- This video describes the state of a broken upper mount on a shock absorber. Video does not go into detail about fixing it, or repairing the worn part, but does describe the noise associated with a failure of this type as it has a distinctive sound. When This happens, spring failure, steering suspension problems can happen quickly.
Vehicle in video is a 2000 Chevy Venture. GM makes a number of models of mini-van on this platform, Oldsmobile Silhouette, Pontiac Trans Sport, and Pontiac Montana. Chevy Uplander, and it's siblings may have suspensions, and strut configurations.
Nice find. I have had a similar noise on my Honda CRV and thought it was the anti-sway bar too. Once in a while I would feel it more and hear it. This makes the most sense. Thank you for finding this problem and posting it.
Just had my sway bar link and bushings replaced and the sound is still there. Smh. Also have a CRV.
That's exactly my noise!! You were spot on, took it to the dealership to diagnose it and it is a bad strut, that was supposedly replaced in March after an accident... Thanks for this video and the explanation why it would only make the noise weighted vs. Up in the air and no weight to bear on tires .

Same noise in my cars front left. When i step on the gas it has that crackling noise. When when i let go of gas and weight shifts it does it aswell. Definitely struts/shocks
First time I heard this noise turning my steering wheel, I thought something broke that would leave the car immobilized. I drove home doing 20 mph, thinking I was lucky I was moving😂 it hasn't made the sound again but I plan to fix it this spring. Fingers crossed it makes it
Very smart. I just went to the mechanic, he initially said it was the power steering, then when he looked at it more he found out it was the strut.

My noise is very similar - you can both hear it and feel it when it occurs (it's quite scary because it sounds & feels like something is popping or falling off your car). I can equate it to the sound of a bass drum. Mine started only when hitting bumps, but now can occur just when turning or any time.

Did you ever find out what it was? I have been getting the same noise loud pop or drum noise. I took my nissan to the mechanic and he said that I needed to replace the strut mounts but that the he couldn’t find any online that were selling just the strut mounts for my specific car and that I need to replace the struts entirely which cost around 335 and 460 for labor 800 total, when I found the upper strut mount for my car and they were only $40 for both.
Check the top nut in the engine bay. Grease can be added to lubricate the bearing on most cars. But you look to have a damaged yellow pivot disk already along with lots of rust I doubt the shop broke a tie rod as they wear out too. Where is the shot of the old strut and the worn parts?

My shocks are making a good amount of noise my mechanic says it's safe to drive but the noise makes me so nervous making me feel like something's wrong with it is it worth the repair just for Peace of mind

I'm wondering how to diagnose what all needs replaced...just the top mount, mount and strut, or the whole assembly. I definitely have the clunking noise. It came then left for awhile (meanwhile new wheel bearings and drive shaft [it actually broke] on Michigan roads). Now the sound is back. Finally found out what it is, but inflation is a B. 🤣🤣🤣

Same sound I have. Did all 4 and the last one I did the front passenger is doing the same. I’m thinking I misaligned the spring when I loosen the middle bolt compelety and felt the spring move around a little.

Thanks for the video. Could this noise be caused by the struts/mounts when taking off from a stop or going very slowly WITHOUT turning? My car makes no noise during the cold winters but as soon as its over 50 degrees f, the front end pops at every stop. On a really hot day or after a drive, the pop is so significant it actually shakes the steering wheel a bit. Mechanics just give me random guesses. I cant find anyone who can figure it out!
Could be a cv axel or possible one of the bushing or ball joints is bad
The pop for me was the very bottom of my front drivers side coil spring. It broke, about 6 inches sheered off. It was in the bottom turn of the coil. It was so far down, the lip of the little cradle/cup for the coil hid the broken piece. It was rubbing on the broken piece when turning, creating a very loud metallic snap noise. I had to take my phone & get up in there on video mode, & point my camera with flash on, down into that cradle (not totally sure what it's called, looks like a bowl for the strut/spring to sit in! Lol). Finally you could see it! The issue is every time the mechanics had it up above face level to look at the spring. Looked mostly ok looking up at it. Couldn't see the break at the bottom unless you took the wheel off, or stuck a camera or mirror in. Now considering my symptoms the Honda stealership SHOULD have taken the wheel off to look. But just letting u know if you're still having this issue. The noise was quite disturbing, & I felt so happy when I found it on my own! But it was such a loud metal noise like two pieces being forced off of each other when turning!
@@victoriagirdler4795 your honda makes strut noise to! Yea..my 16 accord sport clunks while turning going slow..stealership put it on a lift too..didnt take off the wheel.. And said maybe its binding needa grease..i dont really know he told me..and to come back if its worse..pshh..i spent 100$ jis for him to tell me that..there is a TSB..mine didnt fall under this..but should have..still tryen to figure it all out..and get them to fix it
@Edubb so since my comment 9 months ago, I had the bad springs replaced, BUT the new ones bind terribly! I didn't have a lot of $ so took it to a guy who only wanted to use quick struts, instead of a widow maker to save my struts since the only thing broken was a spring. I now regret not paying a little more to have them done properly. Springs aren't made consistently, ESPECIALLY the aftermarket & "quick assembly" crap. I know someone who works in car parts. He said springs get past tests all the time when they're just a bit off. It's not enough to cause all out failure, but enough to be annoying & potentially cause premature wear of the assembly & parts directly related in terms of motion. But they release them, & the worst get thrown into quick struts. Yours may be too tight, need grease, not compressed right, etc. I feel like it's a common honda issue! I've given up on the binding to be honest. When my struts or springs eventually need replaced again, I'll find someone confident in using a widow maker! Oh just so u know, Im not a mechanic so not 100% sure of this, but I've heard when they raise cars up, sometimes that can cause shocks to seize up. My ride got worse for several reasons all related to these damn springs!
@Edubb you can see spring binding if u have someone turn your wheel while u get down & look up. If they're not turning smoothly at the same rate as the wheel, they're most likely binding. Not sure if u have the OEM springs or quick struts, but it may be something as minor as having someone (besides a dealership!) Adjust them. The dealers are useless. I took mine back immediately after purchase because of the issues with noise & ride. They swore nothing was wrong with my suspension, but also didn't take the wheels off! They raised it, & up too high to actually see the broken end on the very bottom of the spring. The tire blocked the view! I was under a warranty I bought, so of course they didn't want to admit a broken spring, to have to repair it! Fucking scammers! Yea, I kept hearing it, it became a rattle, & finally stuck my hand under & pulled the broken piece out. The guy I took it to while annoying that he used quick struts, did say it should've been obvious to any tech, & that with how badly rusted the sheared ends were, it had been broken for at least a year. So the dealership totally knew! Don't ever trust them!
Seeing how much more solid the strut is than the top mount I would guess the strut had been changed and the top mount reused at some point.
But is the strut broken,or the shock itself??
It looks and sounds like it was the trust bearing that had broken completely. They are often not very well lubed or sealed. I have replaced a few and they all have been rusted inside, so I have opened up the new ones and they all were half full or less grease inside. So I packed then full with Marine grease that is very sticky and made to repel sea water. So perfect for protecting slow moving bearings from the moist and salty invoriment.
To check for upper mount play just jack up the front with wheel on and use a long 2x4 and a short one under to to lift/rock the wheel/strut/strutmount up and down..

Do you use the short one as a fulcrum and the long one for a lever under the tire?
Question - should the coil spring be turning at all on a mcpherson strut set up even if there is no noise?
yes the coil spring should turn but should not

My daughters Holden barina ( chevy Aveo) bearings are perfect. Car drove beautifully. No clunks over bumps only the ridiculous high speed bumps top strut bushings! Yet it passed a road worthy certificate! Dodgy mechanic in Australia. Subbed and liked 👍 cheers from Australia
Sorry youve had bad luck with your pile of garbage venture van, my venture van is a 99 with 340k miles, its been a great van. My experience with most vehicles is people just dont take of them like they should, i love my venture van.

This is very helpful! Bought my car from a shitty Bronx dealer and they claimed to not know the issue and prolly sprayed it with silicone to put a bandaid on it. Literally been driving this car for almost two years needa all shocks replaced ASAP

I can see the play in my strut mount under the hood by having someone pushing and pulling the top of the wheel. 2010 Santa Fe. Hopefully I don't have to replace the whole strut.

A mechanic replaced the struts on my car, and soon after, I started to hear a similar noise (popping / clunking ). I took the car back to him twice. He (supposedly) looked at it and couldn't find the problem. I hear it coming from the passenger side front end when I make sharp and fast turns. A periodic clunk clunk clunk sound. Faster, I go faster, it sounds. Sharp and slow turns don't produce any sound (or very light, and I don't hear it). Right turns sharp and slow or fast don't produce any sound either. It is not the cv joint. I have had cars with cv joint issues. I am familiar with that sound. I also hear the sound when I go over deep potholes. Any ideas? My car is old but I don't want to buy a new car yet :( could it be the same issue as the one you have shown here?
Sometimes an anti-sway bar does this? Really, if you can repeat the condition with the mechanic, or a different mechanic that does not want to fix their previous work, you'll probably find it. -Good luck!

@@hannahbunch36 I took it somewhere to get it looked at and I’ll tell you what they told me. They said there were multiple grease fittings that were snapped, a bunch of bushings were broke, and a sound that could be from the steering column. They ordered parts a few weeks ago and their still in backorder which most likely from China.

@@hannahbunch36 well when they replaced the shocks the steering wheel made a little jerk sort of this when you turned it back from steering if that makes sense.

Sorry to say - if the spring breaks, it's really not good. Lots of times you can get someone to estimate how much the repair will cost you for little/no cost. Nobody wants to estimate how far away from catastrophe your car is, but an opinion is an opinion.
After changing the sway bar link (leak), then outer tie rod (leak), then bushing (OEM 13 years and 190k miles), the clunking noise still there. After inspect the strut, the rubber cover the shock are torn and I think it is the strut creating the noise but strut has no leak. The ball joint and inner tie rod seems ok and has no play. I am going to change the struts. I hope this is it. Thanks for the video.

@@parisbaxter4996 No. The noise was caused by bad lower control arms; however, after I changed the Struts, the ride was much smoother and have better handlings. Thanks for your comments.

Super bad idea to leave this to get worse. The spring can break, and launch bits into all sorts of things. There is NEVER a good time for springs to fail. Nobody can tell you factually that your spring has not been compromised by getting hammered this way.

I believe when you leave your car unused for a while, the rust causes this problem too. Then just spraying some WD-40 would save your pocket from some greedy mechanic!

I thought I needed a new rack after replacing the pump. I hope this is the issue otherwise I'm going give up.
