This pinned comment has some troubleshooting tips for Breville/Sage 870XL and similar espresso machines If you have any tips to add or topics not covered, reply to this comment. SAFETY NOTES: - Be careful inside the machine, there are exposed live electrical connections inside - Unplug the machine before working inside - You may need to peek inside with a flashlight while running the machine to observe where water is flowing or to check for leaks - Playlist with all videos: ruclips.net/p/PLpY2FP1a9tisyIfKjSugexoVK01xQuptv - Photo album with more details: photos.app.goo.gl/bN1ugnLPYwvyDcr59 The basic idea for troubleshooting problems with the machine is to "follow the water". Start at the tank, then follow it's flow path and where it either stops or goes the "wrong" way is where the problem lies. See below for details: WATER FLOW: Follow the water, find out how it's going to the wrong place, then figure out why: - Starts in the tank - Flows through a small in-line water filter That can get clogged, clean or replace - Through the flow meter If that fails you're machine won't stop at the 1-cup or 2-cup setting - Into the bottom of the pump That line can have air leaks and that can prevent the pump suction from pulling in water - Out the top of the pump The pump can be worn and not be able to prime, move water or produce enough pressure Ulka pump rebuild kits are available as are new pumps - Through the over pressure/safety valve (plastic part with a knob and hose off the side) That can be set for too low a pressure or if can have debris inside that causes a leak to the drip tray - Through a tube to the thermo-coil then out of thermo-coil down to the side of the 3-port solenoid valve Either tube can be connected wrong or plugged inside or an o-ring is damaged or missing The thermo-coil could be clogged internally, try blowing air through forward and backwards to check - For a brew cycle, the 3-port solenoid valve must open fully This will seal off the top port, that otherwise send water to the hot water/steam valve This also opens the side port to send water up to the group head If this valve is clogged and doesn't fully open, water will take the path of least resistance - The 2-port solenoid valve needs to be closed to seal off it's side port which send water to the drip tray That valve may be getting power all the time and/or it may be clogged inside, preventing it from sealing Easy test is to disconnect the wires to the solenoid and test If it still leaks, open up the valve and clean it in descaling liquid It opens at the end of a cycle for ~30 secs. to purge hot water out of the machine - For a hot water or steam cycle, the 3-port solenoid valve must be closed fully If water comes out the group head in hot water or steam mode, the 3-port solenoid may not be fully closed It could have deposits inside preventing it from sealing off the side port Open up the valve and clean it in descaling liquid It may be getting power all the time and sending water to the group head Easy test is to disconnect the wires to the solenoid and test - No flow or pressure too low: If you don't hear the pump run at power on or while running the machine, pump may not be running Wires may not be connected properly Thermal overload (Klixon) may have popped Driver (Triac) on the main PCB may not be sending power to the pump, check voltage If you hear the pump running but no flow of water or too little pressure: Pump internals may be worn, rebuild or replace the pump Over pressure valve may be leaking or set to low, sending water to the drip tray Water may not be getting to the pump, clogged inlet filter or flow meter or air leak in tubing Check all the lines for clogs or leaks. ELECTRICAL: - Machine trips GFCI/RCD breaker A solenoid coil (black plastic cube on top of the valve) is a likely cause It may have had water dripping on it, leaving conductive deposits This can create a short from a live connection to one of the metal parts It may have overheated and cracked leading to a connection to metal parts If this is the case, replace the black plastic solenoid coil (see below) - Solenoid doesn't turn on Wiring hooked up incorrectly, e.g. maybe the solenoid wires have been swapped Solenoid coil may be burned out internally, a resistance/continuity check would tell if this is the case - Try swapping the coil with the other solenoid valve and see if starts working, if so, replace the coil - These coils seem to be similar, if you can find a similar brand valve with the same voltage Main circuit board (PCB) may be damaged and not sending enough current to turn on the solenoid - Voltage check at the coil; voltage significantly less than your normal line voltage, this may be the issue - Solenoid runs all the time Coil will feel warm/hot to the touch after the machine has been plugged in but not used for a while This will cause the water to only flow to the group head, even in hot water or steam setting Likely cause is the driver (Triac) on the main PCB has failed in the on state, powering the coil all the time - Easy check: Disconnect the wires to that solenoid coil and see if it stays in the off position If this information has helped you get your machine working, there are links to BuyMeACoffee and Paypal.me on the channel About page if you feel so inclined.
Hi @the4crawler thanks for this information it's really helpful 🌞 But I'm still having issues in getting water through my group head. I have replaced the solenoids, the water pump, the triac, given it a good descale and also pulled the group head out to make sure its not blocked but when I turn it on the water still just goes to the tray when I push the 1 or 2 coffee cup. The steam and hot water works fine. It seems like there is no power going to the solenoids for some reason🤷♂️ Would you have any idea what Am I missing? Cheers for your help
@@troyvidovich375 For an espresso shot to work, the 3 port solenoid needs the coil powered on to seal off the top port and to send water to the group head. 2 options are that water is going out the over pressure valve to the drip tray or it's going out via the hot water/steam valve which, if off, send water to the drip tray. If the latter, then that would indicate no power to the solenoid. You could check for voltage there, that's where the indicator LEDs I installed on my machine help. It may be there's an issue with the wires, broken connection some place. Or the repair on the circuit board has an issue: photos.app.goo.gl/Kg12KYvEd4dfV92X6
@The4Crawler Hi mate thanks so much for your reply information I truly appreciate it mate 🙏 There is definitely no power going to the solenoids as I unplugged the wires and tested them with a volt meter also I turned on the 1 and 2 cup and the water went straight to the tray. So I have now ordered a new power board as you have suggested it maybe the triacs so hopefully this is the answer.👍 Thanks again I will keep you posted👍
I can’t get any water out of the group head for espressos. Hot water spout and steam working fine. I replaced entire solenoid block, no change.Using your brilliant guide, I think I can deduce that it’s the pipe that runs up from between the solenoid valves into the group head. No water comes out of here at all when 1 or 2 cup pressed. All other areas of the flow seem ok. Do you know what could be the cause and any possible fixes/solutions?
I’ve been looking for information to help me confirm my suspicion of the same issue. Glad we still got some old school engineer out there taking the time to help others. God bless from the UK sir !
Thank you for the explanation. I bought a machine like yours a couple of months ago and the grinder already got broken (a small stone came with the beans, jammed it up and broke the gear). I didnt have any idea these machines were so sofisticated and have so many parts. I love it. Another thing to add to my list of DIY projects :)
I guess I've been lucky with my grinder, knock on wood! Replacements are available, p/n: SP0023159 And no problem using another grinder with the machine. I even use regular ground coffee from the store with the dual wall filter for day to day coffee.
One of the best videos on explaining how an espresso machine works. There are so many videos on how to repair but very few on explaining the flow of operation. I just troubleshooted and fixed a friend's BES860XL in no time. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! I was a bit uncertain how the machine worked when I first replaced the solenoid valves. But then after figuring out how those 2 valves worked after I cleaned them, the water flow in the machine made sense.
Was able to diagnose and fix my breville thanks to this video and explanation of the water path. My 3 way solenoid valve orifice was clogged up with mineral deposits causing a lack of water to be dispensed.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I own an ultima cossa espresso machine that basically it's very similar to yours. After doing extensive troubleshooting based on your recommendations, I put it back together and decided to do a very deep descaling procedure FIVE times in a row till I finally started getting a full stream of hot water out of the group head and the wand. I believe the main issue was a build up of hard water in the system. Once Again, Thank you sir for taking the timing by posting this invaluable information. Cheers.
Glad you were able to get your machine running again. Have heard that running multiple descaling cycles can free up a stuck solenoid. I found I had to take mine apart for cleaning: ruclips.net/video/eljHS_BRJXk/видео.htmlsi=ZlYma7_TtcD7y29g
Outstanding walk through! You took time to explain even minor details. I appreciate that. The details are important. It seems like so many videos people make, they just rush through and try to hit bullet points; this just leaves me with lots of leftover questions. Thanks for being thorough!
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, try to cover all the details I thought were important. It seems so many viewers just want the main bullet points. But it's often that item that was left out that had the key bit of information needed to troubleshoot an issue with the machine.
Thank you for posting this. It helped me solve my issue. I had no flow/ no pressure to grouphead or wand/hot water. Took the line out of the thermo coil and tested the pump was working. Took the bottom hose out of thermo coil and one of the ferules was clogged with hard water deposit. Back in business
@The4Crawler I have no flow to the group head, hot water nozzle or steam wand. About to start my repair journey, fingers crossed its only a clogged line. Unit is only ~2.5yrs old Thanks for taking the time to detail the skematic operating directions, extremely helpful
I’m back Mr Brown. I replaced the solenoid block and pump on barista express a couple weeks back due to your video so thanks again for the instructions on how to get back pressure. I got my hands on a Breville infuser that was giving slight pressure on the gauge around low pre infusion stage but never more than that. Like the barista express I fixed I ordered the solenoid block and pump because the solenoid block on this infuser was busted open like a corroded battery when I opened the back. I always had steam and water coming from the wand and hot water spout but when I started it back up after the install, now I get no pressure at all, even with the cleaning disc and lower amount of water coming through the group head. I took it apart again an cleaned all the tubes going to the boiler and checked for limescale or broken o rings. Put it back together, still no pressure and again low water after I used to get the right amount of water but just low pressure when I first got the machine. Thoughts? I’m stumped at what to try next. Thanks in advance!
Might be a few things. See if you can peek inside the back cover while running a cycle. Be careful as there are exposed, live electrical connections inside. But see if you can see where the water is flowing. Maybe it's going out the over pressure valve that's above the pump. Or maybe the water tubing is hooked up incorrectly. Common mix up is to swap the line out of the top of the 3-port solenoid, that runs to the hot water valve, with one of the other lines.
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to post this video. I had a problem with water coming through the filter head (think that's the right name), as soon as power was switched on, and no flow through either the hot water output or the steam wand. I had no idea of the flow through the machine, but once I watched your video everything was clear. Diagnosed a stuck 3 way valve, stripped it down and voila! One valve stuck in the open position with limescale buildup being the culprit. A soaking in white vinegar and a quick rinse with water and all is now well. Thanks again, much appreciated.
Great job on troubleshooting and repairing the problem! Yes, understanding how water flows through the machine is key, with that you can usually figure out where the problem is. Mine was just the opposite, the 3-port valve was sticking closed and not sending pressure to the brew head.
@@The4Crawler Thank you soooooo much for posting this. I am awaiting for the right screwdriver to be delivered but watching this video I already know what is likely wrong with my Breville Barista express. No matter what I do with the steam/hot water switch, everything comes out of the brewhead. Like Mike and yourself, I think the 3 way valve is the culprit and is currently stuck in the "brewhead" position. Given the hardness of the water here in Paris, pretty sure my valve is made of limescale at this point. Thanks again ! I 'll keep you updated guys
Well - it didn't work out - still no steam from the steam wand :-/ I wanna replace the whole solenoid assembly at this point, but living in France and owning a US unit (I brought it back with me) the only source I identified for that piece in 120v is www.ereplacementparts.com/solenoid-valve-assembly-p-629955.html. 105 euros with shipment, I am almost ready to do it...still though, it's almost 20% of the price of a new unit after only 2 1/2 years. Anyway, thanks again for the great video @R Brown
I have the same issue with my machine, but mine was dripping through the drip pan from the moment you turn on the machine. And I also noticed the boiler won't stop running (probably not building enough pressure in the tank). My guess is that the solenoid for the drain is busted. From the video you shared, I think I will have an idea to troubleshoot my machine. Thanks again for this informative video.
Hey there, I have the exact same problem but I cant find the problematic part, can you please share with me the timecode of when we see the related part in the video. Thanks
Thanks a million for taking the time to make this video. I especially appreciate your efforts to name the different components by their proper name. It makes finding replacement parts on-line a lot easier.
You're very welcome! I did spend a fair bit of time researching the names and functions of the various parts as shown on the ereplacementparts web site to try and get them right for the video. In fact it was that process that helped identify what some of the parts were for.
Very useful video for problem solving. For a couple weeks, I have had low shot pressure and weak steam. After viewing your video, I have a much better understanding of how everything works/flows, and I have confirmed that my problem is the safety valve. Whenever I pull a shot or use the steamer, water escapes from the side of the safety valve into the drip tray. Hence the lack of pressure/steam. I'm happy that I finally figured out this problem with your help. Thank you!
@@The4Crawler... my problem was the small water filter between the tank and the flow meter. The unit operated fine for several years but now it seems to need servicing of the filter every six months. I find removing the heat sink in front of the flow meter helps with access. A couple of cycles through an ultrasonic cleaner make the filter perform like new again. Unfortunately when I was blowing out the tank-to-filter hose after cleaning, the spring went flying off to God knows where.... it doesn't seem strictly necessary though, so I am trying for a while without it. It's amazing how much the flow is improved by cleaning that little filter. Thanks again!
Mate thanks for that explanation. That helps greatly. I found one of these BES870 machines at my dump today in the mud so brought it home. And judging by your videos it looks like the solenoid is bad. I'm getting no pressure and no water flowing over the ground coffee. The steam and hot water flow part work fine though. So I'm going to try and fix it rather than buy the entire unit. In Australia you're looking at $120! Thanks again you're a champ!
I have enjoyed my Barista Express for 4 years and thanks to videos like this one, I can maintain it and ensure it always makes the good coffee I enjoy every day. Thank you and keep them coming.
R Brown quite easy with the help of videos like yours. To be honest, it is empowering to have access to replacement parts and instructions to install them.
Had an issue with a Breville Barista Express where hot water would flow through the steam wand and the dedicated outlet, but not the group head. Your video provides valuable info on how water flows through the system. As you point out, the solenoid value is a common failure point, and based on the symptoms I was seeing, the metal plug was stuck in the down position. I removed the tube on the valve as well as the two tubes on either side, dropped white vinegar through the ports, and let it sit for awhile. Also tried to clear any blockages with a thin pick. Put it all back together and water immediately started pouring out of the group head. All fixed, without any new parts. Since I recently moved to hard water country, I suspect the metal plug became calcified a lot faster than I expected. Will have to use better water and clean/decalcify more often than I did before. Thank you for a great video!
Best video I've ever seen on this. Applicable to oher models as well, they all use similar principles. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Even the audio alone was gold!
thanks to your videos i was able to repair my Solis Grind and Infuse Pro 115A , which is the Dutch/European version of this machine. In my case, there was no water coming out of it, not with the coffee function or the hotwater/steam function. The problem was the tube between the hotwater boiler and the Solenoid input, the 'knee'., where the hose entered the knee it was full of scale and stuff. Then when i got the hose of the boiler 'WOOSH/SQUIRT' all various scale and goo came out of the boiler. Cleaned it all and it is working like a charm now!!
Thanks, this water flow video and then this solenoid disassembly helped me fix my machine that was barely two years old. The first time I had an issue about 6 months ago after a descaling, the steam wand wasn’t working the next day. I took it apart then trying to figure it out, I squeezed the tube coming from the Steam/hot water switch that I now know goes to the diffuser and saw some water move around in the tube. I then powered the machine up to test the steam function while I was watching the tubes inside and the wand was working again and I did not have an issue until about a week ago (about 6 month after the steam wand issue and 3 cleanings I think). I think the squeeze must have been just enough to bump whatever may have causing the problem. . Then last week after a descale and clean, two days of normal use, on the third day nothing was coming out of the group head except a drip and no pressure building up. The Hot water and Steam were still working. So tried the 'squeeze method' again, but this time didn't fix. After many worthless searches, I found this water flow video first, then watched the how to replace the solenoid and then the solenoid repair video. Based on my symptoms and my understanding of the water flow from the video. I suspected the three-way valve (one on the right when looking into the machine from the back). On mine there was an e-type retaining ring that was inserted from the back to the front on this valve so I was able to remove it without taking anything else off. I unscrewed the top threaded water connector that goes back to the group head leaving it connected on both ends, (because of the way it is put together, the small tube turns freely while still connected to the threaded connector that attaches to the top of the valve assembly). I then disconnected the wires and was able to remove just the solenoid. In my case I had to use needle nose pliers to remove the slug because it was not falling out as I learned after cleaning is what it should have done. I cleaned it, soaked it in store bought descaling solution for about an hour and reassembled. Slug moved freely inside of the threaded sleeve. Reassembled the solenoid and reinstalled into the machine, tested and was super happy. Thank you so much for the videos.👏👍
Great video, thank you for taking the time to upload this. Need to dive into my BES870 to investigate a very loud buzzing and no water pressure from brew head or water, so I suspect the 3 way solenoid you describe is my first port of call. Thanks from UK
Thanks for the very informative video. I have had my breville for 6 years with no issues. My hot water and steam wand is working but no water through the group head just dumping straight to purge drip tray. I presume I have a bad solinoid. A common water leak I found is the elbow connector which I have replaced. Thank you
Thank you for an optimal description. I now have a Flow Diagram. 1st diagnosis: No pressure indicated and no water flow through Group Head. REPLACED SOLENOID VALVE ASSEMBLY. No change. Still no pressure or water flow trough Group Head. Stay tuned.
Either the water is going some place, like to the diffuser and drip tray, or there's a blockage in one of the small tubes, or the pump is not putting out enough flow/pressure. Open up the back of the machine and peek inside, carefully as there's exposed electrical connections inside, and see if you can see where the water is going: ruclips.net/video/46UBebNJ-uo/видео.html See if the hot water/steam feature is working.
This is my problem. No water or pressure, the steam wand and hot water work. I changed pump and solenoid valve with no luck. Im thinking it could be the group head itself? Did you get your problem solved?
Thank you for taking the time to explain how the path of water flow goes, now I understand a little more this machine! Sheers☕️ Btw I was able to find a water leak in the 2 way solenoid valve top side, and repair it at home👍🏼👍🏼 the water leak was tripping the GFCI, now is solved. Good Job!
Thank you for the wealth of information!. I was about to give up on my 870XL, but now I'm fairly confident that I can fix my issue. I believe I have a bad three way solenoid but there were also times when it just wouldn't pump water, so I'll probably be replacing the pump soon too.
Yes, good idea to replace both while you are in there. I did the solenoids then later decided the pump needed replacing as well. I'll be rebuilding the pump to have as a spare.
Great video. I've had my machine for 2 years and didn't use it for 1 year, but trying to cut down on the coffee i started using the espresso machine. the pressure was always in the middle then one day it hit max. It was the day i changed coffee, i grinded it myself so i thought maybe i made it too powdery and tried it again. Then it jumped from low to high and noticed something wasn't right... but kept using it since coffee came out. Maybe 7 cups later i notice the drip tray full. I always put a little bowl under the cup so it didn't make sense it was full. Thought the machine blew a seal somewhere and disconnected it. Saw another video of a water leak by the bucket. Today i took the back/top off and noticed the little rubber hose on the bottom and knew it was meant for something and the cause of my water leak. Now with your video my problem may be related to the solenoid that handles the hot water. It may be stuck on 2 hoses and it would explain how a full tank only handled 3 or 4 double espressos and filled my drip tray!! Do you have the model number of the solenoids that you can share? I saw your water pump link. Thanks.
You'll find that information in this video: ruclips.net/video/96IuKiuIB5A/видео.html Likewise another video in this playlist that covers cleaning the solenoid valves that may get them working again.
Yes, gotta have that coffee in the morning. Last company I worked for had commercial espresso machines in most of the break rooms and got hooked on that. When I started my own company, I had to have that same perk :)
Thank you for your very thorough analysis of the water flow. The problem I have is as follows. When the machine is first turned on, it begins to pre-heat and presurise the water. At this point, the port solenoid is turned off. What stops the water flowing directly from the 3 port solenoid to the steam/hot water switch and from there be dumped? This is in fact what is happening in my machine and I cannot figure out how it is supposed to work. Unless the pump is not supposed to come on until you start brewing but I am quite sure I have always been able to hear the pump come on momentarily upon pressing the "on" button. I would appreciate any comments you may have on this matter.
Glad you found the video informative. With both valves off at the beginning, nothing stops water flow up through the top of the 3 port valve to the hot water/steam valve and through that bypass port to the drain pan. On my machine, the pump is run for a few seconds at power up then it's turned off. This is probably done to prime the pump.
@@The4Crawler Thanks for your prompt response. On my machine, the pump keeps running on turn on and, with the 3 port solenoid off, dumps the water straight, via the steam valve into the drip tray. It will do this until it runs out of water. I think this can only be due to a fault in the processor board.
Thanks so much for explaining the water flow truly appreciate it 🙏 I'm still not getting any water coming through to brew coffee for some reason and I've replaced the solenoids and water pump. So just seeing if you can help me and let me know if I'm missing something? Thanks heaps🙏
I had no water flow. After I took it all apart I discovered a comment somewhere to just syringe water through the back inlet. This gets rid of the air inside and forces water into the boiler system etc. 100% worked!!!. Try it before you start taking your machine apart..
Thanks so much for the very nice explanation of the internal structure. This serves me as a very good straight to the truth buying guide for me. I am looking for something like this for the Breville Bambino espresso machine. So far no luck.
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm having an issue with my steam wand on my bes870 Breville. Nothing comes out of the steam wand when I switch it over, the lights engage on the machine, but when I switch it over to hot water all the steam and then eventually hot water comes out of there. So the pressure is building properly but not releasing anywhere when switched to the steam wand. I was thinking maybe a dodgy valve that isn't opening properly or something? I have cleaned the wand and tip, and descaled a couple times. There's not even a drip of water coming out with the tip off the wand.
Great video. Thanks for the very useful info. I’ve had a very similar problem. Australian version BES860. Replaced the 3 way solenoid and dump valve on the valve block and descaled again. Still sending water to the group head and steamer at the same time when steam switched on. Trying to pour a shot results in no pressure on the gauge. Think I’ll watch your pump/over pressure valve video for some more help with my problem. Might be time to buy more parts although this time with more understanding of how it all works. Cheers 🍻
It sounds like the 3-port valve is not fully opening, which seals off the port to the steamer, and that's letting water go in both directions. That valve is the key piece in the puzzle as the steamer/hot water side has no restriction and water will take the path of least resistance.
Thanks again for all your detailed videos. As a follow up for anyone following, I dug deeper into my problem. I initially suspected pressure gauge but thought I better rule out water pump first. It seemed to be fine and would pump out heaps of steam but would struggle to do a shot of coffee or move the gauge. Flow meter filter back flushed and flowing fine. Tested the pump and over pressure and found no water coming from over pressure dump line. And the pump would shoot water a few meters disconnected at the output. Replaced it anyway and all my troubles disappeared. Pressure gauge would jump up to normal range pouring a shot and no more leaks between steamer and group head when steaming milk. Thanks again for giving me that inspiration and motivation to get to the bottom of the issue. Now enjoying my home made barista quality coffee during Melbourne lockdown which has certainly made the lockdown a little easier. Cheers 🍻
thank you so much for sharing, I already disasembled coffee machine (bes 875), but so far couldn't figure out which part has a fault. water is not coming from group head/ portafilter steam and hot water on the side - no problem. clean me option is working. descaling process works 50/50. but 1 / 2 cup coffee - water just won't flow and it ends all in drip tray the water tubes look very clean. some say that airlock could be a problem, not sure if these coffee machines have such issue at all. I'll try to see that valve you mentioned and clean it with vinegar, maybe it helps hopefully I can drink coffee again :)))
"Follow the water". 2 options: 1. Going out the over pressure valve to the drip tray (valve clogged, leaking or set improperly). 2. 3-port valve is not opening fully and that lets water flow, as discussed in this video, to the drip tray: ruclips.net/video/96IuKiuIB5A/видео.html
Hi thanks for the video, it has been a great help. Mine is doing that valve nose you have mentioned, so I have taken the solenoids off, now I am wondering do I need to replace both solenoids or will I get away with changing the right hand one only. Could you advice?
If you purchased the separate solenoids, then you may be able to change just that one, as it's the one that controls brewing. The one on the left, as long as it seals up good and doesn't leak water to the drip tray is only used in the purge cycle at the end of brewing.
thank you for excellent comprehensive information., i have watched lots of videos and read your entire first comprehensive list of trouble shooting possibilities, however I still have a question.,, my machine has a a similar problem, but doesn't make as much noise as usual after powering up. it is rather a quiet buzz. i was wondering if you knew how to tell if it is the pump or the solenoid when there is no pressure. there is no only a small amount of water exiting the wand, steam of either of the shots. I am guessing the solenoid, as I heard that no amount of water at all will come our if the pump is bad., but is that completely true., is there a : partial failure of the pump where some water could still come out ?, thanks for all answers., of course I could just replace both the solenoid and pump, but i am curious which it is. nothing is clogged, cant find any leaks., i have done resets. cleanings etc.. thanks again,
Leaking solenoids will usually send a lot of water down to the drip tray. It may also be a leaking over pressure valve, that sits on top of the pump that's sending water to the tray. On the pump, it may have low output, or the little inlet water filter may be clogged up and preventing water getting to the pump. Often, you can peek inside the back cover with a flashlight and watch where the water is flowing though the tubing.
Thank you very much for explaining in detail. The water is not stopping at 1 cup or 2 cup mark I have to press the button again. Tried factory resetting but still the same. Also tried to program the quantity of water to 1 oz for 1 cup and 2 oz for 2 cup but still the same. Hoping you might have any insight on this.
Check: 01:16 Water flow meter Might try unplugging and reconnecting the plug at the flow meter and also back where it plugs into the main controller board. It might be the vane in the meter is stuck, descaling might help or take it out and see if you can free it up. Gently blow through it, or use a small syringe to push some water through forward and back and see if it's start spinning. If that fails, replace the part: p/n: SP0001473
As I mentioned before, I have installed a new pump and the new solenoid valves kit . The machine worked perfectly for couple of weeks and then one morning the water stopped flowing without any warning. Total dryness, not a drop anywhere. Is it possible the new pump was faulty? Is there any noise for the faulty pump at all? I am lost.
Check the pinned comment in this video for some troubleshooting tips. Is water getting to the drip tray? If pump is making a buzzing type sound, it's probably electrically intact, if not either it may be burned out or the driver circuit on the main control board has failed. Water may not be getting to the bottom of the pump, e.g. clogged inlet filter or a leak in the tube letting air into the line and breaking the vacuum that pulls water up into the pump. Perhaps the water is running out the over pressure valve or one of the outlet tubes is clogged internally. Take one off at a time and try blowing air through it.
My problem I’m having is i wasn’t getting anything through the group head, and all the water ends up in the drip tray. I took it apart and found I had a bad coil on one of the solenoids. I replaced it and it worked for a couple months, and now it’s the same problem, but the coil I replaced last time works fine. I tested by moving it to the other solenoid to see if the issue follows. I also took apart the solenoid and checked it, and it functions fine. Where do I go from here?
Look at the pinned comment in this video, it'll have some troubleshooting tips. Likely the control circuit for that solenoid is not working. The solenoid needs to turn on to open the valve and send water to the drip head.
@RBrown Any suggestions for a machine that keeps dumping the water to the tray from steam wand / hot water valve? It goes straight out the top of the three-way solenoid no matter the shot size. steam wand and hot water work great. No clogs, all connections are correct. The PCB was fully replaced as well as the whole solenoid assembly. Feel like I hit a wall and may have to scrap the whole machine.
That valve is either not turning on or it's turning on but not fully closing off the top port. Water will take the path of least resistance and that's it, up the top into the hot water valve and down into the diffuser and drip tray. See if you can check out the operation of the valve: ruclips.net/video/yYJRQu3ZUik/видео.html Either power it up if you have the equipment to safely do so or use a small super magnet to pull the valve up and see if you can blow into the side port and feel where the air is coming out.
Great walk through of machine! I’m having an issue when trying to make an espresso the water is not coming through group head but going directly into tray….. I’m not mechanically minded so cannot troubleshoot. Any ideas to help me out here? Thanks so much
Check out the pinned comment for this video, there's a troubleshooting guide that'll likely answer your question. 2 things between the pump and the group head / drip tray; that being the over pressure valve or the 3 port solenoid valve. Likely the valve is not turning on fully and that'll send water directly to the drip tray. Videos in this playlist for checking and replacing both those items.
Thank you for such detailed explanation. I have replaced the 3 way and 2 way valve and cleaned all hoses out; still the steam wand and hot water will not work. Any suggestions?
Check the pinned comment for this video. It has some detailed troubleshooting tips. For hot water/steam, the 3-port solenoid must be off and the port to the side sealed. Two options are that it may be getting turned on when it shouldn't, easy test is to unplug the wires to that valve. Only do so with the machine unplugged and be sure to insulate the exposed connections before plugging the machine back in to test it. If that makes the hot water/steam work, find out why that solenoid valve is being turned on. If it doesn't help, then the valve may be sticking internally and not sealing off the other port. In that case, you'll see water running to the drip tray all the time. Open up that valve and clean it internally, I have a video on that process in this playlist. If the pump isn't running in hot water or steam setting, check that the two small switches on the hot water / steam valve are connected and working right. Also, that valve could be partially clogged, run a few descaling cycles through that valve, if possible.
Thank you for your videos. My BES870XL stopped making expresso a while ago. There is no water coming out from the group head when pressing the expresso/coffee button. Steam and hot water work just fine. I followed the steps from your other video to put in a new solenoid. The first thing I noticed is every time I plug the machine into the outlet, there is an audible clicking sound from the solenoid. I didn't recall hearing something similar in the past. The second thing I noticed is hot water will drip for a good 10-20 seconds from the group head every time the machine completes its initiation cycle after the power is turned on. With the new solenoid, I now have water coming out form the group head after pressing the expresso/coffee button. However, when turning on steam or hot water, the steam and hot water come out from the group head instead of the steam wand or hot water outlet. I put the old solenoid back to test if there's any blockage in the delivery of steam and hot water but they both function correctly. I am wondering if I received a defective solenoid but I don't know how to verify.
It does sound like the new solenoids are bad. The hot water/steam feature should work with no power applied to the solenoids, because that path just uses the flow through the normally open port of the 3 port valve. You could try blowing through the valves (of course removed from the machine and no power applied). Should be able to blow through the side of the 3 port valve with air coming out of the top port and also not be able to blow air through the 2 port valve. The clicking may be due to one of both the solenoid coils either being wired wrong or perhaps they are shorted internally. If you have access to an ohm meter, check the coil resistance (between the two vertical tabs) and there should be no connection to the horizontal ground tab. On the 120V system it should be just under 700 ohms. Any reading either close to 0 or much higher would point to a bad coil. Also check the voltage ratings of the new coils, both Olab and Ceme make coils in many voltage ratings, 24V, 120V, 240V and likely more. They all look the same. A 240V coil on a 120V machine might not have enough magnetic field to pull the valve open and that would make a buzzing of clicking type noise. One other troubleshooting step you might try is swapping the coils between the old and new solenoids.
@@The4Crawler Thank you for the quick reply. I removed the solenoid and followed your suggestions. There is definitely air coming out from the top port when blowing through the base of the 3-port valve, which sounds like shouldn't be the case. I cannot blow air through the 2-port valve. So this part is working properly. As for the coil resistance, it is measured at 507ohms and the voltage is rated at 120V. At this point, I more than likely will order a new solenoid just to test it out. Thanks so much for the help!
I got my ports mixed up on the 3 way valve, the side and top ports should pass air with the valve off. Under power, it should close the top port and open the center port. But how that valve operates with 10 bar of hot water pressure may a different story. The resistance you measure may be correct for the Ceme solenoid coils if that's what you have. They pass a bit more current than the Olab solenoids and thus likely have a lower resistance and what you measured sounds about right.
Thank you Mr. Brown, that was helpful, in the picture that I am attaching, if there is an option for this, after i replaced the black part of the solenoid only, (top of the right one, ) and the pump, i did hear a something go flying ( fling) as i was dismantling the unit, although I could not find anything., then upon putting the new pump in an starting to reapply all of the hoses and wired, i found this small spring with a piece of plastic at one end about half an inch in length, hard spring about 1/8th in diameter with a small opaque plastic insterted into one end, which is rounded off), ( UPDATE, I COULDNT POST A PICTURE HERE, SO, I WILL TRY TO DESCRIBE IT, . , ugghh, I don't remember where this came from, or where it goes, can you help me ?, thank you, john
@@The4Crawler , This is exactly the spring, next to the numbers 23 and 24 on the left picture near the bottom of the group of pics, You are INCREDIBLE in your detail.!, I cannot believe the knowledge of the multitude of different videos you have., Thank you for your expertise, God Bless., thanks again, john.
Thank you for your videos how BES870XL works and repair. I replaced the valves and the pump and it worked perfectely for about 2 weeks. Then water stop flowing from any outlets group head, steamer or hot water. When I turn it on, it makes more or less normal noise, just quieter. Water is not even dripping. Any thoughts? Thank you
Check out the pinned comment for this video for some troubleshooting tips. If the pump is running, it could be water is going to the drip tray via some path (e.g. stuck solenoid valve, over pressure valve) or the pump is worn out or there's an air leak in the pump inlet hose and not producing enough flow/pressure to operate or there's a clog in something like the thermo-coil.
My biggest issue and I cannot find a video of this anywhere, is that the water goes into the group head just fine and pulls shots fine. Pressure is perfect, etc. but no water is going to the steam wand or hot water nozzle. All of the small water lines and o rings are cleared (fixed a group head issue I was having) but no thumping sound, no wooshing sound upon turning back to standby, and no water leaving either the steam wand or hot water. I cannot figure out what is causing it for the life of me.
Never ran into that issue myself. A guess is that the small switches on the hot water / steam valve aren't working or disconnected: ruclips.net/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/видео.html Those are what tells the machine that you want hot water or steam. Otherwise, it just sits there.
Thank you for such a great contribution and for sharing such valuable information. I am having problems with 2 little things #1. I did the descale but the light is still on and I did the process 3 times thinking that the machine continued with the light on #2 the amount of water that comes out in hot water remains active for exactly 1 minute vacantly 1 3/4 rate
On the earlier machines, there's only the "Clean Me" light and it only goes off after a cleaning cycle (not a descaling cycle). I generally run a cleaning cycle after I finish the descaling, allowing the machine to cool down first: ruclips.net/video/TZjJFSAkNQ0/видео.html I don't use the hot water feature on my machine but as I recall, you need to manually turn the dial back to Standby to turn off the flow of hot water.
I've got a barista 870. I've replaced the solenoid unit. Still not getting water out of the group head. I've checked the water flow from the pump seems OK as is coming out of the thermocoil. The steam and hot water work. Is this an electrical problem with the two way solenoid not getting power ? I've got a multimeter but am unsure about testing it. Any ideas anyone ?
I replaced the 3-way solenoid valve (the black one on the right in the video) a few weeks ago as it was tripping when I pressed the 1 or 2 cup button up front. It was okay for a while but now I have very little water coming from the group head (it doesn't make the normal sounds anymore) and hot water outlet / steam wand. Of course, there is no pressure on the meter as well. How do I fix this?
See the pinned comment for this video, lots of good troubleshooting information there. In short, figure out where the water is going, assuming the pump is running, likely to the drip tray. If the pump isn't running or not producing enough flow/pressure, see why. Is water getting to the pump,. is it going out the overpressure valve and to the drip tray? If it's going to the hot water side OK, then it's likely that solenoid that is either plugged and not opening fully (water will flow to the hot water valve as that's the path of least resistance). Or perhaps the solenoid isn't being turned on by the main circuit board; bad connection or faulty driver circuit.
@@The4Crawler Ok thanks. I believe the pump is turning on but sound suddenly changes midway (gets softer) even on power on. I'll check the pipes for leaks or clogs. At this point, I am assuming that there is some issue with water flow.
Great video! Have a question though if you have a minute... I have a machine that is not achieving the correct pressure. I've been testing the pressure by using the rubber disk and running a backflow cleaning cycle used with the tablets. Ive swapped out the solenoid assembly and the pump however it made no difference. I've noticed though during the cycle when the pressure is supposed to be held, the water is coming through the end of the solenoid assembly and into the diffuser into the deep tray. I was thinking the solenoid on the left was the issue as it would not be closing causing the water to flow though. Kinda stumped at this point, any ideas I could try? Thanks!!
Peek inside and see if you can isolate which tube the water is flowing to the diffuser in. Be careful as there are live electrical connections inside, but you should be able to peek in the back with a flashlight while running a shot. Either the 3-port solenoid isn't turning on fully and closing off the top port or the 2-port solenoid is sticking open or is getting power all the time. Easy check for that is to unplug a wire from the coil, wrap it in tape for insulation, then run a shot. If that works OK, it may be the main circuit board is sending power to that valve all the time. Another check would be to feel the black coil and see if it gets hot after the machine is on, but not running any cycle, for some time.
@@The4Crawler im thinking it has something to do with the 2-port solenoid because when the machine is trying to hold pressure, I notice a steady stream into the drip tray. That's probably why I'm losing pressure, the water flowing from the end of the solenoid assembly into the diffuser/drip tray. I might try to check the voltages going to the solenoids and when they're being sent. I'm gonna keep troubleshooting this though, thanks for your help!
Hi thank you so much for the video. I wonder where can I buy a replacement for the plastic adapter tube that connects on top of the valve. I am having problems finding it. Thanks in advance!!!1
I descaled my 870XL because the solenoid was buzzing, and it did help but didn’t fully get rid of the buzzing even after two more attempts. So I took the machine apart to get the the 3-way solenoid and took it apart to clean like in your video, but once I put everything together there’s no steam or hot water function. What’s even more odd is there’s no discharge of over pressure, for any action I do. Brewing works and when I switch it to steam or hot water, after hitting brew all the hot water/steam exits the group head. Any ideas what it may be? I’m pretty sure I’ve cleared the solenoid and have tested resistance on both which looked solid.
Hot water / steam flow comes out of the top of the 3-port valve and that's the "off" position. If that's not working, then perhaps the solenoid plunger is stuck or something is blocking the tiny port inside or one of the the Teflon tubes is plugged internally or connected to the wrong place. You should be able to blow air through the side of the 3-port valve with the top port open and feel the air escaping that way.
Hi @The4Crawler , Any tips for replacing the pressure gauge without having to remove the entire panel of switches? I'm hoping to open the machine and be able to access the nuts from the back in order to to pop the gauge out of the front, do you think this is possible? I haven't had time to open it up myself yet. Hoping to get some guidance so I can order the part and do it all in one day instead of taking the machine apart twice. Thanks in advance!
I've never accessed the gauge on my machine. Common problem is a clogged line feeding the back of the gauge, check that first. Looks like a few videos on the subject, search for: "breville bes870 pressure gauge replacement"
I have a Breville espresso machine it seems I overfilled the one shot when making the cappuccino the machine smoked smoke came out of through the side. I have no pressure and no water is coming out through the cappuccino maker. I do have speed and I do have hot water for tea. any kind of suggestion would you?
See the pinned comment in this video for troubleshooting ideas. But yes, the 3-port solenoid valve is what controls flow to the group head. It needs to turn on and open to send hot water there. When it's off/closed, hot water/steam will still work. Likely the black plastic coil is what burned out (look for signs of burning on it), or perhaps the drive circuit on the main circuit board has burned out.
Mr. Brown. Clearly the world has been waiting for your videos! My Breville has working steam, poor (and steamy) hot water output and low flow through the main coffee-making head. I'm suspecting a stuck/clogged solenoid valve. Would this make sense to you?
Could be a number of things. One option it to crack the back of the case open and peek inside while running various functions. See if you can observe where the water is flowing. It might be one of the solenoid valves is sticking partway open and not sealing off the un-used port, a cleaning may help ruclips.net/video/eljHS_BRJXk/видео.html Or it could be the over pressure valve is set too low or leaking and diverting water to the drip tray. Or if no obvious leaks are found, the pump pressure may be too low.
@@The4Crawler Thank you for taking the time to reply. Turned out to be the in-line filter which was clogged. Without this video I was a bit intimidated by the maze of pipes!
Need Help. Have unique situation. When machine broke down only steam/hot water was working. Replaced solenoid valve assembly: espresso part is working, hot water and steam is going thru espresso port. Changes three way valve with part from Brevville(OEM) and same: espresso is working, when I turn hot water or steam, it’s going thru espresso part. What could be wrong?
Follow the water, if it's going to espresso all the time, the 3-port solenoid is either stuck open or it's being turned on all the time. One test is to unplug the machine, open the back and remove one of the top 2 wires from the solenoid, tape off the exposed end, then plug the machine in for a test. If it only does hot water/steam, then the solenoid is getting power all the time, check the main circuit board, perhaps the driver for that solenoid is stuck on. If if still does only espresso, the solenoid valve is stuck open internally. Open it up and see what's up, I have a video on testing the solenoid valve in this playlist.
@ I unplugged one wire from solenoid and run test. Water/steam worked and espresso didn’t. Connected that wire back and espresso works but hot water/steam goes thru espresso port . I believe I need to check or replace circuit board? What to check in the circuit board?
@@mortgagesdmv9205 See photo 11 in the album below: photos.app.goo.gl/bN1ugnLPYwvyDcr59 Likely either TA-3 or TA-4 have failed in a shorted condition, i.e. they are always on.
I just got a new breville barista express and only used it for 1 week, stopped using it for 1 week and when I turned it back on it did not make the loud noise it usually makes when turning on a breville, and no water flowing through anywhere, not through the group head or the steam wand or the hot water, it makes no noise whatsoever. Any idea where the problem could be coming from? Thank you
The loud noise is usually the pump running for a bit when the machine is first turned on. The pump is also what pumps the water through the various outlets. So either the pump isn't working, un-plugged or an open thermal cutout: ruclips.net/video/i8GGZHKNxPo/видео.htmlsi=zENHMjyIfZnRd0Ar or the circuitry on the main circuit board has failed. If it's a newer machine, it may be in warrantee, so best to contact Breville support and see if they can assist.
@@The4Crawler unfortunately Breville cannot help me without a receipt. I’m surprised there is no water flow if ive only used it for about 1 week. I did leave it plugged in for the 1 week I did not use it, maybe that was a problem? I’ll try replacing the pump and hope that will solve my issue.
It's likely buried in the solenoid coil of the pump. Easy enough to test, just use an ohm meter across the two coil wires, one way should measure a different resistance depending on the polarity of the probes, higher in one direction, lower in the other.
@@The4Crawler thanks, i do know how to test it, it's just locating it. No pressure when making coffee. there are 3 connections on the pump one indicates a diode but cannot locate it. The yellow wire connected to that connection goes to a thermal switch (Klixon) - not a diode. SO the diode is buried somewhere.
@@JohnPilling25As far as I have read, the diode is buried in the coil someplace. Here's a thread on adding a diode externally: www.home-barista.com/repairs/ulka-vibe-pump-repair-fix-t58788-10.html
Thank you for the explanation. If you could help me with my problem it would be greatly appreciated. What I have is I can express one cup properly then 2nd and 3rd mostly foam and then the 4th shoot will have no more water. When running descaling the water runs perfectly. I am not understanding where there might be a blockage
Never ran across that issue. Best to identify if it's a problem of too high a temperature (i.e. more like steam) or too low a flow or pressure that's causing the issue. Follow the water, see if you get more water in the drip tray on cups 2, 3 or 4 vs. cup 1. Could be the over pressure valve is opting and sending water to the drip tray. Or the 3-port solenoid valve (coil) getting hot and not fully opening after the 1st shot, i.e it's passing water out the top port which goes to the drip tray.
So 6 single shots were all good 44g from the head and about 20g of blow off into the tray then my 7th shot only about 10g out the head and 60g into the tray. What do you think I can do about this overheating issue?
@@ramienb Sounds more like a pressure issue. Perhaps the over pressure valve is leaking or set too low. ruclips.net/video/46UBebNJ-uo/видео.html That valve will send water to the drip tray if the pressure exceeds it's setting. You might try screwing in the adjuster knob a bit at a time and see if anything changes. Otherwise, it might be the 3-port solenoid is getting hot (feel the black plastic coil) and not pulling that valve fully open and that'll let water flow out the top port and to the drip tray. They key is to peek inside the back of the machine while running a test and see if you can identify where the water is going.
Hi, My Breville has just started making a high pitch squeal when I turn off the wand. If I switch directly to the hot water, then the noise stops and instead of hot water coming out, I get a loads of steam for a while that then switches to hot water after 10 seconds or so. Any ideas on what might be causing that? Thanks in advance.
Never ran into that issue myself. Might try running a few descaling cycles, switching back and forth between steam and hot water. Also, check the 2 switches on the hot water/steam valve and make sure they are not sticking closed when you move the knob on the valve back and forth. Those are what tells the machine processor which mode you're in.
Hi great video, i followed and replaced both soleinoid. Water now coming out of brewhead but now my steamer is coming out of there too, any ideas on how to fix this?
Check out the pinned comment in this video for detailed troubleshooting ideas. To get water out of both the group head and steamer at the same time, it's likely that the 3-port solenoid valve is perhaps stuck partway open. It needs to open or close fully to seal off the other passage and stop water from flowing to the steamer while brewing or vice versa. Maybe there's some debris or hard water deposits in there. Try running a few descaling cycles back to back and see if that clears it up. Switch back and forth between hot water and coffee while descaling.
Hello, many thanks for your very informative video. I have a low pressure problem in my Sage Barista Express. The pressure briefly goes up to the bottom end of the "espresso range" but then immediately drops down into the 'pre infusion' range until the water stops. It makes a full double espresso. It does the same thing on a single espresso. I have tried replacing the solenoid valve block and also cleaned out the little in line filer that sits between the water tank and the flow meter. I've also ran a few descale cycles etc. It used to work just fine. What would you suggest I try next? Many thanks!
Might be the over pressure valve is popping open and limiting the pressure, some details on how that works below: photos.app.goo.gl/bN1ugnLPYwvyDcr59 Or, if the extraction time is decent and the espresso is OK, maybe the gauge is just not reporting accurately. The line to it may have a clog in it or something.
@@The4Crawler Thanks so much for these videos, they've been so helpful in understanding how the Barista Express works. I've been trying to diagnose the issue with my secondhand machine. Interestingly, it started after I ran a cleaning cycle. I'm having the same issue as this comment. The machine is not getting up to pressure while attempting to run a brewing cycle, but is still sending out the correct amount of water through the grouphead. It runs through the grouphead very quickly. I've tried adjusting the over pressure valve, but that hasn't corrected the issue. Also, only a minimal amount of water goes to the driptray. Since water seems to be flowing the correct direction, am I correct that the OPV and the solenoid are likely not the issue? I think that I've troubleshot this to the point of confirming that the pump is not producing enough pressure, but wanted a second opinion before purchasing one. Thank you!
@@natekling6792 Hard to say. If the flow is OK but the pressure low with coffee in the porta filter, then there may not be enough restriction in the coffee to produce the pressure drop. If this is the case, try running with the double wall filter basket and see if there's a change. If the extracted coffee is decent, it might be as simple as the gauge not reading right, perhaps the tube to it is clogged. If that flow is OK with nothing in the portafilter, then it may be the pump output pressure is too low. That's what I saw in my machine after replacing the solenoids.
@@The4Crawler Thanks so much! The pressure has not increased when I've tried the double wall basket, as well as when I've done trial runs with the cleaning disk. It seems the gauge is reading correctly. I'll go ahead and order a new pump! Thanks so much for offering your insight and knowledge. The world is better off thanks to people like you 🙌
Here is a question. I am seeing dripping when I pull out the bottom tray. This dripping is coming from the inner front wall. It starts after I hit one of the shot buttons. I also see a few drips come out of the grinder port...not the shot port....that was wierd. I bought this Barista pro second hand so now I am getting aquainted with the machine trying to make a good shot and all of the lights and buttons seem to function and start up but I did notice a low pressure. I saw steam come out of the grinder dial and some out of the back of the machine... Do you think there is an internal leak? Nothing should leak internally, correct??? thanks for your advice.
Yes, sounds like an internal leak. You can open the back of the machine and look for signs of leaks like I did in this video: ruclips.net/video/46UBebNJ-uo/видео.html Be careful as there are live electrical connections exposed inside.
@@The4Crawler Thanks for the advice. I followed along the tutorials and replaced the solenoid assembly. I think it could have gotten away with just the Oring in the elbow valve seal but now its all running and no more leaking. Now I see the backwash pipe above the water tray from the front dumps some water everytime I turn on the machine. Do you think that is normal? I want to make sure my machine is back to normal before I put it back together again. Turning it on testing the machine for leaks I noticed the tray will get enough water that I had to dump it... I hope maybe on startup there is a process to do a backflush...so if I were not turning it on and off it wouldnt fill up...can someone on here check to see if there is a purging of water moment during startup into the water tray? I would appreciate it! thanks for your advice!
@@xpez9694 It is normal for the pump to run for a few seconds when the machine is first turned on. And at that time, the solenoids are all closed and that send water up to the hot water valve and down it's drain tube to the drip tray.

For anyone who finds this video: ISSUE: Steam and/or water coming from head when selected to hot water or steam. PROBLEM: 3-Way solenoid was caked with mineral deposits. FIX: remove solenoid clip from bottom of 3 way valve with side cutter, remove hoses connected to solenoid, remove wires to solenoid. Make sure that solenoid plunger moves freely in body. Reassemble is reverse of removal.
Good point. Yes, that 3-way valve is the key part of the system and can cause either the issue I was having or as you describe. I have a video on cleaning that valve here: ruclips.net/video/eljHS_BRJXk/видео.html
@@The4Crawler I did see that video, of course after the comment :P There was a hardware revision at some point, making the 2/3 way valve a lot more disassemble-able. It was a single piece valve slider.
@@tylermiller214 This video should answer that question. The 3-port valve is what diverts water to the group head when it's on, and when off sends it to the hot water / steam valve.
I have water overflowing from the Flow meter regardless if it’s plugged in or not. Was does that mean? I took it apart but I have no clue what the issue is and how to repair it. The Flow meter is about 20$ CAN so I don’t want to replace it if I can fix it easily. Any suggestions?
I've never run into that issue before. Since the water level in the tank is higher than the flow meter, it'll always have that slight pressure inside. So it could be that the flow meter housing is cracked or perhaps one of the tubes connecting to it is leaking.
You'll need to remove the clip and likely the small o-ring, if it's out of position, to get the hose back in place. I show how to do that in this video: ruclips.net/video/yPZCZxlEU6Q/видео.html
My barista grinder stops grinder after grinding small amount & needs to keep my hand on button to continue grinding , what would be the cause of this please
This was really helpful thank you! I've got a leak coming out of the elbow join closest to the hopper side and can't work out why. I changed the o ring which helped a bit, but im still not getting hot water or steam and can still see hot water dripping out. before I changed the o ring turning the switch to either hot water or steam wasn't doing anything and now it's making noises again so its definitely helped, but not fixed! Any ideas?
Glad it helped! Could be that elbow has a small crack in it. Take a close look at it and maybe it can be repaired using epoxy. To lose hot water and/or steam, you would need to be losing all the water out of that fitting. The hot water is at a fairly low pressure. Perhaps the line to that valve or the valve itself is clogged.

If you have any tips to add or topics not covered, reply to this comment.
SAFETY NOTES:
- Be careful inside the machine, there are exposed live electrical connections inside
- Unplug the machine before working inside
- You may need to peek inside with a flashlight while running the machine to observe where water is flowing or to check for leaks
- Playlist with all videos: ruclips.net/p/PLpY2FP1a9tisyIfKjSugexoVK01xQuptv
- Photo album with more details: photos.app.goo.gl/bN1ugnLPYwvyDcr59
The basic idea for troubleshooting problems with the machine is to "follow the water". Start at the tank, then follow it's flow path and where it either stops or goes the "wrong" way is where the problem lies. See below for details:
WATER FLOW:
Follow the water, find out how it's going to the wrong place, then figure out why:
- Starts in the tank
- Flows through a small in-line water filter
That can get clogged, clean or replace
- Through the flow meter
If that fails you're machine won't stop at the 1-cup or 2-cup setting
- Into the bottom of the pump
That line can have air leaks and that can prevent the pump suction from pulling in water
- Out the top of the pump
The pump can be worn and not be able to prime, move water or produce enough pressure
Ulka pump rebuild kits are available as are new pumps
- Through the over pressure/safety valve (plastic part with a knob and hose off the side)
That can be set for too low a pressure or if can have debris inside that causes a leak to the drip tray
- Through a tube to the thermo-coil then out of thermo-coil down to the side of the 3-port solenoid valve
Either tube can be connected wrong or plugged inside or an o-ring is damaged or missing
The thermo-coil could be clogged internally, try blowing air through forward and backwards to check
- For a brew cycle, the 3-port solenoid valve must open fully
This will seal off the top port, that otherwise send water to the hot water/steam valve
This also opens the side port to send water up to the group head
If this valve is clogged and doesn't fully open, water will take the path of least resistance
- The 2-port solenoid valve needs to be closed to seal off it's side port which send water to the drip tray
That valve may be getting power all the time and/or it may be clogged inside, preventing it from sealing
Easy test is to disconnect the wires to the solenoid and test
If it still leaks, open up the valve and clean it in descaling liquid
It opens at the end of a cycle for ~30 secs. to purge hot water out of the machine
- For a hot water or steam cycle, the 3-port solenoid valve must be closed fully
If water comes out the group head in hot water or steam mode, the 3-port solenoid may not be fully closed
It could have deposits inside preventing it from sealing off the side port
Open up the valve and clean it in descaling liquid
It may be getting power all the time and sending water to the group head
Easy test is to disconnect the wires to the solenoid and test
- No flow or pressure too low:
If you don't hear the pump run at power on or while running the machine, pump may not be running
Wires may not be connected properly
Thermal overload (Klixon) may have popped
Driver (Triac) on the main PCB may not be sending power to the pump, check voltage
If you hear the pump running but no flow of water or too little pressure:
Pump internals may be worn, rebuild or replace the pump
Over pressure valve may be leaking or set to low, sending water to the drip tray
Water may not be getting to the pump, clogged inlet filter or flow meter or air leak in tubing
Check all the lines for clogs or leaks.
ELECTRICAL:
- Machine trips GFCI/RCD breaker
A solenoid coil (black plastic cube on top of the valve) is a likely cause
It may have had water dripping on it, leaving conductive deposits
This can create a short from a live connection to one of the metal parts
It may have overheated and cracked leading to a connection to metal parts
If this is the case, replace the black plastic solenoid coil (see below)
- Solenoid doesn't turn on
Wiring hooked up incorrectly, e.g. maybe the solenoid wires have been swapped
Solenoid coil may be burned out internally, a resistance/continuity check would tell if this is the case
- Try swapping the coil with the other solenoid valve and see if starts working, if so, replace the coil
- These coils seem to be similar, if you can find a similar brand valve with the same voltage
Main circuit board (PCB) may be damaged and not sending enough current to turn on the solenoid
- Voltage check at the coil; voltage significantly less than your normal line voltage, this may be the issue
- Solenoid runs all the time
Coil will feel warm/hot to the touch after the machine has been plugged in but not used for a while
This will cause the water to only flow to the group head, even in hot water or steam setting
Likely cause is the driver (Triac) on the main PCB has failed in the on state, powering the coil all the time
- Easy check: Disconnect the wires to that solenoid coil and see if it stays in the off position

Hi @the4crawler thanks for this information it's really helpful 🌞
But I'm still having issues in getting water through my group head.
I have replaced the solenoids, the water pump, the triac, given it a good descale and also pulled the group head out to make sure its not blocked but when I turn it on the water still just goes to the tray when I push the 1 or 2 coffee cup.
The steam and hot water works fine.
It seems like there is no power going to the solenoids for some reason🤷♂️
Would you have any idea what Am I missing?
Cheers for your help
@@troyvidovich375 For an espresso shot to work, the 3 port solenoid needs the coil powered on to seal off the top port and to send water to the group head. 2 options are that water is going out the over pressure valve to the drip tray or it's going out via the hot water/steam valve which, if off, send water to the drip tray.
If the latter, then that would indicate no power to the solenoid. You could check for voltage there, that's where the indicator LEDs I installed on my machine help. It may be there's an issue with the wires, broken connection some place. Or the repair on the circuit board has an issue:

@The4Crawler Hi mate thanks so much for your reply information I truly appreciate it mate 🙏
There is definitely no power going to the solenoids as I unplugged the wires and tested them with a volt meter also I turned on the 1 and 2 cup and the water went straight to the tray.
So I have now ordered a new power board as you have suggested it maybe the triacs so hopefully this is the answer.👍
Thanks again I will keep you posted👍
I can’t get any water out of the group head for espressos. Hot water spout and steam working fine. I replaced entire solenoid block, no change.Using your brilliant guide, I think I can deduce that it’s the pipe that runs up from between the solenoid valves into the group head. No water comes out of here at all when 1 or 2 cup pressed. All other areas of the flow seem ok. Do you know what could be the cause and any possible fixes/solutions?
May add that the pipe from solenoid to group head itself is not blocked. Also, the water seems to just go straight to the dump valve.
I’ve been looking for information to help me confirm my suspicion of the same issue. Glad we still got some old school engineer out there taking the time to help others. God bless from the UK sir !
Glad to help.
Probably the best video explaining how this machine works - Thank you
Thank you for the explanation.
Replacements are available,
p/n: SP0023159
And no problem using another grinder with the machine.
I found I had to take mine apart for cleaning:

Sounds like a successful repair. Yes, just a matter of following where the water should be going and then figure out why it's not getting there.
That is why i am here, I am sure have the same problem ;)
@The4Crawler I have no flow to the group head, hot water nozzle or steam wand. About to start my repair journey, fingers crossed its only a clogged line. Unit is only ~2.5yrs old
Thanks for taking the time to detail the skematic operating directions, extremely helpful
That is SO clever with the solenoids showing what's happening!
@@The4Crawler Can I ask a question please, what kind of material is made the water tank, manual valve etc. ? Is it aluminum ?
Very useful video for problem solving. For a couple weeks, I have had low shot pressure and weak steam. After viewing your video, I have a much better understanding of how everything works/flows, and I have confirmed that my problem is the safety valve. Whenever I pull a shot or use the steamer, water escapes from the side of the safety valve into the drip tray. Hence the lack of pressure/steam. I'm happy that I finally figured out this problem with your help. Thank you!
Great troubleshooting, glad you found the issue. That valve may have some scale inside causing it to stick open.
Genius, I have just been given a faulty unit and you have just saved me a lot of time! Thank you
Great to hear!
An excellent overview - the explanation of the diffuser was especially helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
You single-handedly helped me repair my machine, thank you so much!!
Great to hear! That was the whole point of the video, as NASA likes to say, "Follow the water".
Thanks for the excellent presentation , it's refreshing to meet engineering minded people.
Glad you liked it and thanks for the kind words.
Great to hear and good find! I imagine a lot of these machines get tossed due to the solenoid valves getting gummed up. Fairly easy to repair.
I have enjoyed my Barista Express for 4 years and thanks to videos like this one, I can maintain it and ensure it always makes the good coffee I enjoy every day. Thank you and keep them coming.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, these machines are fairly easy to maintain and repair.
Great repair, glad the video was a help!
Best video I've ever seen on this. Applicable to oher models as well, they all use similar principles. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Even the audio alone was gold!
You explain better than my exmentors :D Greets from London, from an ex coffee engineer!
Wow, thanks!
Awesome video. I love how clearly you explained the way the system works.
Glad it was helpful!
thanks to your videos i was able to repair my Solis Grind and Infuse Pro 115A , which is the Dutch/European version of this machine.
Good tip, glad you got your machine working again.
You are a stud! Thanks for this and the other videos. Love the indicator light mod.
Great job fixing your machine! Hopefully your post may help someone else.
Excellent explanation, thanks a lot! I couldn't have even started my troubleshooting without your video. Luckily I have the same model...
Glad it helped!
Great video, thank you for taking the time to upload this. Need to dive into my BES870 to investigate a very loud buzzing and no water pressure from brew head or water, so I suspect the 3 way solenoid you describe is my first port of call. Thanks from UK
Thanks for the comment. Yes, it does sound like your 3 way solenoid is the problem:

Awesome video!!! Thanks a lot, now I start to understand what the noises are all about. Love it!😊
Brilliant and informative! Now...I know my machine almost certainly has a faulty 3 way solenoid valve
Glad it helped. Yes, that's the common problem area in these machines.
Thank you!
Just one note: flow meter is not used for clean me feature. I've disabled it and clean me still works
OK, good to know. It must be triggered then on a count of brew cycles or something like that.
How did you disable the flow meter?
@@The4Crawler I've unplugged the 3 cables so that I can extend shot time to 60s regardless of volume
@@marcomartins6071 Great information, I had wondered what affect unplugging that sensor would have on the machine.
Thanks for the very informative video. I have had my breville for 6 years with no issues. My hot water and steam wand is working but no water through the group head just dumping straight to purge drip tray. I presume I have a bad solinoid. A common water leak I found is the elbow connector which I have replaced. Thank you

You are so welcome!
Excellent video, all of yours are very very helpful, much appreciated
Glad you like them!
Greatly happy that I found your video.
It is a gold mine.
Glad to hear that!
Open up the back of the machine and peek inside, carefully as there's exposed electrical connections inside, and see if you can see where the water is going:
ruclips.net/video/46UBebNJ-uo/видео.html
See if the hot water/steam feature is working.
This is my problem. No water or pressure, the steam wand and hot water work. I changed pump and solenoid valve with no luck. Im thinking it could be the group head itself? Did you get your problem solved?
Wow that was a great insight into how the flows work out.
Thanks for sharing.
I have Subscribed 👌🏻
Glad you found the video informative, welcome aboard!
Wow this cleared up so many questions I had, working on 2 of these machines myself. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Good Job!
Glad it was helpful! Water leaking inside is never a good thing.
Thanks.
You'll find that information in this video:
ruclips.net/video/96IuKiuIB5A/видео.html
Likewise another video in this playlist that covers cleaning the solenoid valves that may get them working again.
someone who loves coffee as much as me thanks for showing
Yes, gotta have that coffee in the morning. Last company I worked for had commercial espresso machines in most of the break rooms and got hooked on that. When I started my own company, I had to have that same perk :)
Great video, excellent explanation. Thank you from the land down under.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! I’m surprised no one has made a video like this for delonghi ec9335
You're welcome! Maybe someone with one of those machines will open it up and dig into how it works.
This is an excellent video! Thank you very much for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much for explaining the water flow truly appreciate it 🙏
I'm still not getting any water coming through to brew coffee for some reason and I've replaced the solenoids and water pump.
That's a great tip, thanks for sharing!
Like just remove the tank and then syringe in three that outlet? Or take back cover off and syringe into inlet hose?
Thanks so much for the very nice explanation of the internal structure. This serves me as a very good straight to the truth buying guide for me.
I am looking for something like this for the Breville Bambino espresso machine. So far no luck.
It should be similar, maybe a bit less complicated.
Thank you for sharing valuable content video. It helps me to fix problem of my coffee machine.
Great to hear!
Some tips on low or no steam flow below:
siber-sonic.com/appliance/800Mech.html
Cheers 🍻
This was the video I needed! Ty
thank you so much for sharing, I already disasembled coffee machine (bes 875), but so far couldn't figure out which part has a fault. water is not coming from group head/ portafilter steam and hot water on the side - no problem. clean me option is working. descaling process works 50/50.
but 1 / 2 cup coffee - water just won't flow and it ends all in drip tray
the water tubes look very clean. some say that airlock could be a problem, not sure if these coffee machines have such issue at all. I'll try to see that valve you mentioned and clean it with vinegar, maybe it helps
hopefully I can drink coffee again :)))
"Follow the water". 2 options:
1. Going out the over pressure valve to the drip tray (valve clogged, leaking or set improperly).
2. 3-port valve is not opening fully and that lets water flow, as discussed in this video, to the drip tray:

@@The4Crawler very helpful, we'll see tomorrow how it goes
Check:
01:16 Water flow meter
Might try unplugging and reconnecting the plug at the flow meter and also back where it plugs into the main controller board. It might be the vane in the meter is stuck, descaling might help or take it out and see if you can free it up. Gently blow through it, or use a small syringe to push some water through forward and back and see if it's start spinning. If that fails, replace the part: p/n: SP0001473
@@The4Crawler Thank you very much. Will try that and update.
See if you can check out the operation of the valve:
ruclips.net/video/yYJRQu3ZUik/видео.html
Either power it up if you have the equipment to safely do so or use a small super magnet to pull the valve up and see if you can blow into the side port and feel where the air is coming out.
This rocks! Thanks for your effort!
Hi Alan. Were you able to fix your problem with another solenoid? We have exactly the same problem after replacing the old solenoid.

Very informative!! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
A guess is that the small switches on the hot water / steam valve aren't working or disconnected:
ruclips.net/video/9lMw6ooiqPI/видео.html
Those are what tells the machine that you want hot water or steam.
I generally run a cleaning cycle after I finish the descaling, allowing the machine to cool down first:

I don't use the hot water feature on my machine but as I recall, you need to manually turn the dial back to Standby to turn off the flow of hot water.
I've got a barista 870. I've replaced the solenoid unit. Still not getting water out of the group head. I've checked the water flow from the pump seems OK as is coming out of the thermocoil.
Thanks ... great insight ,I have much better understanding now after going through your video! Gonna be useful when my machine needs some tweaking!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi @The4Crawler ,
Any tips for replacing the pressure gauge without having to remove the entire panel of switches?
I'm hoping to open the machine and be able to access the nuts from the back in order to to pop the gauge out of the front, do you think this is possible?
I haven't had time to open it up myself yet. Hoping to get some guidance so I can order the part and do it all in one day instead of taking the machine apart twice.
Thanks in advance!
I've never accessed the gauge on my machine. Common problem is a clogged line feeding the back of the gauge, check that first.
Looks like a few videos on the subject, search for: "breville bes870 pressure gauge replacement"
@@The4Crawler i’ll give that a shot, thanks!
It might be one of the solenoid valves is sticking partway open and not sealing off the un-used port, a cleaning may help
ruclips.net/video/eljHS_BRJXk/видео.html
Or it could be the over pressure valve is set too low or leaking and diverting water to the drip tray.

So either the pump isn't working, un-plugged or an open thermal cutout:
ruclips.net/video/i8GGZHKNxPo/видео.htmlsi=zENHMjyIfZnRd0Ar
or the circuitry on the main circuit board has failed.
Really appreciated that. Now where is the pump diode so it can be tested. I hope you can help.
Here's a thread on adding a diode externally:

Never thought of that, I’ll take a look and see. Someone once told me it could be a heat related issue so that makes sense.
So 6 single shots were all good 44g from the head and about 20g of blow off into the tray then my 7th shot only about 10g out the head and 60g into the tray. What do you think I can do about this overheating issue?
@@ramienb Sounds more like a pressure issue. Perhaps the over pressure valve is leaking or set too low.
ruclips.net/video/46UBebNJ-uo/видео.html
That valve will send water to the drip tray if the pressure exceeds it's setting.
I’ll give that a try. Thank you!
Thank you for explaining this!
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing video, thank you❤!!

Might be the over pressure valve is popping open and limiting the pressure, some details on how that works below:
photos.app.goo.gl/bN1ugnLPYwvyDcr59
Or, if the extraction time is decent and the espresso is OK, maybe the gauge is just not reporting accurately.

Here is a question. I am seeing dripping when I pull out the bottom tray. This dripping is coming from the inner front wall. It starts after I hit one of the shot buttons. ISSUE: Steam and/or water coming from head when selected to hot water or steam.
PROBLEM: 3-Way solenoid was caked with mineral deposits.
FIX: remove solenoid clip from bottom of 3 way valve with side cutter, remove hoses connected to solenoid, remove wires to solenoid. Remove solenoid valve by percussive means, soak on vinegar or other mineral remover. Clean with soft brushes, and clean waterway to steam/hot water selector. Make sure that solenoid plunger moves freely in body.
Reassemble is reverse of removal.
Good point. Yes, that 3-way valve is the key part of the system and can cause either the issue I was having or as you describe.
I have a video on cleaning that valve here:

@@The4Crawler I did see that video, of course after the comment :P There was a hardware revision at some point, making the 2/3 way valve a lot more disassemble-able. It was a single piece valve slider.
@@The_Hudson_Workshop I've not tried cleaning the newer style Ceme valves.
Which solenoid valve do I need for my 870XL? Just the double or triple? Mine started the nasty buzzing this morning while brewing
Can’t figure out if I need the 2 way or 3way
The 3-port solenoid is the main one, that one needs to turn on to do the espresso mode:

@@tylermiller214 This video should answer that question. The 3-port valve is what diverts water to the group head when it's on, and when off sends it to the hot water / steam valve.
@@The4Crawler thank you man i appreciate your time. I’m getting the noise when I try to brew a shot
I have a problem where the water hose at 5:22 has come out and won't go back in
You'll need to remove the clip and likely the small o-ring, if it's out of position, to get the hose back in place. I show how to do that in this video:

My barista grinder stops grinder after grinding small amount & needs to keep my hand on button to continue grinding , what would be the cause of this please
Maybe the grind amount dial has become disconnected from the main circuit board and/or has failed.
Какой вы молодец 👏 все так Хорошо объясняете 😊
