  • At The Race Club we don’t believe that one style of freestyle swimming technique is enough for a swimmer to be successful at every distance. We want our swimmers to walk away from our camps and private sessions with at least two or three different freestyle swimming techniques that the swimmer can utilize depending on his events. Coaches Gary Hall Sr and Devin Murphy take our campers through the Three Styles of Freestyle - Shoulder Driven, Hip Driven and Hybrid Freestyle. In this video we showcase each freestyle swimming technique as our coaches discuss characteristics that are unique to each style in order to help the swimmers perfect each swimming techique and finally sets that will reinforce each style. Subscribe to our video subscription as we will explore in depth each of these 3 freestyle swimming techniques and give you drills, dryland exercises and more to master each swim technique!

    This is excellent info makes a lot of sense. In the past, I was a little confused, as some swimmers say you need to rotate your body from hip to shoulder and glide smoothly, while the others say you need to drive from your shoulder and keep your hip calmer. Now it is clear. Both are right. You just need to pick up the right tool when needed.

    Thank you! You helped find back/being comfortable with what feels natural to me. I was swimming as a kid /teenager in a club for more than a decade, but never since then then until more recently. I watched all the tutorials on YT to make sure I get technique right, but they all teach hip driven - which felt odd, unnatural to me, and I was desperately slow but what felt natural to me in the pool was seemingly not the right technique so I forced myself to work on hip driven style. I never heard of the term "hybrid style" before watching your video today, but it all made sense and is what I have been taught as a kid to swim, actually. So went to the pool today, put it into practice, muscle memory kicked in, I let be what is and I swam as well and fast as not in twenty years. Thank you!

    This is the first time I come across a solid definition of what hybrid/horse/loping/galop freestyle is. I was searching for this information for a while. Thank you!
    I have seen Katie Ledecky using it with a two beat kick on the 800m free and almost all males competing on 200m free are using it now (because Phelps used it?). Anyway it’s seems great for those kind of middle distances and the rythm and breathing look more simple.

      Not sure who the first to use hybrid freestyle was, but I can trace it back to at least as far as Matt Biondi in the late 80's. Phelps took it to another level and nearly all elite swimmers have adopted it for the 200 m free. Some for the 100 and some for the 400 and up.

    This is a great video, I’ve been teaching this for 15 years and you’re the only other place I’ve seen talk about the three freestyle forms.
    The only point I disagree on is that I don’t believe shoulder driven is the actual fastest potential freestyle. I think we will see significant increases in speed from hybrid freestylers now that hip drive freestyle is normalised at a young age.

    • @theraceclub
      @theraceclub  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching! It will be interesting to see if anything significantly shifts. We think moving towards a hip driven rotation (at least in sprint) limits the effectiveness of coupling your pull with the recovery arm. But in 100's and up, those who do hybrid well (as you pointed out - Popovici, Phelps) have definitely proven that hybrid technique is more than just a viable option.

    Thank you..

    • @theraceclub
      @theraceclub  3 года назад +4

      The arm on the breath side of the stroke recovers faster than on the non-breath side. That hand then pushes forward first, then downward, like in hip-driven free. The non-breathing hand presses downward immediately after entry to help facilitate the breath, more like a shoulder-driven free technique.

    Feel free to correct me but I think it’s about when to start pulling
    In hip driven you start to pull when your recovery arm passes the shoulder blades and approaches head or some coaches calls it as front quadrant
    In shoulder driven you start to pull when your opposite hand is done with pulling or when the opposite hand exists the water
    Hybrid is when you pull with shoulder driven on the non breathing side and hip driven on the breathing one.

  • @snowpants2212

    It would be elegant if we could explain the hybrid in terms of doing hip-driven with one arm and shoulder-driven with the other. But this might confuse some swimmers, because (1) the best examples of the hybrid style (like Phelps's freestyle) involve the breathing arm catching up to the non-breathing arm, whereas (2) the allegedly "shoulder-driven" (non-breathing) arm cannot go immediately into the pull phase (as shoulder-driven style normally requires) while also waiting for the breathing arm to catch up. How to reconcile (1) and (2)? Perhaps what makes the non-breathing arm "shoulder-driven" (despite its delayed pull) is that it lacks the hip-driven extension out front that takes place with the breathing arm. Contrast Sun Yang's hip-driven stroke, where the hips *do* drive the non-breathing arms's extension out front (while it waits for the breathing arm to catch up) with Phelps's more hybrid stroke, where the non-breathing arm stays more locked into the shoulder socket (without a full, hip-driven extension out front) while it waits for the breathing arm to catch up.

    • @theraceclub
      @theraceclub  Год назад +2

      The biggest difference between a shoulder driven freestyle technique and a hybrid technique (besides the asymmetry) is the stroke rate. With a hybrid free, the non-breathing hand begins to press down immediately (like a shoulder driven technique), but the breathing hand recovers so fast that the non-breathing hand is in front of the shoulder when the breathing hand hits the water. The cycle time of hybrid free is the same on both arms, because the non breathing hand presses more out the back (and the hip turns) and recovers more slowly, while the breathing arm pushes out the front (like a hip driven freestyler). Hope this clarifies!

    Is there a risk teaching different styles to younger swimmers and confusing them while focusing on a single style that suits them best be better investment of time and energy?

    • @theraceclub
      @theraceclub  4 года назад +4

      Good question. Most young swimmers are doing 50's and 100's and should be taught shoulder driven freestyle technique for that. Once they start doing 200's or longer, they can be introduced to hybrid and faster hip-driven techniques. I have several 10 year old swimmers using hybrid freestyle for their 200 freestyle events.

  • @robohippy
    @robohippy 3 года назад +1

    Well, I do understand the mechanical differences between the 'hip driven' and the 'shoulder driven' variations of the freestyle that you are showing here, but remember from viewing this the first time you put it up some time ago, I don't really understand the terminology. Maybe I am being peculiar. I guess, to me, it comes down to the argument about 'do the hips drive the body rotation, or do the shoulders drive the body rotation. I am in the shoulders camp on that one. For sure, in the sprints and shorter distances, you need to be in a lower gear/high stroke count for speed, and in the longer distances you are in a higher gear/lower stroke rate. As near as I can tell, it also seems that when sprinting, you use less body rotation than you do in distance swimming, as well as the shorter arm pulls. This doesn't seem to change the basic mechanics of the stroke as the body rotation still seems to come from anchoring off of the pulling arm. Not sure if I am making this clear or not.
    My overarm side stroke uses that hybrid style of stroke, and it seems natural to do it that way. I heard it called the 'loping' style a while back.
    Our pools opened again this week. Only one swimmer per lane. You have to call in and reserve a lane. Time slots are 50 minutes, which gives them 10 minutes to disinfect chairs and ladder rails. You can't come into the pool until 10 minutes before your reserved time. I was able to get 2 consecutive time slots. They are very concerned about a specific number of people in the pool at one time. Swim team comes in at 5 AM, and again at 7 PM for their work outs, which are times when the pool is not 'officially' open. Hope it continues this way. I guess it will be like the stores and restaurants opening again, the protocol will be different from place to place...
    I was very surprised to find out that I burn far more calories in a medium effort/getting back in shape work out than I do in a heavy bike ride. I expected there to be a difference, but with medium bike ride, it takes 3 hours to equal 2 hours in the pool at medium effort. Oh, that includes hills on the bike ride...

    If your right arm is stronger than the left arm , is right arm going to be hip or shoulder driven ?

    • @theraceclub
      @theraceclub  3 месяца назад +1

      Good question. In our experience using VM technology, for example, with american record holder, Zane Grothe, who uses a hybrid freestyle technique, the peak velocities from his left and right pulling hands are almost equal. The pulling hand on the breath side uses hip driven technique, while the opposite hand uses a shoulder driven technique. We recommend trying to breath on one side, then try breathing to the other. You will likely feel better using this technique on one side compared to the other. The recovering arm on your breath side should be faster getting to the water than the non-breath side.

    • @Malz260
      @Malz260 3 месяца назад

      @@theraceclub I breath to my left and my right arm is stronger than left , so if I were to try the hybrid freestyle , my left arm should use hip driven that extends the glide and catch , while my right arm use shoulder driven by increasing tempo , on the last bit of your comment you said , the recover arm on the breathing side should be faster , that means the hip driven arm recovery arm should be faster , but isn’t the shoulder driven recovery also just as fast ?
