  • We believe that housing is a human right. When the urgent need arose to help move 42 Tiny Homes in the Waterloo-Kitchener region and help make 50 “hard to house” homeless individuals live better, we stepped in.
This is a story of the evolution of homelessness, a human crisis heightened by the pandemic, an opportunity to be bold and build community. For more: Www.ABetterTentCity.org

This is a good example of how a community can respond to the basic needs of homeless people in a sustainable , humane and cost effective way. City governments should take note and try to facilitate the land acquisition process which is the biggest obstacle.

Giving people a stable place helps more than just the residents staying there. I've been looking for my biological father for 25 years. Because he had a place to stay, and help with local news segments, I was able to track him down and meet him. Thanks to A Better Tent City and Nadine, and everyone involved for helping me find my father.

There is help for addiction if that help is wanted. I have lived tiny 3 times and loved it! We are getting our van ready to live out of and have plans to travel and start a business. Mama I just want to correct you on your addiction comment there is real help if you have money and can pay the high cost of help but for poor addicts not so much and most are poor. Sorry to inform you but the help isn't help at all it is just taking one drug and placing it with another and in base treatment is just not long enough to do anything so unless you know what you are talking about don't comment on it because help is not there for those who want it, it just isn't.

    • @tammieparrishmiller3669

@@Susan-ms1wm There IS help for those who have the drive to help themselves. If you got the money together to get high and chase that monster every day then you can find a clinic that has what's called a 'State slot' which the last I checked was under $20 for an entire week and yes, it is trading one for another, but the other is legal and you can control your life while you are taking advantage of such measures. If you are serious about helping yourself because NOBODY can help you if you don't do the work, you can actually ween yourself off, and no, it may not be the most pleasant thing in the world, but you can get clean and I DO know what I'm talking about. If it is yourself you are talking about, I wish you the best but the negativity has got to go. There are so many jobs out there now. You don't have to stand tall, you just have to stand up.

This looks like an obvious, practical way to address the problem. If a person becomes unhoused, house them first before addressing the underlying circumstances. In my city Phoenx the city and county have a large amount of resources allocated that they are sitting in, meanwhile we have a tent city that’s crime ridden, filthy and dangerous. It’s not right.

  • @Mach11976

I was in a tent city back in 2007, it was set up outside a Catholic charities shelter. The St Petersburg FL cops came in and tore it down at 5am one morning. They used knifes to cut up tents while we were still in them. There reasoning was drugs. Out of around 60 people 4 had drug's, women with kids were made to stay in the elements. WFLA in Tampa did huge story on it at the time.

So luducrous! If a street was suspected of having a drug issue would the police come and smash people's windows and doors in randomly to find the problem?! In order to stop this kind of abuse and prevent further waste of public resources law enforcement need some serious training. Each and every one of them should be sent one day a week to work with and help communities like tent cities.

And by the way I have 5 years 6 months clean, lot of hurt and pain but I made it.

As an early volunteer at ABTC, it's both wonderful and painful to see the same faces we served 3 years ago. As Laura says, this is the intersection of a drug *and* a housing crisis. Not one, not the other- but both in a wickedly tight embrace. Actually, at the root of both is most often a mental health crisis that more therapists and more meds won't be able to solve.

No one should be homeless EVER!!!! There are enough abandoned and or empty structures all over the world to house everyone!!! It’s absurd that this happens at all!!! The people who built this place are wonderful for doing so and we all should hope that should this ever happen to us, a place like this would be there to help!!!

And truly be happy . If some of the millionaires gave away 1MILLION dollars each you would see a change in the world. From people living in parts of Africa sth America India they would help soooo much . But keeping their £/$/€ BILLIONS ISNT HELPING ..THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. .And to have 6/7 bathrooms you can only use one at a time .and still have to clean your own shit away from your bum when you use them . Be they made of gold.. Ireland says get them to help as much as they can .. when we lived 2 up 2 down back yard loo.we were happy because nobody had more than their next door neighbours...there was nobody out to steal from you..

But everytime I see people demo homes and destroy perfectly good materials that end up in the landfill could be stockpiled and used to build homes for homeless people that would appreciate the structure and save lives ,. Not only save lives but improve lives. How many homeless people who have been discarded as total losses could have been someone that given these opportunities be the next President of the United States or an inventor of a life saving widget or even someone who could have saved a life of a sex trafficked teen. I could go on and on and on.and dont scofff, you don't know either.

In my opinion, people for their state not just community, which government must feed and help them survive. People are valuable natural resource - main resource. If an authorities cannot figure out how to manage this resource keeping people working, healthy, satisfied, so, this is bad management. The authorities have to go to school again to study math, sociology and communication. The problem - too many lawyers and financial in government and they support kind of "virtual resources system" - laws and finance, they don't know(don't care) how to manage natural resources. The virtual economy and wealth based of "constant growth", while natural economy based on saving resources and sustainability. Wrong people have got power.

It would be a struggle. But even if I wanted to go that direction, there are no houses here for that much money. Nothing nada. I fear for the people who have been left behind both young people and also older people who just didn't end up with a bunch of money and a home. Just watched a movie about just called 99 homes. No stairs inside at all to fall off, some tiny homes have no rails, are very narrow and how you going to change the sheets & clean up in the loft when you are eighty and too old to move?? Most of these people are thinking economy no old age. No stairs. My rv is a home and safe and already ready to go or custom same price like buying a vehicle you can always hook on and move not in boxes but with all your stuff in place. Also none of this tear down for one function and then put back or change around to function for something else. Nope I have a porcelain toilet and my shower has three glass doors on it not two. So different & pretty. A huge medicine cabinet with a mirror. So wonderful, I don't change around stuff to live. Mine all just stays in place where it is. Always a place and everything in it's place. Considering that drug rehab has a 97% failure rate; maybe we should change our approach? Considering that most addicts use methedrine so they don't fall asleep and freeze to death at night, perhaps getting them off the street would help? Just saying...

The reason why so many of these people do not know what they are talking about are the differences between the housing crisis and health crisis. You absolutely cannot build a community like the one in this video with hardcore addicts. That is referred to as “transitional housing” where very few active addicts can be housed together in a manner that does not require constant police presence. The only way a tiny house encampment works is with the non-addict homeless which makes up a very small part of the homeless addicts in many areas. However, to discriminate against aiding a homeless person because they suffer from the health crisis of addiction will not be allowed. So you have a total nonstarter for any of the programs this video would otherwise suggest.

I don't know about Canada for sure, but we in the U.S.A. definitely need a whole new (to the majority of our country) way of approaching treating addiction. I believe the best way is how Portugal is doing things. No one wants to be an addict, and the current treatment methods of 30 to 90 days and then you're on your own has been failing for decades. Addicts need long-term and multi-faceted support.

I understand this, i live in canada b.c not far from vancouver and have been in a toxic drug crisis for over 7 years now, "fentanyl" and we have had “transitional housing” for the homeless too for over a decade now, mostly called wet housing because they allow drug use on cite with clean needles and more. So most shelters over here do require round the clock security guards, as most tenants of these places are hard core drug addict's, causing fights, fire-setting, overdosing, and other things that require the police and ambulances on a regular basis, and raise the crime level around the neighborhood wherever theses places are opened. Since that place in the video looks like its run by a church group, i assume they do not allow drug use or condone violence there in any form. which is the main difference between waterloo and vancouver, the media over here keeps calling this situation a housing crisis but in reality it is called like you say a "health crisis"...

All I ever see are new condos being built and they start at like 400k.
Why dont they ever build cheap basic living for people? The demand is huge.
Build cheap and basic.... a roof, some walls, water, a bathroom etc.
Build what most people can afford for fuck sakes.

This is the basic root and seed as many living things are, of America. Once you have lost shelter and food you have not got a country. We are there and import about a million per year when you count the life of foreigner people as families arriving within months. However, we want perfect lives, we want family that will work lol to pay taxes and government. They cannot make enough money to eat, but magical events say they will have wealth a lifetime. Said to say, but when twenty years have passed the neighbors will have laws that will destroy this in some way. The fact is; new coming lives lived these horrors. If they see their plight they might push to have tiny homes as the answer to life. Life has a pushing away point. We do not want elderly, women can only make so much and have only such jobs, people of race live better over there. If you fail never hurt or else you are crazy insane and heavy metals will end your pains. When scientists in the far off future present arms to government let this be a reminder; we are preborn. Do you give your babies food, love, shelter, clothing and such?? Has the sentient sapient declined into an entropy so deep they only know adulterated living where they can kill by ignoring a life??? Most would answer yes.

This video seems rather biased, one sided and amateurish. At times the interviewer seems almost sadistic or at least lacking in empathy. When a person being interviewed becomes emotional he then says something snarky as if to rub salt in the wounds. More than likely inexperienced in documentary film making.
