Most men breathe every cycle in fly (except in 50 sprint), while most women breathe every other cycle. We like 2 up/1 down for women in 100 and 3 up/1 down in 200. Helps the swimmers finish stronger.
I must breathe every Butterfly stroke to get as much oxygen throughput as possible. Many videos show alternate stroke breathing, but Phelps does every stroke. Alternate stroke breathing looks more aquadynamic.
Is it just me or does anyone else feel like they generate more power when they take a breath vs when they don't breathe. Might just be in my head too lol
Not necessarily. We have found both the propulsion and frontal drag go up during the breath stroke. You won't feel the drag but you will feel the propulsion from your hands and feet. The speed of the swimmer with and without the breath is about the same. The efficiency and stroke rate is better without breathing. Thus, don't breathe in the 50 meter sprint!
@@theraceclub tears are coming when I read/hear something like that (even 5/1 crowl is very hard for me to keep longer than 25 meters). I know everything can be developed, this too, but how many years it will take...
At least in the 100 events, it does. Males produce lactate at a higher rate and women typically train more aerobically than men. That often means that women need to breathe less for that event.
In the 200 IM I prefer to breathe was less like probably only 5 breaths on the first 50.. but on the IM it’s more every three. I don’t like breathing 😂😂😂
Breathing in Butterfly is NOT easy. Apparently my chin is a good 6 inches off the water when I breathe but it feels "ontop" Is there a breathing drill that actually works. I've tried them all since I'm a teacher myself. 1 arm butterfly, nope (because the breath is to the front) Arms by side dolphin - Nope becuase the timing is wrong so actually makes it worse. Breathing patterns - Don't make a difference if the timing is wring in the first place. I find coaches don't actually do much. The chances are the swimmer could do all four strokes before they joined the club (because they have to be able to in most clubs). Surely there must be breathing practice that works
Videos like this make me so nostalgic for the club swim days from when I was a kid
Get back and swim Masters!
i guess Im kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good website to stream new series online ?
@Zakai Benson Flixportal :)
@Ameer Zain thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it!!
@Zakai Benson Glad I could help =)
I prefer to breath in each cycle. I’m not professional therefore I don’t focus on my speed but the correct execution and form.
Good!
Me too😄. Butterfly breath is very hard. But I think the correct form is important.
When you get tired. Side breath in fly fix the undulating problem. Continue front will make u slower.
For swimmers who over elevate the shoulders with a front breath, side breathing can be a good option.
l recently got knew with your channel really increadible
Thank you! Hope you will subscribe to our membership www.theraceclub.com. We have over 300 great videos on Lane 3!
I’m old, so we were taught either every stroke or every other stroke, and could vary on which lap you’re on too.

Alternate stroke breathing looks more aquadynamic.
Particularly for men, breathing every cycle on 100 m and 200 m butterfly is preferred method.
I think it depends also on how you master your technique
I have a race and I hope this helps me
We do too!

Yeah but that feeling never last’s very long for me especially in a 100

Thanks alot
Most welcome
I personally take a breath every other stroke and I feel less tired compared to when I take a breath every stroke.
Some men do, like Caeleb, but it could mean that you are over-elevating for the breath. I personally like the oxygen.
You gotta breathe like you mean it.
Yes, indeed. Especially in buttefly.
Breathing out with mouth or nose?
Breathe with your mouth!
@@theraceclub thank you. 🙏
How does your gender determine the amount of breathing you do?
At least in the 100 events, it does. Males produce lactate at a higher rate and women typically train more aerobically than men. That often means that women need to breathe less for that event.

You may not feel like you need to breathe on the fly, but you should, anyway.

I like the butterfly skate drill for low profile breath. You can find it on our videos at www.theraceclub.com. Lane 3 membership.
@@theraceclub yeh i know that one. Unfortunately you need flippers/fins though. Or be a good club swimmer already.
I can butterfly 25m without breathing and swim better
Fly and Free are fastest without breathing as the stroke rate can be held higher.
