I started the course in February and finished in early June. Then I spent the next several weeks building my portfolio and studying for interviews. I applied to 70 jobs and got rejected by 68 of them.
A few weeks ago though, I was blessed enough to get hired by a small tech startup company and I’m now making $92K a year as a remote UX designer in Aurora, Illinois.
I may be an anomaly and I attribute most of it to being in the right place at the right time, but the key for me was taking the extra time to focus on my UI skills, building a strong portfolio and studying relentlessly for the interview process.
Even though it doesn’t automatically guarantee you a job after completion, the Google UX course helped tremendously in me landing my first UX role and it was because of this channel.
Just wanted to encourage others to keep pushing and most importantly say thank you Aliena! ❤️

As far as education, I majored in Creative Technologies at Illinois State University.
They basically took any topic that was considered “creative” & “tech-y” (ex: animation, sound design) and threw them all into one big major. So I kinda had to sell myself a little on my resume to make it really apply to UX design.
As far as work experience, I worked in customer service at an insurance company, and even briefly made RUclips videos full-time before transitioning to UX design.
I think the key when not having related experience is having something unique listed (such as my RUclips channel). It also helps to focus on how your past experiences will help you in that upcoming role.

I got a job as a UX Designer after finishing the course as well. I took my time though, around 8 months, I fell in love with Figma and wanted to learn more about components and variants, and it's actually because I got really good at components that I got the job; also because of my development background and how easily I can understand the problem and come up with a simple solution.

Thanks for this Aliena! You've convinced me to take the Google course over the others I was looking at. I'm a graphic designer and 5 months ago was made redundant, finding it extremely hard to get work - I hate these Zoom interviews - perhaps that's why! Hoping a bit of a career redirection should help. A bit scared though that a UX designer is more academic than creative in which case I'll struggle again as I rely a lot on my creativity.

It is super frustrating now because of all the tech layoffs. Most are hiring people with 2-3 years experience, even with Jr roles.

Thank you for the video. I like the fact that you advise others to get into the course with the growth mindset. I started the course a year ago. Because I have a day job and I am also learning computer programming as another side project, up till this point I am only half way through the course. Not trying to put myself down and sound too negative: in no way that I can be job ready after I complete the course. I agree with you that the certificate course helps me grow. Also, I think, it is important that people should have a specific goal in mind when taking the course. For me, I am leaning toward user research because I majored in a research related field when I was in college. The plan is to finish the course and to build a portfolio and maybe one day get a job as a UX researcher.

I'm currently in the course and am pretty impressed by it so far. I'm a former Instructional Designer and while there are always areas for improvement, whoever designed the course did a pretty good job considering the cost for the certification. Still, I was getting nervous because I kept seeing people on Linkedin saying you needed an additional BootCamp after the cert to land a job.
I researched a lot of the people posting about this and turned out, most of those people worked for the bootcamps lol. It is great seeing videos like yours that feel more authentic and show you can do things in a cost-efficent way. The fact you give specific tips on where in the course to look for real-life projects is also super helpful. Even the community you've drawn together is awesome -the comments here have also given me a lot of hope and are keeping me motivated. Thanks for starting this channel!

I need to take note and just take a step back and slow down. I work overnights with 2 children, so I am just tired of these long days. Hopefully I can land a job. Great video and subbed.

I am working full time as a graphic designer. Courses 1-5 completed, starting 6. I plan to finish all the courses unlike your suggestion, I want to finish the course. Lots of sitting at the computer. The point well made here is do some freelance work, pro bono to have real life work in the portfolio and that is what I plan to do as well, thank you. I will tell anyone interested in this plan that it requires enormous time and work. If you are working and plan to take the course as I am doing, this means week nights and weekends. Take care of yourself if you choose to do so and good luck.

I am in the UX Program and would like to become a UX Researcher (I have background in Psychology). But, you should consider being a teacher :) I think you would be amazing at it and have a natural ability to convey information and keep an audience (Coming from M.S. Psych grad). Hey Aliena, love your videos! I'm currently apply to so many places at the moment and I was wondering, how do you write a cover letter fast? I've been told that you should write a cover letter for every place you apply. However, with so many places that sometimes span different industries, it can be tough to go the route of writing a templet cover letter.
