Yes, I’m so glad I decided to give American cheese in ramen a try after reading recipes from South Korean. A few years later, I also learned from another South Korean ramen recipe that adding a little less water and instead quite a bit of milk in the end (but while it is still boiling, when less than half the time is left) tastes similar to adding American cheese. Like surprisingly similar, especially in how it affects the flavour of the soup base, but a little milder and rounder of a taste. But definitely in the same family of flavours. YESSSS Emmy!! So happy you specified that the sausages taste like hillshire farms kielbasa, and not just kielbasa. Not many people know this, but kielbasa simply means sausage made in Poland, or by Poles. It can be literally anything. Sooo broad. I appreciate your specificity!!
I was inspired to give this a try, but after making the first serving (for my husband), I realized I needed to adjust a couple of things for the other two servings. We only had Maruchan brand ramen, which might be why I had to finesse it a bit. 1) I reduced the amount of boiling water to around 1 cup (236 ml). This allowed for a rich, creamy sauce rather than the thinner, broth-like version my husband received. He still liked it, but ours was better. 2) His noodles were a bit too soggy, but since the egg needs that full, two minutes in the microwave in order for the egg whites to cook, I couldn't shave any time off of there. So as soon as it came out of the microwave, I immediately broke the yolk, & stirred in the cheese slices (they had softened a bit after sitting out, which helped). This created that thicker sauce I mentioned, which coated the noodles beautifully (but still with some left in the bottom of the bowl) rather than having them absorb more liquid. 3) Optional, but we added black pepper & some leftover cabbage, as well. It wasn't bad, but broccoli would've been much better, imo. It did add a nice bit of bite, tho.
Coincidentally I’d watched some videos about kujirai ramen recently and made this just a few nights ago. It was midnight and I needed a snack before bed. I was really happy how it tasted and how quick it was to make.
Emmy I have been making this since 1985, except with kielbasa chopped up and a touch of Ginger. Won't eat ramen any other way. Very yummy. Love the video!
I've always used less water and frequently leave the season packet out all together. I add nutritional yeast, avocado, garlic and onion power if I don't have garlic and onion. Then whatever veggies and vegan protein I have. Sometimes I add plain-vegan yogurt to add some creaminess.
I was feeling a little bit lazy when it came to cooking this evening and then I came across this video. Luckily I had all the ingredients for this dish (more or less.) Thank you Emmy for a wonderful evening meal that took almost no effort.
Tried this for lunch; hubby's still slurping his noodles. Will *definitely* be making it again. I used chopped grilled tofu, a very thinly sliced cabbage leaf, thinly sliced shiitake, green onion, and Havarti cheese (American cheeze is banned in this house). Creamy and delicious! Interestingly, it took the same amount of time in our 750 watt microwave.
1. 300 ml of boiling water in bowl 2. Soak ramen in water 3. Put half of soup packet and put all veg packet 4. Cut up sausage into disk and put then into bowl 5. Cover them and put microwave for 1 min. 6. Stir 7. Build little next in middle 8. Put egg and poke yolk with chopstik 9. Microwave 2 to 2 and half min 10. Add slice of american cheese 11. Add green onion for garnish.
I know a little hack which was created by Nissin in Brazil when they released a "yakisoba" line back in late 80's, early 90's: you cook the pasta por 2 minutes, then put the dried pasta into a saucepan with two tablespoons of oil and cook the pasta for some 30 seconds, then put the seasoning. The seasoning is still on sale in Brazil to this day, it's used with the "Talharim" line, it's a heavier seasoning.
Yeah we have that in the Netherlands as well or at least something similar: Nissin Soba. There's actually no soba involved - they just sell instant ramen under that name - but I love how it's a 'dry' version with a sauce that is kinda glaze-y. We have them in 'classic', teriyaki, chili and yakitori. Especially delicious if you add some chopped green onion
Emmy - I too WAS (unfortunately) a green onion fiend. But in my golden years I just can't eat them any more without being miserable with heartburn. So I have made cilantro my go to addition and it's really working for me. It gives me that fresh taste and livens up anything !!!
Also I enjoy how much time you spent after making it explaining it when you eat. Not just a quick close but it’s so welcoming and your an amazing person!
Hi, Emmy! I wanted to leave a comment to say that I appreciate all of your videos. My grandma passed away in December from covid and we both had enjoyed your videos for years. Our conversations almost always included something about you and one of your fun videos. Watching them now brings me a lot of comfort knowing she'd be watching these too if she were here. So, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for being you, Emmy!
@@california7138 Yeah, she's made a 'Bologna Cake' and also made a 'Spaghetti-Os Jell-O Mold' that had the entire middle filled up with Vienna Sausages standing up-right. haha
It was 3 am when I watched this. Decided I was hungry. You bet I tried it. I’m not a fan of instant noodles with all the jazz or the instant noodles packs in general. Love this tho. For those who are not the biggest fan I suggest making half. Half way through I got that ugh feeling!! Loved this tho. Nice snack
Do not try this with a normal package of Maruchan ramen and / or a 1200 watt microwave. I have so much water left, my noodles are overdone and translucent, the plastic wrap melted (???), and somehow it foamed out of the bowl and all of the ingredients ended up stuck inside my microwave. 💀 Edit: I tried this again with half the water (150ml) listed in the recipe and I changed the plastic wrap out for the second heating and I had no issues! Still used the Maruchan Ramen and the 1200 watt microwave.
I think there's a problem with basic understanding of physics with pretty much all youtubers who say "And put it in the microwave for 1 minute." No matter how hard or often I yell "AT HOW MANY WATTS!?" I never get an answer. So that's how you end up where you are now, Cweldon01. Watts matter.
Microwaving an egg can be super dangerous. Some people have gotten serious burns from it exploding . How to cook that, a baking channel on youtube just did a debunking video where she showed what can happen. Just be careful :)
This is why you poke a hole on the egg yolk before microwaving it! What makes the yolk explode is the membrane accumulating too much steam, and poking that hole prevents that from happening :) Been poking holes on my eggs for a while now when I microwave them and have yet to see an exploding egg.
@@itsneryssa it does help but in the video she tried a lot of different ways and sometimes it still explodes im not saying it happens every time but it can just wanting to let some people know
@@itsneryssa i really recommend the video from how to cook that its super informative. She also has a degree in food science so she really tests things out. Like she showed even the white by itself can expload its not just the yolk.
@@prettykitty345 I saw that video too. I love her channel! The only thing she didn’t test, IIRC, was microwaving beaten eggs. For years now I’ve been making maangchi’s microwave gyeranjjim (“steamed egg”), no ‘splodey.
I don't know if having less than fresh eggs (more than one month post production) is a blessing in my case because I still have to have an egg at that date to bust while I'm poaching it or just cooking it with a slice of cheese as topping in the microwave. I always poke the yolk though at the expense of a bleeding egg.😔
I finally made this… WOW!!!!! I added seaweed crisps to mine and roasted sesame seeds, and garlic sausage from Trader Joe’s. Next time I will be adding mushrooms 😍

I personally love corn in every kind of ramen I eat. I just think corn compliments the different flavors. It also seems to soak up a decent amount of flavor.
I've been cooking my ramen like this for years. I worked as nurse in patients home, long term. I didn't always have time to eat before or after a long shift, so I'd make this in paper bowl, with veg as I brought from home. Really good and fast! Now I have time, but still use shortcut. Thanks Emmy!!
When Emmy said we'd be adding cheese and egg.... my mind gravitated towards a carbonara. In any case, this - I gotta try for myself! .............. yeah, I'd call it 'Carbonara a la Kujirai'. lol.
Nope- very different! But it’s SO good! I was extremely doubtful of the whole “American cheese in Ramen” trick, but decided to give it a try; I’m completely hooked and I don’t know if I can ever go back now 😂 In one of her other videos Emmy also shows how to poach an egg while the ramen is boiling and that was a game changing hack too! I thought Carbonara was Bacon, Alfredo and chicken? We add that to penne along with peas... and it's was always called Chicken Carbonara where I'm from... now I'm questioning all my food names... lol
At some points I think my main meal was instant ramen! It was nice to have some beef slices and bokchoy or some napa cabbage. My mom used to stirfry them as well for the whole family. A hard times food we used to eat was rice with mashed up a hardboiled egg mixed with soy sauce. It was a treat to have banana with it!
I made this today.I can not eat oily food due to morning sickness. But I am hungry most of the time. This was the perfect recepie. Easy to make, tasty and easy ingredients. Thank you so much for such detailed recepies.
So, I have made a recipe very similar to this since I was college in the early 90's. I got a bunch of my friends hooked on "custom" ramen and "ramen and an egg" breakfasts. Ramen can be made with so many items and so many ways that they are such a utility and versatile food that should be a staple of diets everywhere. My daughter went to college and got a whole new generation of her friends hooked on "the ramen life", as she calls it.
ive been cooking ramen in the microwave like this since i was a kid. i put just enough water for the ramen to cook, put the seasoning in with the water that way the noodles soak up more of the flavor and let the noodles sit after cooking for 3-5 minutes so the noodles soak up more of the soup.

I saw this video when it first came out and I wanted to try it, but I'm a bit afraid of trying new things. Tonight I was hungry, had an egg, cheese and shin ramyun (unfortunately no green onions or tiny sausages) so I decided to try it. Popped on this video and cooked along with you. I'm really impressed, this is incredibly tasty. Happily slurping away on my noodles, thank you Emmy for planting this seed in my mind. Also, 250mls of water is enough for a normal package of shin ramyun
I just added some yogurt to my jin ramyeon. I also sauteed the green onion and the spring onion before adding water. I topped it with egg and chilli greens and had it with a side of kimchi, fried luncheon meat and rice. It was sooooo good highly recommended.

Mmmmm! How funny…. I have always eaten my ramen 🍜 just like that and also, those sausages are one of my fave.🤤 Emmy, you sound like you’re either getting sick or getting over a cold… I hope you’re feeling better. Thanks for sharing!🤗
This was incredible! I paired it with sucuk (Turkish aged spicy sausage), green onions, kimchi and lastly, Golden Curry Japanese curry mix - medium hot (didn't have any ramen packets around so this made an excellent sauce consistency). No American cheese on hand either but it didn't need it. Thanks for the inspo, Emmy!
I love ramen. But i always cook the noodles then pour off the liquid, add a little butter and the seasoning packet. When I can get them, i buy the Thai ramen noodles which are a little spicy. I sometimes add a little peanut butter but I will be trying this recipe. Thank you!
I keep buying Ramen because of Emmy. I used to be able to go years without touching the stuff now I seem to eat it at least once or twice a month since she's demonstrated how we can make it so much tastier than just adding water.
This is one of the first times I've seen a video like this, then actually tried it while watching the video a couple days later... I did it on the hob and I overcooked the egg a little but my gosh this is good!! I used regular Shin Ramen :) thanks Emmy!!
This is a real deal winner, deserves the Emmy! 😝 Just finished making my first batch for dinner, writing a few minutes after eating. Used same Ramen pack, following directions per Emmy. Didn't have American cheese on hand, so used two dollops of President brand Sharp Cheddar Pub Cheese. It is whipped and light, spreadable, melts easily. Made a great broth. Also subbed Tillamook brand Original Smoked Sausages, similar to Jack link's or other room temp snack sausage. Same Smoky flavor, worked great. This one's a keeper folks
Just tried this less water/half packet style and it came out delicious! I only had maruchan on hand, as well as green onions and American cheese but I added some sriracha and it came out great! Will try again for the full effect after I have a chance to hit the store!

Hi emmy! i tried the american cheese in the ramen and i am not a big fan but i do recommend putting some babybel cheese! it isn’t as creamy however it goes melt well and gets super stretchy!
I melted cheddar while boiling my instant noodles and bringing it to a simmer and then mixed scrambled eggs in my broth (same amount as yours in the video) and it's just as creamy! So long as the broth is not too much, i guess. I also topped it with tonkatsu and added a little bit of chili flakes and powder. It's so stinking good also!!
Emmy, thank you!! I made this for my nephews while we waited out the tropical storm and they loved it. This was my first experience eating Raman and it was SO good! Also, they sell that brand of Raman in our local Wal-mart so that was a bonus.
I always use the full seasoning package when I make ramen, but for me that extra sodium is part of the reason as I need extra sodium to keep my blood pressure from dropping too much. I struggle with POTS issues (where your heart rate increases by a lot upon standing up and there can be blood pooling in the legs as well, more salt and fluids is part of the non medical treatment of the condition) But then on the other hand, I do use the full amount of liquid needed for making ramen soup, and then I poach an egg in the soup as the noodles are starting to soften up, and when serving I sprinkle some sesame seeds on the noodles in my bowl and a large dash of sesame oil and a bit of Tabasco. In the soup I might add some frozen peas and mushrooms and maybe some meatballs or chopped up hotdog before adding the noodles into the soup as the peas and meatballs or hotdog need a bit more time to cook (from frozen) Because of the stuff I add into my ramen, I actually have it for dinner a lot of the time when I make it. So fast and easy, delicious and a good way for me to cover that salt requirement without having to add salt myself
@@bryanaperry8760 I tend to avoid drinking too much plain tap water because it just goes straight through me and dilutes my electrolyte balance too much. Funnily enough I don’t react the same way if I put some flavoring to the water, so that’s what I normally do with regular water, I also drink Pepsi Max and mineral water a fair bit, especially in summertime I drink flavored mineral water because it keeps my balance better than regular water. Currently sipping on a pear flavored mineral water that naturally contains 210mg of sodium plus other minerals including magnesium (not sure if the amounts are per 1,5L bottle or per liter) because of the well it’s from. I find it helps me a lot anyways along with my full seasoning package in ramen and other salty foods. If I’m low on sodium I tend to get intense cravings for McDonald’s food (most often) or other foods with a relatively high content of sodium and where people are normally recommended to limit their intake of said food lol I tend to like the hidden sodium rather than just putting extra salt on my food, but have also been known to eat crystals of pink Himalayan salt or sea salt straight from the salt grinder

What is yakisoba
@@lilbroccoli9235 Just one of the millions of brands of ramen. I get them for $.80 each by the case. Yum.
I've always used less water and frequently leave the season packet out all together. I add nutritional yeast, avocado, garlic and onion power if I don't have garlic and onion. Then whatever veggies and vegan protein I have. Sometimes I add plain-vegan yogurt to add some creaminess.
Ah! Nooch! Why didn’t I think of this! Thanks for the tip!
I looove putting fried vegan hot dogs and vegan cheese or coconut milk for a healthier option 😊
I was feeling a little bit lazy when it came to cooking this evening and then I came across this video. Luckily I had all the ingredients for this dish (more or less.) Thank you Emmy for a wonderful evening meal that took almost no effort.
You are most welcome. 😄
1. 300 ml of boiling water in bowl
2. Soak ramen in water
3. Put half of soup packet and put all veg packet
4. Cut up sausage into disk and put then into bowl
5. Cover them and put microwave for 1 min.
6. Stir
7. Build little next in middle
8. Put egg and poke yolk with chopstik
9. Microwave 2 to 2 and half min
10. Add slice of american cheese
Whats the hack ? Its just cooking food lol
Emmy - I too WAS (unfortunately) a green onion fiend. But in my golden years I just can't eat them any more without being miserable with heartburn. So I have made cilantro my go to addition and it's really working for me. It gives me that fresh taste and livens up anything !!!
That's so cool to know!
Just made it. Didn't have green onions so I used a little dried onion and red pepper flakes. So , so, so good!
I’m so sorry to hear about your grandma! ❤️❤️
I have literally been making this for over 15 years!! I just made it, didn't know anyone else did this.
*Emmy piercing the egg before putting it in the microwave*
Me: *intense Ann Reardon's microwave egg experiment flashbacks*
Yes!!
Came here to post this 😆
Me too, ugh, yes! How did she make this work if Ann couldn't?
I think it’s because not all the energy is focused on just the egg
@@osnapitzkittyxo3547 i think you are right ^^
Emmy you should make hot dog pie it looks strange but I think it would fit great with your retro recipes
🤪yummmy
Now I have to google that recipe 😊
I think she’s made something similar it was a cake tho
I second this motion. 🧐
@@california7138 Yeah, she's made a 'Bologna Cake' and also made a 'Spaghetti-Os Jell-O Mold' that had the entire middle filled up with Vienna Sausages standing up-right. haha
i always love how simple and relaxing your videos are
It was 3 am when I watched this.
Edit: I tried this again with half the water (150ml) listed in the recipe and I changed the plastic wrap out for the second heating and I had no issues! Still used the Maruchan Ramen and the 1200 watt microwave.
Not me having a Maruchan ramen package thinking about doing this tomorrow 😭😭
@@AliceLiddellReturns lmao bro just cook for a shorter amount of time
@cweldon01 I use both without any problem. Add water to just below the top of the noodles. Absolutely do not cover the noodles with water.
Not all plastic wrap is microwavable, be sure to check the packaging next time!
The egg poke actually doesn't do anything. Anne reardon tested this on her channel last month
Ann cooked just the egg rather than a bowl of food with a (popped) egg. That makes a huge difference. Plus, this recipe calls for a covering anyway
@@Avi2Nyan think I'd take the word of a food scientist though.
I have had a double yolk egg explode in my microwave egg poacher after I had pierced a yolk. Scary sound and some clean up of the lid
Or you could just test it yourself 😉
I've tried it. You have to use a fork and perforate it in a lot of places, but I think it does help.
Microwaving an egg can be super dangerous. Some people have gotten serious burns from it exploding . How to cook that, a baking channel on youtube just did a debunking video where she showed what can happen. Just be careful :)
This is why you poke a hole on the egg yolk before microwaving it! What makes the yolk explode is the membrane accumulating too much steam, and poking that hole prevents that from happening :)
Been poking holes on my eggs for a while now when I microwave them and have yet to see an exploding egg.
OMG I tried this and it came out so good. I'm shocked. Thank you.
Reminds me of high school days. A good reminder to everyone: show your gifts to the world before someone else does it for you.

@@chemistryofquestionablequa6252 yes

So it was a win win, just kind of strange to think I was like 1 mailed letter away from a different life
This is literally one of my fav ramen recipes, and I'm so happy to see Emmy finally trying it!
And putting the flavor packet in half is a must! I did the mistake of putting the full thing twice and it ended up being both too thick and salty for my liking lol
you're like so authentically excited in this video and i totally get why - this looks AMAZING and it has so much to it (like a perfect runny yolk? in 3 minutes?)
I made this for my husband. He loved it! I only made 2 small tweaks: 1 tsp garlic paste and increased the water to 1 3/4 cups. BTW 1/2 a pkg of the seasoning powder is exactly 5g. Thanks Emmy!
holy crap im a 1st timer i was shocked you have almost 3 mil subs holy cow good job....im the king of what i call super noods basically top ramen softened and fried in butter and other ingredients with egg in bowlk my kids love it sometimes ill add some frozen veggies i also do it with rice but i bought a nice phillips auto noodle maker but have really struggled with finding a good recipe so i can make my own noodles my wife has stage 4 cancer so i wanted to make some organic and some gluten free noods but cant seem to get a good recipe....i really enjoy the video so thamks
I just put a plate over the bowl when I microwave anything that needs to be covered
that's exactly what I do. no plastic wrap tomfoolery for me.
how do you poke holes in a plate?
@@jadetorres2973 the plate wont completely seal the bowl up, so the steam can still escape

Yes no plastic directly over food in the microwave. Research the effects and no one will do it again.
Yesss!! The plate trick ❤️❤️❤️
I personally love corn in every kind of ramen I eat. I just think corn compliments the different flavors. It also seems to soak up a decent amount of flavor.
And when paying debts, savings for the future, and life events happens learning simple recipes like this is gold🙏
I tried this recipe and I’ve made it over and over again. Awesome recipe.
love the sponsor you promote, thanks 🥰
I've been cooking my ramen like this for years. I worked as nurse in patients home, long term. I didn't always have time to eat before or after a long shift, so I'd make this in paper bowl, with veg as I brought from home. Really good and fast! Now I have time, but still use shortcut. Thanks Emmy!!
When Emmy said we'd be adding cheese and egg.... my mind gravitated towards a carbonara. In any case, this - I gotta try for myself! .............. yeah, I'd call it 'Carbonara a la Kujirai'. lol.
That’s exactly what I thought, a trashy cheap delicious sounding carbonara
one of my go to recipes is actually a carbonara with ramen!! it’s super fast, easy, and delicious.
Both dfinitely worth a try. Enjoy!
@@thenurseisin that sounds really good! I’ll have to give it a try.
⚠️PSA FOR VOCAL CORD HEALTH⚠️
Talking normally >>> whispering (whispering is more exhausting and harder to achieve for the vocal cords) and when having an itchy/irritated throat
Coughing >> clearing throat (clearing your throat can damage vocal cords if done too many times, especially when they're sensitive)
i hope emmy is okay, her voice was rather shaky in this video and she’s also sitting down so that’s new i guess haha, sending love 🧡
i thought that too!
It was sooooo good highly recommended.
her videos are so comfortable and reliable that just her sitting weirds me out
I love this idea, I will give it a try. One thing my wife does when she reduces the water is she adds 1 TBS of butter and it is Phenomenal.
It is as you said. "Stinking good!"
Giiiiirl! The last ramen hack you shared with “milk” I tried and it was soooo damn good! I tailored it to my liking and added a few I ingredients, now I’m gonna have to try this one. Thanks for the ramen noodle hacks 🥰

Mmmmm!

I love Cooking Haru! The videos are so entertaining. Great to see someone else make one of the recipes ☺️
I love ramen. But i always cook the noodles then pour off the liquid, add a little butter and the seasoning packet. When I can get them, i buy the Thai ramen noodles which are a little spicy. I sometimes add a little peanut butter but I will be trying this recipe. Thank you!
This has been my favourite easy meal, its fun trying different ingredient variations
Just finished making my first batch for dinner, writing a few minutes after eating.
Something about the style of the video, her voice its all so soothing i love her!

Hi emmy! i tried the american cheese in the ramen and i am not a big fan but i do recommend putting some babybel cheese! it isn’t as creamy however it goes melt well and gets super stretchy!
a lifechanger. love you for this. life standard improved forever with this ramen 😭💖
legit obsessed with this now.. 3 meals in 2 days have been this ramen!
That's super cool you got to try it for the first time, there's alot of very tasty variations so have fun!
In the soup I might add some frozen peas and mushrooms and maybe some meatballs or chopped up hotdog before adding the noodles into the soup as the peas and meatballs or hotdog need a bit more time to cook (from frozen)
Because of the stuff I add into my ramen, I actually have it for dinner a lot of the time when I make it. So fast and easy, delicious and a good way for me to cover that salt requirement without having to add salt myself
Nice! :)
Hey i have a sodium defficiency from drinking too much water compulsively, so i do the same thing.
Yum!
This is so sweet! I love your personality and this idea you’re trying is very neat! Thanks for sharing.
Slurp! I could just eat that now! Looks delicious ❤
With the egg, cheese and pasta water coming together to form a sauce, you basically just made Ramen Carbonara.
