  • I finally got to try the Quest 3 through the Best Buy demo. In this UNSPONSORED review, I show Quest 3 through the lens views and discuss my first impressions, both good and bad:
    - How is the mixed reality? Does it really look like a hologram?
    - Is it really so different from Quest 2? Is it worth the upgrade?
    - How are the Quest 3 black levels?

    I think if weve learned anything from meta over the life of the quest 2 its that they will do their VERY BEST to release continuous and major software improvements. I have no doubt that the MR experience on quest 3 will keep improving with updates and that they will fix that warping youre talking about.

    Hi, Mic - thanks for the review. As someone who shoots 360, do you think it will be easy to upload h.264 or h.265 videos? We have a small aviation museum, and can upload 4K and 5.6K videos to our old Oculus Go headsets, but are looking to improve. We're hoping the new soon-to-be-released 8K Qoocam and this headset will do the trick for us (flying videos on antique airplanes). Thanks!

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  9 месяцев назад +2

      Oooh nice! Yes quest 3 should be really good for that because of the better display and improved ergonomics. To upload the files, just connect via usb c to your PC. Then on the headset you will see a message asking if it’s ok to allow file transfers. Then the quest 3 will be like an external drive. After you copy the files, you can use apps such as DeoVR to watch them.

I owned my Quest 2 about a year and surprisingly didn’t play many games other than RE4 and Beat Saber (despite downloading many to try) . What I really enjoy is the interactive apps like The Climb & Thrill of Fight. Also I was surprised how much You Tube VR and BigScreen I used. As well as the Wander app . I didn't expect it to look like real life. If I want to see my surroundings, as if they're 100% real, I'll take the headset off. I like the idea of it including your space, not that it has to be like I wasn't wearing the headset. The warping around the hands is going to annoy me though. Hopefully they find some kind of update or adjustment to improve that. Good review and information though.

    • @360vroomers
      @360vroomers  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Richard. The warping might not be so distracting as it sounds. It only happens to very near objects, like within 3 feet. So if you saw my foot in the video, there was no warping. This warping is also in other headsets such as quest pro or even varjo I think. I’m supposing even vision pro has it. It’s because of the large distance between the 3d cameras being used for the pass through.

    Thanks for the video, in my opinion I find AR or mixed reality on quest 2 to be actually amazing despite the horrible black n white warped video! I wish there where more apps that supported it. Obviously pass through is a video camera and could never emulate what we see in the real world with our actual eyes. I’m sure I will be floored by Quest 3 because I use my pass through a lot on Quest 2, what impresses me is not so much the pass through cameras visuals but the objects that come into our play space that’s the main concept and attention of AR, that being the case one forgets about the quality of the cameras because the main focus is the mixed reality and not the video camera (even bad black n white grainy video) so for me color pass through on Quest 3 plus AR will be very impressive and worth the update!

      @360vroomers  9 месяцев назад +1

      I didn’t notice any difference in brightness although I had no access to the brighntness controls so I couldn’t test that. As for psvr2, psvr2 black levels are noticeably deeper but has god rays and a small sweet spot. It also looks like it is shimmering which might be the pixels. So for optics, q3 is better.
      As for the graphical quality, psvr2 graphics are better. It’s like the average quest game looks like a ps2 game while psvr2 looks like a low end ps3 game imho.
      But a game like Asgard’s wrath 2 looks similar to a psvr2 game.
      When I get quest 3 I will do a more detailed comparison.

      Quest 3 has better lenses (much clearer) and much higher resolution but actually PSVR has better *graphics,* with more details and textures. The exception is something like Asgard's Wrath, which looks like a good PSVR game. If graphics are your priority, then quest 3 by itself is not better than PSVR . But: 1. Quest 3 can be used as a wireless desktop VR headset. If you have a VR-ready PC, then it will look better than PSVR (because of the higher resolution). 2. Quest 3 is more convenient. No wires. Just turn it on. It feels more immersive. And yes you can use it for desktop VR wirelessly too as long as you have a 5GB router. 3. Quest 3 has mixed reality games and apps. Adds a new dimension to your VR games. Here are some of them: ruclips.net/video/u-JnSZGyfxc/видео.html

    Hey 360 Vroomers,
    VR has been on my radar since the Oculus Development Kit (or whatever it was called). Have only sporadically followed VR since then but since the Apple Vision Pro has been announced it has really peaked my interest, especially for watching movies and productivity. I also think that the XBox Cloud Gaming service that I already use currently, is really interesting. Also with Office coming to the Quest it might be something to look forward to.
    I would love to get the Vision Pro however in Europe it won't be before 2025 and will probably cost up to $5000 here, which is much more than my max budget of approximately $2.5k. Even though I'm tech savvy I for some reason have never used a VR/MR headset, even though being aware of them since 2013. Hopefully the Quest 3 will provide somewhat of the experience of the Vision Pro for a fraction of the price with availability not in 2 years, but next week.
    I am really debating on whether to pre-order it now and picking it up next week, try some games and watching some movies. The only thing holding me back currently is the pixel density, which some people claim is still too low for productivity and entertainment, and the Office module and XBox Cloud Gaming being only available in December. This would mean that if I don't like those services I can't return the headset anymore.
    Do you think that in the current state of the Quest 3, it's worth to buy it for my intended usage scenario?
    Thank you!

      @procrusteus 9 месяцев назад +2

      In that context, it is spelled piqued, and never "peaked"........ Signed, the grammar Nazi.
      I can relate to what you said about being tech savvy yet not being a VR user. I believe that recent news about the Apple Vision Pro has stimulated a lot of interest from people that had looked at VR in the past and then decided that the technology was not advanced enough to provide an experience that would hold their interest for long. Things have changed and I believe that now is a perfect time to jump in. I pre-ordered the Quest 3 as my first VR headset because it is a lot cheaper than the Apple unit while still being adequate as an introduction to the genre. It seems senseless to give Apple a large sum of money for a unit that will quickly become obsolete as the pace of VR development speeds up. I look at any VR unit as being a disposable item and so does the average consumer and I also don't want to commit myself to Apple's unproven VR ecosystem and be their guinea pig as it would make me feel foolish.

      Hello there! Great question! For productivity, I think quest 3 may have enough resolution. I was able to read fine text easily. I will test it with their desktop link when I get it to confirm.
      The bigger issue is how long you can wear the headset comfortably. On this demo, I had to hold the headset to my face so I couldn’t tell how it feels with the weight etc.
      in the past, I have tried writing articles on my quest 2 and it was possible but nowhere as convenient or comfortable as a regular monitor. Has quest 3 improved to the point that I can wear it all day? I don’t know yet but I’m guessing probably not.
      Having said that I don’t know if vision pro is comfortable enough to wear a whole day either.
      I hope to be able to test it if I can get the budget for it.
      Now let’s talk about watching movies. I’ve watched an entire movie on quest 2. It’s not bad and I like how you can be lying on your bed looking up at a virtual movie screen on your ceiling.
      Caveats: again, comfort. I don’t know if you can stand wearing a headset for 2 hrs or more. Not everyone can. So I strongly recommend buying through a store with a good return policy.
      Second issue is isolation. When you watch a movie in a VR headset you might feel isolated from other people with you. The color pass through mode should help but this is still something to consider.
      In that regard, vision pro has the cool feature of showing your eyes to other people which should help but I don’t know how well it works in real life. It might still feel isolating.

      Regarding the issue of comfort, I might have to grab the Elite strap in the case it won't be comfortable when wearing for longer periods, and I also typically take breaks after 2 hours of screen-time regardless of the device.
      And regarding your issue of isolation (which I think is a good one, as someone who never tried a VR headset, I never would've thought of that!), I myself am a student that spends a lot of time in my room studying alone sitting behind my monitor I don't think that will matter bother me a lot, on the contrary, it might even be better for concentrating ;)
      I mean, the sole purpose of me being interested in a VR headset is the enhancement of productivity by being more immersed (like sitting in a 4k natural environment, like a serene forest, with a huge floating screen to "escape" from the white office.) And of course, watching movies in a virtual cinema instead of my little laptop display.

    Advertising for products has lied to consumers for decades and there needs more enforcement with tighter rules. But Meta needs to put the OLED back in the Quest, LCD displays just can't make darker scenes dark enough. But, Facebook (Meta) ruined the Quest, Oculus knew what they were doing with it and if they hadn't sold out to Facebook the Quest would still have an OLED display. And what's with the Quest 3 only coming with 128GB or 512GB? It's a big price difference between the two and we all know that 128GB just isn't enough memory for the size of apps that are being developed. Having a 256GB option would have been perfect.

If the cheaper one is 256GB, i think people would just buy that and there wouldn't be able to sell the 512GB. But if the cheaper one is 128GB and the higher end one is 256GB, the 256GB might not be big enough for enthusiasts. And in addition, the difference from 128GB would not have justified a big price increase. So i think that's why they offered 128GB and 512GB. I see the 512GB as an upgraded 256GB. :)

But on my Quest 2 they are almost unplayable for me because you can't see a lot of things as it's too smokey and grey. And yes, the LCD reduced the pixel size and made bright games really clear but after watching things with OLED it's difficult to like an LCD display. I have two OLED TV's and the true blacks make a huge difference in picture quality. With my Quest 2 in the Bigscreen app it's really hard to watch a movie because the theater environments are just not dark enough, it's very distracting. But if someone has never had the original Quest then the not so dark scenes won't bother them as much. And how much more would using an OLED display in the Quest cost consumers...$5 extra...maybe $10? I'd pay it! The pancake lenses cost more and Meta had no problem adding them and it increased the Quest price point up another $200. Is it the best VR so far? Sure. Is it actually good? No and especially not for $500. VR is still not mature technology, so much more room to improve. Think it's a mistake they used any resources for MR when they could've improved VR some more

      Hey there Danny. $500 is a lot, but you know, i was looking at the original Oculus Quest. It was $499 for 128GB. This one is the same price but has a waaaay higher resolution, a lot faster processor, color passthrough, depth sensor, waaaaay better lenses, etc. so I think it's an OK price. Not as good a deal as when Quest 2 launched at 299, but i think it's a better deal than let's say psvr2 at 499.
      As for MR vs improving VR, i think it's a good question. I don't know... In the past couple of years, there's been more buzz around AR and i think MR is more exciting than AR. The AR glasses I've tried (hololens etc.) were all kind of underwhelming. Is that more important than improving VR, let's say with an even more powerful processor? I don't know but for their investors and stockholders, i think it was a good move. But again, you made a good point.

      @@360vroomers Its not that $500 is a lot, $500 is too much for this. The resolution is marginal, they spent that money on Mr and even other reviewers said there's no real Mr features. So they wasted money. I read a lot of ppl would want more storage, give them that instead. I want more resolution, maybe oled; I'll take that instead of those cameras in the front and probably a lot of R&d to get it right. It's weird to compare current technology to quest 1 technology. I would hope resolution is better after several years. There's sooo much room for it to improve. I just hoped the VR was better, by a lot.

      @@dannym5468 hey there Danny. I’ve actually bought the quest 3 and although I was initially skeptical of mixed reality, I found it fun. I also let my kids try it and my son said it felt more “real” than VR. Personally, I think it’s definitely worth the price.

      Really? It’s really not a bother. It’s not distortion. They look like little cushions intruding into a lens.

      I can understand. That's a big difference from current gen consoles. But this is after all a mobile chipset. And it has to render fully spherical and stereoscopic 3D 360, which is much harder than rendering just a regular screen. But if you want VR with better graphics, I recommend a desktop VR system, which will have better graphics in games such as Half Life Alyx. Quest 3 can actually work as a wireless desktop VR headset as long as you have a VR-ready PC. PSVR2 is also another desktop VR option. I will do a quest 3 vs psvr 2 comparison.
