After reading both 20th Century Boys and Monster and trying to find similarities and differences between the two, I wondered which of these Urasawa wrote first. To think he wrote BOTH at the same time is mind-boggling.
My favourite is Monster, by far. I absolutely loved the nuanced and sophisticated manner of which Urasawa explored themes such as personal identity, nature VS nurture, and the inherent darkness VS goodness of humanity. I was simply blown away by just how much character development is given to extremely minor characters, making every one of them feel like an actual person - regardless of whether we see them for a single arc, or even a single chapter. Johan was also a very captivating and unique villain, an enigma that ties the whole story together. Monster is undoubtedly a masterpiece, and I don't think it'll ever be dethroned as my favourite anime AND manga series of all time. As for Urasawa's other series, I'd put Billy Bat second, followed by Pluto, and then 20CB. That's probably due to a lack of personal interest in sci-fi robots though, rather than a judgment of the stories themselves. I also enjoyed Master Keaton and Mujirushi, but I wouldn't rank them anywhere near the same level of storytelling as the four series above. Finally, with regards to Asadora, it kinda reminds me of a Ghibli film - we have a brave young woman as the protagonist, her quirky but kind-hearted family & friends, and of course, airplanes. I'm quite curious to see where this series goes, since it seems to be a mix of Urasawa's earlier works (sporty women SoLs) and his most acclaimed series (mystery/suspense thrillers). Thanks for making this video! It's always great to see more discussion on Urasawa series.
Each and every work of Urasawa was perfection. And also Dr.Tenma's character really proved that you don't really need a fleshed out backstory to be a perfect written protagonist.
Fair enough. I actually put Billy Bat below 20CB and Monster, since it start to go even more mythical. In fact for me, 20CB speaks more to me, namely as an adult. You watch them grow up and mature, and what childhood dream and moral they decide to keep vs what they decide to let go is what makes it attractive.

I love 20th century, one of the best told stories in fiction. I’ve yet to read Happy! And Yawara needs to be scanned first. But of what I’ve read he’s an elite mangaka with every work in my top 20
Urasawa is hands down of one the greatest mangakas ever, I have almost completed all of his works including the Big 4 but man is the story always so captivating in all of them? Like I read one of his underrated mangas named Asadora and even it was on par if not better than Billy Bat, Monster or Pluto, this man knows his art well and he delivers each and every time.
Urasawa is one of the greatest mangaka of all time. His stories are genius. My only nitpick would be that a majority of his series all have the same art style, specifically the character designs. It isn't exactly a bad thing because I really like the art style. However, it does make it hard to instantly know which characters are from what series, since a lot of them are very similar. It does make his art style very recognisable tho haha
Super Amazing video! I fell in love with Urasawa through Monster and it still stands as on of my all time favourites! Hi, first of all thank you so much for this video, I'm in love with Urasawa's work. I have a question about another manga tho, have you read Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind? I just ordered the manga box set and I'm really hyped, and I just wanted to know if you have read it :)
I’m not Ryley, but I’m decently well read and let me tell ya, what a story. The art is beautiful, and if you’ve watched the movie it really doesn’t do the manga justice. My favorite mangaka is Urasawa, so if you like him you’ll definitely love Nausicaa!
20th century boys is amazing! Saw the film adaptations for such a massive story they condensed it well and each of the films were pretty good. I'd like to read Pluto always heard about but haven't had the chance to read it. Happy and Sneeze I didn't know about but will look into soon
I stumbled on PLUTO at the Phoenix, Arizona main library about 10 years ago and enjoyed it. I need to buy it now that you've brought it back to my attention. Urasawa is now on my radar. Thanks.
With Monster still waiting on the shelf to be read, it is 20th century boys for me. Such a crazy trip with all these side notes and eastereggs to different kinds of media... A great piece of manga and it shares my personal favorite title along with Vinland Saga. But for completed series as of now, it is my favorite series by far.
What a great video! My personal favorite will always be Monster, because of the way it explores concepts of identity as defined by an individual, and constantly wonder how Urasawa would have approached some of the themes now in 2022. I've also been looking forward to any news about Billy Bat being localized - the announcement in April gave me just enough hope to keep looking for it ^^
Urasawa obviously know where is stories are going but there's a real flow to the way he layers his stories with twists, red earings, wholesome character moments there are a lot of Urasawa tropes it even gets grading when you read two series back to back yet it feels effortless. It works so well but it's kind of always the same kind of scenes, his way of telling his stories is very efficient and always works in the same ways with the particular narratives being strong enough to hold it up together. All of this to say, I'm not so surprised to learn Monster and Twentieth Century Boys were done concurrently, they really are done the same and have a lot of those Urasawa tropes I wouldn't be surprised if some storyboards were used for both series. I have not read his earlier works but since those seems to be his first thriller stories and those tropes being strong in Pluto and Billy Bat it would make sense to me that working on two mistery series at the same time cemented this way of storytelling.
I've only recently finished YAWARA's anime. I wasn't paying attention to the credits so I only found out it was by Urasawa after the fact. You're like one out of the two people I've seen give any recognition to YAWARA even though people talk about the author all the time. The other guy, I'm sure, didn't know who Urasawa was.
Great video! Thanks for taking the time for putting it together. Monster is my favorite, but I haven’t read Pluto yet because of stock issues! Happy Holidays!
20th Century Boys was the series that got me to start my manga collection, but I got into 20th Century Boys after watching the Monster anime adaptation. I’m kinda biased towards Monster to be my favorite because of this, but they are both awesome and very important for me. In regards to his material yet to be released in English, I’m really hoping we get Billy Bat although I don’t think that’ll happen anytime soon. I would definitively love to own Yawara and Happy physically, so let’s hope they get printed sometime soon!
thank you for doing this, i have 20th century on my tbr long time ago and pluto, i didn't know he's behind billy bat looking forward to reading urasawa
Really loving Asadora so far. I've also finished and enjoyed Monster and started 20th Century Boys. Love everything so far! Curious about Billy Bat and Happy after watching this! I want to collect Monster but last I checked it looked like the series was hard to get ahold of... at least in my area. I don't think the perfect editions are out of print but there does seem to be a hold up unfortunately.
Just also started looking online for perfect editions. Thankfully they're available in my area. Tries scouring physical stores but they're really hard to find.
I picked up Asadora from my nearby public library and now I've been constantly waiting for new release. Of course there's an alternate but I want the paper pages.
Thanks for the info. I used to not look it up who made it and just watch it (anime). Now i'm on the manga train and i can appreciate their work now. Currently interested on 20th centuries boys.
I've watched Monster Anime and I love Johan's Complexity as a villain and then I read 20th century boys. The way how plot moves is simply mind blowing & the unstoppable rush I had during the read of this story is the 2nd time I had reading a manga. 1st is Berserk
Hey, Monster is in my top three anime of all time. I’m now thinking of getting 20th century boys, would you recommend? I’m getting mixed reviews all over regarding this manga. Some say it’s good some say the 2nd half and ending is not good and it’s a drag. So I’m kinda confused. I enjoyed monster , tho in anime format.
@@mariovelan7380 20th century boys is actually good. The problem is during the ending things go a bit differently. Sometimes you wonder if it's practically possible but overall the antagonist is amazing. 20th century boys is a great story. Definitely worth reading
@@suraajgogeta5390 quick question the ending can you say it’s like attack on Titan? Maybe not story wise but you know like there’s a crowd that hate the ending for attack on Titan, because it’s not what they expected … I personally loved the ending and understood what the creator was trying to say.
Yes he has read it, he reviewed it in another video.
Yeah I've watched the movie multiple times. I grew up with Ghibli movies :) So I'm insanely excited to read it!
@@shutoutvideos3986 Really? I looked it up but coudn't find it. Do you have any idea wich video it is?
where can i read it online?
Monster interests me the most. I'm definitely gonna read it.
i love how no one skips his videos and the "most replayed part" is just people skiping the opening
Urasawa is a genuis his story telling is so good and my fav is Monster
Fantastic video! Loved learning more about series we haven't received in the states.
What a great video! My personal favorite will always be Monster, because of the way it explores concepts of identity as defined by an individual, and constantly wonder how Urasawa would have approached some of the themes now in 2022. I've also been looking forward to any news about Billy Bat being localized - the announcement in April gave me just enough hope to keep looking for it ^^
Great overview of a legendary and passionate creator.
-- We need some YAWARA! in English, man.
Urasawa is literally my favorite Mangaka, his work was probably the final nail in the coffin for me deciding to major Social and Human services
20th century boys just transported the feeling of japanese childhood so unbelievably well
I love 20th Century Boys, but I would really be interested in reading Billy Bat
20th Century Boys was the series that got me to start my manga collection, but I got into 20th Century Boys after watching the Monster anime adaptation. I’m kinda biased towards Monster to be my favorite because of this, but they are both awesome and very important for me. In regards to his material yet to be released in English, I’m really hoping we get Billy Bat although I don’t think that’ll happen anytime soon. I would definitively love to own Yawara and Happy physically, so let’s hope they get printed sometime soon!
That intro so gives me the How I met ...vibes..Great content there 🔥
thank you for doing this, i have 20th century on my tbr long time ago and pluto, i didn't know he's behind billy bat
looking forward to reading urasawa
Just wanted to comment that Pluto just got an anime adaptation. Absolutely delivered.
Very insightful. Thank you for your research and hard work. We all appreciate it!
Monster and Pluto are my all time favorites.
Currently 20th century boys is my favorite of his works, and I would love an English edition of billy bat!
@@eradict Glad you had some luck. I ended up buying a complete set off ebay :)
Love these kinds of videos! This should be a series or atleast cover other famous manga authors!
I picked up Asadora from my nearby public library and now I've been constantly waiting for new release. Of course there's an alternate but I want the paper pages.
やっと、あさどらの読者に出会えた
I'll wait for the Pluto adaptation as long as it needs
This was an interesting and in depth summary. Well done on this content. More content like this please.
Not many readers appreciate the slow-burn format of Urasawa but I think it's very captivating. I'm all for the journey not the destination.
You think someone like me probably will have no issues with the ending if it ended somewhat like AoT? I know it’s a weird question to have, about to commit some serious money on 20CB just want to know if it’s worth it. Loved monster and Pluto too btw. Was genuinely going to go in blind with this series then started seeing all this mix reviews and was kinda caught off guard. Sorry for the lengthy essay. 😅
@@mariovelan7380 tbh it's not that bad. When I read 20th century boys I don't know there people were people thinking the ending is bad. Infact even in the final arc there are good moments for important characters & there are good plottwists aswell. In the end I'd say I really liked it. So it depends on how a reader thinks.
@@suraajgogeta5390 alright. Thanks man. I think ill just get it and read it for myself and find out. Loved Urasawa’s Pluto and monster although put in anime format. Don’t think I’ll be disappointed with 20thCB.
huge fan of mystery stories and monster is an all time favorite! one of the best in it's genre.
Can't wait for Pluto anime too come out looks so danm good
Naoki Urasawa is the undisputed GOAT of manga
Fuck, I love the art of all the manga covers
wow. that´s a very good video.
well done, man
I´m curious to know more about Asadora. I´ve heard that this may be quite a long series that will still take some couple of years to finish.
also, about Billy Bat, I do wish to still be able to purchase the physical volumes of this series
Yawara also seems to be a big one.
I’ve only read Pluto and 20th Century Boys so far but my favorite is 20th Century Boys. Probably the best manga I’ve ever read.
20th century boys and monster are 2 of the best mystery/drama stories ive ever read, hands down a top-few mangaka of all time.
Love to see a video like this about Tezuka. Very cool
A lot more difficult to do considering Tezuka has probably 100 or so manga series he's created compared to the less than 10 of most creators.
I love 20 Century boys, monster and Pluto the best mangas
I love Yawara and Monster!
Nice video btw.
im so glad you made a video about that legend!
I'm a big Naoki Urasawa. Thank you for this video. Gave me a lot of ideas on what to read next. I really loved 20th Century Boys.
I just recieved 20th Century Boys Perfect Edition Vol. 1 Today 5.18.23
It is my very 1st Manga. I stumbled upon it after watching MONSTER ANIME which I'm on episode 62 of 75 now .
Amazing video. We need a similar one about Tsutomo Nihei.
He is one I have planned for a future video.
OMG LOL the intro to ur show is classic! Like an old 90s sitcom! 😂 Instant sub and like from me. Now I'm gonna continue watching! 😁
All of them are good but it's amazing how he released 3 classics back to back, I'm sure you can guess which ones.
wow im actually amazed by the fact that Pluto is your favorite from all those great works.
i personally love the manga but the end didnt go so well to me. so for me is a 8/10.
but i fricking love Monster and 20th century boys and there are my favorites! Urasawa is an amazing mangaka and person as it seems from his youtube channel.
also i really want Billy bat to localized and the hope that its going to be translated one day hold me from reading that on the internet :(
oh and great video man i really love to watch your collection videos!
My gosh i like that book for Monster and 20thCB
He is my most favourite mangaka or even authors of all time. I adored 20thCB and monster is just something out of this world. Johan is my fav antagonist and character in fiction. Pluto is a great sci-fi mystery story. He does everything right and everything links soo smoothly
The way Naoki draws emotions and faces is only comparable to the nuanced artistry of Studio Ghibli. It's very recognizeable and unique.
This!! I’ve only seen the monster anime but I had a few moments where I thought the two were similar
commenting two years later, after having watched Pluto on Netflix.
I thought it was pretty good, but Monster is still my favorite.
My favorite is Monster. I will read 20th Century Boys now to check. I didn't know that these two were made at the same time. This is impressive.
Thank you for this video man, brilliant!
Monster changed the way I genuinely view the world. One of two Mangas to do that to me. Punpun being the second. Both are great mangakas
