I have a 14" 5.56 Bren 2. Pinned and welded a muzzle device. My favorite 5.56 rifle followed closely by my Zastava M90. Great video. I really like your setup!
@@DacusMaIus Disagree. Bren 2 is short stroke gas piston. AK is long stroke gas piston. Mechanical action is similar due to it being a gas operated rifle with a rotating bolt design I suppose (but all modern rifles are), thats kind of the end of the similarities. I would think of the Sig 550 series as modernized/westernized AK myself. The IWI Tavor is long stroke piston in a bullpup. The PSA Jakl is long stroke piston in something that kind of looks like an AR. FN FAL, Daewoo K2 as well. These are all from "westernized" countries - maybe not including Israel depending on how you look at it, and all came after the AK. Funnily enough, a big inspiration for the AK was the M1 Garand - an American design. The Bren 2 is more like the AR-18/180, Sig spear/MCX, Steyr AUG, HK 416, Beretta ARX, FN SCAR. These are also all from "westernized" countries and came after the AK. Thats just how I see it mainly based on the gas operating system and lineage.
Great video! Some points from a Ukrainian sapper that used the Bren 2 in its 11" select fire military configuration (almost identical to the Bren displayed at 1:05); 1) For military application, the barrel is too thin. There were multiple gunfights where I went through two or three magazines very rapidly, and the barrel began to overheat so badly, I had to transition my support hand to a mag well grip. It should be noted, however, the first magazine was often depleted in fully automatic, which I am sure contributed to this gripe greatly. 2) The ambidextrous magazine release, although in theory a great tool to have on a fighting rifle, becomes a clumsy hinderance when you are doing thirty-kilometer, multi-day movements in the woods in full kit. It would eject a loaded magazine when I would rest the weapon on my front, the pressure from the plate carrier being enough to depress the button. Not a great feeling doing a reconnaissance patrol and your heavy loaded magazine tumbles out of your weapon, loudly impacting on the ground. 3) The standard folding stock without any type of riser is not great for magnified optic setups. It makes acquiring and keeping a good cheek weld and eye box difficult on an LPVO type optic, no matter at which length of pull you set it up at. I just ran a dot, but our marksman mounted a Leopold Mk4 on his for a kind of improvised SPR setup. It still got the job done but was not a comfortable affair for him. 4) The standard, stubby metal handguard with the short 1913 rail sections is not great. It is heavy and has limited space for attachment points. That extended handguard on your Bren 2 likely would have made me happier. Plus, that heavy metal handguard in combination with the thin barrel overheating issue made it a toasty rifle to hold on to for prolonged gunfighting. 5) The built-in sling mounting points are in terrible places, which I am glad that you touched on. Other than that, I think CZ is building a really nice Bren family of weapons! I am hoping the Bren 3 makes its way over to our lands. CZ is actually setting up a Bren assembly plant in Western Ukraine, with some rumblings amongst the armed forces that the Bren in some iteration may be the next standard service rifle for the ZSU, finally replacing the AK platform. I see this is relatively likely. Thank you for the excellent video, and I am glad you are enjoying your rifle!
It's always good to see more content on Brens. I have the 11' 7.62x39 and haven't had any issues after running it in 2 comps. Fyi, I only changed the hand guard to a hbi...everything else is stock
I absolutely love my Bren 2. I originally got it as the 14" 5.56 pistol. I pinned & welded a SureFire Warcomp to the barrel to make it past 16" and then installed the HB Industries handguard and trigger with their disconnector. And for the stock, I sourced a legit CZ Bren 2 military stock.
They upgraded it with the lessons learned in Ukraine. But yeah I know what you mean. Parts support is more what I worry about. I just wish they would have Colt make it and supply parts for maintenance.
Probably better to update the product and address weaknesses than be like Colt and not change a single thing simply because they had those juicy government contracts
great review/ vid! i like the cz bren 2, especially yours! that said, it doesnt do enough stuff better than an AR platform that i know how to work on, have tools and spare parts for.. to justify the cost.
I have the same model SBR’d and after the HBI upgrades its amazing. It really breaks my heart that they won’t make 300 blk caliber conversion. Its so easy to pop the barrel.
I picked up the Carbine version back in march as an impulsive buy for 1600 out the door and man it’s my favorite rifle to shoot. It’s so smooth and after shooting it suppressed with an SRBS I’m never going back. Hopefully we get the 300 blackout Bren 3 in a few years.
"Most underrated" is kind of an odd statement considering how amazing this rifle is. Many channels have covered this rifle as being one of the best rifles out there. CZ makes some good stuff.
I recently got a 16.5" and I've been quite happy with it unsuppressed. Suppressing it has involved extra steps for me, but I've gotten it to about where I like it. I'm not sure if I would have liked the 14.5" more. Do you think that the weight savings on a 14.5 make the longer gas system on the heavier 16.5, a moot point?
I have a 14" x39 that I had pin and welded with surfire warcomp ( reduced recoil a lot) got the HB hanguard, gas selector / chrome piston and spring, and trigger. Running an ACR stock. Had some stove pipe issues at first, but CZ finally came out with the 3 hole gas selector, and then HB came out with one about the same time that fixed the issue. I think my Perun X16 is a better platform for 5.56, and shares some AR15 parts. I also have the BREN 805 s1 that is underated IMO.
I loved my Bren 2 but when I reached out to CZ about spare parts and caliber/barrel conversions, they said they had no plan to support the platform at this time.
I have the same Bren 2 11' barrel, shot around 500 rds suppressed out of the box with the Dead Air Wolf Man and Lazarus 6 never had any problems with gas setting. Love the rifle.
I will say the 8" version does not suck. I have an HBI handguard (shortie) and a few other things - it just runs. It shoots well, it's gentle for a pistol. I had a shortie AR as well - and yeah, night and day difference in every way.
Bren2 can midgate gas, to a point. It works like a charm if you have reduced backpressure can on there. I run it on HBI setting 1 with WB and it ejects just before 3 o'clock with 5.56 brass ammo. Also 11" SBR, with HBI parts, and Bren 2 BR stock. Plhv2 on SWVL mount w/ Axon, Arisaka VFG, Exps3-4 and Eotech 5x both on Unity mount. Your can seem to be the biggest shortcoming of your setup, I have tested mine with a regular baffled can and Hux before settled on WB, so I know you are getting a lot more gas and recoil. Also ran the 16", it has an extra thick barrel and it is just way too front-heavy and long after light, laser and a can. Could be a good choice for people who want a more stationary(or extra simple) setup.
For those who consider running a Hux, it will let you run it on a regular setting all the time, which is simple. Just keep in mind it will have an extra muzzle signature and noise to the front esp on a short barrel. Not so great indoors or at night. WB almost requires an HBI piston because it seems to have more backpressure since it is optimized for M4. But the end result is much better in almost every aspect, except now you have to switch between settings 1 and 2.
Im still fond of my original Bren . I know people talk down on it but i just consider it my quality 5.56 AK! Hopefully the 3rd version will get stateside.
hey wanted to thank you I wanted to wait until we went through the entire process of ordering a suppressor. Your instructions on how to get this delivered to your door were Excellent!!
Important in BREN good weapon 1st gas piston system like AK mechanism smooth and barrel CHF. cold hammer forged it is give more and more limit ammo for this weapon. it is very very important. gas system and barrel
Here in south africa CZ has a good reputation, but you are looking at spending 2 or 3 months salary on just the rifle. When you look at decent ammo and training, you can be spending up to 6 months salary. The worst part is that most of that is just govt taxes to stop people from being legally armed.

I agree with the title. Everything CZ is underrated. With that said, the Bren3 is going to be gods gift to all of 2A. I can’t wait. The short rail is for the birds though.
@ handguard is massive and makes the gas regulator hard to adjust (their older gen handguard had an extension that solved this issue but they don’t make it anymore). Mediocre trigger, worse ergos (imo), longer overall length than an AR with the same barrel length, front heavy compared to a DI AR. Don’t get me wrong i don’t think it’s a bad rifle, I’d just never pick it over an AR.
I gotta say, that looks gorgeous. You really did right by it with that handguard/fore-end. However, as you mentioned, cost. $1,799 MSRP then you add all the accoutrements to make it like yours and you're looking at over $2,500 for a piston 5.56 gun. Again, super awesome looking gun, shoots super smooth and flat, that's great. But could I not get similar or better performance out of a $1000 AR15? Perhaps even cheaper? I think I wouldn't complain a bit about this if I didn't start salivating at the sight of the damn thing. I don't complain about $2000 gucci ARs or AKs, I think I just have a rare(for me) case of envy. And earning only 50k a year means I would have a HELL of a time justifying replacing my AR15 with this beauty. And yes, I would replace it, I'm not keeping multiple guns of the same caliber. Blech. Now I need to go do research on the terminal ballistics of short barreled 5.56 guns.
98% of people don’t wanna spend more money on another AR15 wannabe. My AR15 can actually do more than this Bren2. Change the upper to 300 blk out and shoot a different caliber.
I’ve seen video’s from the Ukraine where they say the CZ Bren 2 is the best battle rifle ever made. They say they prefer it over any other battle rifle.

I have owned since November 2020 and been shooting the Bren 2ms upgraded and customized 14 inch 7.62x39 that I had a PWS FSC Compensator 30 which is designed for 308 Winchester rifles and I have it installed on two AR10 and AR15 300BO but is the longest Muzzle device I could find at 2.8 inches and when adding a crush washer for pin and welding it makes the Overall barrel length 16.6 inches. I also added pretty much the entire HBI catalog for the bren 2ms including their adjustable gas valve and spring system plus the HK G36 folding stock. I have also added the Dan Haga Enhanced Grip Backstrap that turns the Bren Grip into something similar to a Magpul MOE Grip one of my favorite weapon grips. I have also added the Extended Selector Levers and Folding Charging handle from Neoteric Designs which I purchased directly from the gentleman that owns Neoteric Designs shortly after he posted pictures of them on Reddit back in 2021 and 2022 and they have worked Great! One thing that I also added was the Extended Magazine Paddle and Extended Magazine Release from A3 Tactical and Bren 2 Enhanced Bolt Catch Lever by Lingle Industries which does make allot of difference over the OEM one. The other thing that I changed that not allot of people do but does GREATLY IMPROVE the Very Nice Factory Trigger is the HBI Aluminum Trigger and the HB922 Disconnector that made my trigger a very nice 3.5 LBS Trigger all the time with NO OVER TRAVEL and Very Tactile RESET. The SIG556R is basically a SWISS made AK47 since it uses the Long Piston and AK mags and the Gen 2 that I have has been Trouble free since Day ONE back in October 2013 and now has over 15K rounds thru it and the Bren 2ms has about 7K rounds with ZERO Malfunctions!

Cheaper
Cheaper and eliminates the AR style charging handle.

Because CZ has a long track record of great designs.
@@matthewconnor5483 at least they don't ND into your leg. Nor does the barrel move freely inside the trunion.
