An OBD2 connector that can control that will work. I use a carista model (the pro version thats just a little more expensive) and I've had mine off since the beginning.
Not Toyota's software, but I believe you can with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Unless there's some way to split the screen that I haven't figured out yet.

I just bought the trd sport 2024 tacoma and it has a button up down for tail gate but it doesn't do anything and can't find anything in the cluster menu.

I got the SR5 therefore I have lots more "poverty buttons" than you do. You refer to them as blanks. :)

It's in the settings of the digital dashboard. I think it's called "Rugged" style.
