Back in the 60's upper peninsula in Michigan we caught droves of jumbo. Small ones were 15" , big ones were 18" and 19" non stop. They would bite the gold hooks right off the line. No bait ... Gold hooks !
Just wanted to update this review. Year 4, with a bit of sharpening I'm still thrilled with this Auger! This is an excellent Auger. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxe0I-fnTUByahTCyStrIBXsesSkQJKn8n It splits to 1/2 size for storage in the warm months and easily assembles for winter use. I can cut holes in less than a minute by and really don't feel the need to ever adapt this to use with a drill. It cuts easily with the included blades (which can be sharpened or replaced as needed) and has held up extremely well through last season, and now for the first cuts of this season. I do recommend this to anyone who asks, and personally prefer this over powered augers. These are quiet, still quite fast, lighter, and don't risk spilling chemicals into our waterways. I plan to do a lot of fishing this year through the ice, thanks to this trusty Auger. The 8" diameter is great for fishing pike through the ice as well.
Have been trying to access and ice fish this spot for a few years now, always frustrating driving by a dozen times when the weather isn't favorable. Hopefully this will be the year.
A normal day on the ice I drill at least 100 holes. I give a hole max 2 minutes without bites. Perch are at the bottom like 95% of the winter. At winter I search for structure close to deep parts. Every thing from 1 feet to 30 feet is good water. Drop the spoon very slow. If no bite then wack it in the bottom hard five times and pull up 1 feet and hold it still. Sorry for bad English. I am from Sweden.
Nice video Jason. Glad you’ve put these videos together because they are very informative. Keep them coming. What brand topper do you have for your rig?
I noticed you use an open loop knot to tie your jigs on. Is there a reason for this preference? I was always of the school of thought that you wanted your jig to remain horizontal.
I use a palomer knot a lot with jigs but I like to use a heavier fluorocarbon leader when fishing places where there are walleyes and pike and find that the small jigs don’t have good action or hang straight with the heavier line and bigger knot so I use a loop knot with the heavier leaders.
@@JasonMitchellOutdoors I want to buy one for ice fishing but don’t know what to buy.Do they come with the ice fishing transducer and a case? How do you know which flash is a fish and which is bottom
I will check but it is a 24 volt brushless. I usually carry about five or six batteries and always have one on the charger running off an inverter in my machine or pickup.
I would say yes but with that cold of temps, you are going to want base layers as everybody has a different motor and it really depends on how active you are.
There have been good bites on the Main Lake, East Bay and Black Tiger Bay, East Devils this winter so far. Many of the bites have been deep, deeper than 30 feet. Be willing to drill a lot of holes or find fish. If you are beginning merry to ice fishing, make sure to spend some time on the walleye and pike as they can sometimes be easier to find relating to structure or shorelines.
brown jersey gloves and wear biggest parka they make. hide hands and reel handle in sleeve cuff, gloves get wet let dry on sled and put on another pair works great. plus mickeys mouse boots if u can find them

So true about certain lakes being hot one year and junk the next definitely holds true in ny for sure

Not sure on topper. Got it from Moritz Marine in Mandan. Doesn’t say on the topper.
I was the 100th thumbs up!👍🏽 love every episode
What are your thoughts on the pistol auger setup vs something like an ION?

Random question, what model of Dewalt drill do you use? I have the 996 and go through batteries pretty quick. I wonder if the torque is too low.

Are the orange ice armor float suits warm in 0° or under temperatures

Love your videos can you show that knot you tie your jigs with.
Just use the old Rapala loop knot.
is that the 7.5" k-drill? cuts like butter!
Yes
True….. lakes can be so different every year……
Bought a jason mitchell rod and was perch fishing. And it the end snapped on a little dinky perch.
If you ever have any issue with a rod, contact Clam’s customer service and they will take care of you.
@Jason Mitchell Outdoors Alright, thanks for the reply.
Nice fishing! why are perches yellow in the US?
Cuz they are yellow perch, and you lucky ducks get to fish massive common or European perch which I’m guessing is a lot of fun
@@kabbythedog9409 in our rivers, perch is light or very dark, but there are few large ones
@@Hunter_from_Yakutia dang, we have good perch on my lake but 13-14 is an anomaly where do the pictures of huge European perch come from
We have yellow and white perch in USA.
