Great stuff. Realistically, being (at least slightly) outnumbered might much rather represent the reality on the battlefield, than 1 on 1 situations. Of course managing to be victorious is then material for legends, while realistically the prime objective would have been to get out of it alive by getting closer to the own comrades and then to even out the ratio.
Thank you! Yes, and for all of those reasons I like to practice navigating different scenarios regularly as they require different skills that you wouldn't learn from 1v1 only. Thanks for watching!

Yep, definitely! We used some muskets for our recent boarding scenario aswell. Lots of fun!

I love this kind of "sparring game"! To me, learning 1vs1 is just the basic, and games/scenarios like this is actually the real deal.
Yeah, in the context of earlier military sabre like what we do it makes complete sense and develops separate skills like group coordination and multidirectional awareness which you'd have needed aboard a ship an many more places.

Good stuff, should be more of it! Not many encounters occured on polished floorboards. The obstacles are a good touch. I like to force opponents back into obstacles. We have permission to use a small arboretum nearby (after snake season) which will provide uneven ground, trees and low branches to snare blades. This sort of scenario will demonstrate why keeping the blade in front is critical (as in sabre and cutlass drills).
Can you suspend multiple 'battle' ropes from the ceiling to fight around? It's not until you push the envelope that it becomes apparent why things were done certain ways.
Thanks! Yeah, doing this outside would be even better and we will try it at some point. However, I also like the controlled environment of a gym. Safety is a concern we want to have as much control over as possible when mixing different skill levels. The ropes are actually a brilliant idea that' I'll shamelessly steal! :)
Thank you so much for this video! It was really interesting and realistic experiment. It would be great to see more experiments like this based on historical accounts or not. Also will be interesting to see this kind mele with another weapons. For example, sword and buckler for all, or rapier and dagger, or even longswords - what ever. And, if it possible of course, it would be greate to see some key moments in slow-mo.

Can't promise any other weapon systems tho as we use our regular sabre class for these.
Awesome battle scenario! What would be your strategy guide for attacker and defenders?

For the defender: Don't let yourself be pushed towards a wall or get surrounded from multiple sides. You can use walls/obstacles to your advantage. Maneuver in a way so you only have to deal with 1-2 opponents at once.
For the attackers: Try to do the opposite but in a coordinated way so you don't impede each other too much.
What kind of shin protection would you suggest for steel saber? I am from Poland and im thinking about field hockey shin guards alongside spes knee protection, not much alternatives beside it (spes shin guards kinda bad).
What you're suggesting is actually a sensible option! Personally, I use Rey hockey shin guards at the moment. If you manage to fit the hard SPES knee cups on top that would be even better!
Why do some Websters use bucklers?
Some European officers in India incorporated local equipment into their kit, so we thought it might be fun to try that!
