This has been my favorite park my whole life. I've been to Disney and Universal, to bush gardens and six flags- but nothing will beat coming back to my home state of Maine and going to funtown splashtown usa. My memere would get my cousin and I season passes EVERY YEAR and take us multiple times a week sometimes. I worked in splashtown in 2019 even. This park holds so many memories for me- from field trips in middle school to bringing the children of my friends and family there now, it's a place that is near and dear to a lot of us Mainer's hearts.
Excalibur is an underrated, hidden gem. Funtown has been my home park for the last nine years. It did need that retrack towards the end though. Also, Southern Maine is generally beautiful and about 20 degrees cooler on average in June. You visited during one of the worst early heatwaves in years. It's been a hot summer up here.
Some fun facts about the Astrosphere: it used to be a huge bubble that was inflated with air. You can see why that was sometimes an issue and they eventually worked to build the structure that's there now. The Astrosphere is thought to be hunted. While working there the music will turn on by itself. After opening all the safety doors on the ride to get them ready for the next set of riders, sometimes operators would come back to find them all shut again. (There is a hallway where they give an entry speech in and you cannot see into the main ride area when both operators are in there. One to count the people and to handle line management and the other gives the speech. ) The photos that are shown on the bubble are chosen each year and you can always find a different thing to look at when riding year to year. The song is a remix of Fire on High by ELO and the strict recording rules in this ride are due to Funtown owning the copyright on this remixed version. Edit: I know most of these because I worked at Splashtown and sometimes would be asked to help with this ride.
I've been riding the Astrosphere since I was four. It was a much different experience in those days. This was before the fire that destroyed part of the air dome, tunnel, and different effects. There weren't as many lights and the main features were the slides and the white strobe lights which were way more intense and were used during the part that sounded like an earthquake. Every ride cycle ended with a giant picture of the mummy shown with all the lights off before the black lights came back on.
Yeah that doesn't surprise me. I was too young to remember the haunted house but my parents did mention the reason it was closed orginally was because a older man died of a heart attack from ride and it was originally really close to the Astrosphere. And what adds even more credit in my eyes as when I was waiting in line for the Tornado in Splashtown I say two tombstones hidden right at the edge of the park near the road, fenced in their own little spot.
Great video! I didnt used to think Maine had all those roller coasters and amusement park rides. Excalibur looked fun! The log flume looked nice! Im looking forward to the next Vlog!
I vividly remember riding the Excalibur the day it opened. it's for sure gotten bumpier over the years, hahah but still so much fun! the Astrosphere also has a special place in my heart
Maine has been a bucket list state for me for years for the beaches! Hope to get there one day🤞🏻 A purple wild mouse is the best kind of wild mouse🐭💜🫰🏻Palace Playland looks to have some fun and ridiculous rides
Funtown looks so nice, well maintained and a lot of green there. The indoor scrambler is really a hidden gem, I would not have expected a full light show like that.
It so is! I live in maine and once me and my friend went on the same one 14 times in a row!! There was also like no line (i also think we were only 8!)
It thrashes you around but I haven't been since about 2019, I hear a lot of parts of the track have been rebuilt/replaced. We used to go there multiple times a summer growing up, my kids are almost old enough to start riding things I can't wait!
As a Maine local, they did used to play Medieval music on the bridge/main walk area of Excalibur but they just stopped doing that one year with no word as to why lol. I miss it though it was great for the immersion.
I actually lived in Portland, ME for a year back in the late 90's -- not too far from Saco. I had no idea that Funtown USA existed when I was living up there - only found out a few years later when I moved back to NC. I did go to Old Orchard Beach once though -- on a rainy, dreary fall day, so I saw the park there, but of course it wasn't open given the time of year. Maine is by far one of the most beautiful states in the US. The coast throughout the Portland area is so incredibly beautiful. I spent a lot of time exploring it. There were definitely those times when I felt like I was in the setting of a Stephen King novel.
Hey man, I'm glad you enjoyed the park! We appreciate you coming and sharing us with more people who might not know we exist. We also love the critiques as it helps us improve the park, so thank you again!
I just love the scrambler a lot! I been to carnivals where they have those rides and I really enjoy them! The scrambler is like the best flat ride at these small parks and carnivals!❤❤❤
