There is not a lake trout population in Sakakawea but that is not to say some couldn't have washed through the dam during the high water years. You can catch king salmon along the face of the dam however, especially in the fall.

Chad... We did not catch any Walleyes along the dam but you could probably find Walleyes near trout on York Island and Haxby Point which isn't far from the dam. Great trip, Peter you are always welcome in my boat!

Why do you grab them by the gills, where they breathe, if you are not keeping them?
Btw, Cisco and Lakers spawn in the mid to later fall into winter fall. That's why they are so catchable, like shooting fish in a barrel. Now the ones bleeding at the gills will be extra stressed and probably will die.
+GottaWannaDance we are gripping the gill plate to control the fish and never actually touch the gills.

I have fished Fort Peck all my life, move into Duck Creek or up into the Milk River Coulee, you will find great pike action or you might catch the walleye of a lifetime. The late fall is also prime time for the pike at Rock Creek and Sand Arroyo Bay. You might even get a few of those fat lakers, too.
We like to release the big fish because it takes so long for fish to get big. Lakers are a great fish to smoke but we have long days when we are on the road filming and seldom keep many fish when we are traveling.
We were trolling anywhere from ten to fifteen feet using ten pound Bionic Braid. Will have to give Duck Creek and Milk River Coulee a look.

Fort Peck is great water. There are no fishing lodges but there are motels, communities and campgrounds that cater to anglers. A great resource we use when traveling to this area is Montana's Missouri River Country, www.missouririver.visitmt.com Good luck if you get there, it is an incredible place.

You can find lakers through the ice around the Hell Creek Area. The trout do get a little bit more dispersed in the winter.
Fort Peck reservoir is huge & the storms can come up quickly w/ fast winds & large swells- I've seen some scary stuff out here; you need a V hull boat at least 16' or better out here that can handle large swells & high winds; the reason I run an Arima 19' Sea Ranger is because of this...!
Bass boats are a definite no-no!

That big one is an Arctic Char.
+cdm We wish there were Arctic Char in Fort Peck but it was a male laker in fall spawning color splendor.
Can i take home fish caught in this lake??? Or i must give it way. Can u explain about fishing laws of this lake? Im not American.
+MerlinMoorlo you can keep some fish on Fort Peck but we recommend releasing the big fish and keeping the smaller fish. A four to five pound lake trout is a great eating fish.
