    My good man, #2816's Mexico tour was, in my opinion, is a throwback to steam fantrips in the old days. I believe that the Mexican railfans got too excited for their own good. Take note, I think this is the first steam locomotive that ran on the Mexican mainline since the end of steam in Mexico in the 1960s.

      844 was involved in a fatal accident back in 2017. 3985 was in one on a stream tour as well (though that one was suicide).

      You are correct and they do not listen to anyone down there, I have seen the raw footage of the woman being hit among other videos. They show alot of disrespect for this old girl.

    First, the F Unit got vandalized, then, 2816 killed someone because they stood too close to the track, and they had to call in the FRICKIN MILITARY

    I'd argue it went so well that CPKC wasn't prepared for the hype it would create. It was an unfortunate learning experience on the kind of crowd control that's needed, but it shows the excitement a steam excursion can raise.

    As a Mexican myself it hurt me to see people from this country not caring about the safety around the rails, i had never in my life seen a working steam locomotive before until The Empress came to visit because there simply aren’t any here, all of them are either long gone lost to the scrapper’s torch, abandoned somewhere or preserved in museums but none of them operate so i guess it’s kinda understandable why people acted this way with 2816… but yet again, your life is worth more than a simple photo
    And probably because of this and the bad look it’s giving to us Mexican railfans 2816 might very well be the last steamer we’ll ever see in operating condition.. and that honestly sucks

    I feel immensely bad for the engine crews. I can't imagine how the engineer must feel knowing that the locomotive their driving ended a human life.

      i get what you trying to say and ya but at the same time i dont feel to bad for them every railroader knows that everything in on and about the railroad was made in blood sweet and tears leaned the hard way (like in this case) and if thay dont then thair in the wrong job.
      It is sad but at the same time your in the way of the train if you do stuff like this then no one to blame but your self the crew do not have to give the slightest shit for a death by thair loco when your just doing your job knowing that mexico anit safe as is if your running down thar you dont stop for good reason a lot of the time its you or them and you better pick you becuse thay wont

      Here in Mexico... Sadly in mexico, engineers are dealing with idiots who always put on risk their lives almost EVERY DAY. Its a common thing because the police don't do crap. They don't arrest vandals. They are easy to fool with some money. Its a mess Mexico's security system. And it has been for at least 30 years

    A big problem is a lack of culture awareness about Rail safety in Mexico. There's no equivalent of Operation Lifesaver to inform the public about the importance of being safe around trains and when you combine an uninformed mass population with a nation who has no real history of steam preservation (thus meaning very few people there have seen a steam locomotive in motion), it was an inevitable tragedy.
    I hope that the new President of Mexico uses this situation as well as the incident where the British Rail HST hit a truck at an unmarked crossing to kickstart a proper rail safety awareness program.

      Not just a Mexico problem. Despite education and warnings, people will still put themselves in harm's way and trespass on a railroad right of way. In my city, in the last month, two deaths have happened from people being on the track.

      Me as a Puerto Rican, and American railfan I know the absolute cautions of all of it. I do like trains and all, but two I do realize the dangers and the risks of why this can happen and I mean seriously people don't realize that those are big heavy strong machines that it can easily kill its victims because they won't have no time to stop the engine to prevent an accident nor the people that they're being more carelessly in that moment that they have to move out of the way which they didn't if a train is going 20 or 30 mph. I'm not trying to be rude and all but still. I also took in that same argument too like literally what are they thinking if those trains like I said are big heavy strong machines it can literally take you out if you're too dangerously close to the tracks like literally. Me that I have all the knowledge about all of this in the railroad, i should really absolutely know because seriously. Like I said I'm really not trying to be this rude guy and all but, "People from Mexico WHAT THE F*** ARE YOU DOING"

    Something I want to mention is that Mexico is a completely different country from the USA and Canada and how people treat trains in Mexico is obviously going to be different. and Yes, no matter where you are and no matter how much safety you enforce there is always gonna be Darwin award recipients competing. But thats not what I am trying to stat here because what a lot of people don't realize is that things didn't start going downhill for 2816 when they entered Mexico everything started going down hill when they passed Monterrey, Mexico. Monterrey is a fairly rich and modernized city in Mexico and the environment in the city is very similar to big cities in the USA and Canada. I bring this up because if you watch videos of 2816 before it passes Monterrey everyone is controlling themselves and not getting too close but once they passed Monterrey and got out into the countryside thats when all hell broke lose. As a Mexican friend from Mexico told me "the farther south you go the more insane it gets." And we saw that with 2816, yes a lot of stereotypes of Mexicans were confirmed and probably new ones were made lol. But there was kinda a bit of mass hysteria made from this that is causing people to think every Mexican is an idiot and that is not true, yes idiots are everywhere but so are smart people. I think Mexico was a mix, yes I think there were more uneducated people than educated but they really meant no harm they just got too excited and didn't know any better, I say those who wanted to cause harm where those who vandalized the train and tried jumping on the train when it was moving. Another thing too is that the people who were climbing onto the train at that one servicing stop, those are village people who live in the country, in those villages they don't get out very much and don't really see steam locomotives and what they did yes was stupid and disrespectful to CPKC but you also have to remember that they weren't really taught how to respect private property because in those small villages everyone pretty much shares everything community wise. And just know there is nothing wrong with that, it is just how they survive.

    Seen that video, and the most striking thing is the absolute noise, the "DONG" that clearly rings out of her head getting battered by a 500-ton fucker of speed & steam pressure - you can hear that impact over the sound of both the train AND the crowd.

    If there's anything redeeming about this, it's now there's many people in Mexico clamoring to get one of their own steam locomotives restored and back on the tracks. So maybe we will see one of their 4-8-4 Niagaras on the Chepe or Transistmitico someday. There's at least 12 Mexican 4-8-4's preserved, so there's enough parts to do it.

    2816 got towed by diesels in mexico to make sure crowds don't get too chaotic again. If they get to Laredo, Texas or even cross the boarder. Maybe let the diesels uncouple and let 2816 lead to train back to canada.

    Solution. Run steam locomotives more often and educate on trains and railroad safety to beable to enjoy excursion trains and regular service trains…something is hard for some normies and more to understand this

    Can you imagine what would happen if locomotives like N&W 611, UP 4014 and/or SP 4449 went on a world tour? Incidents involving them would probably be extremely hectic and chaotic!

    I am from Mexico and the behavior of the people is totally shameful and they actually had to call armed guards (which is really the national guard), the vast majority of these incidents occurring in the north of the country, I reiterate that it is super embarrassing for me As a Mexican, seeing people behave like apes, the empress generated a lot of emotion since steam trains stopped being seen since 1960.

    I've seen railroads call in extra security for steam excursions before. For example, when SP 4449 made her epic trip to Michigan in 2009, I was at the East Lansing station stop for it. CN had a couple of their railway police officers--in uniform--there to manage the crowds and keep people off the right-of-way. Nothing wrong with that, they rarely host steam, they'd asked Doyle McCormick to get her off their road as quickly as they could, so she was hauling ass through much of the area, and she's such a flashy celebrity that they knew there'd be big crowds.
    I've never seen them have to call in the fucking *ARMY* to control the crowds before...

    Makes me feel bad for all of the locals and railfans who live in Mexico who viewed 2816 safely and with respect towards the crew and equipment, people just had to ruin the experience for them. However, one thing that makes me royally frustrated is the fact that Railroad articles had to cover this subject while CPKC barely mentioned it. I feel CPKC should be more transparent on the subject, no matter how bad it is in order to promote railroad safety.

    In the UK our railways are fenced off and I'm always slightly surprised that other countries don't do this. Sure we have trespassing incidents but not things like this! I get that it would probably be a lot to maintain, and very expensive considering how much track these railway companies own, but surely some methods of protection/deterrence need to be found. Absolutely horrible that a tragedy occurred. The enthusiasm's great, but please be responsible.

    We all felt awful about those tragedies involved, as a mexican railfan we all have to pay the broken dishes for a few careless ones, cant blame the decision about bringin the empress to mexico, at the end, it could happened in any country but let me tell you, this could be the last event for us in mexico saddly😢

    and the truth is that it was a very bad idea since here in Mexico there is not much railway culture so to speak. Literally, shootings were happening and they found bodies somewhere when the Empress was in CDMX and the railway infrastructure in Mexico is not the best that can be expected except in the south where I live. since there is a project called Tren Maya that took 4 years to build but already has 8 active lines The result of the elections is practically new, they are going to implement 8 new railway lines to the country but that may take another 4 years.

    While the time spent in Mexico had its challenges I’d argue that there is a lot of good that came from that portion of the trip. The whole point of the trip was to celebrate the merger and I would argue that they managed that with great success!

    For what it's worth: I went to see UP 4014, many Americans were acting like idiots and the police had to show up for crowd control, there, too. People have mentioned Flying Scotsman as well, where the old bill (British Transport Police) had to show up to chase rabid spotters off platforms at King's Cross and out of restricted areas.
    So I think your judgement on this may be a bit harsh. I'd really kind of put some blame on CPKC for poor planning, I mean, they knew no steam locomotive had shown up on those tracks for a couple of generations.

    the footage is brutal, so horribly sad. I think over-excitement and inexperience is the main cause of all this, and that just makes it even sadder. I don't know how you'd go about mass safety education for something as uncommon as this (operation lifesaver equivalent as someone mentioned?) but I hope it somehow happens. Personally, I hope 2816 DOES return to Mexico someday and it can be a fun and safe time for all. Here's hoping.

      Talk to the president/CEO of CPKC. From what I gathered from a person in the comments of the another video on 2816's incident, the only reason the tour to mexico is happening is because the CEO basically to be there personally instead of going their on his own time.

    Even though it was her own fault, I feel bad about the woman who died. She wasn't doing it to be a bampot. She was just an enthusiast who enthused in the wrong way.
    And it does provoke uncomfortable memories of the behaviour when Flying Scotsman was out on Network Rail metals. As far as I'm aware no-one died and we didn't need to get the army out, but she did have to run at little more than walking pace sometimes, which of course also creates delays for service trains. And in our case the tracks are almost always fenced in, you can't just wander onto them like you can in so much of North America.
    The result of all of that is that timings are kept quiet (frustrates responsible railfans), and there remains a very real fear that Network Rail might simply ban steam tours completely.

    let me just say that a lot of what many American railfans are saying about this tour mostly based on a total lack of knowledge of the situation in Mexico. Let me be clear, I do not justify how reckless the people acted, however the arrival of this specific train did caused a lot of buzz, may be much more than CPKC was expecting. First of all, this was the first time that a mainline steam engine operated in Mexican territory since the late 1960s, for the large majority of Mexicans (born after 1970) this was important because most people have never seen an steam locomotive in operation, (except on movies). Also you must take into consideration that regular passenger train services ended nation wide around 1998 (except from the cooper canyon train), anyone born after 1998 has never seen a passenger train. I was told that 3000 people lined up to see this locomotive while it was on display in Mexico city. By not means this can justify how some people acted. It is sad to see a lot of racist talk online about the people in Mexico and implying that nothing like that ever has happened in the US, when in fact, it has happened sporadically and most old timers who had the chance of riding the big mainline railfan trips can relate to what when down in Mexico. Most young American railfans don't know that Mexico was a railroad nation. We had a similar network like in the United States and operated the same type of equipment. It was very common to see passenger trains almost everywhere, and railroad transportation was part of our identity. However due to government ineptitude our railway network shrank dramatically between the years 1998 and 2000. literally all passenger routes and trains cased operations. Any railway line that did not had enough freight traffic was truncated and in most cases the tracks were lifted. I remember the fate of the branch line that used to serve the town I was born there. Regular passenger service end around 1994 and by 2000 all 45 miles of track were lifted. Today, anyone who was born after 1990 in that region never was this train and many do not even know a railroad ever serve their community. I really hope that CPKC does this tour again.

Here in the US it gets pretty rare to see freight cars not vandalized. Dumb people doing dumb things are everywhere which is something simple yet not so simple to comprehend as there are specific people that can't understand this and instead take advantage of it to go for stereotypes and bash Mexico as a whole which is very disrespectful, childish and ignorant. They probably only hear about Mexico from everyone else's point of view but an actual Mexican. I too hope CPKC does the tour down to Mexico again as well!!!

      There are no operating steam locomotives in Mexico. The are a number of them on display at different locations and museum. but none of them are in operating condition

    Once upon a time, the US railroads HATED having to interchange cars with the Mexican railroads. Their cars would literally disappear and get lost down in Mexico for months. Never mind them and the locomotives getting vandalized. And someone thought it’d be a good idea to send a steam engine down there?!! Lesson learned……I hope. If it makes it back to the states in one piece instead of it sitting on concrete blocks with the wheels stolen off it, after it hit someone, I’ll be impressed.

    It clearly shows that Mexicans have a different level of risk acceptance, you see it in other places like the fireworks festivals and markets as well But turning your back to a speeding train when standing in the right of way?
    Same scenes happened in Europe where rally races in Spain and Portugal in the 1980s were notorious for the risk people took to see the cars and their heros, the crowd splitting up just in front of cars approaching with over 100mph like the sea did split open for Moses to get trough. Many a spectator killed at these events until the FIA started boycotting these events until they took measures to keep spectators off the course.

    Mexico is basically what it is today because of never ending corruption and a gov that cares very little for anyone in its nation, the people have a lot of pride, but they have no respect for a lot of shit. But that doesn’t mean they have none at all. It’s a odd thing because that’s a big thing for them too is respect. They probably all did get super hyped off the rest of the people there, likely a lot of beer was involved, and a sad thing happened. It’s the woman’s fault period.

    I rode behind 2816 from Milwaukee's Amtrak station to Chicago's Union Station in 2007. It was a nice day with beautiful weather, not many people on the train (employees and guests only), lunch was provided, and we took the UP-freight line down to Bensenville and then east to Union Station.

    What was supposed to be a grand historic occasion sadly ended up being ruined. I hope this doesn't cause CPKC to not run 2816 again. It'd be a shame if she was left inside a shed for a long time again. They could still run her in Canada and the US. I've been wondering if the deal between CPKC and CSX on an Alabama connection goes through if they would run 2816 to Jacksonville FL via the CSX bowline from Montgomery Al to celebrate. Yes, before you ask, that's my home line, hence my channel name. My line, to date, hasn't had a steam locomotive run on it since SP Daylight 4449 came through on her Amtrak excursion to get home after the AFT concluded, and I've longed for steam to come through. Speaking of 4449, I'm glad her auxiliary tender came back unscathed.

      Even though I’m Hispanic, I have never seen how life is down there, but by how our parents talk when complaining about us youngsters (they could’ve used birth control in the first place). It sounds like the economy in Latin America is so fucked up that they can’t afford school supplies. If they can’t afford school supplies, then how can they afford running a steam engine? People that are slightly below middle class here in the US are like millionaires down south. And on top of the fact that government officials and politicians are CORRUPT as fuck down there bribe their way up the ranks, they over tax people, the cartels are always making people’s lives even more miserable by threatening to kill family members or steal or vandalise their property or whatever business they have. That’s why most people down there will move heaven and earth to move up here to the US, because up here we have more opportunities than down there. Why do you think that could be a big reason for why people were kind of like that around 2816?

    People often think that the width of the train tracks is the width of the train and they think that as long as they aren’t over the rails they won’t get hit. In reality trains are often wider than the ties that the rails are placed on and can overhang the rails by as much as 3 feet or more. This was seen during the UP 4014 big boy inaugural excursion back in 2019 when track workers had to rocks further from the tracks because the big boys front cylinders couldn’t pass by safely without possibly damaging them. I think the rocks where placed 5 feet away from the tracks but that still wasn’t enough for big boy to pass through. There’s a reason why the rule of stay 25 feet away from the tracks is used. I remember when I stood 25 feet away from a passing freight train and I felt the ground shaking beneath my feet. Even though I was following the rule it still felt too close.

    There are many reasons about this that I agree with you, Is a lot of enthusiasm, hype and excitement with 2816 that CP people can't figure out how big could this be, the more southern the 2816 went the more people surrounding the tracks, the media played a very important role in this ocasion and without any idea, they spread the topic so well, and so massive that people make It overwhelming. I hope to see the Empress coming again to México with all the knowledge and experience that this trip gave to the crew on this greatfull experience, not all was disaster ane chaos, also the people let know to the CP how many the 2816 was Loved and welcomed.

    One of the F-Units as well as a couple of the passenger cars did infact get vandalized and tagged with graffiti, it got bad enough that when they stopped running for the day, 2816's head light and other "jewelry" had wood crates placed over them. Say what you will, but I personally hope CP never brings 2816 into Mexico ever again. Their laws regarding railroad safety in Mexico are pretty much non existent as compared to here in the states and even in Canada. Somehow I knew before hand that there would be issues when they got to Mexico, and sure nuf, there were... Hopefully CP learned a lesson from this.

    - The Empress is also known as the Canadian Pacific 2816.
    - It is a class "H1b" 4-6-4 Hudson-type steam locomotive.
    - The Empress was built by the Montreal Locomotive Works.
    - The Empress pulled passenger trains for 30 years through the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
    - The locomotive is now almost 100 years old.
    - The Empress is a frequent visitor to the Crown of the Continent.
    - The Empress is now running on the Final Spike Steam Train between Calgary and Mexico City.
    So it went all the way from
    Calgary, Canada to Mexico City
    And back.

    I live in Lethbridge, Alberta. and from time to time saw and heard 2816 come through town and the only time I went to out see it was about fifteen years ago when they had her here for a few days doing an IMAX movie on the "Lethbridge Viaduct" the highest and longest bridge of the type in the world. Even then there were only a few people out as you can tell by the videos posted on RUclips about it.

    Actually they do have guards in South Korea the rail road system is different over there do to them crossing on busy roads without railroad arms

    We use to haul for Formula 1 racing back early 90s from the race in Montreal Canada Down to Mexico City Mexico and from LAX to Phoenix,AZ. Car and all the pit equipment, parts and few trailers of tires for them. 4 days south of the border. Any way we would convoy from TX board down and back with Federally Police escort. Nothing like feeling secure rolling through a small town with federally police with automatic weapons leaning on the hood of their car watching use go by.

    God the footage of the crowds reminds me of when 4014 first returned to service in 2019. Heck I experienced the crowds firsthand two years later when she came to my neck of the woods in St. Louis. As she left Washington, Missouri two cars got into a wreck as they raced to catch her out of the city limits. Needless to say stay safe when around Railroad Equipment kids.

    Only thing I can figure is Canada and US there's a lawyer,judge and jury willing to sue the railroad on behalf of the next of kin of someone thzt Darwin Awards themselves on railroad property. Go back and look at excursion trips and events such as these from the 60s 70s and into the 80s but not as much and you'll see people shooting film and pictures from freight cars on sidings and signals masts and overheads. It's most likely the family goès to a lawyer saying hey our family member got themselves bounced off the cylinder chest of a speeding steam engine taking a selfie in the gauge and we'd like to sue a lawyer is going to laugh them out of their office explaining they'd be disbarred bringing that before a judge.
