    Your my hero :-) i got told this week that i have scheuermann's disease and as im a bit of a fitness fanatic, this sent me into a bad depression. My physio did say i can still workout but go easy, less weigh more reps. NO arnie press or shoulder/military press. NO ab crunches. NO chin ups. NOT so much running as its impact. i also play football. Im 30 and heard that this is normally diagnosed in your teens so dont know why i am hearing about it now. Your shoulder press with the bar is a great variation to my arnie press. With what you said about the neck muscles, your absolutely spot on. In the last 4 years i have pulled my neck so many times but i didnt know i had this condition. Again i thank you so much for putting this video up

      Arron Joseph I’m happy you found this at a timely point in your life! Thank you for sharing that. Aside from a very small minority of cases, movement quality and relative strength are the best defenses against aging poorly. So keep up the work ethic and stay in the gym. You’re still capable of over doing things, and some sight modifications may be better for your body type (like the landmine press), but don’t limit yourself. You’re not broken!

      @@chirostrength again thank you so much for your video and reply. I'm gonna keep soldiering on with some tweaks (rest is rust) I have some wear on my spine and a mild condition so I'm on the lucky side. I'm going to see some different physiotherapists around my area for advice etc with working out. I'm also going to stretch each night as when I wake up in the morning it's when I'm at my most painful. Some days are worse then others but it's something I've now got to live with. Thank you again sir 👍

      Thankyou for the great information. Not a lot out there in terms of weight lifting. I do chinups no problem. I also do deadlifts. Rhe gym is incredibly helpful and a I keep super fit. Would love to get rid of rounded shoulders and head forward posture. Not really bad but it is annoying. Is this possible?

    • @chirostrength
      @chirostrength  5 лет назад +1

      @@gaylemathews1327 I'm glad you've found success with maintaining an active lifestyle! In regards to the physical appearance of posture, it depends. Most of the time with Scheuermann's there is a bony change which leads to the posture, not soft tissue. Therefore, if the bone has already gone through a degree of anterior collapse of the vertebrae, there isn't much you can do to change this appearance. If there isn't much structural change but is more soft tissue, the posture can be corrected much more. However, when it comes to function, the important thing is maintaining as much pain free range of motion as possible and learning to load the exercises progressively and appropriately just like any good training program would do.

      I was diagnosed in my late 20's. Ironically I did get into weight training in my early 20's. I knew from my teenage years that my back wasnt right..with its ugly hump. The weight training helped a huge amount, so much that one previous boss of mine who used to say nasty things about my back...was quite shocked at the improvement.
      Depression? yeah, its hard news to take in. I felt terrible for a long time and it was like the end of the world. Yes I was angry with parents and teachers and anyone else who ought to have noticed this when I was in my teens. Thats life though, there are far worse conditions out there.

    What a great informative video! Thanks a lot, I would love to see more on Scheuermann and weight training! Are squats with weight safe?

    • @chirostrength
      @chirostrength  6 лет назад +10

      In the vast majority of cases training is completely safe is performed with proper guidance and coaching. However, like anyone else, anytime you train there is a level of risk associated with that. The bottom line though, you can become very strong and resilient to injury even with scoliosis or Scheuermann's disease. Look up "Lamar Gant". He was a world record powerlifter back in the day and had a major scoliosis.

      @@chirostrength Sorry, I have only noticed your reply now, thanks for taking the time to answer! I am thinking about starting weight training with scheuermann's but was adviced by an orthopedist not to put any kind of horizontal pressure on the spine as my discs are weaker than usual. Is there any truth in that? Should I be worried about my discs while training, or maybe use small weights only? Thanks!

    • @chirostrength
      @chirostrength  5 лет назад +2

      @@anettsahraian8365 Weight training in any context can be an injury risk especially if you go zero to 100 without guidance. I'm not aware of any studies suggesting that weight training is more of an injury risk in populations that have Scheuermann's or Scoliosis. You're not "extra fragile" but like anyone, loading up poor movement can result in injury.

    Hi Doc, I have mild SK, I've recently started at the gym and I've noticed all overhead presses really hurt my lower back the next day. Also squats, dead lifts & cables in which I have to pull directly towards me, (face pulls) etc.
    How do you reccomend I get an efficient shoulder workout in to build muscle without compromising my lower back? Love the videos

    • @Dedigitalmonk
      @Dedigitalmonk 2 года назад

      Hey Ross, Please DO NOT do squats and dead lifts, thats the worst thing you can do.. I have scheuermann too and I started with calisthenics. when I was 18 years old. Now 3 years later I have build up a strong back and now I can do fitness. My shoulder workout is: sitting lateral raise, front raise, landmine press, sitting face pulls and shrugs

    I'm confused. If I have a left lumbar curve, should I place my left side over the yoga ball and only stretch that side? Also, I have a lateral pelvic tilt/ uneven hips. If my right pelvis/hip is higher than my left but my lumbar curve is leaning towards the left, do I hold the weight on my right had?

      You're probably no more at risk than someone without scoliosis. That being said, heavy barbell bench can be hard on shoulders in general so make sure you're keeping up with your mobility!

      Assuming this isn't a recent surgery, I'd find a trusted therapist/strength coach in your area who can develop a targeted routine to help you reach your goals that's specific to you. Unfortunately I can't provide any specific advice without a detailed history/consult. Stay positive though! It's possible to live pain free even with major surgery.

      I always hate to hear about people struggling with their health. Social media can sometimes make it seem very simple and straight forward. The reality is, we all have different body types, past injuries, complicating health conditions, etc. That's why I'm always advocating for those who are struggling with their health, to find a professional who can guide them through specific plans that take these individual difference into account. Exercise is important, but it can look very different for different people. Don't Give UP
