Is Slab City Really Lawless? A Day Exploring the Last "Lawless Places" in the USA

- Slab City and Bombay Beach are certainly places that spark the interest for anybody interested in a Nomadic lifestyle and I suppose that's how I found myself wound up in these towns.
To me, Slab city was a weird combination of people scared of society and the government, people in love with Art, those who have no where else to go, and those who seem to have given up and found themselves in Slab City scraping by. I personally could and would live in a place LIKE this but I would never live in THIS place specifically.... it's too sad.
At the end of the day, I have to condemn Slab City and say overall its not a lawless land that it claims but rather more like BLM land that people started living on and the government looked the other way.
Bombay beach on the other hand seemed almost more "lawless" than Slab City did. It's further from any sort of town or city and for the most part, government amenities. Mostly just the basics like electric, water and sewage....maybe? It was hard to tell.
Bombay Beach overall was very enjoyable to visit with frickin weird artwork and even weirder people but in the end, it's a place reserved for those who live that lifestyle and I have respect for it.
Overall a really great day of seeing some very different cultures and ways of life that help to open my eyes. That's what I'm out here for in a sense!

wholesome Utah boy meets extreme counter culture.
Yes 😂
Solar ovens, solar dish cookers, hyperadobe earth ships, subterranean structures for coolness, underground cisters, rain catchment systems. That is what these people need and what they should be doing and perfecting
That’s what I’m saying man, instead they make nothing but art out of trash
Underground "earth air tubes" for free air-conditioning, poor mans fiberglass and xps foam, solar water distillers. Solar mirror arrays for electricity production through steam, or for cooking.
Smart man.
I liked your video but don't think it was kind of fair if you to the the salvation mountain dude under the bus when all he was doing was warning you.. the art thing is the burning man group broke up and started one in Bombay Beach every year big the locals will only allow 500 guest..art we work is cool
Sultan Beach is toxic
The beach is being prepared for the big bash on last day..gotta take some party favours to understand
The fire on the beach was like the poor man’s Bohemian Grove…😅
I think the title for the slabs would be better described as The Last Unregulated Lands in America but I think the locals really like the Lawless description. Question is do they encourage that moniker as a way to dissuade others from infiltrating their "paradise," only they know. Appreciate the drone footage, it really gave perspective to area actually being a town, I now understand why it was such a big draw in its its time
They use the “Lawless” title to ENCOURAGE people to come there the as the salvation mountain man said. A few people profit from tourists here and apparently that draws everybody in
Yeah, Slab City creep me out too! I didn't sleep over night! Very Cool! 😎 Too bad the Banana Museum closed down north of the lake. Awesome Video!
I wanted to see the banana museum sooooo bad
Sup dude great video, again! Interesting to see what you encountered and new sights, thanks for sharing dude, don't eat them fish in that lake, lol! Keep posting
I wouldn’t dare get in much less eat the fish 😂
I'm actually trying to do a build like this and unfortunately I'm probably twice your age and I have no idea what I'm doing just recovering from cancer. I'm So loving your van. I love the yellow. Astrovan in good working order are hard to find. Great channel!!
You’ll find one soon Lauren! Just keep on looking
ur assessment of the place after thinking about it would appear to be accurate , where u said, there are people who seem to have completely given up , spot on
Love it!! Nothing about this adventure would be complete without a drone. Goog thing you were up that high. Wires everywhere. When I made my approach it was from straight over at 200ft to straight down because I had wires everywhere.
Kind of weird for me too. Around 1963 or 64 I caught my first fish at that lake. I think I was 4 years old. I'm pretty sure you were standing in the same spot where i caught it. at 20:21 Who knows but there was a small structure behind you that use to be a duck blind and the seat was under water about up to my step dads chest. It was a Corvina and i caught it using a stick with fishing line, a hook and a rock for a sinker. Sucks to see all the degradation. Thanks for sharing.
That’s too bad man, crazy a place can change that much in half a lifetime
hey bronson im glad to hear your in Alaska 4 6months, have enjoyed your adventures so far, will keep watching your vids, i took a short trip to see a friend in westchester pennsylvania! was an awsome day !! i may head to columbus ohio in august to see family beena year since i seen em!! take care bud !! hugs
Go for it!! Traveling is always worth the money
Nice to see you made it to Alaska! 👍🏻looking forward to the Alaska videos! ✌🏻🇨🇦 PS slab city looked cool.
Definitely had some amazement going on from you, and me as the viewer. You had me hooked the entire video. Good sense of adventure with a different look of Americana. Good vibes for you from Michigan to you enjoying your new Alaska job.
It’s freaking wild out here man, kinda wears me out just being around it because I can’t get comfortable
@@bgrace27 How's the fishing at the lodge job going? Tourists and locals wearing you down>Another adventure>Hang in there. Lots of daylight to get acclimated to.
@@SJVH1 yeah it’s a whole new culture that I’m getting used to. Not the same as Slab city but it’s kinda the same challenges of getting used to a new place 😂
The fishing is great though! Sockeye salmon and giant halibut!
@@bgrace27 Sales are way down on Great Value tuna. 😊Alaska is a challenge. You got it man!
@@SJVH1 it’s probably good to take a break from mercury poisoning 😂
I miss the desert so much,I'm in boring sun deprived Oregon!! I swear some day I'm moving there.. hopefully sooner than later
Hey, Oregon is amazing too
Welp another most exciting and interesting adventure to say the least. You're the best bro for creating awesome videos and narration:) Of course your pasta dish is very creative and yummy and made me hungry lol. I am glad you were able to visit the Slab and Bombay City, it's an interesting life style to visit but I wouldn't want to live it. And yes I am glad you didn't camp out over night in Slab City as who knows, you and Fred could have become part of some exotic art exhibit of some sort lol
Yeah bro, I didn’t know where to stay or where was safe so I said screw that
If you like that Place, you’ll Love Nelson ghost town with All different Antique vehicles
Oooooo I’ll look it up
That place is giving ME the creeps and I'm not even walking through there. 😂
Exactly, it’s a little off to me
Cool, beautiful sky.
The basic Laws of Human Decency & Kindness still Apply.
You cut your hair in Alaska why!?! I liked it growing long. I like this video it’s very entertaining good job and….your genuine curiosity is very entertaining my dear. I don’t have regrets today. Thank you for sharing.
I can’t get a haircut for the next 6 months, gotta cut it for preparation
Interesting/informative/entertaining. A good place to stop by/drink an " icy cold " beer. 🤗 .Then move on-!!!😉.
Exactly!
I hope that in the future you decide to do some international travel. This video sorta expresses the underbelly of U.S. couture. Seeing it helps you grow.
Peru 🇵🇪
Give us your experience of Alaska and tell us about mosquitos
I’ll have tons of that coming up in the next months
Great video ! 😎
That beach looks like an extention of slab city.
Exactly
u also need a jack russell the best camping guard dog
Forestry forest
I think the fact that so many things in this video seemed a little confusing to you made it one of the most entertaining videos. And you were respectful, while being completely puzzled by some of the locations and things that were going on. Bronson, I would have felt the same way.
I’m glad you enjoyed my confusion. Filming this thing gave me headaches all damn day because I was trying to go for a certain style of video and it constantly HAD to change due to the odd nature of these places.
Overall I think it worked though
@@bgrace27 And in the end, you pulled it off. But I hear ya, it can be time consuming with editing.
Great presentation! Slab City is the beginning of the post-apocalyptic wasteland in America!
I drive for Apple Maps in the Uk and thinking of coming back to the US to buy a van and road trip it again
How much was your van?
$7500 for the van $10k total for the build and van
Dinner looked effin great !! 😊
Haha thank you 🙏
Hey brother.. 1st off blessings on ur journeys..etc.. 2nd.. my brother works out of Prudoh Bay..hope all is well..
Dead horse is on my bucketlist… one day
Bro I gotta ask !! Did you drive thru Palm Springs? I could swore I saw you !! Damn bro I love me some slab city / Bombay beach. It's great to see your first impressions on this. Wait 4-5 years and you will be living there !!! Thanks again
I drove right by it! You just might have 👀
Btw fairly sure this was the Bombay Beach Biennale you attended. 😊
Mmmmm I see, thank you
If there's no one there to enforce the law then it's a lawless place
There are cops driving through town…
Come back this winter
Dont judge.
Wait you’re telling me this isn’t Mav?? Are you brothers lol
I know, it’s hard to believe but my acute sexiness sets me apart from him
OMgosh....this was such a funny video..."neither pair were good boobies!" When you were walking out onto Salton Sea I was literally holding my nose....that smell just never gets better. lol...
Somebody could turn that hill into a home.......seriously. it wouldn't be difficult at all
For real though! It’d be easy
Great video
Great video Bronson❤
82 degrees?? When was this, January??
April
@@bgrace27 Ah, still nice and cool in April.
Hey I am new to the channel and I would love to point out #vanlife for life;)
Nice vid Bronski!!!
Well maybe Everyone that Visits Slab City should take a BAG of Trash with when they Leave.. 😊
People have spent more time in Walmart than you spent there. 😅😢 But still have quite the option. Should I gather my opinion on you based on your video?
😅😢
Nope you should go yourself
If you talked to someone for 20 minutes, why didn't you put in the footage!? lol. Cmon, the people are the best part of Slab City. Idk about everyone else, but I don't care about the junk "art", I care bout seeing who's still kicken out there. I do wonder which camps are still around as well. I like your over all take on it though, so many videos romanticize it. Why Ski Goggles? (The sand)
He was very specific about NOT wanting to be filmed 😂
@@bgrace27 Fair enough lol. Like I said before, I really enjoyed your video and insight on the place, it shows it in the true light (its a glorified homeless encampment).
Fue una aventura muy extraña pero una buena aventura ❤

Love it
Has anybody told you that you look like Austin Butler the actor
All the time 😊
Food definitely looks good 👍🏾
From South Africa clocked in number 41 on chilax 3 day holiday, sitting next to a small dam, 4 rods lazy as heck.....
Yip, I would also be uncomfortable in that environment, watched a few u-tubers video's, I think it was Eric from nomadic fanatic who tried staying there semi perminent, but gave up. IF I remember right, had a fee things stolen and was eventually threatened..... not my cup of tea...
BTW. are you gonna try burning man ?
Be careful kid. Need to have some kind of protection. A pistol...etc
@@steverorabaw4487 I got one
@@bgrace27👌
STRAWBALE HOUSES. That is what this place needs.........combined with earth airtubes. Free air-conditioning and massive insulation
And trash removal 😂
hello there 😎
I'm not an Astrovan fan....my van was a 1986 Toyota Van....they looked way cooler and def more "Astro"
I’d have to agree with latter half of that comment but certainly not the first
Oatmeal believes you to be a little sensitive. She suggested you take classes in both fire eating and jujitsu. Stay cool and have fun 🎉
What?
your perceptive young man
When I went there at the turn of the century, the whole place smelled like dead fish. 🤠🤠
I bet 💀
Now you know what excess drug use can create !
Yup that’s right
You should have stayed overnight , give it a chance. 😂
Scary 🫣
Burning Man....;)
Life is a big dump,lol
It is a dump...obvious from watching slab videos lol
It’s a huuuuge dump
@@bgrace27 and dot, in my opinion…comes off like she could be the slab tramp.
👋👍👍😵💫💚🙏
❤️☀️🌀☀️❤️
Art is Amazing
Your too impressionable to be going to places like this.. grow some more hair on your chest then come back, kid
Okay thanks for the advice
@@bgrace27 do better
No them tv’s ain’t accurate. Just a bunch of loony’s.
Check out Ryan twomey he actually went threw the place this dudes a joke lost my sub .. he drove by and said that shit
Bye bye
Hahaha I love seeing/hearing other people’s experiences with the Salton Sea! I’ve been going every year since I was 19 (I’m 38 now) so I guess I take for granted how odd and unique of a space it is. I love it though and am so glad you got to experience it! #SaveTheSaltonSea 🪩
Pretty crazy out there
