What made me realize the thing I love the most about Mushoku Tensei is the characters that actually feel like real people is Soldat, of all people.
I feel like in most other anime, Soldat would be this caricature/trope of this loud-mouthed, egotistical guy who had the power to match, until he gets humbled and humiliated by the MC. I honestly sorta expected him to be like this, so when he apologized and actually tried to help Rudeus, I was just blown away. Even relatively minor characters like Soldat were treated with the utmost respect and feel like actual, living, breathing people.

The amount of "jerk-to-wingman" moments in the show is great XD People can go on all day about the ladies around the MC, but some of his greatest wins are quite literally the absolute Chads of friends he makes along the way. I'm still floored at how much I ended up liking Zenoba, and seeing him actually start to "mature" as well in the background. It's great stuff.

@@ogun6464 yeah frieren is great, but it's more simpler than MT. Their charactes are too pure and with little human flaws.

    • @oppressorable

      @@mattersondoom That.
In the end, Frieren characters flaws were picked to be endearing, have very little effect on their ability to socialise and be liked by the viewers. Normal peoples are much more flawed and dirty.
I love Frieren and the characters are great characters but Mushoku tensei characters feel like peoples. They are sometime ugly but so are real peoples. That's why then lessons and the characters grow feel so impactful.

there are lots of people on X that tells Rifujin "your work saved me" or "i can now see this or that situation in my life diferent" etc etc and I don't think I've ever seen anything like it with a work of fiction, the simple fact that so many people have felt a change in their lives, whether small or large, is a testament in itself to the influence that MT has on future works, even if It leads to some people hating the series, at least it made them feel something, it made them reflect and even participate in healthy discussions about how it affects them, I never saw it before and I honestly don't think I will see it again.
Regarding animation and production, I think we should always keep in mind that the first season was in production for 4 or 5 years, that level of animation will not be repeated having half or even less production time between seasons.
As a personal opinion, I think that the second season had a great disadvantage compared to the first in being criticized, the first season was seen as its own product and loved as such, which encouraged people to read the novel, this new wave of readers feel the need to constantly compare the anime and the novel, it is understandable but the disadvantage I am referring to is that these new readers stopped seeing the anime as its own product and base many of their criticisms on the "they changed this "They omitted the other thing" completely ignoring what the anime does by itself, this is greatly reflected in the abundance of videos about "lost content" forgetting to review the anime, I honestly hope that when season 3 premieres they have already learned how to see the anime for what it is and not as an animated version of the novel

I’d personally argue that the story isn’t about redemption but taking responsibility.
Rudy is not a perfect or even great man. (Sorry Eris) he is a flawed pervy lazy shut-in of a man-child.
But he becomes a man like Paul a man you can count on when it counts. (Despite being a man-slut right Norn 😂)
All his wives know this they know he is a creep but a reliable honest creep.
Sylphie says as much “I expected Rudy would bring another woman home he is kind of a perv”.
But she trusts him not to go behind her back & abandon her for another woman. (Which is what Old Rudy broke)
First, he learns in his second life to be responsible as Roxy’s pupil by going outside then most notably for Sylphie (even if he had ulterior motives).
But Paul notices this and has him change course in responsibility 2: Eris’s tutor & eventual guardian on the demon continent. Then friend & lover.
But he doesn't act responsibly in realizing Eris isn’t in the right headspace when she offers to sleep with him. And take her aside (he was still a pervy kid).
Then the third time he learns to take responsibility is for himself & his life after his time with Counter Arrow & relearns it with the help of Soledad.
Then finally he learns to take responsibility after Paul's death for his family as a husband and the new head of the family.
Almost forgot it starts to show this when he takes responsibility for Norn & Eisha by making sure they find their place in the family.
And later his infidelity by telling his wife he slept with Roxy. And later well anime fans will just have to wait for those spoilers.
He may stumble but Rudy always will learn & work to fix things.
He doesn't screw up often but when he does he does massively to offset his overpowered nature.

about the harem thing personally if i had a friend who had 3 wives i wouldnt judge him on that, if they live in harmony who cares...i am amazed that people are so triggered by this when lets be honest the majority of us have never experienced being in a harem or having a harem so the majority dont have the point of view necessary to say is bad or good...through the history there were many cultures where poligamy was a normal thing when each wife had her position and role in the family heck in the nature in many many species often only the alpha males can mate ...in the end all i wanted to say that for me the harem thing in mushoku is a very detrimental part, what i am really interested in is the story, the world, the depth of the characters how authentic they feel the choices they made the development they have and how all interact with each other to make a narrative believable and interesting to watch...i dont want to see a perfect character who doent make mistakes and who doesnt have flaws that would be fcking booooring for me

He's basically a good guy, trying to do the right thing, but what really is the right thing? People in real life have perverted thoughts too, its in our dna to procreate. The MC is a traumatize shut in loser who see his reincarnation as a second chance to overcame his mistakes and flaws. The story is essentially a long story of character development for the MC.

Well translated ! This is what I also thought, but English is not my first language so I couldn't convey and deliver it to a paramount view as you did. I feel satisfied that I am not the only person who's seeing it with this point of view and I always like how you deliver your thoughts, especially to Mushoku Tensei. You are truly a "OTAKU SPIRIT!"
Anyways, as per Character's weakness, especially Sylphie's one. It was a perfect mistake because that actually gives acceptance to what Rudeus did. That moment, as everyone knew that he couldn't have let Roxy suffer and by that, he has to offer Marriage to her. As simple as that, he really WILL commit to Faithfulness, personally for me. But the situation has led to this and Elinalise helped him understand as she also wants Roxy to be happy. He may harbor feelings of Love and Admiration to her from his past, but from the Marriage onwards, the decision he made is for Roxy's happiness, not for him and of course, which leads to a great happiness for him. Everyone should look deeply about his decision making and how the pain, suffering, situations, etc. influenced him. Luckily, per Sylphiette's experience, he saw this early when she was still a child. He grew up seeing Paul with 2 wives, that became a norm to her. That she even said to herself "This is how Grayrats are." and even had a re-visitation to evaluate it again when they are in the Magic School, especially when she almost fainted seeing him doing a lovey-dovey ( in her eyes ) with Pursena. And from that point, she knew that it'll not be long that he will take a new wife. As she said, right? Okay... That's what "She" thinks. But that's not what Rudeus think, as I mentioned above, despite him being perv. He really wants to embrace Faithfulness. You will see how he has been doing alot of Gesture to reaffirm his faith with his Holy Relic. Showing that in these type of suffering he will not stumble. All what I said can be backed up with the Light Novel if you read. So, like he said. This is a unique "Character" that is very close to how humans decide, a realistic version of decision making in life and how situations can be. Not everyone gets the silver spoon, so not everyone IS able to understand. You can argue all you want, but I put you on his place, I bet you wouldn't last in the field. Guts will laugh at you while puck dances with your misery. Though, I understand that each of us is entitled with their own opinion, if you have a very concrete valid point, I would like to hear that out, if not, you just talk about morality purely out of Principle without Reality taking over. Then my boy, you're just making your ego fed with your "Own" principle truth. Your pre-conception of life lacks the true understanding of individual realities that each of us has. You will always stay stagnant. This is the greatest story for me, a level to Berserk.
    P.S. Aloha and Mahalo !

The deep emotions it can draw out, seemingly effortlessly, will make this series a classic for a long time, as next-generation fans will discover how brilliantly Rifujin weaved this tale together. We are not perfect people, and it is these character flaws in fictional characters that make them relatable to us. For example, SAO GGO is so much more relatable than the main SAO series because Karen/Llenn has an inferiority complex in real life but finds recognition in an online world, something that a lot of people facing their own inferiority complexes can relate with. Yes, we do need those entertainment fiction that makes us laugh without thinking too much, but it is those stories that we can relate to and make us reflect on issues that leave a mark on us and become a part of our own growing process.

One thing I've noticed, Andrew, is that the majority of those who "dislike/hate" Mushoku Tensei are those who mainly watch Shounen anime.
That, to me, doesn't make you an anime fan.
Mushoku Tensei is a Slice of Life anime with Action, Angst, Drama, Suspense & Isekai sprinkled throughout the story.
Again, it's the anime-only fans who haven't read the novel to discover how Truly wondrous this world and it's story is.
It's foolish to compare an anime fantasy medieval world to our own, especially when it comes to Japanese culture and their tendencies.
At least they're not eating ass like our western culture.

Rudy feels for lack of a better word human, he has flaws and he slowly comes to work on said flaws. The growth that we see from him and those around him is honestly my favorite part of the series.

I LOVE mt, I love the anime adaption even more.
I get & like the idea of Rudy changing, bettering. In my opinion this is portrayed better in the anime most of the times, sometimes (i.e. Rudys internal monologue after Pauls death) better in the LN.
But I hate one thing. Just at the start of LN13:
    .
    .
Mildest of spoilers for LN13 first 3 chapters (thoughts of Rudy) ahead
    .
    .
    .
    .
Why does the author need to write about that Rudy is NOT thinking about his preteen sisters in a sexual way?
Why does Rudy need to think about the development of the bodies of his sisters?
Yes, I know it is important for him to have flaws, but why this? Cant we leave it at the corny sexual encounters with Sylphy and Roxy, his general horniness or the regrets he has 'cause of his errors (he repeats)?
Dunno, just wanted that off my chest - I was just angered that all this good development is just followed by LN13 - as far as I am aware, nothing ever comes of these weird thoughts, so I am happy to ignore those chapters.

I want to provide a different pov to those calling Rudy a “child-lover” I’d say not he only was interested in other kids when his body was that age.
Second you could argue he was a child a man-child but a child. Just one exposed to hentai & never grew up.
As he never has hit on Julie or any of the other kids after his body grew up as he became a man in mentality.
Is he still a perv yes but he would never try anything with any kids as shown by his disdain for that Duke guy.

I love anime like this because it makes you think about your preconceived beliefs and questions them. Makes you consider that the pedophile pervert was misunderstood and traumatized, the rapist and cheater was a good father and husband, and the homewrecker had genuinely good intentions. These labels have heavy meanings in today's cultural consciousness, to a point where they're probably the heretics and witches of our time and will be prosecuted by the court of public opinion for the rest of their lives. But MT asks of us to empathize with these people and lets us know that most people are flawed and don't normally have bad intentions. There are people in our discourse that we automatically shut off listening to the moment they throw in a specific label, and this show makes us question that part of ourselves.

Never ceases to amaze me. IRL infidelity is pretty much a binary on/off switch for a relationship in my eyes, unless children are involved, being one of the greatest betrayals one can have to their partner.. yet this isn't real life, it's not even Earth, nevermind Japan. We're also in Rudeus' head the whole time and, as we've seen, Sylphie is just.. built different 🤣
One of the very few situations in which I was genuinely rooting for them all to come to some sort of understanding and acceptance of the situation, but also really happy that Norn got the opportunity to fully speak her mind and make her feelings known. And her doing so is not exclusively a vector for the angry audience through which to channel, it makes a great deal of sense from her perspective, her mother not having been a mistress, while spending a great deal of time under her grandmother's iron thumb and Millis doctrine.
.. Also Roxy deserves happiness; her getting to know and living with Sylphie, I think, is an even bigger win for her than bagging Rudeus 😅

I have never seen a series I loved as much as Mushoku Tensei which had such deep flaws running all the way to the story's foundation. Note that while I read manga, MT is a series I've only followed through the anime and that this comment will mostly be from a fiction editor's perspective and not as a generic fan's (I used to work in speculative publishing).
The real problem is ethics; MT is trying to explore a number of ethical quagmires, but is trying to do this from a generically good person point of view. There are limits to how far you can think into an ethical problem while remaining generic. A specific problem is that Rudeus has always had problems sexually objectifying women. A trait Paul did not teach him to control. This character flaw is typically played for laughs with him praying to Roxy's panties and such. Now that he's in a polygamous relationship with Roxy (the target of his objectification) and Sylphiette (the one he wronged) this character flaw is now locked in place with the sunk cost behind these relationships.
I suppose he could partially address this fault by reconnecting with and settling into a platonic relationship with Eris, but that would only ever partially resolve the matter.

I still think how the polygamy was written is pretty weak as it comes across like someone who can't pick a love interest so 'why not all' if Sylphie would say that Rudy's love is like his father and she'll keep supporting him the more partners he takes just like how she will support ariel and Luke. it would feel a lot more real and less of a harem joke

What people fail to realize is that the world of mushoku follows a bit of the culture of the old japanese times where it is accepted to have multiple wives during the old times. Mushoku alse reflects the japanese culture of women accepting that when a married man goes to hire a prostitute, the wife does not bother it since it's practically just sex for them as long as no emotions involved and that the husband would not leave the wife. They treat it as a service. Much like Slyphie, she knows this and is more concerned having left out than her husband loving another woman.
All that said, when we're viewing or visiting another culture, we don't say "Your culture is wrong and f*** up" "You should be better yourself" but rather ask the questions why they do certain things.
Also, tell that to the many people who watch and love Game of Thrones. Tell that to Ironman who's literally drunk all the time, casually having different women. Tell that to the many flawed characters in most movies and even in real life.
These people saying things on a fictional world should definitely consider checking themselves and leave their high horse for once in a while. Nobody is perfect in this world, let alone in that fictional world.
    Separate the fiction to non-fiction.

A lot of the stuff in Mushoku Tensei makes me uncomfortable in many ways, but like in a good way? When seeing the world of the setting it feels like an actually foreighn world, foreighn morality, races have differences, etc. It does not feel like an IRL-transplant like most things do.
I also like that the characters are like people. Some character flaws can't just be solved like Paul's impulsiveness or Rudeus's mental weakness. They never really overcome those, they learn how to deal with them in a constructive way though. Cut off limbs don't grow back, disabilities are not randomly healed, mistakes are not just unmade. It's just a good story.
It has some flaws imo, but nothing is perfect. Some of the more gimmicky anime-style personality quirks sometimes clash with the more realistic down to earth reactions and occurances for example, reading it can feel a bit uncanny because the story is a hybrid of a very down to earth drama and an isekai anime.
My first encounter wish Mushoku Tensei was a oneshot manga covering the first episode of the s2 anime. I hated it. It seemed like a nice story about a guy whose lover died, but it suddenly got revealed he just got dumped and was keeping on to some stolen hair and panties. I thought it was retarded and out of place. It's probably how those watching the anime feel if they refuse to engage it on it's own therms and try to either see it as a westerm style fantasy drama or an isekai to be self-inserted into, when it kinda needs to be seen as it's own thing entirely.

That's the point Mushoko Tensei wants us to give a Character like Rudes who was at his lowest to give him a chance to be better. Not many people can give such a person another chance and believe they can change. Also we humans are all flawed and we have different problems. It helps us to study our problems and encourages us to solve them little by little.

Honestly i have my problems with the story , and i really don't like rudy's creepy predatory behavior , it just doesn's sit well with me . But I do have to say i'm glad that he is always punished for these behaviors , he recognizes that he is indeed fucked up in the head and a pervert and actually tries to overcome it . I still hate him groping a young eris in season 1 while mentally he is like 40+ years old at that point . and i really don't love the idea of him having a harem , but if they actually work with it and explore the consequences of him being in a harem in a believable way then im down . I don't mind the now generic isekai stuff like him being overpowered af or him having a harem if they actually go in depth into those facets of the story and work with the concepts .The show already does it very well with how he is still trying to overcome character flaws he has had since his previous life .every other isekai ive seen never really maximize the potential of the setting of another world , they never touch on how a person would realistically react to being isekaied or how they would cope with it , how the previous life affects the choices the characters make in the new one etc . The show has actual plot , even when they slowed down the pacing for season 2 it's still filled with actual world building and character development , rudeus , while op , he makes mistakes and actually struggles and gets hurt alot more often than any other isekais , and things actually go wrong for him multiple times . Its a shame that the only story that actually milks the fck out of the isekai setting and uses it to its fullest potential is a story about a damn pedo trying to be better with the second chance he is given , regardless of whether i believe he is beyond redemption or not due to personal biases i have . I really wish that more stories with isekai elements actually use them to its fullest potential instead of them being cringy power fantasies with harems . It's honestly a disservice to storytelling itself and it's a damn shame that for some god damn reason beyond my comprehension , most isekai authors make actual garbage and MT is the only proper story out of the entire isekai genre . I'm starting the LNs soon , i am not waiting 3 years for season 3 , im too invested in this story even if the MC is a damn pervert i still care , and that really means something

Rudy is the flawed character people swear they want. Was he a bit weird at the start, yes, but that's such a small part of the storyline. People who don't watch the show treat it how people who don't watch anime treat the genre as a whole.

i find it kinda funny how people are outraged of rudy having multiple wives when a religion IRL still practices that to this day. I happen to be near this religion, and it's actually studied extensively in our higher education so that we have an open mind about that subject. Not necessarily saying that 'that practice is good', but instead saying this practice has been done for thousands of years in that religion and we should accept that for what it is. I just feel bad for people who doesn't have this, mainly cause they don't know how vast our world actually is, and it's as fascinating as the subjects in Mushoku Tensei. MT just made it so this particular subject is brought to a wider audience and oh boy were they shocked 😂.

Having watched the anime thus far... is there really that much "hate"? Seriously, I'm not sure of this, is it really that hated in comparison with others?
What I do know, compared with all the others I have seen, Mushoku is much better. There's much that I disliked about Rudeus but yes, he looks more like a "character" than others. My biggest doubt is, did all that "hate" existed before the anime? I can understand the anime getting a lot of hate, but the LN? I'm reading it now and all those extra bits and perspectives that were cut from the anime makes it so much more interesting, how can people "hate" the series with all those interesting characters and histories?
