His version of the Phantom is honestly my favorite. I LIKE the fact that it doesn't sound super operatic. It makes his songs more seductive and hypnotizing. Like, Music of the Night sounds so much more tender and sensual the way he sings it. Constantly doing an opera voice in some of these songs sort of takes away from that. I also love how you can sort of hear a kind of "hissing" in his some parts of his songs. Don't get me wrong, I love the other Phantoms as well, but Gerard's is my favorite.
^ This is so true for me as well. You are 100% correct. His voice works very well in my opinion and it does deliver a more sensual quality I believe as well. Nothing wrong with the beautiful operatic notes the Broadway Phantoms hit, but Gerard's voice was incredibly seductive. I always thought that his performance was better than he gets credit for. Not just the singing, but his character work.
I 100% agree with both of your opinions. I love his version so much because of the calming and the seductiveness in it that most people don’t really pick up when OPERA singers are singing it, which is the whole point of the song (is too feel that way for it). I always feel like I’m levitating off the ground when I hear him sing. 😫🙏🏼🕯️🥀
He said he had 6 singing lessons before his interview! He used to be in a "rock type band", before or after he trained to be a lawyer...but didn't complete the lawyer thing I believe...It wasn't for him. I actually went from Australia to LA for a midnight redux screening of Phantom...then went to Paisley, his hometown (just outside of Glasgow, Scotland), and stood at the frozen pea freezer for hours waiting for him to come in and buy peas for his Mum. Just a notion I had...anyways after these hours passed, the manager of the supermarket in Paisley, approached me, asking what was I doing? I told him I was waiting for Gerry Butler and he said..."You just missed him by a day...he just took his Mum to the film awards in USA"...then he grabbed a pack of frozen peas, put them up to near his face and posed with a big grin and said "Will this do?" So I took his pic and we both laughed at my absurd hunch. Too funny!
@@Marylmac This is such a great story, you made me laugh! Sorry, that you missed seeing Gerry, that would have been phenomenal if you did! Even though I too love Gerard Butler, my thing is going to England and running into Johnny Depp and having a conversation with him. Lol.❤
I think Gerard understood the Phantom the best and obviously sexed up the role a bit, making it more passionate and, for me, more believable. He may not have the same operatic voice or vibrato the other phantoms had but I hardly notice because he still hits the notes and his voice is still pleasant. And most importantly because he plays the character so convincingly. Best phantom in my opinion.
i totally agree. i think ramin made a better phantom BUT the movie was my first exposure to the phantom of the opera, and i still think gerard's acting was terrific. maybe he's not the best singer technically but his voice has a unique tone and a vast range of emotion. i think he really delivered. shame that not a lot of people appreciate this.
With all the respect, I disagree. Gerard is a decent Phantom, his acting is good and he does seem to understand the character, but he's far from being the best Phantom or one of the best. First, his singing is not very good. It's not bad, I personally enjoy his rock-opera take on the songs, but it still isn't very good and the singing part is an important part, this is a musical after all. Second; he's not the first actor to capture the Phantom's love for Christine and he's not even the best one at doing it. Ramin Karimloo not only sings beautifully but also shows his wicked side as well as his hopeless and desperate love for Christine, Hugh Panaro does as well a great job, Michael Crawford also does it and many more.
I just didn't feel the seduction from Ramin though. I feel like it's an important factor. It worked so well with Gerard, I had this strange like... love-hate relationship with him. I was attracted to and repulsed by him. I experienced a vicarious Stockholm Syndrome type of effect almost. I feel like Gerard had that down whereas other Phantoms did not as much. I know the singing is an important factor, but so is the story. It may be a musical, but without the back story, it's just music. So I am willing to accept his less operatic voice. It's not hard on the ears and other people in cast make up for any deficiency in my opinion. We can agree to disagree though! :)
That's exactly how I feel, Paige. I feel like he's the total complete package. The pauses he makes and the way he draws out some words.. it's PASSIONATE. You can hear so much emotion in his voice.
I grew up with Gerard as the Phantom, so to me this is what I always picture the Phantom's voice to sound like.I do wholeheartedly respect all broadway, but for me, I prefer the more cinematic sounding vocals that the movie has because they sound more raw and real to me; it's what I grew up with, so I will always love it. (just my opinion I know many people will disagree)
+blondBEXTER I was really young when this came out and i didn't even know about the broadway show until i was older and though i love both, i grew up on the 2004 movie so i prefer it :)
Hello It’s me Gerard Butler, I decided to go on a private account so I can be able to chat with my fans worldwide and thank them for their support and appreciation.
@@gerardbutler736 Hey Gerard Butler would you mind giving me some tips on how I can play the Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera and how I should do the best performance when singing all the songs not only from the musical but also the film as well and teach me a thing or two about the Phantom and how I could play that character as well as mastering the look of the costume as well as I've got an actual Phantom Mask and I'm looking to model the look of my Phantom of the Opera costume after your version like from the 2004 film itself and would you show me what the costume looks like and how I can make it look like that one
i've heard many other phantom's but i still like his voice the best for the role. it sounds like he's on the verge of tears when he sings and that to me,, makes the character work. Ramin's is more showman-ish and Norm's is powerful, but Gerard's is full of pain(but still in tune)
Norm as in Norm Lewis? I haven't heard his version of the Phantom yet but I've heard great things and I loved him as Javert in Les Miserable. I did enjoy Gerard's performance but to me, Crawford will only ever be THE PHANTOM!

He looks so focused and a bit terrified...his voice is not the perfect one but it is so seducing, charming and appealing...particularly in this song + Wandering child. I cannot get it out of my head...
I think it was a mistake to cut his singing of “No One Would LIsten” from the movie because it shows yet another side of The Phantom’s personality. It reveals his tender, lonely soul, and make me cry tears of sadness for him. Lots of people say that he’s creepy, but this song shows that he’s really just suffering from his isolation, unrequited love, and rejection.

I've always found his performance in this role breath taking. This version is cinematic, not a stage play, so the role needs a whole different set of performance tools. The movie had its flaws, but Gerard Butler's performance was definitely not one of them! No one could have done it better!
The best Phantom ever! If I was Christine I would have chosen him. He made him seem lovable, caring, sympathetic, not the least deranged just a poor soul who would be rejected by society. Best looking Phantom like WOW.
Great job Gerard! I love how actors and actresses are willing to go out of their comfort zone and try new things. They are truly courageous. I love this movie!
My absolute favorite version of The Phantom of The Opera! Between Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum 😊 ...the entire cast tied in well. It was done so breath takingly beautiful. My daughter and I watch it often 💗
I just feel he is the best phantom. I know people have so many different opinions on who is the best but I just feel he shows how passionate and true Christine and his love was. I also did grow up watching this and him as the phantom so this is how I picture the phantom to be and sound like. But this is my opinion and I know many people won’t agree.
For all those saying Gerard Butler goes off pitch and messes up slightly... uh where? Every time I listen to him, I think his voice is absolutely amazing
What I came to understand in watching the film "Phantom of the Opera" vs the stage productions is that it's an entirely different venue. I think choosing Gerard Butler was overall a very good choice. Yes, you can criticize his vocals -- they are not pitch-on perfect, but for what he lacks in singing talent he makes up for with his acting ability. Richard Burton was, after all, cast to play Arthur in "Camelot," and Richard Harris was cast in the film. Neither were virtuoso-type singers but brought a gravatas to the stage and screen. I also personally find Gerard's renditions to be really heartfelt -- something I do not detect in the stage performers. There's a vast difference between an excellent singer and an actor who has singing abilities. If you are making a movie, with lots of close-up shots, you want someone who can emote and seem close to breaking down in tears at any unexpected moment. You also want someone who is basically handsome despite having to wear a mask over a portion of his face. That's not an easy role to cast. The movie is not a musical stage production, it's not a documentary. It's a film interpretation, and for this reason, the casting HAD to take into consideration not just vocal virtuosity but acting talent. You can listen to Andrea Bocelli sing "The Music of the Night" right here on RUclips, and you cannot equivocate the power of his vocals. At the same time one must realize that Bocelli is JUST singing. He's not even attempting to demonstrate any anguish that the Phantom might be feeling -- and why should he? He's not trying to BE the Phantom. He's merely singing a popular song. Therein lies the difference. As a casting director you have to go with the best actor ... who can also sing. And, in my opinion, I prefer Gerard's vocals over most (if not all) of the others because my ears can dismiss the pitch-perfect qualities and zero-in on the anguish that lays beneath.
Thor, you were brilliant in your considerations. And it is exactly these differences that you have put that people do not understand. Everyone who played the ghost is good at his artistic skills, but Gerard was the one who gave expression, passion, love and life to the phantom.
Gerard is just so hot when he sings. Darn it !!!he's ravishing gorgeous. Did u see him on the moors in ps I love you ??!!!❤he was prettier than Hillary swank and when he kissed her I died of jealousy. His gravely voice is devastatingly manly !!!
Ok ues, there are better singers who played the Phantom, but Gerrard is the one who made me feel the most. By far. He so perfectly captured the phantoms sadness, loneliness, and beauty. He and christine had such chemistry, an absolutelu perfect casting choice. This phantom made me cry and left me breathless. WELL DONE!
I don't think Gerard Butler is the best Phantom but, however, he did an fantastic job and it's obvious that he worked really hard. His rock-opera take on the songs have - without doubt - an certain sensuality that is hard to resist and are yet heartfelt and compassionate.
Knowing Gerard's film history makes me respect his vocal ability more than a trained singer. He has an amazing talent for vocals despite not beinf classically trained. He is as fine a spartan spray tanned warrior as he is an opera singer. I know I could get a 16-pack abs if I worked out alot, but I could never sing like that, and thats why this is amazing
Who cares whether his voice is the best trained or not. This man gets into the soul of the phantom and brings the character to life. In my opinion, the other phantoms are good but Gerard Butler is the best
I am watching the movie now and this was the first movie I had ever seen Gerard Butler and I thought he was very talented. His voice is handsome as is he
He just blew me away!! I couldn't believe it was Gerard Butler singing!! He did an excellent rendition of all the songs from "The Phantom of the Opera". I think better than all the others that were cast for the Broadway Show, etc..
He mimics the real phantom in the story who taught himself to sing

" He is not a trained singer" Perhaps that is why he is my favorite. He puts so much more into it than the "stars".
Absolutely! I was never impressed with Michael Crawford.
You mean to tell me he is not a trained singer? That’s just pure and raw talent right there.
He said he had 6 singing lessons before his interview! Thanks! What a great voice Gerry has!! So good to hear him sing!
He is the best Phantom I have heard. ^_~ And Emmy was the best Christine I've heard. ^_~
WELL DONE!
I love hearing him sing. he is so emotional. P.S. I love you was the first time I heard him sing. so talented.
Genuinely from his heart, great tone and voice.🍀
Hello my beautiful phone for how long have you been watching my movies 🌹💐
Voice of an angel
Multi talented. I enjoyed it a great deal.
I don't think Gerard Butler is the best Phantom but, however, he did an fantastic job and it's obvious that he worked really hard. His rock-opera take on the songs have - without doubt - an certain sensuality that is hard to resist and are yet heartfelt and compassionate.
Agreed so much
I think you meant phantastic :)
Sorry, I didn't hear any "rock" in his songs.
Wow didn't know he was such a brilliantly talented singer!
People are crazy his voice is beautiful.
Phantom of the Opera is now on Netflix.
Hooray!!! I honestly have the dvd but I can never get enough of that sexy, bad boy, Scott💕
This made me love him
OMG, his singing makes me melt -- the man has talent all across the board. Loved him in Phantom, as well as P.S. I Love You.
Damn I love his natural and soft voice...
sometimes those unsettable voice seems to be more attract than original baritone, vocal music or something
Goosebumps everywhere!!!!!!
Hello my lovely and beautiful for how long are people watching my movies
Knowing Gerard's film history makes me respect his vocal ability more than a trained singer. He has an amazing talent for vocals despite not beinf classically trained. He is as fine a spartan spray tanned warrior as he is an opera singer. I know I could get a 16-pack abs if I worked out alot, but I could never sing like that, and thats why this is amazing
Fell in love with GB in this movie - very passionate performance of the phantom. His voice is beautiful to me.
Gerard Butler singing with a beard makes me life in so many ways
I think my heart literally stopped there for a second..
Oh my gosh! His voice is lovely !
Hello my beautiful son for how long have you been watching my movies 💋😘
Many years later still love this ✌ 2018™
Who cares whether his voice is the best trained or not. This man gets into the soul of the phantom and brings the character to life. In my opinion, the other phantoms are good but Gerard Butler is the best
Good voice love to sing with him 🌹
Can there be a sexier man in this world ?no
Only that and sounds just simply Amazing I can't hardly wait to see him in the theater again !
Amazing voice. Chills 😍
Hello my lovely and beautiful for how long are people watching my movies
Awesome! Who would have thought Mr. One Two could sing like this? It's from the soul. Bravo!
I am watching the movie now and this was the first movie I had ever seen Gerard Butler and I thought he was very talented. His voice is handsome as is he
his voice e is amazing! i love the romantic coarse tone he has its so genuine and beautiful
I thought Gerard did great! He will always be my favorite phantom. I can feel the emotions coming from him.
Beautiful ❤️.
I fell in love with Gerard in Phantom!
He just blew me away!! I couldn't believe it was Gerard Butler singing!! He did an excellent rendition of all the songs from "The Phantom of the Opera". I think better than all the others that were cast for the Broadway Show, etc..
