Gotta say gen 5 OU is my favorite, the weather wars it has are super interesting to me. Having a field effect that buffs my team and having to contest it like it is king of the hill is fun. It also gives me multiple team core options that don’t work in non permanent gens. Like rain Ferrothorn or Sand Reuniclus. It has enough depth for second level synergy without devolving into hit boosting move kill three mons, besides Volcarona but no boots means it needs lots of support to safely hit the field. Mega’s are cool and all but the fact that only some Pokemon have them makes it feel like you need it. Not that it is all that bad Mega Lopunny is in my top three favorite mons after all.
I’ve been a long time Gen 4 lover, but your vids have made me consider Gen 3 just as good, perhaps even better. They’re def my two favorite OUs. Gen 4 UU is the best tier of all tho.
before watching, i think gen 3, 4, and 5 are probably the best, but imo gen 6 oras was way more fun than any others. mega beedrill and mega banette are sleepers, loved using the lower tier mons in higher tiers. belly drum slurpuff was awesome too for that matter! even tho it also had the issue of seeing a team with slowbro and metagross, for example, and quaking in your boots bc if either mega'd (you know one would!), you're pretty much screwed! never been more terrifying 😂
Jim, I've been watching you for a long time now and finally tried Smogon (Gen3 OU) for the first time last night. In 3 games I lost one, made the guy forfeit game 2 and won with last Zapdos against Milotic game 3. We're gaming! And it's all thanks to you. Cheers.
IMO Early generation 4 was the most fun period. It was the first time moves of the same type could be physical or special, and it opened up a lot of possibilities and there was a lot of experimenting back then.
I honestly disagree with gen 8 ou last. I'm probably biased cause I got back into competitive singles while it was the current gen, but I really enjoyed the format. As you mentioned, there is a lot of support, and I think that makes it very fun to bring weird stuff. Once gen 9 arrived, ou was just an absolute mess and I switched to almost exclusively playing gen 3.
Gen 5 is my favourite, but 4 is a close second. 5 is the most, well, pokemon gen. Like teams actually felt built around proper themes you could see being a trainers team in game. But 4 was the amazing clusterfuck gen, in the best way possible, you never could expect the same match twice. Gen 7-9 feel like going through the motions less so than outmatching your opponent.
I didn't know that, transitioned mostly to vgc last few gens but I'll absolutely take a look later today. Thank you for the tip, I really appreciate it!
@@Turai12Jim has been playing Gen 4 Ubers games on his streams this month! He’s been going live on Sundays recently at nighttime on east/central coast of US.
I REALLY like gen 7 competitive. I know it's a divisive meta game, but I truly felt like you could play anything you wanted as long as you understood the meta well enough. I peaked at like 1630 elo playing a mega venusaur team.
9 - Sword and Shield (banning the gen defining mechanic defenitely hurt) 8 - Sun and Moon (absolutely agree with it being chaotic I would "quit mons" every week) 7 - Scarlet Violet (yeah, i've been hating the last 3 gens, everything feels super unfair) 6 - Gen 1(hax fest, enjoyable however) 5 - Gen 3 (maybe i'm just bad at it but I don't like clicking protect with my swampert) 4 - Gen 2 (too slow but can be fun) 3 - Gen 5 (my first competitive gen but definetely not the best) 2 - DPP (Super fun, I love it) 1 - Gen 6 ORAS (there's something about clicking scald with keldeo I love, I'm sorry, there's no other gen where you can quite pull up with RU's and put in work) Great vid :]
ive played pokemon from the beginning but gen 6 was when i discovered showdown. its definitely one of my favorite metas. it just feels right. i miss mixing people up with my power-up punch greninja set in ou
Gen 6 was very solid, not sure what it’s settled into these days but the modern type chart and weather nerf were sensible changes that sorted out gen 5’s major problems. Megas gave us a naturally fast and aggressive meta but with predictability, it was good quick fun.
Gen 7 OU is my favorite because of how polarizing it is. It has that wacky “if everything is broken then nothing is” aura. Not gonna say its balanced, but I personally believe that nothing is too polarizing this generation because it’s usually kept in check by other things. Every type of team (stall, HO, etc) is good and not one gameplan dominates the meta. Z-moves are a bit polarizing, but even then I think they’re better than tera. There’s enough counterplay to them and they cost you your item slot which is good. They’re great against stall and defensive checks and help out wallbreakers.
this might be my favorite video from you, recently played through all the gens and hearing another plays opinions on what makes a metagame good or fun is a nice change of pace
Jim should do a video where he ranks fringe competitive formats like the following: RBY tradebacks, Gen 4 LC, Gen 5 DW (dream world), almost any ability, fusion, etc. it would be an interesting video and might help stimulate some competition in those formats. Love the videos Jim keep being cool ❤
the good thing about Sun/Moon OU is that a) Knock off is balanced by Z and Mega Stones and b) Lando + Magearna can check every threat in the meta and allow you to bring a lot of interesting compositions.
1: gen 3 2: gen 6 3: gen 4 4: gen 5 5: gen 9 6: gen 7 7: gen 1 8: gen 8 9: gen 2 Gen 3 is on top with 100% credit to your videos, they've inspired me to try it and it's such a blast👌🏻
Peak of competitive Pokémon was VGC2016, all other games (even gen 7+) have some bs that feel pretty unfun to play against in them. Gen 5 has gems, gen 7+ has incineroar, gen 7 specifically has Z moves, gen 1 and 2 are a joke and so on Only main criticism you can make about vgc16 is most people used the weather trio and xerneas for their 2 restricted legendaries. but that doesn’t make them the end all be all. Many other restricted legendaries were up there still, like dialga, mega mewtwo X, yveltal, kyurem white and others. I am going to rank every single generation of pokemon from a competitive point of view, with a focus on the OU format for competitive singles in each game.
Not a fan of this list, but the video was still entertaining 👍 genuinely believe a large part of reason for ADV's player boom was that SV sucks very bad.
gen three is the best because charizard is good and i like charizard hes a cool dragon that breathes fire, he also is really strong and fast and i have a charizard ex shiny card and ill never trade it to you jimothy, its MY charizard ex shiny card and i dont care about your yvetal ex charizard is way cooler
Iron Mugulus was not mentioned in the list of Pokemon in generation 9 that Jimothy Cool has an amicable relationship with. This suggests the two are having a falling out due to unseen drama. We need answers, Jim.
Gen 6 is when I became interested in competitive singles so I am biased, but I wholeheartedly agree that it is by far the best modern metagame. Megas give teams a new type of identity to them that didn't exist in the same way prior or since without ramping the power to the ultramoon.
I feel like if I were going to try and return to any of the old games for OU it'd probably be 3, 4, and 5. I really loved Gen 5 and the weather war stuff was kind of annoying at the time but the fact Hail is something finding use as an anti-meta strategy is something I just find fun from playing Monotype in 6 and 7 where Ice, easily the worst type, is something I loved trying to win with.
I really like gen 8 OU mostly because it's where I started to unravel the world of competitive Pokemon battles but also because of how methodical it is. Everything is in its right place and there's a tool for everything. It's a very slow metagame with some incredibly stupid mechanics but I personally like it a lot.
Have you ever gotten into lower tiers Jim? I first got into competitive playing black and white NU and stuff and used to have a lot of fun playing with lower power level mons.
i agree with all of these rankings besides gen 8, it might be a little boring or annoying but it's one of the most competitively solid gens we've ever had so i would rank it in the number 5 spot and shift the others down. there's a lot of badly designed mechanics in the tier but that's equally true for every modern gen, the only difference in gen 8 is that the crazy defensive mons are just as good as the crazy offensive mons which makes everyone hate it on principle, but if you look past that it's incredibly well balanced and gives you way more control over the game than any other modern gen. offense is also perfectly viable in gen 8, if you want you can run crawdaunt rain, victini sun, excadrill sand, hail with aurora veil, trick room, sticky web HO, hazard stack, dragmag or literally anything else you can think of, and even on balance teams there's some amazing offensive threats to use like volcanion, tapu lele, kartana, volcarona, dragapult and weavile just to name a few popular ones. gen 8 is the modern gen equivalent of gen 2, it might not be the most exciting but it's the purest competitive experience, it just gets misunderstood as a stallfest and unfairly hated as a result.
My opinion has always been that the series peaked at gen 3. Gen 1 is peak nostalgia, gen 2 is peak strategy, and gen 3 is peak fun. Abilities & being able to meaningfully customize the same Pokemon's stats were the perfect finishing touches on the battle mechanics
My favorite generations are the ones that find the best balance between offensive and defensive gameplay. Speaking quite frankly as someone who’s not very good at competitive if I’m being honest, but almost every generation is going to have things on either end of that spectrum that I dislike.
Finally some respect on Gen 6's name. Every gen since 6 has had "new toy syndrome" where GF wanted to make the new toys the best toys. In Gen 6 it was megas, then it was Tapus and Ultra Beasts then general power creep then general power creep with the Paradox mons. The best new toy though was definitely megas. And they haven't found a toy better yet.
I propose that gen 7 is the best for competitive singles. That is because it's somewhat healthy and has room for variations in the form of Z-moves. You will at some point see some outsider pick, some random RU pokémon just shine in specific teams. It's also the generation where spreads are up in the air. Is this Zapdos a physical wall, or is it that wild Agility sweeper set? Etc...
I like gen 1 the most since in other games there's so many possibilities it's easy to come across a team that's just good against yours but in gen 1 everyone is using similar teams to everyone else so it's very consistent fast paced and prediction focused.
I had a dream last night that the move Psychic got banned in gen 5, and the moves Psychic, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Blizzard, Fireblast, Thunder, and Explosion all got banned in gen 9. I have no idea why this would ever happen, but I was pissed. I was like, "What's Alakazam supposed to do now?" and then someone showed me a replay of Alakazam one-shotting an entire team in gen 5. Anyway, long story short I was very relieved when I woke up this morning.
I appreciate calling out gen 7 stall for being absolutely atrocious to play against, and with for that matter. Hopping into a game and seeing some combination of chansey, mega sableye, toxapex, ferrothorn, skarmory, zapdos, clefable, etc. and you know you’re in for a bad time regardless of if you win or lose.
Every competitive OU gen has one interesting thing about it that makes it more interesting, like how gen 5 is the weather gen or gen 2 is the Snorlax gen Meanwhile gen 8 is... Boots gen? It's pretty boring imo, it's like the "make as many safe plays as possible" it's just... Eh
With your favorites being Gens 3 and 4, thought experiment-- what do you think these gens would look like if Sand Stream didn't exist in the meta? (i.e. if Ttar/Hippowdown had their hidden abilities-- Unnerve/Sand Force-- until Gen 5 when the Weather Wars introduced Torkoal/Polytoad)
Gen 1 is so dumb and simple it feels good to plug and play for me honestly. Also congrats on the sponsor I was happy to have an ad to skip on this channel bwhahah
How dare Jim mislead me with this title. I believed he would rank the metagames by how competitive they are, however Jim here has clearly ranked them by how much he enjoys them. He will never earn a seat on the Horse Council.
Gee I wonder what number 1 will be 🤔 But yeah this video just shows I fundamentlally disagree with him on what Pokemon should be - it should be fast paced, where literally every move matters a lot. That's what makes VGC so great.

I really like gen 8 OU mostly because it's where I started to unravel the world of competitive Pokemon battles but also because of how methodical it is. Everything is in its right place and there's a tool for everything. It's a very slow metagame with some incredibly stupid mechanics but I personally like it a lot.
what about bdsp and lgplge ou?
Both bad
BDSP OU got ruined in 2 days.
as a casual, i love gen 9 the most because all the movesets are great, and I love tera competitively, both doubles and singles are the most fun for me
GSC is in the top third of Jim's games! Let's freaking goooooo!
Wow a Jimothy ranking video, I wonder what his favorite will be
My opinion has always been that the series peaked at gen 3. Gen 1 is peak nostalgia, gen 2 is peak strategy, and gen 3 is peak fun. Abilities & being able to meaningfully customize the same Pokemon's stats were the perfect finishing touches on the battle mechanics
I love that no one is defending melmetal that thing is universally agreed yo be atrocious
Gen 9 might have my favourite Pokémon, they are all so epic. But the powerlevel is just insane
Every competitive OU gen has one interesting thing about it that makes it more interesting, like how gen 5 is the weather gen or gen 2 is the Snorlax gen
Meanwhile gen 8 is... Boots gen? It's pretty boring imo, it's like the "make as many safe plays as possible" it's just... Eh
It's the zeraora gen 🗣🗣🗣
We’re so close to getting all type’s ranked!!
I really like gen 5 NU, exclusively because that's what I played and have nostalgia for.
Gee I wonder what number 1 will be 🤔
But yeah this video just shows I fundamentlally disagree with him on what Pokemon should be - it should be fast paced, where literally every move matters a lot. That's what makes VGC so great.
With the recent developments i think it is safe to assume Venom will be a promenent member of the horse council folks
im honestly amazed rby and gsc made it that far
I think Gen 3 is the biggest improvement on the previous gen. But I do think Gen 4 was the height of competitive singles.
