- This report by Innovation Trail reporter Jenna Flanagan introduces an Ithaca, N.Y.-area man who is trying to make a big impact on the homeless - one tiny house at a time.
Innovation Trail (innovationtrail.org) is a reporting project that aims to help the public gain a better understanding about some of the big issues that upstate New York communities are facing. A great sense of pride and privacy, a place to sit during the day where no one kicks you out, and a chance to lay down if you're not feeling well. These are all things that are denied to a homeless person
Sit during the day? I would think given this opportunity these men would seek to become gainfully employed.

Sitting around during the day is the reason they are homeless, they should be out at work.
A lot of people end up homeless after they become disabled. Lots of homeless people ARE ALREADY EMPLOYED! Sometimes it takes some time to get back UP to a place where gainful employment is possible. @@lovesilk1

Michael Southard Right? Some programs just build a tiny shed and the people are still effectively homeless because they still spend their days looking for a toilet and a wash and food. To function in society and succeed at a job, you need to have these things in your home. This guy is the real deal!
Tiny homes are stupid and in most cases a scam. Building a single unit home will always cost more then an apartment building. There are 4 main parts in construction costs. Material, labor, plot and utilities a single unit uses more material because they don't share a wall or bearing structures, you have to use more labor because each unit requires finishing indipendedly like a roof and it costs more to transport workers from a site to a new site, utilities are cheaper because you don't need separate water, electricity, roads..., And of course since you can get more sqear footage the land is cheaper.
These only cost 15k to build???? Yet tiny house sellers ask for like 80k for something like this.

Jen Tuesday thats normal, its called a profit margin. Its necessary for growth of this movement, theres also taxes and legal stuff. There have been cases in Los Angeles where the local government siezed mini houses because they weren't able to collect tax on them.

@Terry Williams Ya, I know some for California, but California had taken them away (although in the end gave them back) because they were seen as a safety risk. Like having some form of shelter is safer than being on the street. I wish we could have more of these built.

Which will add up to multiplied millions each year;
And buy land and build hundreds of tiny 8x8 homes on each section of land with numerous community bathrooms and shower houses. Each home should have a heater up in the corner with a grate around it for safety. Be built out of concrete with windows and nicely painted walls to make sure these buildings are built to last in and each have a steel bed with room under them for totes, have a bed and dresser plus electric frying pan and crock pot.
Community gardens would be nice if possible. Absolutely no junk allowed outside. Remove junk daily.
Repeat this every single year and do this in every city.
No time limits. Don't kick them out so that the homeless problem continues.
Let them stay it's much cheaper and kinder and hygienic to not kick them back out to the streets.
Give each homeless person bags of rice, beans, flour, lintels, barley, oil, salt and pepper, peanut butter, butter and jam each month. They can also go to the food bank as needed or get grocery store vouchers for volunteering time to the gardens, up keep of the bathrooms and ground, shoveling walks, mowing grass and do forth.
All this would be so much cheaper in the long run than 70,000 per year per person and would actually keep all homeless people safe, dry and warm.
All can be kept out of the cold and have a safe place to sleep and belong and bathrooms and showers.

I agree. The problem is the government. The government doesn't care about the average citizen who has fallen on into homelessness. Hell, they don't care about proud serving veterans once they come home from duty that are on the streets.
State governments want homeless people so they can petition the US government for more money for them to embezzle.

It can cause a lot of pain for decades...Yes, some people are classified as losers. But I think it is important in life that at some point we show mercy to others without judging and/or condemning them. It can be difficult to show mercy once-in-awhile when some individuals caused their own demise. But in order for Heaven to release mercy upon us, we must show mercy: What we bind on Earth we bind in Heaven; What we loose on Earth we loose in Heaven. If I mess up pretty bad at some point in life, I surely would appreciate some mercy. But I would ask myself the question. Did I show any mercy to anyone such that I feel I deserve some mercy? We are not expected to rescue every "loser" as you call them. But can we show mercy for at least one of them?

Phoenix Amazon Here in Florida where I live, it's fine as long as lt's not near my neighborhood, I try to get people involved but, I get the same answer, As long as it'd not in my neighborhood ___the state is crawling with homeless people coming here for the cold winter months.

The problem you have with helping the homeless in Califonia with tiny homes is the government takes so long to approve building on the land. They had a $1200 tiny home project going for the homeless and the local government took those homes and put them in the garbage. The solution might just be to change who you are voting for poverty or freedom. Freedom normally gives you the power to help those in need.

Women veterans with kids need help. Hundreds of programs and homes for men veterans.....yet only 3 NATIONWIDE that can help female veterans.
Heard middle aged women are the growing surge in homelessness, that many people don’t recognise. Many are hidden as they couch surf or live in friends garages, but since they did not have savings or superannuation once they are separated from spouses have nothing to fall back on, after focussing on raising families etc.

One serious problem from where I stand is those who that when they think of housing, immediately think of apartment buildings or 3-4-5 bedroom houses.
About 15 years back, my grandma, who was one of my favorite people ever, was going back home in another province.
I think she knew it was our last time seeing one another.
As she was walking out the door, she stopped and said, "David please learn to live with less".
I didn't understand what she REALLY meant for a few years, until watching a show on people buying homes in far away places.
A couple found the nicest house you could imagine in Costa Rica. It was beautiful and they loved it, until they got to the master bedroom, with 3 piece bathroom.
The master bedroom only had the space for a king bed, dresser drawers and end tables.
The husband was fine, but the wife was insanely upset that the bedroom didn't have the space for couches or a sitting area. The husband said they had this already and have never used it.
She broke the deal and walked away.

Those with too much, wanting more space for things they'll never use,when the $10-20,000. they throw away on nothing, could build one or two tiny warm houses, on small private lots.
Special mortgages and everyone could have their own private homes and governments can get out of the housing business, where maintenance cost run rampant.

I been laid off from several jobs, depleted my savings trying to have a home. Then I had to go on disability. Currently living as a "seniorsitter" in her home, her family, well to do, hardly bother with her, have room for her in their homes, don't want her there, don't want to take turns watching her. That's where I come in. When she goes to nursing home or dies, I have a younger friend who will let me live with his family, I have half my belongings there now. Grateful for that. Wish I had something of my own. I have to live under rules of others. My friend has his girlfriend, two young kids, which like me, but the kids are 2, the other 3, they are very unkept home life. So I have to live under those conditions. When I had my own place, very well kept apartment. If I could get one of those tiny homes, all I need,want. My physical condition, small would be within my ability to keep it clean and orderly.

U can actually own one. Just keep looking into it here on RUclips. There are lots of videos regarding tiny homes here on RUclips. There's even a tiny home community on here at RUclips also.
Can also check out tiny homes thru Google. Prices do vary. The good thing about tiny homes is that they are way more cheaper than most residential homes that cost over $300,000 dollars. Plus the tiny homes come with wheels so U can have them moved or relocated just about anywhere. Another good thing about tiny homes is that built-in solar panels and propane tanks help to save money on monthly Utility payments. With these 2 items, U won't have to pay for monthly utilities. Also just a heads-up, tiny homes are categorized as a RV so if U want to own one, by State Law, the property or land must be atleast within a 1,400 square feet all around. If in case U don't own a piece of property or land, U can check up on Google for cheap properties but make sure the property or land accommodates the 1,400 feet. There's also websites for tiny home loans that U can look into. As far as paying back the loan, the payments are pretty cheap and U can also request an extension on the loan. There's also website links on the tiny home RUclips channels that will guide U on how to file taxes for your tiny home or even how to turn it into a business. Anyways, look into it and hope this information helps out some 4 ya

What you mean at least something being done for homeless there?...Did you hear them say they have 40 area shelters...thats a lot of shelters...most are filled forist with the women who have children as it should be, he said only about 12 live in the tents, only 30 are on the list for a tiny house. Anyone can give or build a home on the property to help any time it moves them so get busy helping today!!!

To have human contact, look for work, talk to friends and family, and to be able to call for help if you are sick or in danger. No contract with a phone company is necessary .... there are WiFi spots to get online, use WhatsApp, maps, job sites.... etc.

I think they can get donations like used appliances and other stuff. A small electric cooktop will cost less than the full stove, and of course volunteer builder or helping hands to cut down costs. I did see some throw away containers being switched into a house, tiny but it works

This is the only men-only shelter programs I have ever heard of. There are tons of women's shelters, no men's shelters. 80% of the homeless are men, and there is little help for them. Thank you for doing this. I wish I could help.

Two years later, I hope the program is expanding. What a good guy for seeing a problem and acting on it. Too bad that big corporations, like Coca Cola (example off the top of my head) could not sponsor tiny house communities because the tax dollars available only go so far. They sponsor tons of fleeting things like sports events, concerts and special events. Imagine if they sponsored permanent tiny house communities. A little advertising would not hurt in exchange for a beautiful and much needed home.

Grog Martin Who? I’m not being a smart Alec, but who should set aside 50 acres and build smaller houses? Builders are going to build what they can sell, and homeless can’t get mortgages. The initial help has to be charity, then hopefully transitioning to independence. Churches used to care for the poor, and most still do. Govt has shown that big housing projects become slums. These tiny houses could be part of the solution, but there has to be ongoing care. They can’t just give somebody a house and walk away because most of them need more guidance to rise from the situation.
Grog Martin noticed exactly what you said, regulations. A lot of millionaires pulled themselves out of poverty. Therefore, they think others should do the same by making wise choices, especially when it comes to things such as drugs and alcohol.
Furthermore, people can’t give anything because someone has to pay the taxes for that land & someone has to pay to build those houses.

God bless all who fight to stay alive. God bless all who have been beat up by the world. Before we go and judge, and look at those who are on the street. Try to put your self in their shoes, and walk a mile with the weight of the world on your back, before you go and judge others. Just by looking at someone, you have no idea, what they have been threw. Have more compassion, and understanding. People do not choose to live on the streets. Just as they don't choose mental illness, and intense living situations. I command each one of us, in Jesus Christ's mighty name, to step out of our comfort zones, and reach out to the homeless, in some capacity. Weather buying coffee, or lunch, and getting to know that person, or volunteering in some way. To help those who are in need. One day, you could find your self, in their situation. You will be surprised at who will help you out. Who will show you the ropes, who will show you where to get free food and cloths, and a place to sleep. God bless each one of us. May the good lord soften each of our hearts, and give each of us a mission in life, that involves helping others in some way. Lord have mercy on our souls, amen.

Brilliant solution to the homeless crisis! Well done! This is wonderful to see the efforts made to solve the housing crisis and to provide shelter for those in need. Changing this crisis, one tiny home at a time! God's blessings on the people who are working hard to make these homes available to the homeless.
This is awesome, I hope that the state government will work together with Carmen to have more little houses built to help more people off the street, esp with winter around the corner.

There are very good people that somehow end up homeless.
Intelligent, sometimes even educated.
But they are often surrounded by the mentally ill, criminals and drug addicts.
It is a living hell for them. Impossible to rest. Impossible to feel safe.
They need a clean and quiet place where they can recover.
I hope Second Wind will go through the effort of finding these people.
I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance.
I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live.
I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit.
I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck.
So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised.
I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts.
I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible.
I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade.
I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school.
I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration.
Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .
I love you! I wish I could find a way to even begin doing the same...it will come. I just have to get well first. Any ideas of kicking a project like this off in new zealand?

Yes the new jungle is behind Wal*Mart.They did shut the jungle down years ago because of too many deaths such as tent fires and drunks falling into the canal. The crumb bums and dregs turned that area behind the the rail road tracks (The original jungle) into one huge garbage dump. Empty food cans, rusty old shopping carts filled up with what else garbage. Empty booze bottles plastic and glass. junked bicycles abandoned tents you name it. The only thing that you couldn't find is any 5 cent deposit bottles or cans because they was always cashed in for more booze. Let's talk about sanitation. They would dump their shit buckets in the weeds instead of digging a hole and burying it like the hobos of old did. And it looks like that area behind Wal*Mart is turning into a dumping ground. Yeah I've lived in Ithaca for years and I know what I'm talking about.
@@reverendfunk5900 That's the thing that bothers me. If they would simply be conscientious about the littering. Here in Western Washington panhandling can get them $200 daily. Holidays they can get $1,000 a day. It's stupid.
