How to: "Forward" Scratch on a Controller by a DJ Champ + Giveaway

  • The Forward scratch is the 2nd most important scratch you'll learn, because it's the scratch where you actually release and play the sample. And the beauty of this scratch is that it can work with anything. You are literally just letting go of the platter and playing the music.

    ► Script:
The difficult part of this scratch though is that you have to use the crossfader, but once you get used to the movement of the crossfader, this scratch will be your bread and butter in playing music, and in getting funky.
Before you learn the scratch it is important for you guys to first master the baby scratch. Once you do that, it’ll be time to adjust your computer settings so you can properly cut the sound. In this video, I take you through it.
All DJ softwares are essentially the same, so how I go about in adjusting the settings will be same in any other software.
    Steps to Forward Scratch:
    1. Know where the sample is and always use the beginning of it
    2. Release the platter and play the sample
    3. Put your hand back on the platter to stop playing the sample
    4. ***Use the crossfader and bring it to the off section (Depends where you scratch. If your right hand is on the platter, the off section should be on the left side. If your left hand is on the platter the off section should be on your right side)
    5. Pull back the platter to adjust the sample back to the beginning
    6. Adjust the crossfader back into the on position.
Since you guys now know the baby scratch, combining that scratch with this forward scratch will give you unlimited possibilities and scratch patterns and combinations you guys can do in your scratch sessions. Scratching is about timing, and there is no better test of timing and funkiness when you release and play the sample in a specific beat or rhythm.
In all honesty, if you want to sound good in scratching, all you really need is to get good with the baby scratch and the forward scratch. It's better to be a master of one, than to be mediocre in everything. So if you're serious about scratching, stick to these two scratches for a year, and you guys will sound as good and as funky as long time veterans.
It's important to not rush learning this scratch. Remember, the key to sounding good is sounding clean. So take it slow, and get used to the movements of pulling back your platter and adjusting the crossfader accordingly.
This is a fun scratch to learn, and is the most combo-able with all the other scratches. Good luck and remember to have fun! :)

Hey Carlo! Great tutorial as always. I had a question about forward scratching on a controller. Do you have to look at Rekordbox/Serato and the waveform to know when to stop the sample and how much to pull back? Is it something you can do by ear?
I’ve got the DDJ400 so following turntablists from 90s is a little tough with this scratch. Any help would be awesome!!! Thanks!
