    I am happy to see a great video, from someone I happen to know. I am a Huntington Library & Gardens volunteer over 15years. I and many others helped to repot several 1000's of orchids that were donated to the Huntington. I have enjoyed going to the gardens with my Mom since I was a child over 60yrs ago.....

    In hot humid areas of Florida, they also thrive without pots, hanging from trees. Of course it can get really cold in some areas in winter, so I’d protect them from the cold.

      I always just bought them from Publix 😏in Florida, and it would always die😅😅

    • @amandacook8298
      @amandacook8298 10 месяцев назад +1

      That's because Publix employees are not trained in caring for plants. 8f you purchase from a nursery that cares for plants for a living, then you would have likely had a better outcome.

I left them alone mostly but took them out of the ugly cheap moss and plastic and just used orchid bark and soil and put them back with out the plastic and don’t wYer them for weeks at a time just mist spray and orchid food during the time they say you should and they bloomed back more beautiful and even more blooms growing multiple roots and vines now ❤😊

    i am completely dumbfounded. i was taught to always plant orchids in transparent pots and never to cover the whole root system with bark/soil (especially so densely), because it’s the roots specifically that need sunlight.. was all of that wrong? was i lied to? 😅

    • @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep
      @WaterspoutsOfTheDeep 11 месяцев назад +11

      In a sense yes. The photosynthesis from their roots isn't that much and it's better to just pot them up like here. The exception is warm humid areas then you want it way more open. Somewhere dry and warm like the desert you pretty much need most orchids in moss otherwise they dry out to fast. It's all the environment. There are some leafless orchids that are just roots for example those you would of course need exposed to light lol.

    • @Denuhm
      @Denuhm 10 месяцев назад +5

      You should as a rule. It assumes however you’re in the correct environment for the plant.
      The root photosynthesis isn’t for the plant but rather the fungus that lives with it. These orchids are epiphytes.
      When a plant is healthy however aerial roots will grow and leave the pot by themselves.
      I don’t know this channel nor this person’s experience, so I can’t speak as to their success rates, I would still be potting my phalaenopsis in a clear pot.

      I understand the clay pebbled and orchid potting mix that also include the bark and moss. Under I put the mix in the roots I put the pebbles and covered with moss that came with the mix. They are doing great! Now I didn't pot in clear pot instead I did the ceramic with holes and no they aren't firmly potted. I have them a bit loose but their happy ❤

    In the high desert West of Utah where I live the relative humidity is so low. If you don't use some sphagnum moss or coconut coir chips in your orchid mix it'll stay so dry you'll have to water every other day.

    I have an Orchid that I've repotted twice *because* it seems no matter the size of pot I use the little bugger keeps eventually falling over/out. It's a rescue from overwatering and lost a *lot* of it's roots. (it's been growing some new aerial roots, but not very many into soil (or so it seems). I use Orchid Bark mix. Any tips so this fellow doesn't grow legs and walk away?

      If it's just in a plastic pot and top heavy put that plastic pot in a ceramic cover pot or wide vase or anything. Also can use a stake or two on both sides cut short just to keep it secure in the pot

    Hi. what soil do you use for planting?

    • @LadyAlriandi
      @LadyAlriandi Год назад +7

      you can use what is best suited for your climate. This example is using bark and perlite but you can use charcoal (do not use any BBQ charcoal,) bark, coconut husk, moss, etc as long as its not compacted. THese are plants are epiphytes that grow in the trees, not the soil. However there is some that are terrestial and have different requirements. This one is a epiphyte
      Many phalaenopsis plants are compressed into spaghum moss in the stores like Walmart etc, that they actually suffocate and their roots rot, so its best to repot them asap. The plant will not only survive but bloom again and again.

    I am a newbie in an orchid community, I love them, I already killed 2 unfortunately because of wrong tips. Just before this video I was watching another one where said water them every 3 days, here says almost once month. I am really getting mad, everyone says complete different thing one say do not re-pot after purchasing other say immediately re-pot, one says water regularly other says once a month. This more difficult than taking care of a human baby.

      If youre looking for (even more) advice, I’ve had an orchid for a good while, and I’ve found that the key to watering orchids is looking at the roots. Vibrant green roots mean the orchid is sufficiently watered, and if the roots are more grey and dull that means it’s time to water them again. After I learned what to look for in the roots and made sure to check them regularly, my orchid really thrived and I quickly saw new growth. I also didn’t repot my orchid when I bought it if that also helps. Still, I definitely recommend looking at examples of orchid roots and what they could mean if you’re still open to take care of an orchid!

    • @meystir
      @meystir 2 месяца назад

      You either have to water it more often (limp and wrinkly leaves means it lacks water) or it might have to few roots to contain enough moisture. If you know it’s not because of watering frequency, the best option is probably to check how healthy the root system is.

  • @orchidquest
    @orchidquest 11 месяцев назад +2

    How often you water an orchid in spaghnum moss entirely depends on the environment you have. If you live in a humid environment, you might water once a month. But if you live in air conditioning, which conditions the air to eliminate humidity, this isn't true. If you look be in an arid climate, this really isn't true. Finally, it depends how much you water your orchid each time you water.

    I don’t want these things in the first place but I can’t just throw them in the trash when they are relatively healthy. They keep blooming and living forever…..how long do they take to naturally die??
    I’ve had them for 10 years and I’d like for them to go to plant heaven already!! I‘ve repotted twice, water & spray lightly with fertilizer once a week and put them outside (in bright shade) for 6 months as soon as the night temperatures stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
    I’ve had people ask for them (because I dislike them so much) but nobody that I trust who will be a better caregiver than me, so I’m stuck with these things! I have forbidden my entire family from giving me houseplants ever again - WAY too much work and these suckers live FOREVER. Some I’ve had for 20 years.; it’s out of control. Yes, I’m a very reluctant plant parent to say the least! LOL
