of course I love you Tom 💖 No doubt about it!
So iconic
Stan Lynch sang great harmonies.
Happy Birthday today(May 21) to Stan Lynch. Cheers!

Great song! RIP Tom Petty!
I'm happy and sad at the same time.
4:35 What a cute goofball!
The boys were real youngins’ here....
Outstanding!!!!!!,,,,,Bravo!!!!
Young, hot & talented. All of them! What more could one want from a rock n roll band????
One of my favourite memories of the man - sassy and sooo cool. RIP, Tom.
Bravissimo brivido sei importante sempre nel successo
The best, Jerry.
The best.
I love them all. So humble, so talented. Loved to see Benmont and Stan sing in the background. I had a crush on Ron.
Love this song
Rock on!
Great voice! Great Band !
Man wish we could get out hands on the isolated channels for this. This may be their best single live song.
GreenRiver 72 This is indeed a great life single but check out there 1983 Saturday Night Live performance of the waiting! I'm partial to this great song anyway, but that is one tight, perfect, amazing performance! Go check it out!! There are other great singles after as! This performance of Shadow of a Doubt/(She's a complex kid) is awesome as well! Love all their songs for that matter! Some are more my favorites, but love them all!!
The Waiting on "Pack Up The Plantation" might be arguably better than the '83 SNL one :)
Check out Tom and bo diddle singing mona, amazing!
saw TP and the Hear Breakers in Ottawa tonight...great...but miss Stan and Howie!!
ridiculously tight
Awesome stuff - Tom changed the lyrics around some on this version, must've had some censor tell him not to say "proud" which is why he's rolling his eye's like that. They were at their best with Stanley in the band. Great band great version of another great Petty song.
with stan and ron!
❤❤❤❤Awesome❤🎉🎉
The 70's!!!!
This is better than the studio version
