He cried because he actually saw the ghost of a boy who had an unfulfilled dream , he made it possible to quickly achieve a fragment of the dream , but seeing someone your age die and realising they didn't get to live their dream would make anyone cry. The Alternate Universe Ash is shown to understand human as well as Pokemon emotions well. As seen with his interactions with Coco and all the people of the movie before that.

@@SunnySixStreet this episode is an alternate universe taking place after a movie, this is not the same Ash that we were with in all the years he existed, just another Ash, he hasn't gone in other regions, he hasn't made friends that the normal Ash made, he isn't champion anywhere, just an Ash
It’s probably a combo of various things and emotions. Grief for the friend he’s just met who’s life ended before he could set off to achieve his dream. Frustration for missing his opportunity to see his dad and appreciation for the “small things” that are still around and that he can still enjoy like his mom’s cooking. It’s also a message for us who have watched him for 25 years. It’s of him saying his goodbyes to us as he leaves us.

See the whole point of this episode was not about ash’s dad but it was for us. The secret message in the episode tells that even though ash is leaving after 25 years, we gotta be happy with the time we had with him

He was probably thinking of a few different things revolving around Haruto, this being one of them, possibly that he can still eat he can still be with his family, eat his favorite food cooked by his mom, or maybe it just hit him that someone died and how sad his parents must be

I think Ash was grieving for Haruto and his parents, Ash has never really shown any issue with his father being far away before and i think eating his mom’s food made him realize that Haruto will never get to experience that himself
Hear me out guys, this might sound far fetched but the secret message is that we are Ash’s dad. All the support and care we gave since the first episode till the last helped Ash in his journey. It’s a way for the author to tell us that he’s grateful for having such a great fan base and for all the love we have to the Pokémon all these years.
His Aura abilities????? I know Ash could do that but I didn’t think they’d be consistent! Dude could do that since the movie where they first introduced Lucario for crying out loud!

I think the message was about apreciating every moment with your loved ones and that's how haruto's family felt after his sudden passing. With Ash's mom cooking him his favorite food might be something related to enjoying every moment with your loved ones
I cried after this episode. It really feels like the show tried to tell us that nothing good lasts forever and that we need to enjoy this beautiful series while it lasts.

I'm sorry I couldn't help myself, I know Haruto is basically a ghost, and that episode was basically Ash helping him pass on, but I guess in the AU universe Ash's dad is alive, I don't know if he's alive in the main universe, though I once had a theory back when I was a kid watching the indigo League season and thought Ash's dad was actually the Kanto regions champion, could be true or not, though it means my waifu Delia is not available 😢, all jokes aside, it made me a little happy that Ash help that kid with his unfinished business so he can ascend.

Honestly I feel that pretty hard. I lost my dad when I was young and always after seeing someone having fun with their dad or a Father’s Day event I’d always cry. Every April when his birthday rolls around I still get depressed cause I miss him.

This may be sad, but the most saddets part of all Pokemon Series is when Brock loses his mom when she's trying to pull the family back together, but later passed away. His dad is a pokemon trainer, and later, never be heard again. This would lead Brock to not reach his dream as a Pokemon Breeder and had to take care of his many brothers and sisters. I truly felt sorry for this man to suffer like this.

I got to play pokemon..maybe years ago till this day.my son plays now taught him..taught down from father to son..I told.him to teach his son to play .collect.battle.draw.study.and learn.. Pokemon was great for us..and thank you for this small gem of a world.

I think the crying was Ash reflecting on how lucky he was. Remember Haruto was literally a boy who mirrored Ash in many ways. From his overwhelming love for Pokemon to his hat even being stolen by a mankey. Ash realized that there are those out there, who for unfortunate circumstances, who had their dreams cut short long before their time. In Ash's case he had many close calls on his Adventures but he still managed to become the world champion and can still continue to journey. But Haruto never got to see how big it all truly was. Meeting the spirit of Haruto was a wake up call that we sometimes take life for granted. Him just missing his father was an after thought because as long as he and his father still breathe, then he will see his father again. But what of Haruto? Haruto could only watch his parents from a distance filled with regret. And all he could do was watch his parents suffer, incapable of really moving on. And Ash had to mediate between the one who passed on and the ones left behind.
I think the reason why ash cried isn't something that happens inside this episode, but something that connects with us. When ash started crying, I started crying too, because I realized that this was the end of pokémon journeys (I know there are still 11 more special episodes, but the journeys series ends here). Ash is going to leave the anime, the character that impacted my childhood. I think each one of us have a story with the anime, something special to us, and I cried because I connected to it

I personally think Ash's father is the narrator in a way. The narrator speaks to and for us while remaining faceless, so I'd like to think in that moment it was the narrator leaving those not only as a gift from his father, but as a gift from us as well

I'm starting to see thematic similarities between this "Ash's Goodbye" and "Ojamajô Doremi Naisho"
Both are minieries closing/ending chapter to a long anime generally consider for children aka. "colorful, not very significant"
But then the final "season" miniseries tackles tough realistic themes like death or parents' divorce (OD Naisho also lifted themes like granparent's memory loss illness on the spotlight)
It's like the creators could finally bring up serious themes in the closing miniseries, which they couldn't do while the show ran hundreds of episodes in TV Saturday morning slot.
(And before some wise-butt pops up to say that "Naisho" isn't chronologically the last Ojamajo Doremi season, it was made last just like this 11-ep "Goodbye Ash" miniseries is the final part of an anime that ran for 25 years)
