    Woah!
When I think of the most classic sound for a trumpet I hear a brilliant, full, rich, and robust tone. The names Gozzo, Severinsen, Bernie Glow, Clark Terry, Harry Glantz, Snooky Young, etc come to mind!
A lot of the classic trumpet recordings of the 40's and 50's featured vintage French Besson trumpets. It makes sense. The Besson trumpet was copied by so many (Bach most notably). The spin and carry of a great Besson is unparalleled.
This Trumpet recently came into the shop on consignment and it's a player. It's so fun! While we can't date it exactly (Besson is notoriously challenging to date the birth of these horns) our best guess is sometime around the second world war.
I'm using my custom reserve mouthpiece on this clip for the most part (besides the beginning which is on my Ta-1).

In the Summer of 1977 I got to play a 1940 vintage French Besson. Awesome doesn’t begin to describe the response of a French Besson. I have played on a Monette at ITG but still that French Besson had no equal.

The highlight of the video was that clip from 'Trumpeter's Prayer', perfect trumpet sound.

I have a 1950 French Besson Brevette Flugelhorn (as played by Art Farmer). It looks like an antique but plays absolutely wonderfully! The only flugel I’ve ever played that’s in tune in the low register - just fabulous.

I recently had one of the post war models. It was a solid horn.

I have an English Besson Brevette from 1947 wrapped like a cornet that I love. I know the French ones are better, but I still love mine.

If the serial is under 95xxx it is definitely a late 1930s prewar. The late 30s Brevete and Meha were a bit more standardized than previous prewar types. Yes, the large bore Meha made between 92xxx-94xxx is prewar. These Mehas will have the "F. Besson" name on the bell, this is because some US importers were able to use the Besson name, some importers weren't.
As Josh Laundress has said on trumpet herald, the previous serial number lists for Besson is incorrect and has hard evidence already proving the old list wrong.
