  • A Folkie's rite of passage. Played on top of Skinner Butte in Eugene, OR. Played on a Martin 000-28H. My version is primarily adapted from Bert Jansch's. Recorded on a Zoom H6 and a Canon EOS 200D with a 50mm lens that was having a very hard time focusing.

By far my favorite arrangement of this song. Drawing on the 3 best known versions (JCF, BJ, S&G) you've made an arrangement that is far more interesting than any of the originals. Face it, any folk song with 6 verses and a repeat of the first needs some variation and you have nailed it. JCF's lyrics and basic song are timeless, the BJ work on the B string, and he little homage to S&G with the jump to the high G and the G to C walk downs is brilliant.

I don't see any similarity to James Taylor at all except in the calibre of excellence with both acoustic guitar and vocals. Josh has his completely own original creative imprint and style and voice and this is spoken from a lifelong JT fan ~ since the beginning. And now a Josh Turner loyalist! (And that goes for Carson too😉👌)Cheers.

Great version Josh. Jackson C Frank is not well known amongst young musicians, I guess because his life story is genuinely tragic and that doesn't make a great sales pitch. Jackson was a troubled genius, "Blues" always takes me somewhere else when I listen to it, picks me up when I feel down and brings me down to Earth when I'm too full of myself. God rest Jackson, thank you for keeping his message going.

Hi Josh - great cover. As I am in the UK, I am more than familiar with Bert Jansch, having met him on many occasions, including one memorable session when Bert, Ralph McTell, and a number of other prominent UK folkies were gathered in the Half Moon at Putney, and I was invited to join them for a memorable, but very alcoholic evening. Bert would be very pleased with this cover of his version of Blues Run The Game.

Camera Advice :) Change your focus mode from continuous-servo to single-servo or manual focus (focus on your mic manually and then make sure the aperture is wide enough to focus you too) . That’ll keep the focus just on you, and the camera won’t think the leaves “moving” is something to worry about. Hope this helps!!
