Former GameStop employee here: Usually for #9 the reason a new game would be cheaper than a used game is because of an agreement GameStop had with the publisher to lower it (usually temporary for something like a sale) and weren’t legally allowed to undercut the new New price with their secondhand Used stock. If they were informed that the lower New price was permanent then they would quickly reduce the prices on the Used ones to stay competitive. Mostly because of people like me who didn’t care about my Circle of Life numbers and would push people to buying the New version because it’s clearly the better choice in that situation.
@Its Monke I mean in the black and white sense it’s a bad practice for sure, but I’d probably put that on the publishers (which we all know are bad lol) more so than GameStop in this situation (though I don’t know what sort of deal GameStop gets in return for not lowering the Used prices, if any at all). Glass half full approach is there’s some legal loophole publishers used to restrict GameStop, glass half empty is that GameStop is just straight being paid to not cut the price down.
@@bindipig1225 That’s absolutely correct, within a month you’ll be getting close to half the value of the game back if traded in...for credit. The cash value drops significantly and that’s where this misconception of getting $12 for a 2-4 week old game comes from. Usually (from my personal experience) most people trading a game in that quickly are looking to get something else, so they get about half of it paid for (or more in some cases). For Monke, a better way to view it is that $50 you spent is gone and used to play that game’s experience. If you’re done with it and GameStop wants to pay $25, you now have a new additional $25 separate from the original $50 paid. All that being said however, there are absolutely some cases where the credit offered is just insultingly low, and that’s because these titles are just overflowing in the secondhand market, a number of years old and didn’t age well, or both. The original Destiny is a good example here.
@@Viper-wc2kr This doesn’t account for being able to sell the game on Ebay at almost retail price. I’ve had too many friends that worked at Game Stop, some of them are still there decades later have move up the chain. They’re very honest with friends about the amount you get back. They’ll straight up tell you to sell it on Ebay, because there’s no reason you should have to trade in 6 games for one game, and most of the games you’ve turned in are out of stock, because they’re so popular. And, the layaway -program wasn’t even mentioned here, and it’s one of Game Stop’s biggest scams. I haven’t stepped inside of a GS in 5 years, but they were still doing it at that time.
@@aknarxus You’re absolutely right! I agree if you want to try and make your money back on a game then places like eBay give you more control and opportunity to do so. However you do have to wait for a buyer, you do have to ship it, and you do have to price it just competitively enough so it doesn’t sit and depreciate. Personally if I saw a game priced on eBay similar to a new copy at Best Buy, I’m just going to go over to Best Buy and pay to have it right now instead of having to wait for it to ship to me. Also, at least with GameStop you can take to them and they’ll pay for it instantly no matter how old it is. The best I’ve found is usually when a game is slightly aged and the seller makes more than GameStop will give, but is selling it cheaper than retailers are offering (I do this). I feel like the only reason you’d need to trade six games in for one is if they’re a bit old, just not in demand, or both. Yeah it stinks having to barter that many titles for one, but like I said before you paid your entry fee for games and had those experiences. I can’t comment on the layaway program, I haven’t worked for them in six years now but I don’t remember if we did it. We were a small store in a very affluent part of town, so most people just paid up front for their stuff.
I was going to comment this but I’m glad another former employee said this. I was one of those who got in trouble all of the time for not following the Circle of Life. My guests came back because they loved my service, not because of that. 💁🏻♀️
When I was young I had a ps2 and hundreds of games for it. Family rented out space at a flea market and I was gonna sell my games. Went to gamestop to write down prices they were selling the games I had for used (didn’t have internet access). I was like 12. Manager asks what I’m doing, I explain to him how I am going to sell my games for half of what they would and still triple my resale value based on their trade in values. The manger kicked me out of the store and banned me from coming back. The store closed a few months later.
@@drami518 cause the way I figure it was they weren’t doing great business to begin with and it irritated the manager to think that some kid was getting more business at a flea market than their store was.
@@44report22 Really? I hadn't heard that. I'm honestly surprised since in person game stores will likely become obsolete fairly soon with everything moving to digital or online purchases.
I see physical store evolving but not going away. I feel like gamestop does not want to evolve and change with the times. We need something to step up this December 1st and make gamestop work for it no more monopoly
That's so they get the money counting as income from there store instead of online. English is not my first language nor do I have a gamestop here, but that's how it works for most stores here.
I work for a British retailer and we offer a similar service for items that we don’t currently have in-stock physically but can order in from the warehouse. Would you prefer to drive back to the store and pay for it or sort out payment here-and-now and save on fuel and time driving back to the store tomorrow? It’s such a convenient service I don’t see how that’s a bad thing
Don't they sell alot of exclusive versions of games you can only buy at GameStop? That might contribute to keeping the store running, but I'm unsure of what else could help because they're an absolute rip off to buy standard edition games from. It really puts people off buying anything besides exclusives and I personally don't buy from them for that reason. Edit: Forgot to add that the exclusive/premium editions are overpriced too!
I can say I've never had any negative experiences with Gamestop the staff at my local store are always super friendly and never pushy or annoying I will always have a place in my heart for my local store
Same. I have 2 within a 30 mile radius and they're both so amazing. The workers there are super nice and aren't pushy. They helped me out so many times. I know it's not the same everywhere though
I have never had an issue at EBGames (Canadian GameStop) or even the nearby GameStops that were around, in the last couple decades. I am sure that in the States it can vary and be pretty bad.
It’s March 2005, I’m on my way home in the car as a 15 year old holding my brand new copy of Splinter Cell Chaos Theory still wrapped in plastic. I can still remember the way the light reflected off of the wet pavement as the rain continued to fall. I tear open the plastic with such joy and fervor, I open the case and my soul broke into a hundred pieces as I see no discs inside. “But how can this be?” I say as I turn to my dad in the drivers seat. I stare at the case in disbelief that my new precious game case could be empty even though it had been sealed just as the ancient Pharaohs of old sealed themselves in their tombs. A tear rolled down my cheek at that moment just as it does now as I type this. When the thought passes through my mind all these years later I still get shivers that run up my spine, I’ll never be free of that terrible night
Mannnnnnnn this was me on Christmas with Smackdown vs Raw 2007... was so excited to finally play my new game I just received with my cousins, I start my PS2 , then open my case to a huge disappointment... and when we went back they made us pay for another copy...
When I was a desperate 14 year old, I traded in like 20 games thinking I could get MGS2 and a couple used games with the money but no. It barely covered MGS2. Never traded in ever again. I'd rather keep them in the garage collecting dust.
Ironically I bet they saw you bring all those in and decided to low ball you because you had so many. Verses bringing in 1 or 2 and probably getting more back.

As a former GameStop employee a lot of these are true However the “lying about not having new games” never happened at my store while I was there and even tho we were encouraged to sell preowned, it never hurt me and I left of my own accord after 4 years
It happened at mine. This guy was a collecter of random things and would tell customers that we were out of the last collectible pop or game or shirt.....(that he wasn’t even a die hard fan of) just so he could have it over the customers.
RisXch Taisu did you get discounts if so how much and what do you thing about the terrible amount you get from used stuff and them selling it back to someone for like quadruple

My little brother worked for GameStop for about a year and the things he told me that they do are insane. His managers made him work every holiday (he’s part time and a full time college student) and the part about pushing sales is absolutely true. They made them push for V-bucks, subscription services, and pretty much any sort of rewards program or credit card they had. He had mental breakdowns working there to the point he left without notice.

I never really liked GameStop at all, always found it scummy/predatory growing up. Last time I was in a GameStop was when the ps4 slim trade up deal was a thing, and before then was a handful of times. I remember trading in my original ps4, it was in good condition and the controller too, however a small portion of the bar code in the back of the controller was unreadable, but the numbers still were, yet the guy told me he can't take the controller and instead takes away the new controller from the ps4 slim box, so I wound up with a new slim with no new controller. Pretty sure he was the manager also, and then he tried to sell me a controller to go with my slim. Which only mad me more mad, didn't buy it. That original controller lasted me til the beginning of this year, got a new one from BestBuy. GameStop will always be a place I steer people away from, and warn about, it's well within reason.
@Thomas Houghton IKR??? I saw a wii game on their website (they had a used game sale) tried to purchase it, and it said it wasn't in stock. THEN WHY IS IT ON THE WEBSITE
I literally just walked out of a GameStop before watching this video and yes, the hassle around trying to get u to join the pro membership whatever is super real. Dude asked me like 5 different times if I wanted to join and I’m like “nah” and then like lawyer style tries to like defend the Membership like it was on trial or something. Like I buy one game every three months, I’m not 15 anymore. I don’t frequent Gamestop enough to justify paying for essentially a magazine subscription.
Just say: "Do you want to sell this game or don't you want to sell anything? Shut up and take my money!" I would have left the store (without the game) after asking 3 times. But man how sad must his life be to make a living this way? Prostitution would even be more honorable and honest.
@@CheapBastard1988 alright, I know it’s a annoying but what we’re not gonna do is shit on the man PERSONALLY for just doing what the company tells him to do. A job is a job is a job and in a down economy, hey, at least he’s got work. Sure it’s annoying, like intensely annoying, but it’s the same mechanic as “would you like fries w that/ would u like to make that a large”. It’s upselling. It’s not a concept exclusive to GameStop, however their employees are the more....fervent practitioners of it.
Also I don’t mean “I walked out” the GameStop like “I was so annoyed I left”. No I got my copy of Witcher 3 for Switch. Upselling may be annoying but it’s not enough to turn me away from buying the game that I want. That’d be like saying “I don’t want to go to McDonalds cuz they keep asking if I want my nuggets to be a meal”
Yeah I had a gamestop employee tell me that a game was out of stock, even though I looked it up on the app before I went in the store. So I just showed them the app and said "I want the new copy that I know you have, or I'll just go on Amazon and get it." Well I got my game that day. So that's what I do if they try to lie right to my face.
The game was probably being held for someone who had the smarts to call ahead. They probably had to deal with you, THEN another person whose game they sold to you.
@@deanvance4167 actually they had more than a few copies if I remember correctly this was a few years ago and it wasn't a game that sold much, I think, because it was an indie game, so no it wasn't on reserve or anything. They just didn't want to deal with putting them out. So perhaps don't jump to conclusions and assume things that aren't the reason. I've work in retail for nine years, so I know very well people will just lie to your face because they don't want to put something out or just do their jobs. So maybe just chill.
Best experience for 10; bought a game just before closing and when I got home, realised the wrong disc was in the case. Luckily it was for the game before the one I bought in the series, so I no-lifed it in one night and went back the next day to get the correct disc.
I miss having a GameCrazy in my town! 😭 It was like GameStop but it was paired with a Hollywood Video and the employees were really nice and always gave us copies of game magazines for being members ❤️😇
The empty box is cause they have like a drawer of disks and cases separately so when they let you purchase the game they forget to put the disk in the box.
Gamestop is actually ending that though. All cases on the walls will be display cases and we can just pop out the real deal from the drawer so that doesn't happen anymore
They did this to me with the first dark souls game. Got home to find the disc wasn’t in there and I went back to tell them I didn’t get the disc only to get in argument with the cashier because she said I was lying. As a result, I never played Dark Souls and thus never got into the franchise.
Yeah I don't think I've ever been to a Gamestop where the cases are "full" on the shelf, you always bring it up and they get the sleeved disc out of one of the drawers behind the counter. So if you get an empty box it's because they forgot to put one in so watch when you go to check out and make sure they hit them all if you're picking up multiple games.
as a former gamestop employee, we did do that for security reasons. keeping them empty while on the floor lowered the amount of theft. it was not a well-controlled process though. if the employee forgets to pull your game from the drawer, youre screwed. sometimes employees would even pull the wrong game from the drawers.
Lmao, I work at GameStop. The thumbnail for this video isn’t always true. Sometimes employees forget to replace the price stickers when we do price changes. The prices on the stickers are not always accurate. If you bring the game to the register and ask an associate for the price, there is a good chance that the sticker price doesn’t match the actual price. We never charge more for pre owned games over new.
I work at Gamestop too, and just today GTA V new is $20 and pre-owned is $25. HOWEVER, I'm sure next week it will go back up to $60, or $40, or something else and that pre-owned will stay $25. I personally love when people try to AHA! and act like they are exposing some big mistake and we're just like "Yup, that game is on sale this week."
Actually I remember in the 1990s and 2000s when most Gamestop locations were Electronics Boutique and the games were out in the store so that the customer could see the actual game they were going to buy.
@@notthatdigusted7468 . Same. But hey changing retail environment. They aren’t the only ones that do the empty case thing either. It’s a shame that it has come to this. Electronics Boutique, hadn’t seen that name in a long long time.
This is true. However it isn't hard to pull out the drawer, and pull the game from the sleeve and put it in the case. I know, I worked at Gamestop for a bit several years ago. It wasn't a great place to work. It had its perks, but corporate sucked hardcore.
@@somewhatchewy Same, going on 3 years now and can confirm corporate has no damn idea what they are doing....Also it isn't hard, but when your location is understaffed due to corporate cutting hours around busy times of the year, or the week they happen to run a big sale with little prior notice...well, its easy for mistakes to happen. As someone who works at GameStop......yeah....these are accurate. They have made changes to some of these now. I don’t want to lose my job over it, but I’ll answer in DMs if you want to ask.
I kinda meant a bunch of used games tho like selling some old used games you don’t play for like $40 but they’re like “$5 is the best we can do.Scratch that, how about $3?” ):
The cases Gamestop put out on the shelves are always empty to avoid theft. But unfortunately, if you're buying a game on a busy day, they'll just sell the case without putting the game in on accident. I worked at Gamestop for 2 years. It's usually an accident.
@madhukar Simple. They remove the thin plastic packaging around the case, take the disc out, put the disc in a little folder, put the folder in a drawer, then slap the case on the display wall.
So what does GameStop do if they came back saying there was no disc in the case? This actually happened to me but from a Walmart, and they just gave me a new one. I had my receipt and as soon as I got home I opened it with no disc and was like: "Well, I'm going back to Walmart now."
@@longboardingturtle Basically they check their inventory where they keep the discs in sleeves and if there's an extra one, they just hand you the disc.
This is similar to number 10. I tried buying a brand new Uncharted 2: Game of the Year edition. This version came with all DLC, but instead of being included on the game disc, it came in the form of a card with a code on it. The 1st time I bought it at GameStop, you could tell that it wasn't new. It was saran wrapped with a piece of tape holding the back. I questioned this with the employee and he told me that all the contents should be there. He also said that I can open it right there, but after I buy it of course. Not a problem. The instruction manual and the DLC code was missing. Big problem. So I demanded a full refund, which thankfully I got. That was the stores only copy so he directed me to another GameStop that had it in stock. I went over to the 2nd GameStop and asked if they had it. They did. However, what the employee brought out was a shoestring type of disgrace. There was no disc case. The game disc was in a sleeve with the manual and DLC code held together with a fucking rubber band. I don't know what happened to the case but they were trying to sell it to me in that state as BRAND NEW. Who the hell would do something that shady? I asked the girl at the counter if she was serious. Her response was a slow, "Yes," a quick look at the other employee, and both of them staring at me like I was the crazy one. Needless to say I left empty handed. Later, that day I bought it a Walmart and didn't shop at GameStop for a while
One reason I think that they over over charge for used copies is because it incentivizes buying the new copy...which if you try to bring back they will give you 1.50 for a $60 title, where as if you return a used copy within a week you can get all your money back.
I have a complicated set of feelings for GameStop. I have frequented several locations several times in my gaming life, and had good casual acquaintanceships with the staff at each one. For one, video games and tabletop games are my favorite hobbies, and there's a lot of overlap for the two audiences, so it was, of course, natural I'd try to strike up conversations with people involved in distributing the elements of those hobbies. Some were more "company loyal" than others, yes, some did carry out the company's policies to a point. Most of the ones I met ( in New Haven County, CT), however, did lip service to the policies and we would make offhand jokes about corporate structure. I was a cashier, myself, at the time, so I knew the deal when it came to retail pressure. We didn't share information that was private in our respective companies, more a subtle nudge-wink to how dehumanizing our jobs were, commiseration, etc. I never hated game store employees. Not unless they were genuinely clueless or malicious, which was hardly ever the case. I hope there are still brick-and-mortat retailers of games, with better and more sustanable practices, in the near future. If not GameStop, then someone. I, for one, don't want the act of buying games in person to die forever.
It is such a treat to find someone else who had good experiences with GameStop. Our closest GameSrop was very family friendly and social. If I was there on my own I would chat with the manager and employees about their gaming experiences and find some things to laugh at. One time I heard about them stopping a woman from buying her 9-year-old son a T-rated game. One of the best things was when my Ps2 died, I went in to get that famous backwards compatible PS3. However, the store manager advised me to get a new PS2 and a new PS3. That was only $50 more than the used PS3, and then I would have a one-year warranty on both without paying extra.
What really sucks about gamestop is that the people who make the policies aren't the once having to perform them. So you get 2 people forced to have a conversation that neither wants to so some wealthy person up the chain can make the real money.
A company that doesn't innovate deserves to die. A younger and more competitive startup will take it's place. Don't know why people feel emotional about this. They REFUSED to innovate and adapt 🤷♂️
I don't know why another gaming store hasn't taken there place yet. I blame Target / Walmart / Bestbuy that no one else is trying to take up the mantle that GameStop is sullying. (I mean I was sad enough when they murdered Think Geek)
@@YetiCoolBrother sorry, I prefer physical games. I don't have time or resources to put into aquiring the several TBs my games would take up no the patience to wait for those kinds of load times. @Derick Masai . I agree, and even if you disregard their customer service failings, GS has failed to adapt to a changing market so it's on them if they fail. The only downside is the job losses, but hopefully some boutique gaming stores will take their place to at least a small degree.
@@demonheart13 Amazon ships physical games bro. I do know the struggle of not having fast enough internet to reliably DL games and updates and shit tho, I’m always grateful I generally don’t have that problem anymore. Storage isn’t an issue because the cloud is a thing and I don’t need to have literally all my games downloaded at the same time, which I guess goes back to having relatively fast internet. For example, it only took me like 2.5-3 hours to redownload Destiny 2 a couple months ago and that game is 100+ GB currently.
It's easy to pick on GameStop, as they're the only one left. That said, the other guys did the same crap. Babbage's and Software Etc. both pulled the same garbage when they were around. It's simply an issue with the business model. Software DOES NOT bring profits to the retailer. As a former sales manager of a Computer City, I can attest to that. The lowest profit margins always came from the software. That's why big-box stores always did what they could to get you to buy accessories and consumables. The profit was always going to be there, whether it was a ream of printer paper or a printer cable, or a CD stand, or even a crappy little "Epson" refrigerator magnet. The software-specific retailers had to do something. They chose "game trading" to get those profits. When that wasn't helping, they went after accessories, tchotchkes, and other low-dollar/high-profit items.. Of course, the most profit came from warranties and memberships. The LAST thing they ever wanted to do was sell new software .
@@willcooper5389 Of course, I'm not defending them whatsoever. There's a reason the other similar businesses no longer exist. It's a patently untenable business model. If you have to resort to predatory practices and push hard for profit over customer experience, then maybe the market doesn't need your business.
I worked at GameStop years ago. The new copies being a lower price than used would come from the publisher would put their game on sale for a short time. Gamestop would not change the used pricing since the game would go back to normal pricing in a week or so.
I remember when i purchased mario tennis aces new from gamestop, went home and played for a day and was bored, obviously they didnt let me return for full value so they said i had to trade it in and they wanted to give me 17.50 for it. I picked a pre owned from the shelf and they were selling it for 54.99
If you think they give too little, try a pawn shop. I work at one and have straight up had to tell people they’d get more from GameStop for it. Granted, even with more recent games we severely discount them to be competitive since people don’t typically think of us when they think about getting games, but even then it’s still a bit rough telling people that.
Number 1 is actually correct. I was traded in two Wii u, 1 basic Wii, a DSi, 3ds(basic, not the new one with amibo), and 37 games across the systems, all triple a titles like Pokemon, zelda, final fantasy, and fire emblem. I got a grand total of $156, and half the games had a trade-in value less then 10 cents, so I had to keep them. Turns out if a game has a trade value less than $1, gamestop won't take it. Meaning I have over 200 games that I have finished and want to trade in, but can't because of the stupid rule I just mentioned. I can't even give the games to friends or family because they also have the same games and can't get rid of them. If anyone knows a place that will take those games off my hands, please respond to this comment.
I remember when Injustice 2 came out I really just didn’t like it despite really loving the first one, so I went to trade it in about 2 weeks after its release and I got offered 8 bucks for it. 8.
There's a vid somewhere here on RUclips of a guy trading in a brand new game day 1 and only getting like 10 bucks. Brand new, fresh out the factory, unopened, $60 game.
2 weeks after launch, you'd get around 30~ish dollars for a game (probably in store credit), because theree wouldn't be a big backlog of the game used yet. Typically, newly launched games are worth $54.99 used at GS and if they game sold well (which Injustice 2 did) GS would offer the most for a used copy for it so they can get their markup and sell the game used. Over-exaggeration isn't something you can get away with online.
I remember when I was younger I tried to sell my Nintendo 64 games that I paid $65-70USD new & Gamestop was only offering me $2-5USD for each game, I felt Gamestop were taking advantage of me as a child!
I stopped going to game stop after I bought a mobile gaming center (the TV in a brief case) for 400 dollars and I went back two days later to return it and the simp behind the counter told me that they don't do returns. I literally had to get the manager and show him that at the back of the recipient (which I had) says returns are allowed for 15 days on any accessories. It was a dgit show and as I left I told them this is just one of the many reasons they are garbage
Soo i may get hate for this hear because well its the internet but I just got to comment. I am a current Gamestop Manager, I've worked for the company for 10 years. Although I cant wait to finish my degree and get out of the business, that has more to do with retail and less with gamestop, although yes Gamestop has not been great either its just so so, like it could be worse. I REALLY wish I could talk to the makers of this video because most of their complaints are easily explained and here's some of the ones I can without too much typing Games missing from cases: yeah this is just human error, the employee either got distracted talking to the customer so they didn't grab the gut (what we call the game thats in a sleeve in the drawer) or they put the wrong case in the bag and not the one with the game. This is a training thing and the more organized the store the less it will happen. I myself have done this a ton of times, I'm not saying its not frustrating and if a customer is frustrated ill give a discount to the game to try to help (though I am limited by corporate how much I can discount) The telling customer we don't have something in stock when we do: i can't speak for other stores or managers but this is not something that we do at my store. Sometimes we just don't have stock when we probably should, especially now during the pandemic, during the early parts we were being shipped stock very infrequently. And Pro tip you can ask them (politely please) to show you the screen, most stores can even flip them around now! New games being priced lower than used games: This actually is more to do with the publisher of a certain games than it does us. Alot of times early on in a games life cycle games will go on sale for various reasons and gamestop just doesn't want to take the loss in margin on those games. The company would rather wait the sale out. It sucks I dont have like a defense for that. But its not like we do it ourselves on purpose. My store will just tell you the new game is cheaper (cant promises that for other stores) The pushy salesman: yeah thats just bad sales. We do have a TON to talk to every customer about and its annoying for us too, not as much as for you to listen but still. I train my guys to try to make their pitches as short and simple as they can while doing other parts of the transaction to make sure they are respectful of the guests time. Also something I preach to my guys is their job is to give the customer good information about our services, if they did that and the customer says no then its a no, if you feel like you have to ask "are you sure" you did your job poorly. Each store is unique and we are mostly left to our own devices, some managers just train their guys better than others. Hopefully you have multiple stores in your area and can pick the best one. If anyone has any questions I can try my best to answer them. I'm certainly no PR guy just a manager who knows gamestop isn't the best by any means but also doesn't want it to be put down for simple explainable things.
You are one of the few good managers, most of the ones in my district are terrible and use shitty methods to make sales and reach prestige. Good to know there are nice managers out there
You are good for writing, but what you're saying is specific to you're store, which is apparently a lot better than a majority of stores and that's good. But those other stores do represent you and that's the bad part
I 100% understand and that's true. I guess I was more trying to say that its not something that we are forced to do. Is the pressure there to perform? God yes. However you can do it a different way, just alot of manager are, well lazzy, and choose bad techniques. All I do is I do the best with what I am given. If all the stores are shit in your area, I feel for you and I'd say stop going (you probably have) but if you haven't tried different location, see what you can find. I appreciate the positive comments.
I remember when Borderlands 2 was releasing and I pre-ordered it one of the employees upped my version to the LootCrate edition without telling me so I had to spend $200 on it when I was almost done preordering the Standard edition. I of course didn't get it through them I waited till the GOTY edition came out but still pissed me off bad. Also a while back (i wanna say 2016) I went to gamestop and bought Saints Row 1 & 2 and got home to play them SR1 worked fine but SR2 was unplayable, so the next day I went in and told them they claimed that they couldn't do anything about that, which having a friend whose parent was a Manager at one help me at the time know it was Bullcrap, So i told them that I didn't even want my money back just a new copy of the game to replace the one that THEY sold me that didn't work and the lady was by far the biggest @$$hole about it that I left the store and haven't went back since. Now hearing that they might actually be going out of business makes me so happy.
i remember trading in a couple games at gamestop and being super disappointed by the low trade in price. I ended up getting titanfall 2 (which i had never heard of prior to purchasing it) and don't regret it to this day.
There was a short period (a few weeks) several years ago where one of their used game purchase price was lower than the game could be purchased new. I bought around 15 copies of that game and sold them back as used for a few dollars profit per game (learned that the wrapping must be removed to sell the game to them). Also for years I have been abusing their 7 day return policy for used games to play games for free.
As someone who’s done a lot of retail cashier work I genuinely appreciate your repeatedly reinforcing that it is the COMPANY doing these things not the employees who are just fearing for their jobs
All of these practices, especially the pushy clerks and the lying “we only ordered enough for pre orders” of the HOTTEST game of the decade, are the reason I haven’t been a Game Stop customer since the early 2000s. Why do people still bother when Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon will get you what you want with no fuss?
When the plague is gone you all should try your local swapmeet, theres usually a dude who buys sells sometimes even trades games and consoles. You'll get cash for what you sell (at wholesale prices) and they don't ever try to make you buy membership cards.

Me turning my xbox one to gamestop: Had it for almost a year, little dusty and the A buttons a bit jammed. Gamestop: Best I can do is $40 and nothing for the controller its busted.
@@Chocobobob i definitely do but the xbox one x I have isn't worth anything, after a power outage earlier this year everytime I turn it on it turns on but nothing is displayed on the TVs
I actually seen employees throw away cases and I ask if I can have them and they cheerfully said yes. Especially blue cases for wii U, they hooked them up a couple of times.
I'm actually lucky to have a GameStop near me where the employees are super chill and never pushy about in-store purchases. I went in to get a cash offer for my Xbox One S 1tb and got a little over $120 for it. While the guy was making sure it worked and all that, he was literally just shooting the shit with me about my new PC Build and some new games coming out on it. Never once even pushed a single sale on me. Sometimes there are diamonds in the rough.
First (an last) time I was in a Gamestop was for the pre-order of Battlefield 3. I wanted the "preorder party" experience an meet like-minded fans. It was an hour an a half of a 32" tv playing a demo of BF3, less than 20 people, an the "party experience" was hours-old cheap pizza an store-brand cola. I DID meet a couple people that I play online with to this day, but other than that....
#10 Tends to happen when the person ringing you up is distracted, be a customer calling while they are ringing you up, a bunch of people coming in the store when you are getting rung up, and you can be discussing video game related things with the employee ringing you up and they forget to check the box. And so so many other scenarios 🤓
My country doesn't have a Gamestop, but I can imagine my reaction to that. It would be something like this: "$1? Fuck you! I'm gonna sell it on the internet.
I was moving out of state while in the military and stuffed it in a bag. After the move I saw they put the wrong game in the case. I called the local Game Stop but they said I had to go to the store that sold me the game. $50 wasted! On used games...Game Stop sold new, popular used games for $2 cheaper than the brand new game! I stopped buying used games from Game Stop when I saw that. I haven't bought a used game from there in over a decade. I nearly stopped buying new games. Nearly every time I went to buy a game on release day they would look at me hesitantly because I didn't pre order it. I told them I'd go around the damn corner to Target or Wal Mart and buy it if they wanted to treat me like an insubordinate child! Now I rarely buy from Game Stop anymore.
I did not know about their “circle of life”policy! Makes sense though, in 2010 I went in to buy the game MAG. I asked for a NEW copy because the game was only like $30 but the employee said the used copy was $5 cheaper. I said I didn’t care I wanted to new copy. He asked why I didn’t want to save $5 and I told him because I’d rather have my money go to the developers than to GameStop. This made him really mad and now I know why because of that policy.
When I worked at GameStop several years ago, I always tried to subvert the company's wishes and get the customer the best deal no matter how. They really did try to push us to push customers at that time which really sickened me. They also tried to get us to walk around and use a tablet to sell people stuff in their face when they're trying to look at games and I never agreed with that, and only did when the district manager came by.
You think gameranx would mention when they had a producer** steal another youtuber's video, got called out on reddit, deleted the video and apologized?
As an ex-gamestop employee of a year, here's my thoughts: 10. it is easy when there is a line and things are hectic to forget to put a game in the case, I think its just a minor slip up that does have to do with how they organize that. 9. This usually has more to do with sales and promos, but your point is also valid. 8. I hated this about the job. Don't do this and get fired... I usually just really tried to pick my battles. I never misled people, at least to my knowledge. Hated that. 7. This was awful, especially in amiibo season. Luckily I never had to make those calls, but people are very VERY protective about their pre orders. 6. I usually never tried with the rewards unless they were a repeat customer or were trading enough things in that it would be free/actually get them more money. 5. I never had to lie about not having the new game, but I would say like "we do but we also have a pre owned I could put aside for you that's cheaper if you are interested". 4. they should've sold the company lol. 3. I didn't work there at that time, but yeah that was a bad look. 2. I don't remember this one. 1. Okay this one a mixed bag. On one hand, I did enjoy telling some people that their 2005 Fifa game wasn't worth anything in 2015 and watching them have a fit, but it stung when I went to trade in halo 3 and they said 50 cents. At the end of the day, they have all the leverage and you don't have to sell to them, which is why you are going to get low balled. There were a few times people would try to film me telling them there game prices. I would just stop the transaction and wait until they were adults about it. Also, to the people who want top dollar for their console that looks like it was dragged through the dirt: what the hell are you thinking???
Two personal moments for me. 1. This one is obvious and probably doesn't affect most....but the fact that after a short time a game has been released...stores will then OPEN the game cases snd store discs in their stupid drawers behind the counter...and then sell them as brand new. No, FUCK THAT, once you cut open a game's factory wrapoing, it ceases to be new. Someone has to fucking touch the disc and shove it into a envelope. I had this happen once to me, back when the PS3 was the current Gen, wanted to buy Resident Evil 5, figured after work I'd swing uo and pick up a copy, was still new...asked for a new copy of it...saw them pull the disc out from behind the counter...then go look for the case to put it in...I def complained and because I was impatient I just went ahead and bought it, tho with a discount. I'll never buy a game unless it's release day from a Gamestop store....even then 99% of the time I buy & pre-order my games online. 2. Them lying about stock.. Had a perosnsl experience. Was looking for StarCraft 2 Collector's Edition for Void of Light, it had been out for a fsir bit...but I saw online while hunting for one brand new, that my local Gamestop had ONE in stock, but was not available for online purchase.... So I go in and ask the person working, whom I had called ahead to ask about it ( which they lied) about it and they tried to bullshit me that they didn't have any copies....so I then pull out my phone and show the listing that was updated and still showing a copy.... They begrudgingly go to the back and hand me the Collector's Edition and I bought it...like come the fuck on with all the lies here...
So, I made a comment of my own about this, but those copies they had to cut open - they got to check them out and play them, for months, at their houses. Most of the time it was only the used copies, but they did it with new ones, too. Additionally, that copy was in the back, because that employee wanted to buy it, but had to wait to either “penny” it out after it didn’t sell for a period of time, or wait for a friend to come in and buy it for them...because they weren’t allowed to always get the collector’s editions and such at their own store. The amount of games that Game Stop destroys because it doesn’t sell is ridiculous. So, employees end up with a crap ton of games, sometimes multiple copies that they gift their friends, because otherwise, the discs will be broken into many pieces and trashed. Its like, that games sat on the shelf, because corporate wanted them to sell them at outrageous prices. I moved to buying games from regular stores and online due to this horrible practice. They’re just a crap company.
I was excited and wanted to read booklet of assassin's Creed 3 on my way out and found that the disc wasn't there, thankfully I was in front of store and went back in and got the copy
Never had this problem myself, but I started asking store clerks to check themselves if the disc is in and not scratched or cracked after I heard from a few people they got scammed that way. When they found out at home or even outside the store and went back, store clerks refused to do anything and claimed they stole the disc or replaced with a broken one and came to get another one for free.
@@Sicarius888 this was when I was a teenager ,maybe 7 years ago? Shopped there alot and only happened once. Been shopping ever since they launched so it's not too common
@@cole9693 In my local stores it was quite common, but only for used games. They had empty boxes on display to prevent theft and gave you disc at the counter. If they had more than 1, they said leave it on display and gave you another box from inventory that was supposed to already have disc. But when moved boxes between inventory and display they sometimes forgot to put the disc back and not always checked the condition of trade ins. And once you left the store, any problem was your fault.
As someone who worked at Gamestop a long time ago, it isn’t necessarily a line when they tell you they don't have any new copies of a game. Aside from major releases, the inventory for individual titles is proportional to the number of pre-orders for it. They would get stock to match the pre-orders and maybe a few extras.
Yeah as a current employee of Wal-Mart (7 years going), I can honestly say I never had my supervisor literally stand over me while I did my job like they did at my local game stop. I feel for the people that have to do the front end of the store they usually have to put up with the most bull. (Though there is some a** holes that could use a elbow to the face)
So on number 10, it might have not been their fault. I remember, I think this was either during PS3 or maybe PS2 era, most likely PS3. You can buy PS3 game, open the plastic wrapper ever so slightly to take out the disk and close it back. Then you can return the game, and since it was "unopened" they would take it back and give you full refund. Not sure how widely this was known, but I know a lot of friends who have done this. We were never sure if other people had figured it out, but this makes me think they had
The reason GAMESTOP game cases be empty all the time is because they prevent customers from walking out and stealing the games. You have to go to the counter to pick up the disc or pick up the actual physical copy with the disc in a case. Those are decoy that you are seeing on the floor!!!!
@@kaydenka1 they were empty, the guy at the counter was still pissed though, without the cases they have to sell the games in generic boxes and cant price them as high.
Dude I was in gamestop two days ago and saw doom eternal for 30 pre owned and was like sick Ill buy it, the guy was like " its only 20 new" so I took a new copy. Got home peeled off the plastic from the sealed box, opened her up, and what did I see looking back at me? TWO copies of Doom Eternal!!! :D hahaha
when i was in college, the town had a small shop on main street that sold games from NES to current gen and they would use gamestops website to see what games were worth used and give you 75% of that instead of like 3 bucks. never went to gamestop during college.
Gamestop is an essential business. I'm seventeen and have three 3 little siblings I was looking after while my dad was shopping. About the only thing that could calm them down was playing video games. Gamestop was the only place I could get new games to keep my siblings busy. There was no school, no day trips we could take, TV was just reruns because new episodes couldn't be filmed, and the library was closed so their weren't any new books. Both of the Gamestop's I went to, Harrison(which has since closed) and Glenway, just had me sit in my car outside, call the store and order some games, slide my credit card or gift card under the door, then they would open the door and hang the bag with the games, receipt and my cards on the door. If you think that games are not essentially during a lock down like back then, spend a day or two with 3 bored gradeschoolers. You will change your mind very fast.
I remember buying "new" copies of Tomb Raider Legend, and Mario & Luigi Partners in Time. I received two opened cases. The Tomb Raider disc was VERY obviously used, and totally scratched up. M & L had an intact save file still on the cartridge, where the original owner played through pretty much the entire game. I still remember being asked at least 3 times to sign up for that stupid rewards program. I haven't set foot in a GameStop since 2006.
when I bought my Playstation 4, I wanted to pick up a few used games; so I bought 3 things that tallied up to ~$93 USD. so I handed her $95 in 5s and 10s because I was a high schooler. the clerk comes back and she says something along the lines of "I am sorry, but you only handed me $80. do you have another $15 or do you need me to put back one of the games you picked". then I put back Crash Team Racing and put the OG wad of money in my back pocket and paid the current amount. I then counted how much I actually handed them the first time and it was actually closer to $100.
@@kaydenka1 also, this is more of a Covid thing; but when I was trying to buy Doom Eternal in March/April; they refused to take my store gift card with like $60 in fear of my card having the Virus;. but they were fine taking my debit card.
I'm a former Gamestop employee! A lot of these things I've witnessed and was trained on (like the circle of life and pushing the reward programs). The empty cases thing is so people don't steal games. It does suck when employees mess up though. Also while I was pushed to sell more used games, I never had to lie about being out of stock at my store.
As a former GS employee: 10) GS employees are humans. Sometimes they forget to put the game in the box. Maybe check before you leave the store. 9) The NEW game went on sale. What's the problem? You get a new copy for cheaper. 8, 6) Employees that are weirdly pushy are trying to get promoted. 5) If they tell you they don't have a new game in stock, they don't have it in stock! The company will never tell employees to sell NOTHING. 1) The trade in prices are determined by how often people buy the pre-owned games, which is what they are buying from you. If little to no people are buying the game you're trying to trade in, don't be surprised when they don't give you much for it. Your copy of 'Madden 17' isn't gonna be worth more just because you want more. Trading in a game within 2 days (in case it's shit) gives you your full money back. Within the first few weeks, you'll get more than half. After that, it's like driving a car off the lot: depreciates the second it's driven.
I brought the "Game of the year edition" of Fallout 4 from my local EB games, I got it because it was $10 cheaper than the "standard edition" of Fallout 4. That's weird right?
@@makenzieswanner709 I buy the "Game of the year edition" of Fallout 4 instead of the "Standard edition" as it was cheaper and that makes me a broke 80's kid? I see now I should've paid more for less content because that's the smart thing to do.
@@bindipig1225 I don't care about credit. The same-day aspect of that would be nice, but I've never had issues selling things quickly for the full used price lol.
I used to be a manager for game Stop and I agree 100% with this list. I'm also grateful that they acknowledge it's not the employees fault we were forced to act that way and do those things. I'd also like to add that some stores being shady made things even worse for the honest stores. My district was very honest and the dm(district manager) was very clear that we should remain honest. Even so I've been cussed out for being out of a game(usually do to the company under-ordering new releases) and customers simply not believing me. I pride myself on being an honest and trustworthy salesman so that always made kinda sad. Like I couldn't be proud of the work I was doing there and most defiantly not of the company I represented.
I bought Civilization IV for like $50 new, played it once, won it, didn't really like the game enough to play it more, so i sold it to GameStop for $6. About a month after purchase. Dicks.
Why would they do that?
@@drami518 cause the way I figure it was they weren’t doing great business to begin with and it irritated the manager to think that some kid was getting more business at a flea market than their store was.

God you’re my favorite falcon. The amount of passive aggressive hatred you are putting out toward GameStop is truly beautiful.
Last time i was there was to buy gta 5 but i didnt have enough money so i bought naruto

Yeah I had a gamestop employee tell me that a game was out of stock, even though I looked it up on the app before I went in the store. So I just showed them the app and said "I want the new copy that I know you have, or I'll just go on Amazon and get it." Well I got my game that day. So that's what I do if they try to lie right to my face.
king shit.

I've had a GameStop TRY to sell me an empty case. I always watch them at the register and make sure they put the disc in the case.
Best experience for 10; bought a game just before closing and when I got home, realised the wrong disc was in the case. Luckily it was for the game before the one I bought in the series, so I no-lifed it in one night and went back the next day to get the correct disc.

The empty box is cause they have like a drawer of disks and cases separately so when they let you purchase the game they forget to put the disk in the box.
@@Rynn21 yeah I usually did, but sometimes people just get really excited for that new game but it's natural
But that is for new popular games, they did it for fallen order that I got a few days after release
That protocol of having empty cases on the shelf is due to significant amount of theft.

@madhukar Did you just not read my entire reply? I literally answered that question in my reply.

I was looking for this comment.

@@willcooper5389 Of course, I'm not defending them whatsoever. There's a reason the other similar businesses no longer exist. It's a patently untenable business model.
@@jollycooperation7446 gamestop doesn't take sealed games.
2 weeks after launch, you'd get around 30~ish dollars for a game (probably in store credit), because theree wouldn't be a big backlog of the game used yet. I am a current Gamestop Manager, I've worked for the company for 10 years. Although I cant wait to finish my degree and get out of the business, that has more to do with retail and less with gamestop, although yes Gamestop has not been great either its just so so, like it could be worse.
I REALLY wish I could talk to the makers of this video because most of their complaints are easily explained and here's some of the ones I can without too much typing
Games missing from cases: yeah this is just human error, the employee either got distracted talking to the customer so they didn't grab the gut (what we call the game thats in a sleeve in the drawer) or they put the wrong case in the bag and not the one with the game. This is a training thing and the more organized the store the less it will happen. I myself have done this a ton of times, I'm not saying its not frustrating and if a customer is frustrated ill give a discount to the game to try to help (though I am limited by corporate how much I can discount)
The telling customer we don't have something in stock when we do: i can't speak for other stores or managers but this is not something that we do at my store.
My store will just tell you the new game is cheaper (cant promises that for other stores)
The pushy salesman: yeah thats just bad sales.

GameStop worst mistake number 1 : giving $1 for a game 😂
Cant get $1 anymore unless u sell online and even then its not worth it bc of s&h.
u mean less lol
I could find the cure for covid and they would still only offer $3
The pro membership and there points system. Games or "good" games dont come regularly enough for me to enough warrant me buying it.
Falcon put it best: “the more they do that. The less I want it” 😂
Well most employees check the boxes before handing it to you now a days
Do they though?
@@MrTommySixxx yes
True. I did when I worked there.
One time I had them put the same game in two different cases. Saying that they were both 3DS Monster Hunter games.

10 exes you want to forget, bc they were mistakes. Sunshine Spotless style.
You think gameranx would mention when they had a producer** steal another youtuber's video, got called out on reddit, deleted the video and apologized?
As an ex-gamestop employee of a year, here's my thoughts:
10. it is easy when there is a line and things are hectic to forget to put a game in the case, I think its just a minor slip up that does have to do with how they organize that.
@@Sicarius888 huh, so it's gamespots fault, good thing he fixed his mistake and gave me my copy
To be honest most of us had GameInformer magazine through Gamestop rewards
Gamestop, itself, is a mistake they want you to forget.
Kind of incredible that they are seemingly doing fine, despite the rapid changes in the gaming industry in even the last 5 to 8 years.
They still be selling consoles
As someone who worked at Gamestop a long time ago, it isn’t necessarily a line when they tell you they don't have any new copies of a game. Aside from major releases, the inventory for individual titles is proportional to the number of pre-orders for it.
They would get stock to match the pre-orders and maybe a few extras.
Gamestop is the "Walmart" of the gaming world with how they treat their employees.
Walmart didn't treat my parents bad
Nah, having worked at both I can say pretty definitively that Walmart is a much better company to work for.
Maybe Walmart from 1994?
Yeah as a current employee of Wal-Mart (7 years going), I can honestly say I never had my supervisor literally stand over me while I did my job like they did at my local game stop. I feel for the people that have to do the front end of the store they usually have to put up with the most bull. (Though there is some a** holes that could use a elbow to the face)
Falcon couldn’t be anymore correct 😂😂
We were told to do the same things in Fry's electronics... Classic
The missing game happened to me once, so we called then and went back, and they fixed their mastake no questions asked
Nice Try Gamestop Executive

So could you buy a game with the disc inside, take it out, then go back to get a new one? Asking for a friend

I was in a gamestop when a kid scooped about 20 cases off the shelf and sprint out of the store.
Aren't the cases usually empty tho? He essentially ran off with nothing and will get a criminal record for being a dumbass! 😂😂😂
@@kaydenka1 they were empty, the guy at the counter was still pissed though, without the cases they have to sell the games in generic boxes and cant price them as high.

Yooo, a former employee told a story of some dude running in and just grabbing a shit ton of cases of the shelf and sprint out of the store.

Finally, Karma gets a win.
when i was in college, the town had a small shop on main street that sold games from NES to current gen and they would use gamestops website to see what games were worth used and give you 75% of that instead of like 3 bucks. never went to gamestop during college.
I would've made them count out the money in front of me to prove I was short on cash.
Sorry you got ripped off. 💔
@@kaydenka1 also, this is more of a Covid thing; but when I was trying to buy Doom Eternal in March/April; they refused to take my store gift card with like $60 in fear of my card having the Virus;. but they were fine taking my debit card.
@@Heroism4499 Why would you ever go back to a store like this?
@@CheapBastard1988 I haven't sense Doom Eternal's release
I work at gamestop and yeah sometimes we get caught up and forget that the boxes are empty.😅
As a former GS employee:
10) GS employees are humans.
The tone of this video sounds like Falcon just had a bad GameStop experience and recorded this video last night heh.
I brought the "Game of the year edition" of Fallout 4 from my local EB games, I got it because it was $10 cheaper than the "standard edition" of Fallout 4. That's weird right?
No, it's not. F4 was more popular, which means it's more valuable in the marketplace.
@@deanvance4167 Still seems weird to have a Game of the year edition cheaper than the Standard edition.

"Out of curiosity, how much would a used copy of ___ trade in for? $5? so glad I sold it on ebay for 35."

Dicks.
