Competitive Pokemon singles is occasionally a world wherein Novel or seemingly Horrible options are used on Pokemon for an advantage.
The low level attack "Gust" is a standard option on it's Choice Band set in Gen 3 for example.
Are there other such examples? Yes, and I will discuss those.
Thankyou for reading. I wish you well in life and hope you do well after you're done with reading my words here.
How to Shiny Farm Flygon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? Perhaps smart individuals know about that but not me. I wouldn't ask JimCool or Jim Cool about anything of that ilk.

I wish you included the tormentran set in gen 4.
Gliscor is on his hands and knees, crying and demanding why you would cure him of his poison affliction. By following his hippocratic oath, Goldengo M.D. ironically has inflicted even more pain and suffering.
*Extremely loud incorrect buzzer*
Just want to say I love this comment so much and I can’t explain why.
This is insane

Thank you.
That Gholdengo Pecha Berry Trick was one of the funniest things I've seen in competitive Pokemon. I love hyper specific "fuck this Pokemon in particular" sets like that.
If a car's power is measured by horses, and Revavroom is basically a car's engine, while also learning High Horsepower, then Revavroom should be in the horse council too.
Second.
Third
Third Two.
In Gen 9 the pokemon company introduced paradox forms. In the same generation they introduce a technological sibling to the horse genre in revavroom. Though modern research revavroom has been reinterpreted as Iron Equine, truely a masterful work of forshadowing the future paradox mons in having them used as the boss mob of the evil team. As Iron Valient reflects both gaurd and gallade, Iron Equine represents all horses.
Fun fact: 1 Horsepower does not equate to the power/potential of 1 Horse... In reality it's something more like "1 Horse has 15-ish Horsepower" 🤨
Edit: Correction
Pecha Berry trick Gholdengo is the type of hyoer-specific trolling that I love, just like torment skarm into sand attack dugtrio
The guy that made it is a professional gliscor hater lmao

In competitive Pokémon, most popular builds on popular Pokémon will consist of the best options in the entire game
Think of choice specs dragapult with Draco meteor and shadow ball
Or Choice Scarf Landorus (Therian), with Earthquake and U-turn
These are expected item choices, or expected move choices, on popular and powerful Pokemon.
But sometimes, competitive Pokemon gets weird.
But sometimes competitive Pokémon gets weird
That Gholdengo set is 100% peak anime. Enemy hurts themselves to gain an advantage? Why, I'll just *heal them instead*. Fucking genious lol
Genious indeed
19:23 It might've been by mistake but "clownterplay" is such a fitting term for these unusual and funny meta-defying sets.
Gust is actually not used by Pidgey in Route 1, because the small bird can only full-body tackle it's opponents until level 9, which is very sane, and makes sense
It is in Gen 1.
Red/Blue/Yellow Pidgey gets Gust as its default move. This was changed from Gen 2 onwards. Because of this, Jomothy remains gaming.
In Gen 1 they did, but also gust was a Normal type move instead of Flying type
@JtkBasketball Except you can't trade from rby to gsc to rse, so it's not really applicable
@@Guy-McPersonGen 2 Time Capsule says hello
I like Flygon's happy face and Breloom's "wtf is wrong with you" expression in the thumbnail.
Flygon looks so proud of himself. :D
I wonder what Muk will do with the money? Perhaps he will muck around with the big shots for a while. I hope he doesn't tangle with Gholdengo's Ancient Paradox form Old Money -- that one's not known for it's kindness.
Maybe he will invest in Gimmighoul's Future Paradox form Iron Cryptocurrency.
9:42 "no more gen 3 i promise"
I can assure you, none of us would really mind a 20 minute long video of just weird gen 3 sets. Youre known as the gen 3 guy after all. Its what we're here for, its what we subbed for, and its what we expect a bulk of a vid if not all of it to be
no disrespect, sad I have to say that or people will get upset with me saying so. but prefer the current gen analysis
Remember when Jim almost exclusively covered the gen 9 meta? Wild times
i thought we are here for the horses and that muk gets a million dollars
Did you ever ask what HE wants?
I'm here on behalf of Iron mugulus, so whatever gen works for me, especially since I completely skipped gen3 as a kid lol
As I was travelling to the city centre, the train had to stop, due to the OU staple Snorlax sleeping on the tracks.
Hariyama has agreed to use Wake-Up-Slap on the sleeping Snorlax, but to prevent Snorlax from suing Hariyama for battery, Snorlax needs to wake up the the good news of Jimothy Cool’s RUclips channel reaching 100 thousand subscribers. Let’s work together to reach this milestone, and overcome this inconvenience. Thank you.
Jim use this one next time thanks you
Okay that pecha berry just to mess gliscor up is the funniest shit I have ever seen. Great video bro you are doing wonderful
That pecha berry goldengo is hilarious. And I'm absolutely stealing that skarmory set. Also don't ever forget about Z peck mamoswine. I literally don't even remember what it was used for anymore if I'm being honest but it was hype as hell. Thanks for this video honestly hope you do more niche moveset videos in the future. I really like the Pokemon gen breakdowns and the Pokemon individual breakdowns. But the off meta counter starts are one of my fav concepts in Pokemon so I really appreciate this video! Great video!
If I remember right Z peck was used as a way to ohko buzzwhole. Mamoswines also use to run peck in dp out to get Heracross since it didn’t really have a good 4th move if you were using a different stealth rocker
A Lum Berry Trick Gholdengo would do that on Poison Healers, but also self burn Guts abusers, or other potential self-status abusers. Flame Orb + Guts come to mind, if they ever get out of hand.
@@Adjudicator1 both are gimmicky and matchup reliant but tricking a flame orb and getting burnt isn't the ideal situation i suppose?
@@patrickstar8132would gholdengo get burnt? Does the flame orb bypass good as gold?
@@isuckatgaming1873 good as gold only protects from status moves, so yes, Gholdengo would get burned. You may be thinking of Garganacl's ability Purifying Salt which makes you immune to status conditions from any source.
I remember having fun with Psycho Shift on a bulky Sigilyph using Flame Orb in Gen 5. Not the best Pokemon but since it has Magic Guard it's not suffering from the Burn and it can just freely transfer burns to things as well as Whirlwind to shuffle things out for hazard damage.
Also I love that Pecha Berry Trick Gholdengo tech.
The Gholdengo + Pecha Berry (Poison / Toxic cure) berrry + Trick is an ingenious trick (Pun intended). Not only does it removes the Poison Heal, but also the status applying item which can be turned around on another.
If self-status abusers are a serious issue, a Lum Berry + Trick Gholdengo will not only debilitate poison healers, but also possibly Flame Orb Guts users or other similar sets.
The best way to counter poison heal Gliscor is to heal its poison? Well isn’t that ironic
If there's one thing Pokemon XD taught me with Battle CD's it's that Gust hits Fly and Bounce users, Surf hits Dive, and Earthquake hits dig.
Earthquake hits dig is famous.
But that gust hits Fly for extra damage CD was truly educational.
I personally feel like XD was trying to be an intro to competitive game, atleast with all the sidemodes dedicated to teaching niche mechanics and some properly built teams.
I remember that one trainer in area 6 or 7 of MT Battle with a rain team where half his mons spam hydropump and the other half spam thunder. Kid me didn't know what was happening and had such a hard time. (My team was being carried by a massively overleveled Claydol and Donphan and hydropump hit them like a truck, and everyone else died to thunder.)
Don't forget sky uppercut being a blatant street fighter reference and hitting bounce and fly as well
I like the B roll footage where Good Luck Gryan defeats Fake Gameplay. Truly a clash of the titans
Flygon actually learns Fly in gen 3 as well, but since it's a 2 turns move, it's easily avoided by the enemy, and since it makes physical contact, opposing to Gust, it can procc Breloom's effect spore and cripple itself.
This is why I love draft league formats so much. People running the craziest sets to counter specific threats, like power herb dig Shiftry to counter a Heatran. Or Heracross using natural gift while holding a pomeg berry to become an ice type move and super effectively hit a flying type that's incoming in on a switch
What's your favorite draft league set? Mine is Endure Salac Berry Reversal Zeraora. My opponent had a rain team with zero priority
10:26 Folks, Jimothy has accidentally revealed critical information here. He has provided us the exact amount of HP that is defined as a "sliver." Let it be known from here on out that a sliver of HP is exactly 46%.
It beggars belief that Flygon doesn't learn Aerial Ace
Well it is Fly "gone" after all.
As a proud appletun enjoyer, I believe appletun should be a part of the horse council too. First of all, it can learn high horsepower using a TM. Secondly, it has a highly boopable nose just like any other horse pokemon. finally, it evolves from applin using an apple item, and according to minecraft horses love apples.
You missed flamethrower Aerodactyl Jimothy.
I don't think anyone else has used it, but in gen 7 pure hackmons, I used scarf arena trap Kartana with Oceanic Operetta to lure in shadow tag Primal Groudon once (Crabhammer isn't a guaranteed ohko while operetta is)
I have been into Pokemon since before the millenial year-shift, and I could barely understand the words, let alone the meaning of this suggestion.
I trust it is really good, you seem confident, and they say presentation is key
I can't remember if it was from Gen 4 or 5 but I specifically remember a Special Garchomp set that was meant to punish its usual switch ins. I always thought it was pretty neat.
Chain Chomp, it's been used in multiple gens as a gimmick but originated in Gen 4 (in Diamond and Pearl when it was still legal in OU)
17:01
"Can inflict paralysis against anything in the game"
Hitmonlee: "Am I a joke to you?"
I laughed pretty hard when I saw the goldengo trick a pecha berry onto the gliscor. That helped heal probably a decade of trauma and anger and fear.
I don’t know if anybody has mentioned it yet but on the topic of Fling, Kyurem Black in flipping Ubers utilized it to great success and actually almost got on a suspect test because of it back in Gen 8
When Kyurem Black got introduced into Ubers, it was immediately OP until Necrozma Dusk Mane walled the crap out of it, and unless it dug into its Gen 5 roots with Earth Power, Necrozma just was not dying.
By holding TR43 Fling would become a 130 base attack fire type move based off of Overheat, but stay physical so with a +1 attack from dragon dance, fling had a chance to do 91-105% damage in one go, and catching it on the switch would just chunk the Necrozma in the process anyways. It was so OP that many stall players clambered to ban Kyurem on the spot, but considering this was a one time fling and could be predicted it never went through. It was a genuinely viable strat for Xerneas teams to allow Kyurem to chunk the most viable wall then Xerneas (or Zacian) would come in and clean up
I like using Band Gengar in Gen 3..
Shadow Ball/Sludge Bomb/Explode/Focus Punch
simple and surprising
Band gengar is hilarios, i've had opponents forfeit more than once upon realizing it was band gengar. I even had tbolt over sludge bomb to bluff further and damage skarms
Unfortunate that flygon cant learn something like arieal ace
Random thought but i think it'd have been cool if instead of getting the the ancient versions of the legendary dogs, they became bird versions of themselves based direct on the original legendary birds and vice versa or even if they had say the shiny forms been based on the other legendary trying
About to watch the video proper, but I need you to know that this thumbnail is _so_ funny.
Flygon is so _exultant,_ and Breloom...they can't be mad; they're not even disappointed. Just, concerned. XD
If someone pulled that Gholdengo Trick strat on me I would be laughing so hard that I’d timeout my next move
On that gliscor set, replace wing attack with acrobatics and you got yourself a power house.
There really is a fine line between gimmicks and masterminds
This thumbnail is life!😂😂😂 The counter Tyranitar is super cool, and the Burning croissant is clever
I felt so smart the moment I saw the last build and knew EXACTLY what it was for before you even began explaining its purpose. I think that's proof of just how much I've learned from your videos!
I also love the one-time-use techs like Fling. Natural Gift ground Talonflame was so fire in gen 6 for Heatran
4:50
The bars... why do they gyrate to and fro so gracefully? So serenely? Perhaps they are shaking in their boots because explosion?
:o nice catch.. gengar is scared of its own potential. kinetic potential i presume.
Someone get this man to 100k subs
By making this video, you have stolen our element of surprise >:(
Now everyone will be expecting the Tyranitar counter!
Dont worry, people still gets murked by Focus Punch Gengar even after 20 years
In competitive Pokémon , most popular builds on popular Pokémon will consist of the best options in the entire game…..
Think of: Choice Specs Dragapult with Draco Meteor and Shadow Ball
Apparently Flygon doesn't get Aerial Ace in Gen 3 and only in Gen 3. I did not know this.
16:54 The colour scheme of Gliscor matches surprisingly well with the Light ball
Wanna say that flame orb psycho shift is also used by sigilygh. But I believe it only really uses that set in Gen five but it’s actually better than cress’ because it gets magic guard.
.
Also raise your hand if you only found out about gusts secondary effect from this vid
I love Scarf Skarm, been using that set way too much.
An important thing you forgot to mention is that lead Azelf typically tries to taunt lead Skarm. This Skarm is eved to outspeed Azelf by 1, so you can spike as they try to taunt you, pretty much wasting their turn.
Another funny interaction that happens sometimes is with lead scarf trick Azelf. They try to cripple your Skarm with a scarf and are in for a rude awakening.
What are the Special Attack EVs on that flygon doing bro 😭😭😭
An average gen 9 NU player switching avalugg into a Ddance flygon thinking its going to take the hit and oneshot with avalance(Its actually mixed flygon with tera normal boomburst which then 6-0d the team totally not speaking from experience btw)
@@Stop-cookinglol
looks like he copypasted it from Smogon recommended sets and it recommonds 4 SpA EVs because Fire Blast is a move option for the 4th move, obviously you shouldn't use 4 SpA EVs if you don't have Fire Blast though
I ran fling light ball annihilape during the team star challenge. You fling the opposing revaroom and use EQ to knock them out. Max Spe Ape outspeeds a +2 para revaroom. I got a lot of easy wins of that set.
tricking a pecha berry onto gliscor is slick as hell
Regarding Flame Orb Psycho Shift Cresselia it gets even crazier when we visit smogon strategy guide:
"Psycho Shift + Flame Orb can debilitate Cresselia's counters; in particular, a set of Rest, Sleep Talk, Psycho Shift, and Solar Beam can cripple Jirachi and Tyranitar with sleep or a burn. This set can also sponge Trick and pass a Flame Orb to the opponent in the process. However, this set is extremely passive. Solar Beam is used because Sleep Talk cannot summon it, giving Cresselia a 50% chance to pass sleep."
just wanted to say ive recently been using the almighty muk in the ru tier recently and he's been absolutely muktastic. truely a phenomenal pokemon indeed.
Best mukemon
How will the Trick Pecha Berry on Gholdengo effect Old Money's legacy?
I remember focus punching Tyranitars with Gengar back in Netbattle, this was the exact moment I fell in love with competitive Pokemon
You just unlocked my memories about Netbattle and Shoddy.
Love Breloom's anguished look of concern in the thumbnail.
Your videos are changing my mindset on the pre-split era so dramatically. Specially Gen 3...all this variety is what modern pokemon is missing. People like me usually think that removing the legendaries would remove a lot of the stagnation of seeing the same pokemon all the time but sadly Reg H has proven that to be false...The gen 3 OU meta on the other hand is very interesting.
I knew gen 3 had a lot of crazy sets but to see something as innovating as that gholdengo in current day is amazing
Another crazy set I’ve always liked is timid kartana. This thing has an unheard of attack stat, yet you go with a minus atk nature just to get a beast boost in speed
You know Jimothy is an OG when he calls the Pecha berry the “PsnCureBerry.”
Pecha berry trick is the funniest set I've ever seen, everything cursed about gen 9 was worth it for this
How on earth does Flygon not get Aerial Ace?
The Gholdengo one was really interesting. It’s so multilayered with the Toxic removal, Toxic immunity, and Toxic placement on a separate opposing Pokemon.
Is that the Balatro song? You're so real for that Jim
The fact that the Gen1 Pokemon Muk will inevitably receive 1 million USD despite Jimothy only reaching 100k subscribers proves once and for all that Muk carries the power of 10 within its beautiful sludge covered body. I am not aware of any other Pokemon able to do such feats. Truly incredible.
My favorite, though mundane, will always be Energy Ball Jellicent due to the sheer reaction the one guy had
I've seen Snorlax in later gens run Crunch as their only damaging option for the same reason as HP Steel. Rest Talkers and multi boosting sets just don't have the room for more than one attacking move most of the time. Sigilyph uses Flame Orb Psycho Shift a ton due to its access to Magic Guard. I think the amount of immunities also helps a lot for Focus Punch sets. Opens up more and safer switch ins to the point of sometimes running into Pokemon that can't even hit you. Might do some more brainstorming on Focus Punch as a Ghost type option because its genuinely really good when paired with moves that encourage switches, such as Hypnosis, early gen Confuse Ray and even Mind Reader.
Balatro ost. Good choice man. Was wondering why I was hearing two soundtracks at once.
I love doing weird and unusual things with my pokemon teams. I don't play competitive, but a friend and I have been going through the series, battling each other on occasion, and I love using moves that he wouldn't expect to deal with some of his members I usually normally couldn't with my team comp, like using Natural Gift with a berry to do have a fire type attack on my Leafeon to deal with a Scizor switch in, or Peck on Mamoswine to surprise his potential Heracross switch in
Didn't expect the Messi reference at 18:55 Jimothy
THAT ANTI-GLIWCOR SET IS SO NICE I LOVE IT
One time I had a crazy idea for a defensive Noivern set that could beat any Kyurem-until I remembered that Dragon Tail has negative priority.
PechaTrick Gholdengo is my new spirit animal
I like quick attack on CB Flygon. It hits salac berry mons
I used to watch a guy named mtgxerxes like 15 years ago, and he sometimes used the psycho shift Cresselia set. He also ran it on a sleep talk set to transfer sleep to the opponent. Child me found that really cool!
I have an unorthodox Great Tusk with max speed investment and booster energy. Bulk Up + Rapid Spin + Headlong Rush + Knock Off - It is super niche and it's supposed to set up on rocks when the Gholdengo comes in to block rapid spin. 9 times out of 10 it is running air balloon, so that's what knock off is for. Nothing crazy, but it trips people up and it can easily get out of hand if left to continue stacking rapid spins and bulk ups.
I remembered watching somewhere, similar to Gengar, the Alakazam line also used to run Focus Punch in Gen 3 just for Blissey lol
Looking at that gliscor set I’m wondering if in gen 5 you could run acrobatics instead of wing attack and make losing your item from fling provide even more value.
I think the problem here is that as soon as Gliscor fails to poison itself, they'll know something is up. When its only ability was Hyper Cutter it was a lot easier to hide the surprise.
thanks for the daily uploads, jim we love u
I play Gen 9 Mono Type.
I love seeing a Corviknight or a Skarmory trying to set up on me not realising they're staring down a Choice Specs Fire Blast from a Garchomp 😂
That strat against Gliscor reminds me of a game I had where I shut down a Gliscor using Trick. I used Prankster Whimsicott with Choice Specs. I knew they would Protect first turn, so I used Trick. They were stuck with Protect (and not poisoned) so I figured they would switch. So I used Trick again (which could have backfired but thankfully didn’t) and I ended up giving their Speed Boost Blaziken a Toxic Orb. They ragequit right away.
Cool video, especially the Gholdengo part
Can you rest, sleep talk, psycho shift your sleep onto the enemy? That would be hilarious
Yes, that works, but is pretty hard to abuse.
I will expect to see a check to Muk soon
2:28 I wish there was a format where you simply had 5 move slots on every pokemon and otherwise current gen OU. It would be pretty interesting to see what develops. If there is such a format, could you make a video on it some time?
No Natural Gift sets? In gen 6 I used Natural Gift Chople Berry Talon flame to pop Tyranitar and Heatran. I remember others ran Rindo Berry for similar reasons. Was it good? Not really, but I had fun with it.
a fun thing i did personally was running gastro acid on serperior in gen 9 vgc. works a trick against a lot of stuff like chlorophyll mons and archaludon
Jimothy (on Fling): "I like things [that give you a single use move option that you would normally not have].
Also Jimothy (on his favorite competitive generations): "I don't like Z-moves as a mechanic."
I get not liking base 200 power moves though (even if explosion is everywhere in gen 3).
What happens when you are asleep and use sleep talk and thereby select the move psycho shift. I know this would take up three moves in rest talk and psycho shift but that would be very creative.
when playing casually i found it fun to use weavile with poison barb fling, and also thief!
I run Trailblaze T-Grass Seviper in Gen 9 OU and it gets work done. It needs help, like Sticky Web, but so does stuff like Kingambit or Gholdengo so they’re basically the same.
Hidden Power Bug in Flygon is so neat because is a dragonfly but not bug type, so it feels like he's idk using his hidden bug type
We all know that the Pokemon with the weirdest competitive build is Machamp, who is unable to enter any bodybuilding competition because it has 4 arms, making it unfair for the other participants.
We’re Jimothy Cool subscribers, of course we write the script of the video in a comment chain immediately after being posted.
Muk will have his political position boosted significantly with the sudden influx of capital generously donated by Jimothy Cool, I wonder if this will manage to secure him a leading position in the polls.
When it comes to Flame Orb + Psycho Shift, I instantly think of the Cosmic Power Sigilyph
Gotta be the funniest thumbnail
17:38 I'd imagine flinging king's rock is one of those things thats a lot better in doubles than singles
Gen 6 UU. Pair a physical Nidokimg with a special Sharpedo. No one expects either to be run that way. They'll throw their special tank/wall out against Nidoking and have it ruined and/or they use their physical tank/wall against Sharpedo to have it ruined.
