Teena Marie was one of the most underrated singer in the 80's but it was a shame that she didn't get the recognition that she deserve at that time but RIP Lady T!
Along with Laura Branigan another white woman with serious pipes that many people don't think about when they think Greats of the '80s, RIP to both of them
My daughter was with me at her last concert before she passed, she said dad I didn’t know she was white , she had been jamming lady t since she was a kid , RIP Lady T
I have yet to understand why this woman is so damn underrated. When people mention Prince, Michael, Whitney, and Mariah... Teena should definitely be apart of that super group. She had everything, The Talent, The Innovation, The Artistry and The Longevity. She wasn't a boxed R&B singer (meaning she didn't make the typical R&B music that everyone else was making or following trends that everyone else was doing). She had her own sound. A lot of her work Slays MOST Nippy and Mimi's catalogue. No Shade, No Stanning
It was simple. She was hard to Market. A White Girl doing R & B it didn't make sense. She said she wasn't allowed on the Cover of her Fist Motown Album because she's White but Berry Gordy insisted that he wanted people to think she was Black. She also fought for Artists Royalties. Also, wouldn't this Song be a great Mash-up to Duran Duran's The Reflex
laminage But still...people found ways to marketed The Beastie Boys, Janis Joplin...and others who were doing black music..it's not like she was appropriating. Not only that but she doesn't have many songs that reached the top 10. my mom has ALL her albums. Every last one has classics on them. I think that has much to do with the marketing too. I can only find 6 music videos of hers and music videos were big deal in the 80s and I can't find much of her performances in the 80s besides the Soul Train ones either. Even pictures of her are extremely rare.
You're right about that. I live in Canada and growing up in the 1980's I never heard her Music on The Radio. Also, in MTV's Infancy they almost "Never" Played Songs by Black Artists.
kayteeelle Probably as much the fans fault, too. Of course today, it's so much easier for fans to give feedback to the music industry about how much they enjoy certain performers. Back then, not so much. It's a shame because every time I heard her songs on the radio, I wanted to hear more from her.
this Song came out in 1984,not in 1979,but yeah Teena was Amazing as artist at that time and i don't understand why she is so Underrated As artist if she was a Great artist,a Great Songwriter And she had a incredible and powerfull Voice.
I’m 75 and I really do enjoy hearing this maybe twice a week. I plug my iPhone into my car stereo and blast this pretty loud. She was truly a great artist.
Well, that's the interesting part: She really didn't cross racial barriers. She was a white woman who proudly and authentically created black music. Aside from "Lover Girl," she never truly crossed over to white audiences. And she was okay with that. One of her biggest professional thrills was to perform on Soul Train.
Saw Teena Marie with Rick James at the Spectrum in Philly sometime in the eighties. Luther Vandross opened. It was a great show! All three are gone now. Those were great days! She rocked the place!

Prince spent a lot of time on FAMU CAMPUS IN MY MOTHER IN LAW'S OFFICE AND DONATED MONEY TO DR. FOSTER, LEADER and founder OF FAMU'S MARCHING 100 BOTH TIMES, and they did the superbowl halftime show, AND TO THE NATIONAL RETENTION CENTER OWNED AND RUN BY DR. CLINITA FORD. MY MOTHER IN LAW.
All of these concerts were in Tallahassee between 82 and 88.
Check your facts.
I have been to every concert within 300 miles of where I live that I wanted to go to. It is easier to get tickets if you are in TV OR RADIO.
Instead of using my money to buy expensive cars, I went to concerts.
Rick James was in Tallahassee in 85 and escorted out of town for smoking a blunt on stage....
Saw Teena the same year in Atlanta.
So, Travis Weathers,
I am not lieing!
I'm a LADY AND WOULD NEVER TALK TO ANOTHER HUMAN LIKE THAT.
BE A GENTLEMAN!
This Lovergirl will never be forgotten.
I miss everything about the 80's, the hair, makeup, clothes....*sigh*
Me too!!!
the blue eye shadow...yikes...sooooooo late '70's to mid '80's
Transport Girl Hustle : I miss the 80's if self I'm 48 now but i would love to go back to 18
@@markhunt7919 I'm also 48. The 80's were the best!

Legends don't die, they become what they leave behind. Thanks to her ocean of music Teena Marie will live forever. Her voice is a gift from God to the world.
What a legend!! She killed it on this video! Her craft was unlike no other! RIP LADY T!
can you please let me know what happened to Teena Marie.i see r.i.p.i didnt.know or hear about her.
😎🖤👍what a voice..
@@tammiberg3813 unfortunately, there was a freak accident at a hotel where a heavy picture frame fell on her head. After that, she had seizures. 6 years after that incident, she appeared to have died in her sleep, but medical experts believed she died of a seizure :(
I was a couple of years late when I heard of her death I had no idea! I was trying to go see her in concert a few years prior
Incredible singer and songwriter and her work with Rick James was pure magic!!
Teena Marie was one of the most underrated singer in the 80's but it was a shame that she didn't get the recognition that she deserve at that time but RIP Lady T!
Teena never underrated!!!! true fans like US
Along with Laura Branigan another white woman with serious pipes that many people don't think about when they think Greats of the '80s, RIP to both of them
I agree with you...Laura Branigan in the 1980's was so
amazing too
Stacy Knight Laura was okay. I'd take Teena over her anyday...
buster60341 Yeah, why did she not get more exposure? She certainly had a lot of talent.
My daughter was with me at her last concert before she passed, she said dad I didn’t know she was white , she had been jamming lady t since she was a kid , RIP Lady T
This is what the 80’s sounded like
This is what the funky 80s sounded like and there were TONS of R&B legends. Add the shredder hair bands....and the best decade in music history.
For Blacks and Italian Guidos...And Spanish...I gravitated towards hair bands and Metal...
@Victor R. not so Gladiator boy! Lady Gaga still rules the air waves!
Now it sounds like Cardi B smh 😅😅😅
Yes! Indeed.
Teena Marie was a BOSS. Her music has stood the test of time.
I just think she deserves to be way more overrated than she is.
kayteeelle Probably as much the fans fault, too. Of course today, it's so much easier for fans to give feedback to the music industry about how much they enjoy certain performers. Back then, not so much. It's a shame because every time I heard her songs on the radio, I wanted to hear more from her.
Teena was the SH**!! This will NEVER not be a jam!
Legendary Teena Marie. She knew how to belt it out. She was awesome. I still remember dancing to this back in 79 when it first came out
this Song came out in 1984,not in 1979,but yeah Teena was Amazing as artist at that time and i don't understand why she is so Underrated As artist if she was a Great artist,a Great Songwriter And she had a incredible and powerfull Voice.
Ya this song released 1984, nice try.
This song came out in 84 if I remember correctly; I know you don't though, wrong decade
Do your homework you were not dancing to this in 1979 because it came out in 85 or 86.
Teena Maria was way more incredible than people will ever know
Thank you Cicely Tyson for directing this video. Your talents were so vast❤ Thank you Teena for that voice of life. Exist in peace ladies.
Wow u didn't know she directed this
@@julithomp5612 😆I did not find that info out when I posted this. I knew for quite some time.
Or did you mean to put an "I" instead of that "u?" 🤔
Error....trust me.
This girl could sing!!!
She's ok

One the greatest vocalists and artists of ALL time!
She should get more recognition for the music industry
I agree
When somebody asks me why I love the 80s I just show them this. This is that pure energy that oozes 80s groove. Love it
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas show 'em Glamorous Life by Sheila E. and 'Tell It To My Heart by Taylor Dayne ;-)
Incredible song ❤️🔥
This gives the meaning... either YOU GOT IT or you don't... She had it! 🎸🎼🎵🎤
These kids nowadays don't know what good music is. I watched this on night tracks as a kid. 80's was the best decade ever, sorry to all who missed it!
+Marty Garcia Amen,Brother!
+Marty Garcia -- the 80s were the absolute best years for music!!!!!! I'm happy for enjoying the experience.
I do
I agree. The best
i always say same 80s was best decade!!
I’m 75 and I really do enjoy hearing this maybe twice a week. I plug my iPhone into my car stereo and blast this pretty loud. She was truly a great artist.
Ditto
Feb 2025! Who's still jamming to this classic! 😎🤟💜🎶
I remember my Mom playing this song when her friends came over for the weekend.I’m 43 and still listening to it on a daily basis.
Came here today because she's trending on Twitter today as an artist all black people love. She crossed racial barriers.
Well, that's the interesting part: She really didn't cross racial barriers. She was a white woman who proudly and authentically created black music. Aside from "Lover Girl," she never truly crossed over to white audiences. And she was okay with that. One of her biggest professional thrills was to perform on Soul Train.
@@stannote8312 created black music? 🤣🤣
This is THE BASS tone of all time. Bass players, tell me I’m wrong.
Has Rick James's influence all over. Funky bass line
You are correct!!!
The bass from the Ohio players, you better recognize.
He's definitely playing like like he was born with the bass
It's a great tone. Not great for everything. It fits the song.
I love you, Teena! You were fabulous. I am now 69, and this song is still on my top ten❤
she was a BEAST with that voice and guitar!!!
Saw Teena Marie with Rick James at the Spectrum in Philly sometime in the eighties. Luther Vandross opened. It was a great show! All three are gone now. Those were great days! She rocked the place!
Goodness, I can't even imagine how great a show that must have been! You were so lucky to see 3 great musical artists in their prime.
That sounds amazing. You're so lucky to have experienced that!
john scherwin You have great taste! :^)
Wow would've loved to see that show, btw cocaine is a helluva drug lol.
😎👍
Ahead of her time, soulful, legendary. What a performer and gifted singer/songwriter/musician. Rapping when women weren’t quite at that level yet. Gone way too soon. Saw her live with Rick James in 1981 and they brought the house down! You are sincerely missed, Lady T ❤ 🎶
Went to one of her last concerts in Philly, The voice of an ANGEL!!!
The Blue Eyed Soul Queen of Motown, so glad I got to witness her in her hey day, may she never be forgotten..
I totally forgot about this one. Saw it in the right had of another song & couldn't believe what I was seeing!
Teena Baby The one !

Teena Marie,,,,seen her at a car show in el monte

I love her! I miss her too. Music was so much better back then. They could actually sing and play their own instruments. I grew up listening to Teena.
