I don't know what people are criticizing, but that's not how opinions work. A lot of you criticize politicians and presidents. Have any of you ever been a politician or a president? Well, according to your own backwards logic, you're not allowed to have an opinion about them since you haven't been in their shoes. Pretty fuckin' stupid, huh? 🤷♂️
Knowing how modes and the notes work and HOW they derive from the Major scale helps tremendously in knowing how to compose/use a melody and in what kind of color you want to apply to it. To not understand modes and how they work is to deny color to a melody, which does not make for a good melody. Of course this can be overidden by your ear (assuming you have a good ear).
I have from GW the How To Play Like Randy Rhoads dvd with Andy Aledort. In my opinion it's one of the very best how to play lead metal guitar lessons. Combine it with the Tribute album tab book and you got the info to become a helluva metal guitar player.
See,people always ask me "how was Randy Rhoads as a guitar teacher" or what did he teach you, which is stupid ,GUITAR,! But,beginning students went through this with him. I had been taking lessons already from a jazz guitar teacher,so Randy would teach me things I wanted to learn ,unless he thought that I was missing out a part of music theory that I would need to know. This is basically how he taught ,but you should bring a tape player and a notebook ,he would write the tabs on the notebook pages . So ,keep it up,and keep Randy's name out there! Also ,that is a cool strap,is it custom,it looks like nice custom piece. And where can I get one? Keep shredding Metal Mike!
A serious study of very old church music which spawned classical music as well, used the modes heavily. The modes are named after the various greek tribes which supposedly each used 1 exclusively as their own for music. But they weren't codified into a system until they were used in the midieval church music. Then they merged with western music and became what we today call modes. But there's tons of scales around the world especially when you start the microtonal scale studies. That's a lot too
Makes a lot more sense to me (the way you describe it) as to which mode is which based on which note is the root note and the corresponding intervals. Thanks Metal Mike 8-|
This doesn't really show how to apply modes in a musical context. Record a B min chord to C maj, then try soloing using this "Phrygian" mode this dude is talking about. Then you can hear the "flavor" of the Phrygian mode. Or try C maj to D maj and start soloing starting from the C note using the steps from G maj to get a "Lydian" flavor (my personal favourite). To get an even stronger flavor, compare the C lydian scale to C maj, and the only difference is an F#, so play that note in both chords.
What is a co- mode Mike, two modes or notes that are sequenced together in such a way to form two binary codes that follow a specific note or numbered pattern in which one can sumize to be grouped musically correct? Right ?
I just need to ask this The three notes per string has 7 patterns do I just need the learn the 7 patterns of the three notes per string or should I learn 5 different patterns for each modes for example 5 patterns for Ionian,5 for Dorian etc.Its very confusing.
+Imtiaz Sk I m afraid u will have to learn most of them. Their usability is related to where you are on the fretboard at any time. Given time (+ practice) u should see that come to life.
I would learn the major scale, because the remaining modes are all derived from it. And I found that understanding some basics about chord construction really helped to give the notes of a scale meaning. Assuming you intend on improvising. My very limited understanding is that each of the modes kinda relate to chord types. An example being that mixolydian compliments dominant 7th chords nicely, because they both have a major 3rd, and the flat 7 in them. I will say for myself that achieving those exotic modal sounds is challenging. My stuff usually just sounds major, or minor. Any theory guys/girls that care to add anything?
The easiest way I remembered the modes was this. ( O = note/ - = empty fret ) All the 7 modes follow this pattern up the neck with 3 notes per string. 3 major 3rds = O-O-O, followed by 2 Minor thirds= OO-O and ending with 2 more like this= O-OO. After that it goes back to the start. Each mode starts at a different part of the cycle. Example? Major scale starts on the second Major third O-O-O and then goes through the pattern. The Mode is simply what note you start and end on.
thing is, Mike recorded all his lessons in (roughly) one go and left to do other things. Paul is a permanent employee of GW and gets to do the reviews. Mike doesn't work for GW, mind.
GW...not trying to be a dick to Paul or anything but he's not a metal player, THIS GUY is. Would it be possible to get him to do some more metal guitar reviews? Or perhaps have this guy, Paul, and Jimmy demo the equipment. Jimmy does the clean stuff, Paul does the "rock" stuff, and Mike does the metal stuff? You guys' reviews have the highest production quality but suffer from the lack of variety in people demoing them.
Awesome, you can find me on facebook to chat more. I'm not gonna charge you anything either :) I'd look you up but I don't know what you look like haha
This video doesn't actually explain anything about modes. Modes are not just a major scale starting on a different degree. There's obviously much more to it. The notes won't sound modal if there's no background to them and this video doesn't say anything about that. This video is useless.
How this applies to Randy Rhoads is a total mystery. I know all 7 modes of the major scale well and I can tell you Mike's explanation is totally confusing. If you want to learn what modes are move on and never come back to this.
all these people that criticize---where is your free you tube channel? Keep em coming Metal Mike your a great teacher
You know what isn't great? Your English.
+NarkDights | Hexthrill And this must be critic number 1. Ur ridiculous.

Never seen anyone explain something so simple, in such a complicated way. Awesome!

You don't get much more metal than Metal Mike\m/
This guy rawks man great teacher and player .
this is the stuff im learning in my college guitar lessons. glad to know it is actually used not just taught for the purpose of teaching it
I have from GW the How To Play Like Randy Rhoads dvd with Andy Aledort. In my opinion it's one of the very best how to play lead metal guitar lessons. Combine it with the Tribute album tab book and you got the info to become a helluva metal guitar player.
Seen a few things on modes but not done anything with them. This is a great explinaion of how they fit together!
See,people always ask me "how was Randy Rhoads as a guitar teacher" or what did he teach you, which is stupid ,GUITAR,! But,beginning students went through this with him. R/thathappened
?
he never taught
Damn , you took lessons from Randy , you’re like royalty !! Seriously though , that is so awesome !!
@@garygarner6964 He began teaching at 16. Look up Janet Robin. George Lynch took over teaching Randy's students when Randy got the Ozzy gig.
Metal Mike is a great player and teacher
I'm so glad I'm not alone! Metal Mike is badass! \m/
This was a decent explanation of modes, but this had damn near nothing to do with Randy Rhoads.

cool strap, and cool lesson too!!
That punch in the intro scared the crap out of me

Randy Rhodes' Modes!
i think by making 1 string scales it makes it a lot easier to understand
i agree, mike needs to do the metal gear reviews

Nice. Makes a change from my boring AeLocIDPLydMix. I start with Aeolian because i reference everything from my minor patterns.
Great lesson! Keep them coming
Good lesson. Clarified a couple of things for me. Cheers
The solfege doe is also Do. It's Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do
Damn I wanted more , that was awesome !!
Metal Mike definitely rules. But i cant stop wondering, where is Martin Goulding?
in the midnight hour she cried mode mode mode....mode mode mode \m/
excellent lesson
Modes-Easy to teach, hard to apply. It's not enough to explain the scale there needs to be some explanation of chordal context eg. when to play them.
Very informative lesson! Thank you, well explained.
Very informative, thanks
Dorian is exactly the same as Ionian.
You just change the note the bass player is playing and resolve your twiddles on that root note etc...
Please name the song the start of the video :D
thing is, Mike recorded all his lessons in (roughly) one go and left to do other things. Paul is a permanent employee of GW and gets to do the reviews. Mike doesn't work for GW, mind.
you are brilliant
His tuner locking mechanisms on the nut are sideways
"WULCOM,...DIS IS CULLED DAH RANDY MODES..."
I agree!!

I wish I knew what he was talking about and how to utilize this knowledge to make music :/
+Ariel Gomez Still wondering? I can help! I recently went through what you are asking about.
+Lucas Weiman Guitar yes I suppose so. I think I got it now but would still like to know more
Awesome, you can find me on facebook to chat more. I'm not gonna charge you anything either :) I'd look you up but I don't know what you look like haha
it's basic music theory, it's easier to understand visually on a piano
i did until you brought me back here
Paul is a pretty good guitarist, it saves them money to get one guy to demo gear
sweet strap
Майку как у Майка?
my way was "I Don't Pee Like My Aunt Lucy"
But not how to spell "Deer".
Doe a dear, a female dear!
Julie Andrews taught me all about music! Haha!
I thought the ancient greeks invented them.
Confusing
Thanks, spelling and peoples names were never my forte!
However, composing music is!
People who get both are lucky!
Ahahahahah yeah but we should explain him that we are in 2013 and people fall asleep watching this guy( plus man get a tone please)
Modes come from church music originally.

This guy just come out a black mass or what?
Just because of the way he dresses huh? nice logic
Gears of war lml
Its pointless if youre just getting into musical theory.
I dont get it now, maybe one day :D
Gayest strap I've ever seen, dude. Wow. Totally metal! Love it!
Love the video, but the guitar tone is absolutely awful....
randy rhoads ? i dont see anything you said related to randy rhoads... you talk too much nonsense.. wasting my time...
waste of my time .
Don't let music ruin your life! The pied piper is alive and well in 2017.
bla bla bla & bla bla bla.......
I had no idea he played for Halford :)
And for Sebastian Bach's Angel Down which is a damn great album too.
