I feel like creating brushes on your own keeps the illustration more consistent because the brushes will always have your own style attached to it. Especially if it's assets like trees, stones, maybe some textures.
Windows: 4:26 = Ctrl + Shift 4:41 = Alt if Alt doesnt work, make sure you click the arrow next to the colored square in the brush settings on top an uncheck "Load solid colors only" then clean the brush and try sampling again, it should work.
4:30 I am sure you know this, but for people learning: It switches back to a normal brush because you saved a brush preset tool (tiny icon on top right for brush) . Could leave it blank when creating it or just make mixer brush and regular brush separate. You can do it eaither way though. I did not know about the Ctr Alt option when selecting! So awesome. Thank for the tutorial!
You can do this in Krita by creating a brush tip, unchecking create mask from color, and in the new brush's settings, set the brush mode to gradient map. You can then change the colors of the gradient through the gradient settings on the top bar in the main window.
I was wondering if any of the programs I have could do this. I figured if there was one it'd be krita lol. I don't think any of the others I use can do much with gradient mapping (paintstorm, artrage, Corel 2020. Sketchbook pro miiight?). If anyone knows how to do this sort of stuff in a non Photoshop, non krita (I just don't like how the painterly brushes look in krita a ton) pls lemme know 😅. Clip studio might be able to?
I don't usually leave comments, or talk much in the discord, but I just wanted to say how incredibly helpful your RUclips has been to me. Thanks for all the awesome content, Trent.
I haven't taken this new course yet, so if it really is your best one yet, then your Advanced Character Skin Design Concept Art Workshop is a close second. I've watched that almost half a dozen times now and done the homework twice through with great results. I'll probably just make it a habit to do every six months or so.
you really do amazing stuff and tutorials. I am one of those who want to run a marathon before being able to crawl. I force myself to reign in those impulses and go over the beginner stuff until I have it down pat.
So good. I really hope I can get this workshop soon. The lessons on the asset sheet alone look like they would save years of my life. Happy Thanksgiving, Trent.
I can't believe that the thought of instancing a few preset bushes, grasses and trees to use in 2d art had never even occured to me before. And I'm a gamedev that routinely uses asset packs in levels. >_
Thanks for these videos man. I'm not a pro or even aspiring pro but I appreciate the work and its a hobby I love. Will be buying these classes to learn more
Its nice download brushes. But wen you learn how to make your own brushes and think how to apply they to your needs, are great. You be abble to take picture of all kind of things and textures and turn they to your brushes 💪😌
Sure wish updated Krita worked like that. Instead, it's this barely viewable "brush preview" thing at the top of the settings. It's so thin/tiny you can't really tell what it's doing unless you've got your eyeballs about 6" from the screen. Also, how do you do those gradient brush options on a Windows PC or in Linux?
those are two completely different jobs. But if you want to learn about environment concept art, check out my courses such as my Facility design workshop at www.gumroad.com/trentk
Am I literally the only idiot who can’t get the stupid brush to convert to a mixer brush? I hold down window+alt then select the grass brush and the damn thing keeps turning into a normal brush.

I didn't know about Ctrl + Alt trick either. I've been saving tools twice because of that brush preset being on
Ctrl alt, so that's what it is for us non-apple people, thanks!
