Great video John!im from Ottawa myself. Some good little spots around here for some jumbos, but never fished lady Simcoe! Glad I found ya, awesome video
This is so helpful!!! I'm still learning to fish, and this was vastly more useful information than most of the big fishing RUclipsrs out there. More like this please! (Maybe walleye and crappie for dummies?)
Hi John! PHENOMENAL underwater footage- great video on my favorite species! I’ll be up Sunday night through Thursday. First trip in two years and I’m pumped! Staying on Duclos and will be fishing Woods and Chicken Bays.
Excellent video and a wealth of information/knowledge. Thank you for sharing! I grew up in Sweden, ice fishing for large, European yellow perch. Now living just outside of Boston, I reconnected with my childhood passion of ice fishing again this season, after several decades of living and working in warm countries. I have been out on the ice every chance I've gotten this year. Nothing better. Fishing your Canadian perch waters would be an absolute thrill for me. I would LOVE to try my homemade Swedish jigs, lures and techniques and on Lake Eire or Simcoe. I'll definitely plan a trip next season, thinking the train has already left the station for this one. Thanks again for a great video!
Greatings from Sweden. I fish perch at least 200 days of the year. About 100 of them from the ice. I agree you have to move around a lot in the middle of the winter. My go to bait for ice fishing is a big chromed spoon with a 25mm (1") long chain to a size 6 treble hook with a orange colored plastic bead. It works 9 out of 10 days. And it keeps the small perch of.
I’m happily married to my wife. But I think I love you. That was an amazing video. I learned more about perch fishing in 11 minutes 15 seconds then I have my 45 years on this planet. Please let me know anytime I can join you fishing.
Been a subscriber for a while now still putting a great content, thank you for your efforts I would love to go fishing with you sometime on the east side of Simcoe
WOW! simply wonderful and informative. Just getting into ice fishing, kids are stoked and now so am I. Definitely will invest in an underwater camera. Any suggestion on augers? Hand or drill driven. I'll be on lake simcoe, this winter, so any advice is welcome :) Thanks :)
I like the K-drill 8.5 inch. It's east to get a drill adapter, can be used for any species, and is very light. As for a hand drill, I like the Fin Bore. Just make sure to keep it sharp.
Hi there,Evening/morning John sir. Very nice & imformative video. Thanks for sharing. New subscriber. If I may ask,Where did you get the johnson slim fish?
@@timeonthewaterca I mean any means of killing them instantaneously, like a club to the brain. I've found that they can cling to life for a frightening amount of time out of the water so I dispatch them with a club
@@timeonthewaterca Yeah I get that but what I'm asking is for the fish that you do keep, if you've considered an instant dispatching method like a club vs asphyxiation on the ice
Were taking a trip to misery bay next weekend. Is it really as easy as just going out and catching them. Or is there alot of work to find quality fish ?
If they spawn in the bay it shouldn't be that difficult. I'm sure there is some local knowledge that can be found in fishing forums that could give you a general idea.
Does the first ice period shift later when ice has taken a lot longer to form on lake simcoe this year? Also what is your go to colour for the Berkley nymph?
@@timeonthewaterca thought I’d change it up for once on Saturday and head out to Sibbald point but didn’t see a single perch. Went to 35 fow and worked our way to 27, 22, 18, 14 and 12. Didn’t see a single fish LOL. I had a cam and sonar with me as well. Was so baffled! My first time ever not seeing a single fish.
As I age I no longer take offense at the notion of "for dummies" in the past my ego would scoff at for dummies stuff. Nowadays lol.....I embrace and enjoy a simplified, plain tutorial. Call me lazy or call me wise.......just don't call me late to the fishing hole
Hey John, do you start shallow then go deep. At this time of year what's the ticket. Some days I do well and some days it's tough. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong
@john whyte interesting! i was thinking you clamp it on the aqua vu. how do you attach? ive been using a telescopic painter pole (20 foot long) and hard-mounting both the gopro and aqua vu so they aim the same direction but your way sounds better
The perch in North America (what you call yellow perch) have some differences to their European relatives. The ones here are way too bony to eat, though they make good fishing.
Nobody knows more about fishing than this legend.
As usual with your work, the underwater footage is superb! Really nice-looking Yellow Perch. 👍
Thank you
Great info that I haven't heard elsewhere. Thanks!

Not only that you are willing to share your knowledge but the way videos are edited is just perfect. It was pleasure watching it.

Really like your narrative through out the video. Neat underwater footage. Life long ice fishing yet sure can be challenging!
I’ve just discovered your channel! This is great. Your videos are very educational as well as resourceful. Tight lines!

Are the perch there the same species?
@@timeonthewaterca No it's their green cousins Perca fluviatilis.
You are my hero
Thank you for the update..
Wish it was better for you folks.
Miigwetch, simple but honest and effective. Thank you for encouraging to release what you won't eat
this is a solid video and gives folks a ton of options to try!
Great job there old man john✌
Great tips for fishing perch. I use the 3 lure approach. Jigging Rapala first then spoon then micro tube the color of the scuds
Very informative, enjoyed the information around tides and the moon too.
This is outstanding thanks from oneida lake NY
Great video!
Really good information!!

I grew up being told bluegill and other small sunfish are called perch. Then I went to Wisconsin and actually caught perch. Not the same. 😂😂

Great video!
Very informative, thank you!!
Great video
I needed this lol! Thank you for this awesome video.
Can you do fishing for dummies for whitefish and Lakers also?
For whitefish, I found using a jig with a spawn egg on. Jig it about 12" off the bottom.

all the ice here in metro detroit just melted past week. maybe a late freeze will save tje season
It's not a good year for ice.
Grea video!!
Really helpful video. Ty! Do you know if there's a blood worm hatch in Presque Isle Bay in Erie?
There typically is in most lakes.
Great information and underwater footage . What's the camera that you use hope too see some more jumbos tight lines 🎣
The camera in the video is an Aqua-Vu HD Quad cam

I bought it up here in Orillia at Tromblys. But I think Cabelas still have them
Hi there,Evening John sir. Ok thanks,Will check there or see if i can find Tromblys website if they have one.
Excellent video and incredible footage. Have you considered dispatching fish that you keep, or is there a reason that you don't?

How come I rarely see guys fish with wigglers. Lots of time I don't get it to the bottom. It gets hit before it gets down there ?
Do you ever fish little and big cedar?
Yes. Mostly in the spring

H John what is your experience with ice fishing Lake Erie Perch in early March in long point bay ?
No experience at Long Point but may make the trip this year.
Does the first ice period shift later when ice has taken a lot longer to form on lake simcoe this year? Also what is your go to colour for the Berkley nymph?
First Ice generally lasts until the lake is frozen over and the ice is well established. My go to color is chartreuse
Hey John, are you noticing that the Perch are in deeper water due to the long stretch of cold weather? I’m really good at finding dinks. Lol
I don't think they ever went shallow. I'm still fishing 20+ every day. But I did find some in 12 ft the other day

Very cool interesting info; Where is this? The ice is ready to fish on?
Lake Simcoe
Hey John, do you start shallow then go deep. At this time of year what's the ticket. Some days I do well and some days it's tough. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong

Gopro 11

It attaches to the Aqua-Vu cable

A friend made me a plastic clamp.
Which part of the lake do u fish most John
Mostly the north end.
The perch in North America (what you call yellow perch) have some differences to their European relatives. The ones here are way too bony to eat, though they make good fishing.
But European perch grow much larger.
@@timeonthewaterca They can grow to an OK size here in Ireland and they're just about in every river and lake.
What size johnson slinfish spoon and where can I purchase these
2.5 inch
Can I clean and cook the fish on ice? Going thus weekend
Sure. Why not
👍
Cooks bay 5 feet of water
Yes there is always shallow fish as well.
