- The NFL is testing out the first helmet to be made with 3D printing. Each Riddell helmet is custom-made for a player based on a scan of his head. Former players like Peyton Manning are excited about the comfortable custom fit and potential to make football safer.
NFL players on almost every team are testing out a new type of helmet made with 3D printing. Each Riddell helmet is custom-made for a player based on a scan of his head. Silicon Valley-based Carbon prints seven resin pads for inside the helmet, each with a unique lattice pattern that bends and flexes to the exact shape of the player's head.
Former 49er Brent Jones is an investor, and former Bronco Peyton Manning has tested it and is excited about it, according to Carbon CEO Joseph DeSimone.
This spring, the NFL will release results to show if the new custom helmets are safer than other models. The Riddell SpeedFlex Precision Diamond helmet will be available for purchase at the professional and collegiate level later this year.

Why NFL Players Are Wearing Custom 3D-Printed Helmets
If they can make one to fit Peyton Manning’s squash, they can fit anyone.
I was thinking the same thing🤣 if it can fit Peyton's forehead, it can fit anyone's head
Squash lmao
Not me
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Cool One lolololol
So as soon the the concussion scandal hit the NFL a couple years ago all of a sudden lots of new advanced helmet designs come to market, surely if the NFL really cared about it's players these would have been an ongoing process. Still it's good to see the progress now.
MylesHSG agreed, I hope the NFL disappears
Bryan Santana that’s never happening buddy boy.
Robot football 2040. No brain injuries. No contribution to the incarceration and retardation rate of America. Make it happen Elon Musk!
Alex RUclips
Not in my lifetime, but eventually it will.
Bryan Santana you wish keep crying
This is a great idea, but until it spreads to all levels of football, the impact they may have might not be as great as advertised. By the time a player makes it into the pros, he has been getting hit in the head for over a decade already. So I'm looking forward to see how they will mass produce this idea if in fact is safer than the current helmets
I'm having a hard time seeing how this is going to advance anything within concussion related injuries. My stance is yes it may disperse the impact but the momentum for the hit all goes to your head still which is what causes concussions in the first place.
If the NFL doesn’t plan to make this product mandatory there’s a problem.
MrWhiteVzla Helmets are not designed to stop concussions. They are meant so to stop players from cracking their heads open.
Rose I think, no matter how advanced technology gets, we can never stop concussions. You can protect the brain but you can’t stop the actual brain from hitting the inside of your skull. As far as protecting the head, this is as advanced as it’s gonna get
MrWhiteVzla amen to that I just finished my senior season and I don’t know how nfl players can survive like that
Brady’s still rocking the bucket he wore his rookie year 😂
How about making motorcycle helmets?
Alan Loo they will I die time
I don’t know if a helmet is going to save you when you’re going 80+ mph
If you watched their ad they put out today, they talk about doing it for football AND other activities and beyond... showing bike riding, other sports and so on.
Because the helmet isn't the product. Although the printed tissue lining IN the helmet IS.
My uneducated guess is that the NFL had more RND cash to throw around as opposed to the NATIONAL BIKERS UNION/CLUB/GANG/guys who ride WITHOUT helmets anyways... u get the point
They should make helmets that have a little camera that can look behind you and show you on your protector screen.
Maybe take the opinion of players that bang their heads on every play like RBs, LBs, and lineman NOT QBs like Peyton Manning..
Every player bangs their head linemen do it all the time
Peyton Manning is retired too is the funny part like how is he gonna use a helmet
I was thinking Tom Brady
This was very insightful. I didn't even think of other sports or physical activities such as hockey or skiing plus other work forces like the army or police force.
If you watched their ad they put out today, they talk about doing it for football AND other activities and beyond... showing bike riding, other sports and so on. They plan to bring this to all types of head protection in time.
Looks great! I hope there will be follow up stories as more data on these protective wear helmets becomes available.
They should be making those helmets for the wives/girlfriends of football players, they would make a fortune.
it will be a windfall for them, if they plan to sell them to children, because their heads will get bigger
天吉Mark they should make the helmets so that every year you can send it in to their lab and they can resize it to your current head size when needed so that your investment into a helmet doesn’t go out the window when you or your kids head grows a bit.
More padding = more damage, we've proven this consistently.
Eugene S *Better protection* For one, the NFL has only recently started updating its helmets, so the results of aren’t totally known. Regardless, these updates in protection are being coupled with new/updated rules aimed at player safety (i.e. so players don’t smash their protected heads together)
More padding =\= more damage, it's the way the padding is used (e.g. now we've got helmets we can tackle with our heads, causing a huge long term rise in head injuries).
New rules for safety = less injuries
This isn't more padding it is how the padding for the helmet is made and used.
@Aidan S I think he means when you get a helmet your gonna be tempted to hit with your crown so you can either truck someone or get that big hit if you've ever played football you know that no matter what voluntarily or involuntarily your gonna be banging your dome on that field
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen!!
peyton has been retired lol
Lol I was just thinking about , am like wtf why would he care about the fit aka he's invested in the company
Only pedophiles still use "lol."
@@mamzersdream1 what a weird thing to say
@@mamzersdream1 lol
First Gen Tesla Roadster at 00:20
1 car over is the tesla model S
I heard that the helmets are the safest and it’s just the neck movements that cause most concussions idk I just heard it some where
Great product.. hopefully it's much cheaper because when I played in h.s I had 7 year old helmets.. since I went to public school in chicago they only received duct tape and mouth pieces every year... maybe 4 new helmets and shoulder pads every other year
now this is SCIENCE thanks
Man I remember when the revolution helmets came out..i thought those were the coolest best looking helmets growing up..wanted one in high school soo bad but couldn't afford one lol.
How long do the helmets last?? I'm asking because I'm supposed to throw away and replace my bicycle helmet after any crash!
I want one for snowboarding!
0:31 ha this guy works with Riddell and cant even say Riddell right
If Peyton Manning gets comfortable in a helmet with that billboard on his head I’ll trust it.
Thanks CNBC. I'll invest!
Can this technology be used in motorcycle helmets?
The invention is too incredible I hope more athletes prevent getting injury when this video mentions about the materials Is firm and soft That is really surprising me
Those are pretty awesome Fortnite skins
How many vbucks yea think?
Evariste Galois I seriously need to stop following you.
New Technic is very well
Why does Brett Jones leg look broken at 2:06
The only thing that will make American Football safer is removing helmets. We have a fraction of these problems in Australia and we have 3 codes of football (Aussie rules, Rugby union and league) and don't even try to tell me that there's less impact or physicality in our sports.
Removing the helmet means players protect themselves and adjust how they play accordingly.
It will also reduce the barrier of entry into these sports with less equipment costs.
LFly01 The updates In padding are being coupled with new/revised rules meant for player safety. So in theory: it should force players to play safer AND give them the most protection possible
Absolutely agree!
American football players hit way harder than rugby players😂😂. If you think anything else you are lying to yourself.
LFly01 in football, most concussions are caused by players ramming into the body parts of other players or being slammed into the ground, not helmet to helmet. No helmets only leave room for crushed heads
Rugby tackles are way different than gridiron tackles. Plus, if you've ever played offensive or defensive line before, you'll know the value of wearing a helmet. I live in Australia and have played both rugby league and gridiron. These two sports are not the same. So please stop classifying them as being the same sport.
4:21 so they're gonna be expensive is what you're saying
The price so I can start saving up ?
Starting price is 499 for varsity and 430 for youth
@@brittondookhran9948 no thats just the regular diamond the precision diamond is over a thousand
Imagine different clear plastic colors for the shell
Right so when will D3 get these?
@2:05 "forner player" lol smh.
They can do so much stuff to protect nfl players it may effect the way they play abit but they would be safer.
Lacrosse helmets will need this technology. I am interested
This technology needs to start on Pop Warner leagues everywhere. By the time players make it to the NFL they've been hit in the head hundreds and hundreds of times.
Still getting CTE either way
Somebody explain why theybare talking about a retired qb... Pman aint gon get hit so why does it matter that he like it or not
Instead of messing with the Helmets, mess with the pads, make them a little softer for better absorption which might help with mitigating the effect of a hit
Sergio Buryy Well the helmets are what’s perfecting their brains, which is the main issue
@@gregoropesa5028 Helmets protect the skull. Which in turn can protect the brain however I don't really see how this is gonna change the momentum of one's head. The problem is that the brain goes through hypertension when hit with extreme force giving us concussions. It's not that you get hit in the head really.
in 2018, that's at least 1 concussion PER GAME, and by what it looks like at least 2 concussions after every 5 games
I thought you can’t change helmet at midseason.
You can
They know that Ridell is the only major helmet manufacturer still using foam right?
🤔 Looks exactly like the type of material used in my bicycle helmets from childhood.
Joseph Watkins key word “looks”
Cam -Pretty sure I know exactly what I wrote haha therefore I would know exactly how what I said should be used.
to protect the player is very simple, change the rules.
They’ve made helmet to helmet hits illegal and banned helmets they found to be more prone to causing concussions
Football has so much rules and safety stuff like how you supposed to get hit hard and not feel anything mine as well play flag football
They should make rules that regulate how heavy NFL players can be. Less mass, less force, simple as that.
1:45 then why does Peyton always have that big ass mark on his forehead
Oh She said "Flex" @00:12
Me: Weird Flex Mode On
FLEX TAPE
We be cool seeing helmets that aren’t bulky. Would be cool seeing one strong like the modern one but slime like the older leather one they back then.
I wanna try it
After years of getting shat on by Schutt and Vicis, Riddell is finally coming around
I like how the ceo said manning has had a bunch of different helmets. He’s only been on 2 teams tho
I've been on two teams and use a lot of different helmets you can always change them even if you have the same team
Does nothing to prevent concussions. You can't cushion the inside of your head with a helmet.
Foam haven’t been used in a long time all helmets in the last ten years are all air helmets
What in the concussion
Why would Peyton Manning need one? He retired
He had one before he retired
Okay so then, we’ll take Vicis’ hard shell and Riddell’s inner padding and merge them together and make a Super helmet and we’ll call it Project Hybrid.
Riddell always trying to make it right
The problem is price. A high school team isn’t going to give kids these for free they can’t afford to fit 30 + kids with a $1000 + helmet. Safety will always be a problem for people who can’t afford the latest and greatest
But all the kids get CTE
I don't think it matters what football helmets are made out of. The bottom line is that it's just a violent sport and concussions are inevitable. They said that this technology will be available soon for all NFL and college athletes. What about high school athletes? I suffered from 2 concussions alone my senior year. Plus how many high school concussions go undiagnosed every year? In all honesty, I love the sport of football, but nobody should play it. The human body wasn't designed for that kind of beating. In my mid 30's now, and I regret ever playing. If I had a son, I would steer them towards baseball and basketball if they wanted to be a student athlete.
Be the hammer not the nail 🔨
Football is in every place where the sheriff is. 😎 #Dontdisrespectthesheriff
1) by the time their pro nfl players already have CTE
2) no helmet in the world can prevent brain damage considering the brain rattles on the skull about every play
Motorcycle cycle is their next market.
This what black panthers suit made out of
It’s about how the brain moves in the skull, they are not breaking skulls they are ruining their brains. Probably the best thing would be to remove the helmets and shoulder pads because that would reduce the speed and the amount of Impacts. But If we really care about athletes then all fight sports would ban cloves, back in the day of bare knuckle boxing nobody got knocked out simply because you can’t punch someone’s face without breaking your hand.
Hannes productions The helmets of the 70s were designed to just protect against skull fractures. What their trying to do with these helmets is lessen the momentum (I hope I used that correctly) of the head when it decelerates after the player makes a tackle, thus making the brain not move as violently
A Whale but would one might think they would reduce the dangerous take downs if they had no protection.
How does gloves make it a harder hit
Jase Maiden because the gloves protect the hand which is made up of many small bones
Cool
@hardheadedveterans hmm
Bee block
Is Peyton and investor or did he just try the product?
What a great idea good thing they don’t hit anymore in the nfl
The visis helmet is way better
Looks a lot like vox
I can't wait to see this technology used in auto racing.
i would also like my head to be scanned
Why not just make helmets made out of jello
They say it’s good for kids buts it’s about$1,000
Still doesn't protect your brain from hitting your skull
Eh, more marketing BS. There's been no change in how you absorb and disperse energy. The only thing this tech could probably do is lighter, more breathable and better fitting helmets for NFL players. The better fitting part wouldnt be possible for the average HS football player, unless you could afford to have them scan your head.
Zeitgeist X How do you know what their putting into their new helmets isn’t making them more safe? Are you an expert in the field?
you're right to a certain degree, it might minimize the impact to the brain, but it won't address the acceleration/deceleration of the brain during the impact which is where the problem lies. My friend with a concussion said now even jumping into bed hurts her brain.
A Whale Helmets aren't designed to stop concussions. They are meant to prevent players from fracturing their skull
It’s meant to take some of the energy. That energy would not be going to the head. Similar to how a crumple zone works in cars, if you can disperse energy amongst the materials than it doesn’t go into the cabin of the car.
brain trauma in football is a result of Newton's Laws of motion. as long as the brain is suspended in fluid within the skull rather than anchored, there is nothing that can be done about CTE. Zeitgeist X is correct about that.
They really put Peyton Manning in this lol😂🤦♂️y’all should’ve put athletes from recent years👍🏻
Peytons long retired. Why bother
Helmets do not stop your brains momentum from moving in the skull period.
No aftershocks though.
The brain rattles in the skull REGARDLESS... nothing will prevent that
They should test for steroids too.
I would rather have 3d printed shoes
I'm sorry I cannot get over his droopy ears
How about don't play that sport
Bring it to high school!
This would be essential for making a lighter and higher performance helmet!
Use ultraboost HAHAHA
99%.............?
Jesus Christ.. ....!
I have that helmat
"a much safer product"? yeah, probably not... until helmet tech can figure out a way to stop the brain from striking the inside of the skull upon impact, i'm not sure just how much more "helmet improvements" can be accomplished.
Are we a joke to you?
Just make the helmets kinda like nascar and you won’t have to worry about brain damage anymore
You can't stop the brain from moving inside your skull.
IF YOU WANT TO PROTECT KIDS IN LEAGUES. PRICE THEM RIGHT DONT MAKE THEM WITH DIFFERENT MATERIAL JUST MAKE THE PRICE RIGHT PLEASE!!!
Maybe putting the pad outside would make it safer... Research should show that.
finally a helmet that fits pating mannings head
Peyton*
Peyton Manning is really a good insider he’s really gonna be the best test for real in game test
