    Thanks for this! I was almost at the point of ordering a pump. But after taking apart the float valve and that "this fellow" part, i tested the flow after taking that off and it was normal flow. I let it soak in vinegar solution, washed and blew it out in case there was blockage. Everything works now. Thank you again Chris!

    Bless your heart, your video has solved our problem! We were having trouble with our BES870XL - with pressure at the group head, resulting in incomplete shots and poor crema, and the hot water spout was steaming, spurting and causing a real mess. I replaced a lot of parts - pump, safety valve, solenoid - and we were still no better off. After watching your video I took the machine apart again (I'm an expert now) and found and removed this filter. I put it in a mason jar with 100% Simple Green and immersed that in an ultrasonic cleaner for half an hour at 40ºC. Afterwards it was rinse, blow out with compressed air, repeat - about 5 times - and reinstall. Having made the other repairs I though this one was worth trying and I was hoping for the best but not expecting much. Lo and behold, everything is as new. Thank you so much!

    Thank you for your very good video showing the problem with the BES860. My daughter asked me if I would look at her unit which would not indicate pressure or give a coffee. Like you I suspected either the pump or solenoid. However as these are reasonably expensive and may not give a solution I eventually found your video. 10 minutes later the problem was solved. I actually reverse flushed the filter and now the unit is working well. Up until this stage I had dismantled the unit 5 times with no success. Yes I am retired. Tony

    Thank you for this!
    We were getting very little pressure, a teeny bit of steam, a drip of hot water. Obviously we were not enjoying a nice hot espresso for the last few days.
    Came across your video, and went through the trouble of soaking the solenoid valves in vinegar overnight, didn’t do the trick. So clear the valves were not the problem.
    Then I took out the online filter - BINGO!
    Machine works again! You are a lifesaver!
    Can I send you a bag of beans?

    thanks Chris, this video saved my coffee machine as well.
    Tips for troubleshooting: (got it from home-barista forum)
    Do a run with just the rubber cleaning inlet to see if you get any pressure (I got almost 0)
    Let water run without gasket under to see how the water flow is (compare to video here when ppl do an empty run before making a coffee)
    See if the plain hot water flow is slow as well (compare to friend machine or video on YT)
    Cleaned my filter out with toothpick and banging it on the kitchen counter.

    Thank-you!! This video was really helpful and our inline filter was indeed blocked and the cause of low pressure. My husband was able to blow out the blockage. (I think he used his compressor for that.) The trickiest part was taking the rear cover off. It is clipped in and took a few goes to get it off.

    Thank you for this video. I wasn't getting any pressure until about 30 seconds of pouring the shot. I knew that the pump was working because of that pressure. My water spout also was coming out but very little and the water was splattering everywhere. I took off the tank and the back panel of the machine and saw the inline filter clogged (the one referred in this video). I couldn't find any replacement part and so I decided to clean it. I used an air can that has a straw (the type used to air out dust in electronics) and ran water through it until the water flow was good. The ties are important, use new ties. I couldn't get all the muck completely out, only about 80% of it. That is the cheapest solution. It worked like a charm. I hope this helps someone out.

    • @zarmak2511
      @zarmak2511 5 лет назад +2

      Shane Jowitt yes dirty side is water side as that’s the water entry point so debris collects on that side. I used a small Dremel cutting tool and made a fine slice, it’s not pretty but cuts it open, inside is a small metal filter, this is clogged from dust entering the water fill tank, then with super glue and baking Soda reglued it all back together, zip tie and Your water pressure is back to normal, like a new machine.
      I would recommend then getting hold of Breville and seeing if spare filters are available to purchase, and getting spares. I’m currently about todo this. How many of these machines get thrown out over what could be a $1 filter..?

    Hi . thank you for your video. My coffee maker is a Breville model BES870XL/B unfortunately the pressure does not rise. The gauge is working. The pump worked by taking out an output pipe from it and turning it on, and it had a good output pressure. All the pipes are clean, and I cleaned them twice with special tablets. The steam works and there is no problem. I still could not find the problem. If I find it, I have the possibility to repair it. I have two guesses, one is the external stream ring and casket and the other is the solenoid valve.
    In the first case, the device has no leaks at all, neither internal nor external pipes. Thank you for your advice in advance

Even with blind disc inserted there is no pressure on the dial after 50s. I sometimes hear gurgling. The solenoid looks in good condition. However I can see some water on top of the valve that sits above the pump itself .. could this be due to a block?

    Hi Chris :) Great video and so informative how you pointed out what every part is called! I too have this exact machine (BES860XL) and am getting ZERO pressure readouts...….. The needle does NOT even budge! Let me start at the beginning really fast. I bought this unit second hand recently and could not get it to dispense water either for espresso or to make steam for milk...….Although it heated up fine and all the right sounds were being made by the machine (like trying to draw up the water out of the tank), still, NO WATER ever came out the grouphead after like 30 40 seconds of running it. Also when I switched to "froth" mode, it tried to suck and made the clanking noise, but still no water or steam. So I took it apart (love taking things apart LOL) and figured it must be a clogged water line since it sounded like the pump was trying to work. I decided maybe its clogged with calcium buildup, or maybe it just needs to be primed..... In any case, I used a giant syringe (like a turkey baster) and had to put some muscle into it in order to force water into the tube (the one that feeds from the water tank). I suctioned my syringe back and force with no luck and then something finally gave way and I was able to get water to flow from my giant syringe into the tube and into the machine. Then I added an extension to the short water tank tube and placed it into a separate cup of water and turned on the machine- IT WORKED and water flowed to make coffee and also to steam!!!! Beige colored water and some sentiment came out but I was thrilled. **** My question is, do you think that whatever was clogging my water lines is now pushed into that inline filter you removed in your video? Would running a bunch of vinegar through it fix this issue or do I have to open this unit up again and remove the inline filter? It does make espresso and all, but there is also ZERO pressure readout as it is making the espresso. I know it can taste better than it does now. Please advise you opinion :) Thanks, Nicole

    • @chrismelin6337
      @chrismelin6337  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Nicole, it doesn't sound like an inline filter block now that you have water flowing and could be a pressure leak elsewhere. To diagnose if the inline filter is the problem you can remove it re-connect the water pipes without it installed - this is how it is shown in the video. Then at least you'll know if that's the problem or if there is a pressure leak elsewhere. I imagine it may be a pressure leak elsewhere and you could start by checking the small rubber o-rings on each of the teflon water tubes. Sounds like the pump is OK since you get water and steam, so if it's not the pipes, then it may be the over pressure value or the solenoid that need replacement. I bought the solenoid block from Breville for about $140. I had to call and order over the phone as it is not readily available online. Good luck!

    • @ellerystickle3125
      @ellerystickle3125 5 лет назад +2

      @@chrismelin6337 Thanks so much for your reply! Actually there was no problem with the pressure gauge after all...….. I thought it was broken because it failed to move during the "pressure test" that the Breville guy had me perform while I was on the phone with him. Yesterday, my new filters arrived (I bought my machine second hand and it only included the 2 cup sized, single wall filter)….so this AM I used the single cup sized, dual-walled filter & brand NEW COFFEE BEANS and I got a big crema on top and the pressure gauge magically came to life!!! I was so happy :) Before, when I used the older beans and the 2 cup, single walled filter the coffee came out black with no crema- so I can only assume the "broken" pressure gauge was due to my inexperience in choosing good beans, grind amount, grind fineness, filter size. Thanks again!! nicole

    • @chrismelin6337

      Hard to say. Clean your group head for a a start and work back from there to the water source. Try the cleaning function too - turn off, then hold the one and two cup button downs and press the power button - the cleaning cycle takes about 5 minutes. Sounds like boiler/thermoblock is OK given you can get steam but if you live in an area with hard water, you may need to descale the machine. Other options, bypass the inline filter to check this is not the problem or try to clean the flow metre (I've never done the latter). Check all the pipes are in good working order (see this video for help: ruclips.net/video/3KBRrLc21lA/видео.html&ab_channel=Aju%27sCafe
      Replacing water tubes and seals is quite cheap and easy. If you do this, suggest you also replace the over pressure value. This is something that will improve old machines so worth doing. It's also quite easy. I already open the machine and checked the pomp and it works. The same thing happens when i open the steam (water poors out of the bodem of the machine) ? • @chrismelin6337
      @chrismelin6337  4 года назад +1

      It is normal for waste water to go out of the bottom for every cup, so this in itself is not the problem but I suspect there is a blockage elsewhere or a solenoid failure. This video by someone else on RUclips explains it well: ruclips.net/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/видео.html The quick fix might be to simply decalc the machine and you will see suggestions online such as warm water in the reservoir with decalc solution, citric acid solution or even vinegar - which after you've solved your problem you need to flush well to get rid of this. The fewer chemicals the better in my view. Based on what you say, perhaps 3 available courses of action. 1) Check all the teflon water tubes to see if you can see a blockage in them. The can all be removed and re-inserted fairly easily (don't lose the clips or the o-rings). If the o-rings have perished, then you may need to replace these as the pressure/water can leak out. 2) If the teflon tubes are OK, the blockage could be within the thermoblock (ie the boiler). The thermoblock is solid aluminium with a concentrically curled stainless steel tube in it for the water to travel in. The only way to unblock this is by forcing a solution through it to push a blockage out. 3) If the theromoblock is OK, that is, water runs through it, then the problem may be with the 3 way solenoid. The solenoid valve should change to allow water/steam to travel in the right direction. Again, see this ruclips.net/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/видео.html If the solenoid is not working then it could be stuck in the position to let the water go down the waste pipe where it collects in the drip tray at the bottom of the machine. There are some people out there that know how to test and fix the solenoid but I'm not one of them. I did take mine apart to clean it but I have no idea how to test the magnets. The solenoid is sold as a whole assembly so you replace the magnets and both valves. I bought mine from Breville for about $145 from memory and I had to call them and order over the phone. This was in Australia. Good luck.

    First off...this is EXACTLY what has gone wrong on two machines for me. For those asking how to clean that little filter - its pretty easy. First (and this is sort of gross), put the clean end into some water, and suck on the clogged end until a little water moves through. Then just bang the dirty filter side down on a counter top for a bit. Coffee bits and debris will slowly start coming out. Repeat a few times and boom - its clean. I do not recommend cutting it open and trying to glue it shut - no need for that. You will need a couple of small zip ties to put it all back in when you are finished - so find a couple. It's an easy fix.

    Hi! I just bought this same model from Goodwill and I took out the inline filter and still there is no suction. My pump is vibrating/buzzing when I push the 1 cup button but there is not water anywhere in any of the pipes in the back and pressure meter on the front doesn’t move. I tried using a syringe to push water through water tank pipe but it is met with pressure and won’t go past the flow meter. @chrismelin6337  4 года назад

      Have you tried disconnecting the water pipe from the boiler and then running a cup to see if it makes it's way through the pump? If not, then problem is likely a blockage in pump, flow meter or pipes/filter between tank and pump. You could remove the filter in the tank temporarily just to eliminate that as a cause, but that is unlikely to cause an issue

    • @chrismelin6337

      That does sound like a bad seal. I presume you mean the water comes out the top of the portafilter. While you are fiddling, you can also remove the screen on the group head and clean are re-install this. This is only one screw, so rather simple (see upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fb/Grouphead.jpg/220px-Grouphead.jpg ). If you have installed the seal well and it is the correct size, this should eliminate this problem. This made sound obvious, but the basket needs to be in the portafilter. You could also try winding the grind size down so the water can more easily flow through the portafilter and basket. Remember to adjust the grind size while you are grinding.

Also, when I turn on the machine, I have a humming (muffled, not sure how to explain it) sound (before it was louder). I did a pressure test with the cleaning disk wrapped in plastic foil, and I see the gauge moving for a few seconds. I removed the inline filter and clean it, and water is flowing without any problems. Also, I found a spring in the hose between the water tank and the inline filter, is it normal? If the pump is broken, can I still get water through the head?

    • @MIPSAustralia
      @MIPSAustralia 3 года назад

      Hi Doru. Hard to diagnose. I think you could try testing the pump while it is in the machine. If you disconnect the teflon pipe that goes from the top of the over pressure valve from the bioler (disconnect from boiler - see number 1 in this diagram wiki.jmehan.com/display/KNOW/Breville+Barista+Repair?preview=/21135518/21135521/IMG_3757.jpg ) you can then try to run a cup and see that you are getting water from the pump (you can direct the water into a cup or any other container). If you do this and there is no problem, the issue could be in your boiler (thermoblock in your model I think?) or more commonly, the solenoid valve assembly - in which case, probably easier to replace it. If you don't get enough water in your cup, then you know the problem is between the over pressure vale and the tank, which narrows it. The most common issue is the the pump, which you can replace but you can also try bypassing the inline filter. Suggest you remove the filter in the tank while testing too to eliminate this as a cause. Good luck!

The issue with this machine is that is not always heating , I get a first espresso hot, then it stays in heating mode, but next shots are all cold. I have to stop and start the machine, sometimes multiple times to get again a hot shot. Do you think it's an issue with the thermoblock or maybe an electrical contact?

    Flush it in contra flow under the tap. Then you can soaked in vinegar for 15 min. Then flush it again.
    Put short rubber pipe on clean side and tapping on the sink rotating the filter. Gunk become loose so you can flush it out.

      Since you get water, sounds like the pump is OK and no blockages. Might be a pressure leak. And given it does work after 5-10 tries this leads me to think that once it's hot and everything has expanded, the pressure is contained. I'd start by disconnecting your Teflon water hoses and checking the little O-rings. Failing that the solenoid could be the problem. If the steam works, this might not be the case but could still could be. I had a similar problem with my own and it turned out to be the inline filter, so I think that is worth looking at too. Attaching the water reservoir was also a little different but once I figured it out, it too was easier. This new one has the auto off feature but is not programmable like the old one. Only three cup sizes instead of four. The odd thing for me was how much lighter in weight this one is compared to my old one. More plastic and much less metal in the construction of this one. Hi, Got a BES870 used and sold as condition unknown in an auction. Initially no water flowed at all. Put a straw in the water inlet aperture and sucked and got some water flow but not much. Also tried that technique of removing and replacing the reservoir quickly with the machine on and hot water in the water tank. This seemed to affect the noise the pump made at times, as if something was improving, and the occasional drip from the water outlet did drip more, but I couldn't get beyond that stage despite a few hours of trying. I also notice a lot of water collects in the tray area, presumably from the outlet inside the machine or diffuser.
    Pretty expensive round here to get the machine checked and diagnosed, and then the repair cost on top of that.
    Does it sound like it could be a really bad air lock or maybe something else given that quite a lot of water after 2 hours of trying with the straw accumulated in the tray? Also, I can't get the rear cover off -- there are 5 screws at the back on the side but just 1 instead of 3 on the horizontal part of the rear cover. I have tried some force to unclip it but the unclipping at the top does not seem to release the panel so I can remove it. I wonder if there are other screws somewhere to release the back cover that the reservoir slips to? Videos on YT show 3 screws at the back, mine has just 1.

    • @chrismelin6337
      @chrismelin6337  5 лет назад

      Not sure why the back won't come off. The plastic does flex quite a bit. I found some water damage had rusted screws in place on the bottom section of my model and so I had to drill these out. Keep fiddling, I think you'll get it off. There are quite a few videos that show this, so search around again for another one. You need to take the top off too and disconnect the cables that join the top. When you do get it off, to test the pump, disconnect the teflon water tube that connects into the top of the boiler and temporarily direct it into a cup (you can see I point this out in the video at one point). Then turn the machine on and try to pour a shot. This should diagnose if the problem is the pump or potentially earlier, eg water flow meter or tank-to-pump filter, as it was in my case. To make the machine run, you need to connect the electrics for the top again, otherwise it doesn't function - I think that's just a safety thing to ensure it is properly earthed. Good luck.

I had to get the tube in and out via just the top cover removed. very fiddly and I had to suspend the clips on cotton in case they fell in! I just couldn't get that back cover off, it definitely felt screwed in somewhere else and I couldn't risk breaking the panel. It was quite a 'mare. When I put the cleaned tube back in, the machine behaved exactly as before - no improvement. It wasn't until I had the idea to put a strong solution of citric acid in the tank and run the machine briefly several times over a few hours that it all changed. The machine started to work after an hour or two of the citric acid circulating and I now get fab coffee out of it. I was absolutely gutted when it didn't work after I put the unclogged tube back in because the repair shop wanted a lot of money to fix it. That’s where I’m at. I still took it apart and no obvious reason yet as to why I have excellent water flow but the pressure is 0. Usually you could tell right about when it would start the extraction and on mine it just stops right before that point.

      When I made this video I wanted to address the inline filter problem as that was my problem and I thought others would have the same issue. I had observed there are already much better produced videos online than mine that demonstrate the removal of other parts including the back and top. This is why I did not bother showing the disassembly from the very start. For example, see this video: ruclips.net/video/V-WCjDRRFFw/видео.html Best of luck with your own machine.

    That part looks more like a non return valve to me.

      You may just have some air trapped in boiler. I have seen posts online about bleeding the machine to flush it out. Maybe just try running 5 out so cups to see if water eventually comes out? If your seals are good and you've reconnected the tubes correctly, not sure what else could be the problem.
