@@muddman34 What's stopping a sports manga from being well written? You are saying as if some of the best manga and anime of all time aren't sports related. Ahem, Slam dunk, Haikyuu and hajime no ippo.
I perceive the repetition to be a kind of emulating real life, where you did learn a lesson once, but then you need to keep reminding yourself of the same thing multiple times to really drive the lesson through and make it a regular thing.
That's how I improve my English, constantly exposing my self on situations where I would feel uncomfortable or pushing myself a bit more than I would normally do, and constantly repeating words and mimic certain way of pronounce them, it might feel repetitive but is the only way to improve
I've got to agree, chapter 197 felt like a dejavu of a dejavu of the protagonist theme already talked about in the manga. I hope since the level isagi is reaching, this will be one of the last time he has to adapt as the underdog, but rather we will see a change in the narration and not just him adapting to the player he already knows. Then again next team to face us Italy and with barou I don't see the gimmick disappearing anytime soon
I don’t think it’s a deja vu I think it’s the author building on already established theme. I also think Isagi will usually be under dog in some sense because he’s based off of a player fillippo inzhagi who was not known for technical skills but rather his positioning and mindset, also like a muller style, but as a player Isagi is and will always be a force to be reckoned with.
Is it really Isagi being an underdog if almost the ENTIRE field of players are going against Isagi? They all see that he’s not a trash player and throughout the whole match he’s focusing on if his current self is enough for the big leagues. Now with Metavision I doubt anyone will be able to say Isagi is the underdog now
Honestly you raise a good point with the deja vu aspect of it all. I love sports manga but many of them (including the best) seem to fall under that pattern. The all striker cast does limit things though.
One of the things I really really appreciate about blue lock in particular is that we see a whole cast of characters grow and develop, it's not just the main character and the feeling of a known face still being a threat, at least to me, makes it feel great even when it becomes repetitive
Pls try Aoashi. A Football manga which is very close to reality and has unique perceptive of footballer. I think you will love it. Gaint killing and e blues are also good football manga which are worth mentioning.
Reading Blue Lock and watching the World Cup has inspired me to play football again.. One more thing, I think a lot of manga; including sports, have that repetitiveness you mentioned, where main protagonist faces an opponent who is seemingly unbeatable and then monologues about their ideals and motivations and suddenly, he has an ace up his sleeve that he can use to be victorious.. it's a common trope in manga!
My friend said it best, if you don't like Blue Lock, change your perspective as a fuck you to the normal sports anime along with a survival thriller show. But if you watch football and are not a casual, you will not like it. I applaud Masked Man for following through with the bet. Ego or no ego does not matter, for me as a defender (used to play like Rudiger and would launch long range kicks thinking I was CR7, Messi and Zlatan), I consider team chemistry more important as a team on paper with the best of the best will not always deliver especially in important situations. Blue Lock has one of the best narratives, art, and character writing in sports writing as it not only focuses on Isagi but the other side characters. Remember Masked Man, the Cameroonian goat Samuel Eto'o and Chelsea's best in Didier Drogba, considered two of the greatest African players. They had ego, they were strikers, they won a lot, a good case for Blue Lock's Ego ideology working. But if you watch their matches, their selflessness in assisting when they could have scored gave them not only their league titles but Champions League trophies against more selfish teams.
Except I watch/love footy and have been a fan since 2005 (I'm 29) and I absolutely love this series. Why do you people always say "If you're not a casual fan you won't like it", that's absolute bullshit lol
@@tokoya9 Its so simplistic, I used to think that way until I stopped and looked at the game differently. Thanks to All or Nothing, I learned that ego might not help always win games. Its a manga about bouncing back and having a competitive mindset. I stated that Blue Lock aint for me but I have praised its writing, art and characters.
@@tokoya9 Same, I’ve loved football my entire life and this manga deepened that love, people nowadays just like getting in their own feelings about stuff and complaining about something showing a different perspective and actually working lmao, I’ve loved the series since chapter 1
I mean I think the main issue is a lot of football fans think of manga like it's a football manga about the game and not about individualism. The issue masked man had in his original video where he said that they act like ball hogs made no sense as a criticism given the plot of the manga is about making someone with good individual skills. If I wanted to read a manga about the game of football I'd just read any of the other ones that are about the actual game and not a competition for a specific part of football. Though everyone is free to their own opinions and taste, I just disagree with that as a criticism in particular.
@@AStrangeTrap i think Blue Lock is weird in making a case that to win the world cup you need to have the best striker. So it dismisses midfielders and defenders and wingers and goalkeepers role in winning the world cup. So if you make someone great on individual skills with the ego of Blue Lock, i expect ball hogging to be the least of a manager's concerns. They would play like Pele before there was an offside rule.
His other mangas are wild too. He did Kamisama no Iutoori where he'd literally introduce a new character and then right after going through their super sad backstory, he would kill them off in the next panel lmao.
Earned my respect, much better video compared to the previous in my opinion because this time it felt like you put your biases aside and took the story for what it is. Still tho Argentina for the win haha
I think blue lock is one of the best mangas I’ve ever read, I like the sports psychology, twists and battle shounen type action. Isagi and the crew are great characters to follow, who all get to shine. The story is about finding a striker with a world class formula to reproduce goals in football so there is going to be a grinding nature to the story, it kinda reminds me of solo leveling. The author does an amazing job establishing a foundation and building on it brick by brick. Reading this series has genuinely improved how I think about challenges in life.
Ever since the season 2 animation became the hot topic on the internet recently, I've come acrossed so many Blue Lock contents on RUclips. It made me curious and somewhat interested to reread the manga. I used to try and read the manga but dropped it at the earlier chapters. @@nurnadhirahsaing6169Blue Lock is a very hostile environment but you also have relationships like Isagi x Bachira who are bffs and rainbow and sunshine stuff. Or Isagi x Hiori. So I it does definetly have wholesomeness as well.
I feel like the repetitive nature of Blue Lock so far mainly comes from them still competing in this blue lock format where they are all trying to devour each other to grow. I think we'll see more important games and implementation of teamwork and different positions if we get to see games after they all essentially "graduate" from blue lock and go professional
As a high performing athlete who has dealt with an serious injury inhibiting me for months, ego and confidence building have been the best forms of recovery for me to raise my level to where it needs to be. The blue lock is real
I would recommend Ao Ashi if you're looking for a soccer series that's more realistic and truer to the sport. To me Ao Ashi is more like Haikyuu or Slam Dunk in how the series represent the sport, while Blue Lock is more like Kuroko no Basket which is a more exaggerated version of the sport. Both can be good and it largely depends on what you like, but Ao Ashi seems closer to what you'd enjoy in a sports series.

Blue Lock is definitely real if it’s able to motivate anyone to pick up football. The energy and egocentrism is hard to beat and while it’s definitely not my favorite sports manga I am glad you enjoyed it. Who is your favorite character(s)? I have a feeling you’d be really invested in Sae
people who say messi doesn’t have an ego is dumb, it definitely takes some ego to believe u can dribble past half of the team and score and he actually does it
A year later and I am still advocating for you to read Giant Killing. To be honest I think that is probably a more accurate description of what actually happened in the group stages than Blue Lock
Dammit man, you might’ve convinced me to check it out because of the struggle of coming back from an injury & the fact I’m in grad school to be a sports psychologist
The sports psychology aspect of Blue lock is what I think makes it really shine/unique compared to other sport animes out there. Sure, Blue Lock has its hyped matches and character growth, but its unique take on the psychology behind the sport and the concept of what it means to be a player is what has me entralled
I'm watching blue lock right now and Chigiri's arc really resonates with me despite me being neither a professional athlete nor even a football player. I had a knee injury while simply jumping for a block (volleyball) and am still recovering. Even with most of the pain gone simple putting strain on my knee is something im still kinda terrified of (what if it could happen again). The mental strength it requires for someone who much more serious than me to push through must be absolutely crushing. Tldr: I'm very glad you talked Chigiri's arc since it's one that's way too relatable.
Mask's criticism with Blue lock is how I feel with sports manga/anime in general. It all feels the same and repetitive. Blue lock is the only manga I'm up to date with ( besides chainsaw man ) just due to the amazing art, Relatable characters. Their struggles, and ideology. I'm not a soccer fan but I can really get behind them just purely based on how passionate they are about trying to be #1 and doing whatever it takes to achieve it.
Chigiri is full of it. I get being scared to play after an injury, but going to an elite training program and sabotaging your team by not playing your best is a dick move. He should've stuck to playing at his high school if he couldn't "give up the dream".
The Craziest part about me that some people and my teammates don't know is that bluelock and aoashi both made me go back to football / soccer and I continued watching both anime and practicing and then blame two months later I get signed with are semi pro team so I would like to thank both creaters of these great soccer /football manga's i also learnt alot from both main protagonists and due to that I've become what you call an eagle on the field and I play midfielder lol aight that's enough of my bluelock nonsense I'm blaze and I'm out peaccccceeee ✌
Midfielders deserve way more credit man, have to run a marathon every match and get no credit for it. Edit: *THE MIDFIELDERS MANIFESTO* To the plebs in replies who have clearly never kicked a ball in their life saying - "tHeRe's mOrE tO iT tHaN jUsT rUnNiNg' - i never implied that there wasnt. My point is that football is a physically demanding sport that REQUIRES you to cover large distances in order to play it in the first place. The job of a midfielder is both to defend, attack, and manage the pace and flow of the game. In the last 10-15 years there has been a major shift towards PRESSING, as midfielder you are now expected to cover distances above 10km per 90. Gone are the days of mesut ozil-like midfielders whos only job is to be a creative playmaker with no resposibility of tracking back. Wihout a hardworking midfield your defence has no shield and your attack has no build up. Sure you can rely on individual skill of your defense and attack to an extent but to succesfully achieve LITERALLY ANYTHING tactically, consistently over 90 minutes you need hungry motherfuckers to RUN and work hard to: keep the ball, transition the attack, make key passes/assists, press etc. For fucks sakes how do you think space is created during attacks, EVERYONE (except maybe cbs) not just midfielders run into space and drag opposing defenders with them. Even to get in a scoring position you have to RUN. Even shit like positional play requires you to run to get back into position in the first place. I could go on and on about chasing loose balls, the role of cdms etc. The one constant in football is you have to RUN. Only idiots and armchair fans who dont know shit see players like jude bellingham, benardo silva, sofianne amrabat, kante or even prime yaya toure and their running off and on the ball and call it irrelevant. Fuck blue lock, fuck fans blinding obsession and misintepretation of goals and assists statistics and fuck armchair "pundits", actually watch a game or even better play it for yourself to understand wtf is going on. - signed an angry representative of the mildielders union, peace ✌🏿🎤

Try Ao Ashi. I prefer it more than Blue Lock (to be fair, i dropped Blue Lock so I don't how the story progresses). It pays closer homage to the sport and it really makes you appreciate football. The story and characters are not revolutionary or anything, but it's very well written. It captures the journey of what it takes to become a professional football player really well.
Just fyi this manga is written by Kaneshiro Muneyuki who did jagaaaaaan and Bokutcahi ga Yarimashita which are both great manga with some deep themes so I highly recommend them if you haven't heard of them before
This manga certainly has its problems, like how the mc looks like he powers downand has to relearn his skill after a certain point where the manga is at rn, but ill say, barou is a really cool character, and the way they treated him later was really well done. Also theres some really motivating things here, if you are in a rut or something, this manga does list some good examples of pratices to be better at whatever you want to accomplish " what would you do if you were the ideal you?", " if you accept a defeat positively you wont ammount to much because you wont massacre yourself with never making that mistake again" , and a few others , it gave me some great pointers into getting my life back in order , and hey, its working. 3rd/4th favorite behind Vinland saga, berserk and around the same place with kokou no hito, while kokou is an amazing story and this is dumb hype fun , this one really is hype
Blue Lock is great series even despite its flaws. It has a formula, and it does it well even if it's a bit corny sometimes. But Ao Ashi clears it by a considerable margin IMO. In pretty much every department besides art.

Honestly you can't really say that ao ashi clear as blue lock as a sport anime can't really be compared to any other. I don't know what are the departments that u are talking about but I can guess that you mean plot, characters ecc. I can say that plot wise it's indeed not even close since ao ashi is a extremely well built story about a player with every human aspect of his life even outside the field, with drama, relationships and much more. Characters wise obviously ao ashi clears too for more or less the same reason. But you can't really use those department as a comparison since blue lock really doesn't care about those to begin with. It's an edgy/hype manga that keeps things exciting every week by purposely removing every possible aspect beside football games. Dialogs also are funny as hell as they are only players flaming and insulting each others. I'd say it's much similar to solo leveling, the purpose is NOT to make a good/complex story, it's just an hype machine and they got that so damn much.
@@Giacuzz Yeah, exactly. And I should have clarified, I'm not talking about the anime (I've only seen 1 episode of BL and none of the AA adaptation). im glad you revisited this manga, i remember being kind of bummed when you said you dropped it and wouldn't pick it up again, but it was understandable one of the things people hate (mainly the entitled people) was the fact that we saw so many different characters getting their shining moments. idk why they hated it i loved it. the art is super cool too, and i think the artist for blue lock being the same as the artist for jagan is awesome. the art is one of this mangas really strong points it's fair for you to think it's all samey, i just hope that once we get to the world cup, it deviates from that formula as the main character should be a force to be reckoned with. knock on wood doe

I find it really interesting that you are one of those people with the rare crossover of interests that is sports and manga/anime. Just interesting to hear someone from that camps side of things. I used to always say I hated sports myself when I was younger until I realized I have actually done sports my whole life, I grew up wrestling and just never really considered it a sport because its not a team sport. Now I'm an amateur sumo wrestler. I just find it interesting how combat sports just inherently seems to occupy a different mental place than team sports like football or football (I know I'm being pedantic with that pun). However though there is a lot of overlap in the mentalities of the practitioners of both, in combat sports its also like a 90/10 split on mental preparedness vs physical preparedness. I found that out in spades at my first tournament, shit like having to go piss constantly, just my nerves being a complete wreck. It's actually mental to be able to fight people weekly in practice and then to be legit shaking at having to do it on a stage where it matters. I got a mountain of respect for anyone that can consistently perform under that pressure.

I watched the anime and picked up the manga where it left off, I'm almost caught up with it, absolutely love it, only have like a few tiny criticisms, I half-agree with the repetitiveness, I think that's only with the central message being repeated constantly, but it didn't take away from enjoyment b/c it kept raising the scale of the games, and the characters went through new and deeper developments within the philosophy.
Just a small correction (which doesn't matter, tbh) : The story is by the same guy who did "Jagaaaaaan" but the artists are different. *Yuusuke Nomura* was the artist for Blue Lock and *Kensuke Nishida* did the art for Jagaaaaaan, both amazing artists. Great video nonetheless.
I haven't read the manga for myself but I have been in love with the anime adaptation thus far. Blue lock for me is a story that gets me hyped up,a story that might not be super complex or anything but is entertaining to watch.I'll definitely read the manga as well.
I honestly don't love Blue Lock as much as I love Ao Ashi, but there is an appeal to Blue Lock. Obviously it is using typical Shonen power set up to make the visual more interesting, and it really works quite well for those who like these stuff. But football-wise, it's a little bit inspired by how football tactics evolves throughout history, starting from 11 forward players, to long ball plays, and then the flair style of play. Maybe they will go on to catenaccio, tiki-taka and false-9 formations in the future.
I had the same feeling when I watched the first 2 episodes of the series having followed and played the sport religiously for more than a decade. It felt like they were trashing on the importance of teamwork and synergising with your teammates to win the game. But it definitely preached less of the "I'm doing whatever is best for me wwtv the cost" as the series went on and reverted back to usual sports manga tropes, which tbh loses a little of its uniqueness but I think its definitely good for the series. Almost finished the building 5 arc now and I think it has the potential to be up there with the likes of Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo, and Haikyuu as the best sports anime of all-time, and to a certain extent, influence a lot of people to be invested in the sport.

Its not big complain as the series is something very much enjoyable from normal pov then to look at it from a critical pov.

I can't. Its just too stupid. As a player and watcher of football it makes me cringe every second from the ridiculousness of it all. The egoist part of it is obvious and the same for all the players in every position not just striker. Anime like Haikyu and Ace of the Diamond have it's over the top moments but nothing as cringe as Blue Lock. Edgy sports anime for people who don't play sports.
The manga started with the higher up complaining about the result of the 2018 WC, when ro16 has always been Japan's best result in the competition, not to mention they were quite good that year. Reading that just made me kinda angry. Also, if you want a football manga, read Kattobi Itto and its sequel series Buttobi Itto, its really quacky
I hate this manga, it's edgy, fundamentally wrong and it's message is something incredibly toxic for yourself and your peers, in any kind of situation applicable, but I get it can be entertaining to some people and I respect that
I’m following the anime and Isagi is a good character to follow and I loved Chigiri’s backstory. Jagaan should get an adaptation. The manga’s situation isn’t realistic but it is enjoyable to watch for many. It does inspire following a dream again. Isagi is similar in skill and vision in some ways to Ashito from Ao Ashi
It fell into the trap of having too many stars. Everyone is a striker, everyone wants to be the best, and while I like the variation in the characters and the way they each have their own story and personality, they often stick around for too long and inflate the length of each match. I think the issue may be alleviated if they stop insisting on every position being played by a forward(who will obviously outperform specialists in their own roles, but I digress) but I think that's pretty far off even in the manga.

I also think Isagi will usually be under dog in some sense because he’s based off of a player fillippo inzhagi who was not known for technical skills but rather his positioning and mindset, also like a muller style, but as a player Isagi is and will always be a force to be reckoned with.
its gonna continue to be the same lmao
Is it really Isagi being an underdog if almost the ENTIRE field of players are going against Isagi? They all see that he’s not a trash player and throughout the whole match he’s focusing on if his current self is enough for the big leagues. Now with Metavision I doubt anyone will be able to say Isagi is the underdog now
Honestly you raise a good point with the deja vu aspect of it all. I love sports manga but many of them (including the best) seem to fall under that pattern. The all striker cast does limit things though.
its a sports shounen, odds of it becoming different are slim to none.

Bluelock is not like Kuroko no basket tho, sure the moves are unrealistic for players in their ages but the moves are real and not beyond realism.

A year later and I am still advocating for you to read Giant Killing. To be honest I think that is probably a more accurate description of what actually happened in the group stages than Blue Lock
Dammit man, you might’ve convinced me to check it out because of the struggle of coming back from an injury & the fact I’m in grad school to be a sports psychologist
definitely tap in. my favorite part/s of the story are when you get a look into the phycological aspect of what makes a character keep fighting.
The moment I read the title I started cackling
A little correction:
The story is made by the same guy as jagaaan, not the art. The artist of blue lock made Dolly kill kill

To the plebs in replies who have clearly never kicked a ball in their life saying - "tHeRe's mOrE tO iT tHaN jUsT rUnNiNg'

My point is that football is a physically demanding sport that REQUIRES you to cover large distances in order to play it in the first place. The job of a midfielder is both to defend, attack, and manage the pace and flow of the game.
In the last 10-15 years there has been a major shift towards PRESSING, as midfielder you are now expected to cover
distances above 10km per 90.

Maybe they will go on to catenaccio, tiki-taka and false-9 formations in the future.
btw, please do an Ao Ashi video @TheMaskedMan
I had the same feeling when I watched the first 2 episodes of the series having followed and played the sport religiously for more than a decade. It felt like they were trashing on the importance of teamwork and synergising with your teammates to win the game. But it definitely preached less of the "I'm doing whatever is best for me wwtv the cost" as the series went on and reverted back to usual sports manga tropes, which tbh loses a little of its uniqueness but I think its definitely good for the series.

yeah but they didnt win the wc did they?
This vid really came out after both Japan and Spain got knocked out lmao
I hate this manga, it's edgy, fundamentally wrong and it's message is something incredibly toxic for yourself and your peers, in any kind of situation applicable, but I get it can be entertaining to some people and I respect that
Minor correction; same *writer* as Jagaaan, Muneyuki Kaneshiro. The artist is Nomura Yuusuke, whose previous work was Dolly Kill Kill.
Gotta check out Ao Ashi or Be Blues
I’m following the anime and Isagi is a good character to follow and I loved Chigiri’s backstory. Jagaan should get an adaptation. The manga’s situation isn’t realistic but it is enjoyable to watch for many. It does inspire following a dream again. Isagi is similar in skill and vision in some ways to Ashito from Ao Ashi
It's funny because you kind of recommend blue lock for me in your last video
I wonder if you have ever read Eyeshield 21 and how it would fit in your vision of sport manga (+ the drawings by Murata are top tier of course)
mangaka said Blue Lock was inspired by eye shield 21, too, May have to check it out
It fell into the trap of having too many stars.
Everyone is a striker, everyone wants to be the best, and while I like the variation in the characters and the way they each have their own story and personality, they often stick around for too long and inflate the length of each match.
I think the issue may be alleviated if they stop insisting on every position being played by a forward(who will obviously outperform specialists in their own roles, but I digress) but I think that's pretty far off even in the manga.
loved that I read the manga before the anime. Top tier manga anime so far is ok for me.
I’m disappointed masked you betrayed my trust on a fundamental level I don’t know if I can forgive you.
it's a great series. hope you truly enjoyed.
