I couldn't do this SCRATCH for 22 years until THIS TIP

- So as I mentioned in previous videos, I could not do open fader scratches with normal crossfader mode for 22 years. Then after watching some 2-click flare tutorials online (links below), something stood out to me that my approach was all wrong. Then in a matter of a few days, it just clicked...pun intended! In this tutorial, I break down exactly what I did to quickly learn how to do basic flare scratch techniques!

Congrats bro!
Thanks Carlo!
Oh well hi Carlo didn’t expect to see you here
Wow! you watch him!
True Master is Here!
This is ace, was just about to comment about you too as well as DJAngelo. Since I was just sitting here recalling how dope this video is. Huge respect to you, and massive thanks for your generous contributions & guidance for so many.
" LOL " It took me 4ever to get my orbits down!!! " YEARS " Then one day it just clicked! ! ! I Felt like an idiot once i got the scratch down!!!(LOL) The amazing thing about being a DJ is it's 2021 and were still happy to learn a new technique or pattern! Shout outs to you " Pri yon Joni " and all the " REAL DJ"S " out there. . . I don't usually leave comment's but your platform is a positive 4 the " CULTURE " and I"m 20plus yrs in the game and still love walking past my turntables everyday!!! Hip-Hop keeps us young!!! (LOL) And your the definition of what this generation DJ-Wise needs 2 see. . . .
That was very very helpful. I took 20 years off from DJing to raise my children and now it's time to learn it's evolution; especially in the art of scratching.
One of the biggest tips I learned was to try to keep your fader motion technique the same regardless of the scratch. It helped me understand combos a lot better
this is the best flare/orbit video i've seen so far. great job!
Thank you! I started turntables at 11 years old and self taught. I stopped after 20 years and then discovered that I was trying to recreate this scratch the closed fader way! Like you, I was doing it wrong for decades much to the detriment of my wrist and frustrated brain - trying to push my hands beyond physics. 😂
damn that little trick helped me get the timing right almost immediately. thanks for sharing.
Crazy how it works!
I actually learned how to scratch watching DJ Angelo's tutorials, you're already great as you are now so I'm not surprised you got it figured out but its always nice to see experienced DJ's to still try something constantly. Great explanation.
I never understood tutorials until this one. You are a life saver thanks so much.
Glad I was able to help
love that you explain the thought process rather than just the technique, recon this will help
Hopefully I can finally get this down with your technique because open fader scratches are the gate way to the advance scratches
This video is some golden advice for me. A million thanks!
Brother that was awesome thank you for sharing your Knowledge
Interesting enough I discovered how to 2 click flare earlier this week for over roughly the same amount of years. Though to be fair I haven't touched my decks for over 12 years now. Only recently did I fix both tables to teach my younger cousin how to scratch.
Thank you for sharing what you've learned as I'm sure there are others who have hit and will hit that wall on the scratch journey.
Very good explain. I am scratching for 30 years. since a short time I use pioneer cdj`s 1000mk3. And it``s amazing! Thank you for this video!
This is so awesome and you’re the one that really helped me make it through this👌🏽
Glad I was able to help!
Pure gold, thank you
Dude... you and I had the identical scratch resume. Great with closed fader, training wheels for open fader. My hand motion on my 2 click was clunky as hell. This Is a great tutorial, thanks for sharing!
Same started scratching in 99 been a mind fuck for so long other djs don’t explain this well thanx gonna try Tommorow understand now 🥳
Hey man excellent video! Wow I really needed to hear this. Almost an identical story here, I've always been very strong and confident with closed fader scratches and I have had the similar hang ups.
I've gotten a lot better in the past few years forcing myself to do open fader drills, but this explanation was excellent for me personally. It's so weird how you can fundamentally understand the mechanics of a scratch but it really takes an ah-ha moment to find the right focus and muscle memory to make the training efficient for you personally.
Your cuts are incredibly clean for someone who recently learned this. I'm jealous of your chirp orbit combo and I'd love to see more videos of how you approach thinking about your combos. I'm gonna be practicing cleaning up my two clicks using this. Thanks for sharing this.
This is so brilliant this, brother let me tell you .. Man do we appreciate such people as YourSelf and guys like DjAngelo and Carlo Atendido. Always breaking it down in the best ways and super inspiring to so many out here. Strikes me as kinda funny too, how it's like we revolve in circles, round and round, every now and then hitting the spirals, that inspiration. Ya'll be sharing, saving & making peoples days with this. The content to get us more than content. Thank you
I can’t wait to get home and try this!
I’m stuck in the same boat !!!!! I hope this video helps !!! Dj life !
Thankyou for the lesson
Awesome tutorial! Explaining the hand movement and motion really helped me to understand! Taught this old dog a new trick 😅
You broke it down really well. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
you are just an amazing teacher it makes perfect sense to me and i cant scratch lol
I now understand your love for small-on-the-go decks, because either you look small, or the equipment looks impressively big ;-)>
It's not the size, but the motion in the ocean :D
wow, good explanation, i didnt realize that what you discovered is exactly the same way i learned how to 2/3 click flare as well. instead of trying to as you put it “roll” your clicks, you basically are doing fast transforms, to 2 click orbit is just a double transform forward and backwards pacing your record hand with your fader hand and not some kind of special double clicker trying to click as fast as possible while catching up with your record hand. 👍 nice explanation.
Fam this the best tutorial I’ve seen
I'm the creator of the Jetfuel Transformer scratch button and I've had the exact same issue with open fader scratches for ever as well. I'd love to compare issues Thanks for the video dude! DJ Jetfuel
Great explanation. And thanks for further explanation on this.
I'm dealing with a "heavy dumb" so I haven't been able to properly built up speed. But I don't mind at the moment as that's not what I'm aiming for.
Just keep practicing, you will get it!
Dude your really good at explaining these. I'm a dummy and you help a lot.
Thank you!
Nice job.
Very easy to understand
By far the best 2-click flare I've seen. Been trying to do this for YEARS! Thank you SO much. Would love to see a breakdown of those combos. Gonna be practicing these 2-clicks tonight. Thanks again 🙏🏼
Thanks for the technical dissection. i appreciate you...and i just subscribed. 2 thumbs up
I can relate! But I still have trouble with open fader scratches because my thumb tries to close fader as a fucking spring! Still fighting with it! And I thought I'm the only one with this problem! Thank you very much!
@Priyonjoni Thank you so much for this video you've just helped me unlock doing this scratch for myself!! Wow I also mastered the transformer as my main go to scratch but never did any open fader scratches only for like 10-15 years only in 2022 did I learn the chirp and I love that scratch now so after watching this it all made sense and now the 2 click flare is flowing so thank you man your videos are very clear and precise and explained so well I appreciate it! thanks for sharing!
I have the same problem. Im a learner DJ and I will try your tip
Thank you so much professor🙏🏿👍🏿
Thanks so much, one of the best stratch videos. And thanks so much for the links for the sound and beat. May GOD bless you and your family.
Really appreciate this! Much like your video on the Joe Cooley, this alternate way of thinking about it will likely help unlock some new skills for me- I could definitely not *approach* the Joe Cooley before your breakdown of it as pattern vs. combo, but changing the first move from a tear to a scribble *really* helped me!
Glad I was able to help!
This is so great chief the explanation is explicit... Am new to scratching and am following your videos Bro .. very helpful
Am using Ddj SR
Bro i enjoy your clean scratch 👍👍👍👍
Great video! Thanks for the fresh perspective!!!
Thanks bro! Killer set up
Great information, Thank you very much!!
This is very interesting
Perfect!
Thanks for always keep it real ,I’ve learned a lot from you keep going brothers
This is how I had to break it down for myself, too... I would love to see you breakdown boomerangs in a similar fashion 👍🏾👍🏾
For sure! I still need to improve my boomerangs, I get these ghost notes 🤣. It sounds cool but it sounds more like a swing flare.
Thank you!!!!
22 years, I think we are the same age, hopefully I can learn that tip quickly just like you
Really enjoying the scratch tutorials, I used to be able to do some kind of basic stuff on vinyl and now that I switched to midi/standalone I've had to go back and pretty much just start over. Five years of not spinning at all, plus jog wheels being half the size of most records and lacking the tension and feed back of turntables throws me off. It does force me to go back and unlearn bad habits though.
I hear ya. It needs a little bit of adapting time when you're switching. I actually have some tips on that. Check out this video ruclips.net/video/xrjsk2np-9Y/видео.html
Definitely HELPS! Thank you.
Thanks a lot 👍👍👍👍👍,💪💪💪💪
Great breakdown bro
Awesome video bro thanks !
Once I get range of motion on my hands, I'll have to try these techniques. Thank you PJ.
Can’t wait to see it, Alex!
Wowzers! 😲
Great video
It's funny you post this video, I have the opposite problem with doing closed fader, but I kind of think simular to you with the chirp motions....
A 1 click flare is like a full chirp movement on the fader, but 1/2 the record movement... (you gotta start slow and get the motion) - then after that a 2 click is like a flare with a stab or 1 click transform in between the "chirp" motions of the 1 click flare... You should know your 1 click before your 2 click, cos its funky!
I know! I need to practice it more
@@priyonjoni I love it that you won dj competitions using your turntable skills - (I am a minnow compared to you) , yet you not got the 1 click, in some ways this is how it should be I guess, I think you have really and its just practice like all of this...
Same. Almost 30 years and I quit trying in like 96’. Recently decided to master it. Yet to get there.
Dope!
Completely relate to you!
Thank u sir
Thanks my masterr 🙏
congrats ... hahaha ... i feel you. i started scratching again two years ago and from there on i suddenly got down chirbs and flares like perfectly in a couple of combo variatians. it just clicked like from one day to another.
i am playing electronic music, digging for mostly timeless and overlooked b-sides but lost touch with hiphop a long time ago but scratching is still one of my favourite things to do
EDIT: BRUH! I just realised i dissed you on fbook on another video. I am sorry! You're dedicated to the artform. I just subbed your channel. Love & Respect from Vienna!
Thanks for the knowledge. Trying to catch on with my Pioneer XDJ, and its a bit harder on my controller unlike using my 1200s.
Hell yeah man!! I definitely liked this video I want to scratch you let the beat drop. Those type of combo scratches are dope, can you make videos on how to do small combos of scratches that sound good together? (like multiple tutorials of was that go from amatur, beginner, advanced, Pro, and then to you expertise. Lol
this is classic
U r a master bro
Impressive looks so easy but in reality be hard to grasp
am 15 years inn just got the chirp my old 1210s lack of samples and good set needls
Scratching is definitely an artform.
Maaan im trying to adjust from closed fader to open fader is a big adjustment, breaking years of conditoning is hard sheeesh
That’s the thing. You don’t have the break any habits. If you can chirp and transform, you can do an orbit.
@djaceproductions you’ll get them after someone practice. Check out DJ Angelos tutorials here on RUclips 🤙🏻
Nice dude!
Wow 4 CDJ3000's That is a pretty penny, or several pennies. Still they are awesome units!
It is also important to know the movemrnt of the hand, not just the fingers, cause it would be impossible to be fast enough with just clicking
I switched to Hamster and I'm beginning to get it.
Sir , could you show the 2 Click flare? Best wishes
Determination was your motivation.
Very true!
Nice video, just the part where someone applied ten Luts, one on top of each other in post got me.
I spot butter rugs in the back corner
great video, thank you, BTW what is the name of that track you playing rally like it, thanks
-What camera are you using for over-head?
-Do you put your camera on the ceiling? Or are you using some kind of stand or grip?
Hi, I'm Claudio from Italy, congratulations for your videos which are always very clear and inspiring, I wanted to ask you if you tried scratching on the pioneer flx10 and if you were happy with the jogwheels? because I bought it recently and the jogwheels have a sensitivity problem for scratching, in practice I am forced to apply more pressure than is needed to prevent the jogwheels from continuing to move forward and therefore making me lose the right point of the sample which I use for scratching.
If I keep the pressure on the jogwheel too light, it doesn't stop when I would like to stop it or simply bring the sample back to the right point.
I'll start by saying that I have always used pioneer without any problems and the last controller I used was the flx6 with which I was able to scratch perfectly without any problem... do you know if there are any tips or utilities that allow you to set the pressure on the jogwheels correctly? Thanks for your attention, Claudio.
i don't know if you're teaching or showing off lol... i'm happy youve got it down but I could use another video with slower examples.
It’s very difficult to do slow because it requires tensing and vibrating your thumb and forearm
What is the brand or link for the laptop arm stand?
It’s an XMG DJ 15, it’s specifically made for DJ software
I’m a blind DJ I would love to see how you are situating your hands on the mixer
Hello. My dominant hand is essentially in a pinch-link position on the crossfader. I’m using my thump like a spring with my index finger doing the “tapping”. On the jog wheel, my hand’s home is at the 9’oclock position. That’s the left center of the wheel. And it moves between 7 and 12 o clock when scratching.
@@priyonjoni thanks so much for the feedback I really appreciate that
James Zabiela
I’m having trouble with scratching in general I haven’t been able to grasp the concept
🙌🙌🙌🙌
are u left hand or right hand dj ? can u teach us how to scratch with witch hand ? im right
and thanks for the great tip
How make that slow stopping sound? Is there a certain track that had that note? I hear scratch bank. If so where can I get it?
How do I hook my mixer to my victola. I'm lost
Its impossible for me to scratch yo 😩 ifk why bro but I am new at djing but still I wish I could do it decently but 1 fay il learn
Skip to 4:30 if you want to see the tip.
