  • WE DEAF CAN DO IT.
Gallaudet (in Washington D.C., USA) is the only university for the Deaf in the world, but there are some large Deaf programs at other schools around the world as well. One of them is called Tianjin University for the Deaf 聋人工学院 in Tianjin, China. It's a large program that is based on the same campus of Tianjin University of Technology.
In this video, not only you'll see my experience of visiting this college but local Deaf Chinese people share their experiences of being in college.
Reminder: This video is NOT to criticize China. If you feel that this seemed negative, it is how the Hearing world (referring to those who are not Deaf or Hard of Hearing) perceive us and aren't generally aware and educated about our community. This doesn't only occur in China but in the USA, Europe, etc. as well.
NOTE: There are different sign languages around the world.
    CSL: Chinese Sign Language
    ASL: American Sign Language

Wow what an amazing experience you had! ....Most deaf people in china unfortunately don’t get past middle school assuming they were able to attend a deaf school ,or they go to a hearing school that offers them no support in a classroom with 50 students and ultra high expectations and they can’t keep up after 3,4,5, grade , usually there may only be one deaf high school in the province, so alot of kids just stay in the deaf middle school and keep repeating 9th grade until 18,19,even early 20’s to satisfy their need for a school life... the schools are usually for blind, deaf, and mentally challenged , Since alot of the kids are older they try to give them job training so the blind learn how to massage , which they can find employment very easy, but the deaf usually get art training, like learning how to paint or as you saw the wood carving... i think its nice they support creativity and self expression through art but like anywhere else unless you are famous being an artist is not going to lead to good employment opportunities, so i think the deaf community in china which already deals with alot of discrimination and add low job opportunities , its not an easy life for them .... (by the way i live in china and know most of the deaf people in my town and visited the deaf school- elementary and middle school)

In Hong Kong, I heard there're two years (instead of one year for hearing students) for the deaf students who wish an advanced education after deaf school education finishes.

[Transcript: A light-skinned Mexican-American female with medium length brunette hair, standing center of the screen. She is wearing black and white t-shirt and gold lady of guadalupe necklace. Background scene is white walls and floor with art display in the back at the school setting.]
    Yes, we are Deaf
but we do have so much potential
[cut to different clips of Stacey and Deaf students on campus]
[cut to Stacey in the center of the screen with Chinese characters in the background and English, saying “Technical college for the Deaf”]
Have you heard about Gallaudet university in the USA?
    well, guess what?
There is another big university, but
It is a huge program that
shares the campus with Hearing students
There is about 400-500 Deaf students here
    wow, that's a huge number!
It is located right here in
    Tianjin, China!
[cuts to Stacey standing inside woodcarving class. Students are communicating and working on wood behind her]
It focuses on educating Deaf community
There are technical classes, such as computer science
art, fashion and different technical classes
    for the Deaf community here
[Stacey is accompanied with two Deaf females. The female on the far left as faded brown dyed hair. Black strap is shown across over her romper. The female in the middle is wearing a long light purple shirt dress that ends up to her knees. Her black hair is tied in a ponytail and is wearing a black rectangle glasses and neon yellow watch.]
So, what is the subject of this class?
    It is a woodcarving class?
female with romper: look at this
yeah, woodcarving. Look at this one!
stacey: so this is a Deaf school, right? All of you?
female: yes, that's right. All of us are Deaf.
There are so many of us, in different buildings too!
Stacey: They said that they don't know American Sign Langauge
and I told them to not to worry about that, it's fine
    so how do we communicate?
What's important is that you try to use a translation app
you can translate from Chinese to English
and you can also use gestures to communicate
    ah.
    so, this translation app says,
    "Waste tree, gets treasure."
the translation to English is wrong but
but I can assume that she's saying that
some trees are cut down and cannot let it go to a waste
so they bring it for woodcarving classes
and they will make it useful by
by making different beautiful wood sculptures
[cut to different scenes of Deaf students working on their projects]
I've always wanted to learn woodcarving!
    because it would be convenient
to make or fix something myself at home
[cut to scene where Stacey is talking to two same females]
Stacey: are there no Deaf teachers?
you know - Deaf [attempting to sign Chinese Sign Language]
female with romper: no, no. Only Hearing teachers.
female with romper: All of them are Hearing teachers,
none of them are Deaf teachers.
Stacey: there are really no Deaf teachers here?
both females: no, none of them at all
Deaf male: no, none at all.
Stacey: I will ask them if they hope to have Deaf teachers someday. do you wish - [struggle]
ah, um. Can you let me use your translation app?
I'll have to use the translation app because our sign
is very different. We can use gestures but
it can be difficult to use it with limited gestures
and to have a deeper conversation
but let me just try gestures then -
do you hope that there will be
    Deaf teachers in the future?
female with romper: mm, yes. I hope Deaf -
Stacey: how do you sign that in Chinese Sign Langauge?
[two females are teaching Stacey how to sign in CSL: "Do you wish you have Deaf teachers?”]
    Stacey: I’m learning!
Some of students say that there are no Deaf teachers
but they hope that they will have some in the future
On the phone, he was telling me that
there are finished works of their
wood sculptures and put it in display upstairs.
[cut to scene where Stacey is walking outside on campus. Hearing students are walking in different direction not the street behind her. Greenish tree and street are shown behind her.]
People have been look at me because they obviously
notice that I am not Chinese
I obviously look very different and stand out here
you can see people keep look at me
one of the reasons is because I'm signing
    and a foreigner.
There are even dorms for the Deaf students here!
[cut to scene of stacey walking toward upstair. Background scene is inside the building of the school.]
They are going to show us another classes for the Deaf
    such as painting class
they said that the computer classes are private
she says it is her favorite teacher who just walked by
and he is also a very famous painter in China
So, the Deaf students are learning by reading lips?
female in pink shirt dress: yes, they are watching the lips
[cut to scene of the female in pink shirt dress, she is sitting inside the classroom with long tables. Stacey is standing near the white board at the front of the classroom]
female in pink shirt dress: we all sit here and watch the screen there
Stacey: ah, you watch everything on screen here?
so if there is a video with someone speaking,
    are there subtitles available?
where you can see and read the captions on screen?
female in pink shirt dress: yes, there is.
Stacey: so there are no interpreters?
female in pink shirt dress: no, there are none.
are there any funds from the government to provide
    interpreting services?
female in pink shirt dress: there are only one teacher -
they usually don't know CSL or know a little bit of CSL
Stacey: ah, I see. So there are teachers that know a little of CSL
but they mostly write down everything on the board
do you all wish that there is an interpreter?
female in pink shirt dress: yes! yes! yes!
they really would like to have teachers that know CSL
or Deaf teachers to communicate with them directly
which is more visually accessible for them
on her phone, she said that
China hasn't really focused on supporting the
community, such as their rights and Deaf education.
there is a little focus on them, not enough
she also says that the Deaf culture here isn't
    strongly acknowledged or aware here
oh, the majority of you talk?
Many Deaf Chinese people here are Oral which means
they speak and sometimes may or may not know CSL
most of them are speaking and lip-reading
she says that she feels that the future will be
bright and better for them, in terms of accessibility
female in pink shirt dress: yes!!!
they are hopeful that there will be changes and
    they can do anything
what's important is that the Deaf community
    stand together
    educate the society,
advocate and spread awareness of their
    Deaf community here in China.
    Wow, I feel...
very lucky. I've learned a lot here.
They are still facing lack of inclusivity
even though it's now the year of 2018.
There are a lot of reasons such as culture, finance,
    and education about Deaf culture.
The Hearing society really needs to be more aware
how to support the Deaf communities around the world
I was really fortunate to have interpreters growing up
I was lucky to have some Hearing teachers
who kinda know sign language although
    it's SEE language not ASL
Some of the teachers know ASL
I had different experiences with them.
[cut to scene of stacey standing next to the art displays behind the glasses]
Do you see all of these works on display?
    they are all made by
    DEAF Chinese students.
    I am very proud.
    they are showing these that
    Deaf people CAN do it.
    We have abilities.
we can do anything - designing, fashion,
    making jewelry,
any designs, and even any computer tasks
    honestly, it's anything!
unfortunately, we have to keep constantly proving
    the world despite being Deaf.
    We have ABILITIES.
    WE ARE INTELLIGENT.
    the problem is that
the society that looks down upon us
    countless of times....
So many times that we have to work so much harder
    to fight for our rights.
to make them see our abilities.
    Yes, we are Deaf, but
WE CAN DO SO MANY THINGS.
    thank you.
[cut to an image of stacey’s standing center, looking down smiling. Background scene is brightly blue sky and surrounded with white sands. On the left side of the image, a logo of Deafinitely Wanderlust is shown. In addition to different social media icons and mentioning the name of social media handles (Facebook, Instagram, RUclips accounts are all @deafinitelywanderlust. Twitter is @deafwanderlust). On the right side of the image, a typography logo spelled out “Deafinietly Wanderlust” and a smaller font stated “through the eyes of Deaf female traveler.”]

I am an American hearing person. I once sat on a train in China and there was a deaf Chinese girl in the window seat. She kept signing to her boyfriend through the window while he was still on the platform. Anyway, I thought communicating through glass was the coolest thing ever! Haha
That’s cool that you learned a little bit of CSL too!

each country have their own sign language, but there can be few similar signs or very similar signs due to colonization or oppression - such as American Sign Language (ASL) influence in Malaysia and the Philippines & the history of Japanese colonizing South Korea and Taiwan, so KSL & TSL (Korean Sign Language & Taiwanese Sign Langauge) have few similar signs to Japanese Sign Language. There are a lot to say but I'm summarizing that up :)

    • @viticobl8851

Its a different language but there are similar and even the same signs in american and chinese sign... i would say its like knowing english and reading something in french or german, even if you don’t know french or german you would see enough similar words to kind of catch some of the meanings if you are clever enough ... i would say the “distance” between american and chinese sign is not that far as between spoken/written chinese and english

Will the deaf Chinese people attend the Chinese universities offering academic courses across China? Are the deaf rights savable in China. I honestly never heard about them before.

The Living God loves you so much that He sent His Holy Son Jesus from heaven to earth, to be born of a virgin, to grow up and die on a cross for our sins, and to be put into a tomb 3 days and rise from the dead the third day, and He (Jesus) went back up to heaven. We must receive Sinless Jesus sincerely to be God's child(John 1:12).After we get saved by grace through faith in Christ, if we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, then we will obey Jesus(John 14:15). Mark 1:15 "And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. "There's a real hell. It says in Revelation 21:8 "But for the cowardly, & unbelieving, & abominable, & murderers, & immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone..." Please sincerely receive Holy Jesus & put your true faith & trust in Him today and repent.
