I find it amazing how well written the characters are in Mushoku Tensei. Having watched a bunch of isekai. It's a breath of fresh air and feels real.
it's funny that the best isekai story is also the og one. whole genre was devolving for all those years

I think then you should check out "dead mount death play" Ik the name is offputting but it's incredibly well written with a lot of interesting great characters. the animation & artstyle are really clean and eye pleasing. the openings and ending themes are solid too. it's currently on air the first cour aired in spring 2023 and second is set to air this fall both cour having 12 ep each. Oh and last but not the least it is written by the author of 2 masterpieces baccano and durarara. It was really underrated in it's airing in spring and def the hidden gem of the season for me even above heavenly delusion. I hope cour 2 will get it the recognition it deserves.

I think the issue is assuming intent, A child her age isn't going to know that Rudeus is a 40 year old past neet with abandonment issues.
@otakuspirit thats fair.. I'd argue Eris was never a very good communicator though... but im definitely just personally projecting, lol. For her age, she's actually incredibly mature. It's easy to get mad as a viewer, but I guess I dont really wish she wrote a more thought-out letter. Because people are flawed, and if I could have every scene go "my way" the show would suck lol. Also, yeah, I could also argue that even if Rudy wasn't dealing with crazy abandonment issues and his lack of social intelligence, that letter would still hurt. But to reiterate, none of this really matters and after thinking about it, I dont wish the scene was done any different.

He was a reckless & cocky child who was taken away from his family everyone he knew except her.
In a way he relied on her too. She gave him purpose as we would seen during his depression arc.

Eris isn't violent, she is straight up Feral. She is still my favorite female character though. I cant get enough of her character. She is flawed, but she is also honest, loyal, and fights for her ideals and beliefs. What's not to love about her.
Well her way of expressing herself on paper like in letter is certainly hindering her ability to speak honestly.

@@Treacherous_One Just to give u an example she was one of those child who has such serious anger management issues that once when his teacher was sleeping at his room she came up and beat him up with a stick enough to bring him to near death that he has to be taken into the medical facility and that person was her previous education instructor before rudeus so that's the amount of abuse rudeus used to daily receive from eris even upon their first meeting(where he was literally slapped and punched in his face multiple times just for being too polite with her even when he was sincerely teaching her with ghislane) so much that he had to think about how he wouldn't even be able to heal himself by casting a spell if he gets beat up too badly enough to speak as he can't do healing without any incantation but just because it's played for laughs being an anime trope(even when rudeus isn't actually at fault) so I am surprised by how much the people really underestimate that tsundere aspect of her character as a flaw in contrast to rudy as seeing it from eris's perspective she didn't mind beating up a 7 year old ( just because she is from a noble family and magic exists) So no she clearly is not like any normal teenage girl.
I understood that Eris wanted to get stronger to stand by Rudeus's side, but I didn't know she felt that she was holding him back or leaning on him.
She literally states it in her conversation with Ghislane after they leave

An example given was that because she was weak in the ship due to sea sickness, Rudeus had to spend the entire journey healing her. After the journey, when Eris was resting, Rudeus didnt reat and went directly to fetch Ruijerd and there he lost to Gyes.
We as viewers / readers know that he lost because he had let down his guard and faced an attack he had never seen before, but from Eris' POV, how can a godly person like Rudeus lose in a battle against Gyes, ohh he spent the entire journey healing me and couldnt rest to recover his mana, so during the fight he didnt have enough mana so he lost.
So she blamed Rudy's loss against Gyes to herself and her weaknesses, considering herself to be a burden. And then you have Rudy the great, bolstering her thought process by stating he would become strong enough that if they face any enemy as strong as Orsted, he can pick her up and escape.
My fave moment is when Eris hold Rudeus' hand after they *do the deed* and sees how small it is and she realizes that she has been relying on a child. They she slept with him to make him stay with her because she felt like she needed him. only to realize she was pinning all her hopes on a kid younger than her.
I really wish the Manga and Anime gave a bit more weight to that realization.
Actually that's manga only- in the light novel she has that realization when they're doing the deed and Rudy starts to run out of gas halfway through. It's honestly much better and more wholesome in the manga.
@@thatrabidpotato8800 the best part is that you later find out Rudeus grew weak and feeble while doing it with Eris because she kept going after he finished lol. It easily goes over your head when you read it in the LN, or at least that's how I inferred it.

Doesn't really matter. Most people who didn't read the LN understood exactly what her perspective was and it still doesn't change the fact that she went about the situation completely wrong. Doesn't matter if we know her perspective or do know. She is still a horrific person for what she did in the manner she did it

This should’ve been an ova with the goblin slayer ep also, it’s so cute how both rudeus and Eris are both so insecure about them being a burden in that arc and how both are so worried that the other would leave them. Also they both saw the best in each other cause doesn’t Rudeus in the school mention eris in the number of people capable of beating her, while eris sees rudeus as this powerful mage who could beat her when using magic.
Also is it confirmed that ghislaine is weaker than ruijerd, I thought they’d be around even, as I assumed ruijerd was around king rank mb higher, but ghislaine knows that sword god style that moves at light speed which would be rlly hard to deal with.
Sword-God style would straight-up murdered Ruijerd, he can't see attack coming from Emperor rank and above.
It's really hard to deal with it's not wrong, but for the end we said who's much stronger the answer is Ruijerd

You got mixed up. It was on Rudy's 10th birthday that Eris's mother sent her to him, not on her birthday. On her birthday, Rudy gave her the wand and Ghislane gave her the ring and then they fell asleep together.

I'm glad you pointed out Eris's pov. It's been surprising that most guys didn't catch it but my gf and her friends caught on once Rudy got the eye and they instantly related to Eris

While all the waifus are great Eris is my favorite. I love how she stands up for Ghislane and Rudy and how simple-minded she can be while also being a deep thinker. Whenever she gets emotional in the story it hits different than the others for me. Her VA may have had something to do with that though.

She basically has the best character development throughout the LN , equal to or probably even better than rudeus' development, which just makes me fall in love with her all over again
That is why she is the best girl. Even without this much of a backstory adaptation portrayed Eris masterfully. You can see and feel her love, dedication and fears through the duration of a first season. Syphie deserved something better.
I honestly feel the same way, the anime had more details in the first season to show how much Eris cared for Rudy. I feel like the writing hasn’t been at the same level… I’m still enjoying season 2, but tje writing doesn’t seem as amazing.
@@warrior3220 Rifujin definitely had a low point with Julie and Rudy-beast girls writing. But s2p1 has more production issues than the writing overall IMO. Sylphie is definitely also not the greatest character ever because she has been completely tied to Rudy and can't function without him. But yeah it's more about how Bind didn't properly create prev eps which made ep 11 impact diminish. Eris in S1 was another level of brilliant production

Season 1 was so much better its a 10/10 , season 2 is a 7/10 snore fest , i like the romance in mushoku tensei but its alone can't carry a season
@@kingdoom5022I think it’s more about the early season stuff and I knew most of season 2 would be hit or miss for some. I enjoyed it but it’s very different from season one. Season 3 will be a lot closer to season 1.
@@kingdoom5022the academy arc just introduces a bunch of important characters we will see for the rest of the show(zanoba, cliff, Julie, badi, Ariel, linia pursena), but the next 3 arcs have a lot of action.
Frankly it's amazing how good the show is with how much it has to omit from the source material in my opinion. I wouldn't have minded it to have been a bit slower and longer but obviously that requires a lot more money and risk.
And more episodes than a modern anime season.

I don't think they thought the show was going to be big at all after how many years of the Light Novel being finished. Had they known it was going to be huge, they would''ve taken an FMAB approach, since the entire story is done and simply needed to adapt it. All of it. With minor stuff cut out, like in FMAB.

The fact that Rudeus was able to injure Orsted at age of 13(I think) made him already one of the strongest in the world. And he actually can fight with Badigady(as Badi said himself) but this fight would destroy city.

Eris actually made goal after seeing Rudeus preparing for next encounter with Orsted.
When you think of it, Orsted mentioned, that Eris has destined to another man, and Rudeus’ appearance destroyed that chance. And that certain someone, if I remember correctly, was broken-hearted first time in his life.

I actually really appreciate this video, like I found you maybe a couple months ago and I’ve watched everything you’ve put out because you have a really well spoken flow to you. I never read the books so I had no idea how the hot chill pepper felt and to kinda get this insight on her was actually really great to have that like sense of understand with a character I never really understood to some degree.
Since in part 2 of season 2 Rudeus gets to hear another person's impression of Eris' actions I think it may be possible that we'll have an episode dedicated to her after that, both what she is up to and reframing the events from her point of view.
True the guardian fitz line happened in a real time tangent in the LN, so it could happen. I hope it happens for a certain sad chef too.

It's sad to see that a lot of people didn't understand Eris and would end up hating her, like they would do for mushoku tensei in general
I think most people hate her not because anything she did or how she is portrait. Her personality is relatable and understandable. She acted the way she is supposed to. But The letter... It destroyed all the good things she managed to build up. She ignored Ghislaine warning. Even knowing how it would turn out in the end, i still kind of disagree about how author handled it.

I also think the author kind of did her dirty but i also speculate its for the harem aspect because writing Eris in Sylphies position would make it ridicilous

Rifujin doesn't write simple characters, not even the irredeemable scumbags like Darius is simple, every single character has enough backstory to have its own novel, rijufin is a monster of an author
This story in the LN and the manga (I’ve read up to chapter 96 in the online manga and the 2 extensions [Eris and Roxy]) has a wider range of the story than most isekai and this anime seems to be wrapped in Rudeus only which is what I like about your vlogs.
To be fair, even if there wasn't the gigatons of expanded lore available via the WN and LN, there'd still be cuts for pacing and other considerations.

Imagine abandoning someone at their most vulnerable and telling yourself it's for their own benefit. It is only because of luck (plot armor) that she didn't end up getting Rudeus killed. Eris is the walking embodiment of "I'm gonna love you through it."

She didn't leave him at his most vulnerable tho they were at a safe refugee camp and it was her who just lost her whole family not Rudeus who found many of them during the journey

Yeah, more then just 1 episode.
You can actually get a lot of her characterization through micro details like her gaze, facial expressions etc. S2 has dulled a lot of people and they forget just how much of a masterpiece S1 Bind is. The gave Eris a lot of characterization through her expressions while maintaining Rudy PoV, especially during the opening song.
Of course there is lot of skipped content but unlike other "standard anime" (including Mushoku S2p1 itself unfortunately), Bind masterfully wove details into S1. I will never stop gushing about what Bind accomplished with S1. Its truly sad that we may never see something like S1 Bind in Mushoku ever again (I hope they prove me wrong in S2P2).
Sadly Season 1 director is not working on this season 😢
I'm holding out hope that this first part of season 2 was done with budget in mind because it's of the school arc. I hope that they spend more time and money where it counts moving forward.
Hopefully they're just saving the budget for the next part where it makes more sense to flex
@@kineographBOTThat’s a good point. We will probably see most of it at end of this season, and 100% next season. A lot more moving around. I would say season 2 you will see the most change in Rudy himself that’s why it’s really important. You also have all the characters you will going forward.

I love the how the characters have their own thoughts and feeling throughout the show and easily the story can be told by their perspective and still be an amazing anime. Especially when the characters don’t act based off of the main character but instead by their own feelings based on the world arounds them which makes the main character feel more real cause he doesn’t know everything which make everything more evident when rudy constantly gets the wrong idea about the things about it
I think this shows more than anything that even as a shut in his previous life, Rudeus was already smarter and more clever than most around him, it's simply the circumstances that lead him that way. If he really had no social skills or an idiot, he wouldn't have won the heart of Roxy that easily, he wouldn't have been able to learn magic so fast, and he definitely wouldn't be able to stand Eris and win her over.
Great story telling, it was passionate. I just started reading the novel and this just made me even more excited.
Wow man, what an excellent video. How you have managed to squeeze all the important stuff in such a short video is beyond me. And I am NOT being sarcastic. I think that MT is a masterpiece and I love the anime so much. Even being painfully aware with what is the price of adapting written material it still saddens me to see how much stuff is being skipped, especially when I see people who haven't read the novels wonder about stuff and make bad judgement/comments and think it has plot holes or even consider the author untalented and/or lazy. We need more OVAs and movies. Season 2 makes it even more of a problem. I hope something changes soon in that regard. I do not want to think that the studio made for this anime, just wants to cover everything as fast as possible and get money as fast as possible. I am not saying that is the case, I am saying I do NOT want that to be the case. Anyway, good job buddy, keep up the good work.

The thing with Orsted (and I can't remember if they say it in the anime or not), is that when Eris asks Rudy what he's doing, he phrases it badly. he says he's practicing for WHEN he meets Orsted again. Not IF.
This is what gives Eris the perspective that Rudy PLANS TO FIGHT HIM AGAIN, and why she feels the need to go off and get stronger, because she can't walk beside him if that's his goal, even though we as the reader/watchers know that isn't what he wants.

After this weeks recent episode I couldn’t wait anymore I’m now reading the LN and have found myself reading the side stories at the end of Volumes and see Eris is journey that the Anime clearly never tackled. This is my 1st LN I’m ever reading and to have u bring me up to speed with all the info regarding her perspective and how much it adds to the story this video truly couldn’t have arrived at the perfect time. Probably you already figured it out or were reminded, but remember Rudeus is not affected by the curses of others as much, because obviously he's not form this world originally. That's why the frar curse of Ruijerd doesnt affect him (and it was already faded out st this point anyway) and neither Orsted's fear curse.

6:25 That point about Rudeus not being scared of the superb, Rudeus find out later that curses can be linked not only to people but also objects and things, the curse of fear of the superb was linked to their green hair, the curses specify that all beings of the world would have almost unconditional fear of him, just like they do with the dragon god Orsted, but Rudeus has a soul that doesn't belong to their world making him immune to both curses, that is why he wasn't scare of both Ruijerd and Orsted. Of course the ideals that were preached to most kids would implement that fear and also make it everlasting, the curse is a burst of overwhelming fear but when the magic fear would go away all the memories and resentment of that fear would just supplement that lasting fear making it almost a hatred, you have to remember that the curse it's so overwhelming that animals would rather die that experiencing it, people would faint and soil themselves because for most people that was the first and/or only time they would experience such a high level of fear. Even adventures that you could say are the people who experience the most amount of variety of fear almost can deal with a single glance at him, because when you see a dragon it's something that you know you can't defeat but at the same time you can run away or hide from it, but the fact that the superb are said to be one of the strongest demon races as well with the fact that they can detect and find anything around them because of their third eye/gem in their forehead makes them almost an insurmountable enemy.

Yeah but when eris left Rudeus with her nonchalant letter. That broke him and that made him weaker. His heart and other things were damaged. I'm know she didn't think that would happen cause we all know how she thinks. But truth is any guy with a heart that gave up their virginity to a girl he loved and wakes up the next morning being left behind. It would destroy them too. Her mistake pushed Rudeus away and now he's with Sylphie in the anime. The end of season one had me balling cause I knew how he felt
I dont think the point is to say Eris did nothing wrong just that she had no malicious intent. And the context of why she left that dumb letter how she thought Rudeus would just get it.
And to show what she thought at major points in their journey.
I get why some people will dislike her always i just think its a bit petty to say everything bad Rudeus goes through afterwards even the Sara stuff is Eris fault however everything good has nothing to do with her

All she needed was explain shit to Rudeus like any normal human would, but the author wanted Rudeus depression arc. It was a great video, as an anime only I did learn a lot, but the lack of communication between the characters are just annoying. Classic anime trope just to force a particular plot or inner conflict.
I’m an anime only, and I could still understand all of this and see her perspective, I’m pretty sure they had a scene with her at the end of season 1 where she said she left because she wanted to come back to Rudy stronger than ever to catch up to him because of how she couldn’t do anything in the Orsted encounter.

I will say, that she did tag "right now" just after saying this, but who would notice that when she just left him and her beautiful hair behind.
Wow. Thank you so much for this video. Eris in the show is a great character, but I’ve definitely misunderstood her feelings for Rudeus so far. I’m especially glad for this understanding of the end of S1, which left me incredibly confused, and mostly feeling like Rudeus was at fault. I guess in that sense the show portrayed Rudeus’ perspective and feelings incredibly well (as it always does) but it really lacks the true sense of tragedy.
At this point, I think the best place for the anime to cover this would be as an adjunct to whatever season winds up containing Eris encounterimg the main narrative again.

To be honest anime did a bad job of implementing her i first watch anime too but then i read trough the manga at some point and now i get her... i understand that they can't possibly fit the whole manga into anime but hell important parts like this could be at least somehow fit in.

Rudeus is still Rudeus and there were already hints in anime how it will end up.
Specially when Roxy said how she imagine herself to fall in love as her idea.... and connect it where we are going next season it starts making sense.

Anime only here, Eris was good character but after watching this she is an amazing character. Shows can only do so much with original material, but I want to read it even more than I did before.

Whatever is being said as being skipped content, I feel like there's a hight possibility they just postponed it to show it in a later season. I don't doubt when Eris's time comes once again, we'll have a entire episode just to show all what she did for all this time, from the moment she abandoned Rudeus to the present moment, hence explaining her said skipped perspective.

Really high quality video. I am an anime-only and I appreciate these videos. I feel like all these mental details are very important and add an immense amount to the story, and it's a shame that the anime format can't seem to contain all this. The LNs for Mushoku Tensei remind me of VNs for other series in terms of just dumping mental state. Mushoku Tensei has a lot of great drama that I think makes it qualitatively very different from a lot of other isekais, particularly with it's recurring theme in the second season about forgiving family members, which makes it a good drama show though sometimes I do wish for more battles.
