True enough, but what's the point of being worth close to a billion dollars if you have to keep it a secret?

@@alabamaal225 he provides people with jobs, creates value (how much value in dr*gs is debatable ofc) and donates to charity
@@OK-yy6qz Gus Fring undoubtedly did launder his drug income through Los Pollos Hermanos and other outwardly legitimate businesses. But there's a limit as to how much this can be done. For obvious reasons, mostly cash businesses are prominent on the IRS radar. The IRS has formulas for different business models which predict how much a business should report. They plug in the known stats and determine that Los Pollos Hermanos should be reporting X dollars in a period. If Los Pollos Hermanos reported 1.5X dollars, it probably wouldn't raise a flag; the IRS's calculation is just an estimate and Los Pollos Hermanos may just be better managed than it's competitors. However, if Los Pollos Hermanos started reporting 3X or more, way above estimates, the IRS would probably want to know how they did this.
IRS agents have been known to sit outside of bars and nightclubs and count how many customers go in during a period. Clearly, if some dive reports income indicating that each customer on average spends $800 a visit, something is amiss.
The famous scene where Walter and Skyler stared at the millions of dollars in cash piled in front of them in that storage unit says it all. For the most part, that money might as well be on the moon. They couldn't just start spending it because others, especially Hank, would wonder just where it came from, attracting unwanted attention.
his legal money off his restaurant is enough to live lavishly, so i don't see why he would choose to stay living a modest life
I love most Breaking Bad characters, but Gus is just such an uniquely awesome character. He is like a human Swiss Army knife (every time I think there is no cool things left about him I find another).
Walt describes Fring's meth organization "A company large enough to be listed on the NASDAQ"
To be listed on the NASDAQ, a company must have a minimum aggregate cash flow of at least $27.5 million for the past three fiscal years, with no negative cash flow in any of those three years.
Also, its average market capitalization over the prior 12 months must be at least $550 million, and revenues in the previous fiscal year must be $110 million, minimum.
Nice
From Gus it seems like power control and revenge are the 3 most important then followed by loyalty and finally MONEY!
There is just so much money u can spend anyway. Plus Gus ain’t rocking in with a Ferrari or sth anyway so enough is enough for a person like him.
Wasn't Viktor loyal to Gus? He was authoritarian for sure.
Very true, but while I owned and operated a business that turned over a million dollars a year my reality was; I earned less than some of my employees, I drove a nicer car because it was cheaper to buy the car through the business than give myself an extra $100 per week.
The real perk of being a business owner was the respect I got from people who could see what I owned, men were submissive to me women saw this and wanted me because of it. Gus wants that respect from the Cartel.
George Geo He killed viktor cuz viktor was spotted at gale boettichers murder scene by civilians
Yeah people seem to be overlooking the lesson behind the show - people like gus and Walt want power. The money is just a bonus.
The saddest and most indelible aftermath of Gus or any of the main characters is that, with very few exceptions, even if one truly wants to 'get out' you can't get out. You think you can but you can't.

I always wondered what’s the point of having all that money and never being able to spend it?
Exactly, might as well make less and live a more comfortable life.
It’s the power and feeling of being more worthy than normals, big reason why people want to get into this business
In the real world it's the self satisfaction that you do have it. In the universe of Breaking Bad Gus wanted to show that he could be as big or bigger then the Cartel with his own operation or at least as big as Eladio's faction.
Walter initial money needs to make his family live comfortably after his passing was round about 600k.
If he purchased the car wash and made another 600k on top, his wife could've laundered the money through the car wash and years after Walter's death, sell the car wash. Not sure the IRS would've bought the the gambling story tho...
Mike did it for his granddaughter and that i understand but Fring basicly made the money just to make the money
Controlled, calculated Gus strikes me as someone that doesn't see extravagance as a show of wealth and doesn't want a massive penthouse and a fleet of Lamborghinis. For him the extra wealth would have been spent purchasing the highest-quality goods and things he can enjoy, comfortably and safely spending his fortune. By contrast, Walt went on crazed spending sprees that displayed his extravagant wealth until Skylar convinced him to live more like Gus (not that that was her intention).
The real question is, where did he keep his money ?
It’s possible he was laundering all his money through Madrigal and buying shares in Madrigal with the laundered money.

Sam Walton drove an older Ford Ranger. See, eventually it is about the business not the money. Even Walt had all that money but it was about the business.
The video states that Gus made literally millions from from his legitimate business, but he still did cartel work. I think this just goes to prove that Gus really didn’t care about money, or his business actually, everything he did was all part of his extremely elaborate and detail-oriented plan to take revenge on the cartel, who killed his partner. That’s just how much he loathed the cartel, that he was determine to start a whole business and work his way up in the cartel just to get revenge.
If I could point out a few things. First off Walter asked if Gus was paying 20% to his mules and Mike said he didn't need to because he built his network over 20 years, but if you watch Better Call Saul you see earlier shipments from Mexico were much smaller than 200 pounds, there were 10 bags of meth when Nacho came to take the Salamanca's cut from the shipment, assuming those were kilos and not pounds it was closer to 20 pounds a shipment. Next Mike didn't become part of the operation until much closer to the end and it looks like Gus ran a much smaller crew, Mike even had to find the muscle for the security of the excavating team, so those costs would have lower over the first 18 years. Finally in this season of BCS there was a meeting with Lydia and Schuler about hiding the cost of building the lab from Madrigal, in fact even the lab equipment came from Madrigal, as that was a large part of how Hank became suspicious of Gus. And as Lydia was responsible for the shipment of the chemicals it is conceivable that Gus was getting those for free as well only paying to keep people quiet, loyal and working. Finally I would put the losses a bit higher as Gus has shown time and time again to care more about his business's future more than current profits, such as when he allowed his drops to get picked up by the DEA, but not risk his dealers getting arrested, or burning down his own restaurant to have Nacho gain favor with Lalo.
So on the meth empire side I'd say his costs were much lower, but so was his overall business gross, although he did say in the meeting with the cartel that he has done business with suppliers on this side of the border before and hasn't hid it from them. But it looks like he only really started making very big money only towards the very end, once again showing that true greed (or maybe relentless ambition and pride) even if not blind and well planned and thought out destroys you, which was pretty much a common theme in the show
Too long, didn't read
So, what would be your estimate for net worth?
Costs weren't as high, unexpected losses were higher, and revenue stream wasn't stable through 20 years - but kept rising from 20 pounds during BCS to 200 during BD.
I figure it would reduce by a significant amount, but still put him north of $250MM
Great analysis!
Well, Gus wasn't doing 200lbs/week but had 2have been doing more than 10 kilos/week. He was able to finance the construction of the new lab, including housing that German digging crew. In addition to paying Mike and Co for security. He also had that off site warehouse where all his trucks came/went.
Didn't read all either, but you wrong my man.. in BCS they were slinging coke not meth... In breaking bad then, it was meth.. where my likes???

As well as the fact Gus is a genius and almost single-mindedly obsessed with efficiency.

Great analysis but I think either A. Los Pollos Hermanos generates WAY more money than we realize. He is a big time philanthropist in the community(even donating to pay for an entire hospital wing)among other things so donating as much money as he does is gonna draw suspicion from people so he better have a good back story to explain how wealthy he is and if his legit business "only" made him worth 3.5 million I think it could make people wonder.
For sure, that’s just a conservative estimate. It’s likely los pollos is worth a lot more!
Plus he was KNOWN by the police is a big time benefactor! He actually was rewarded by some kind of police in the show lol
I've always thought that the point having a chain restaurant wasn't just to hide the meth business but also to launder some money. So Pollos Hermanos could have had officially some of the most profitable stores in the state.
Gus’ motivation for his illegal empire was mainly driven by revenge (at least based on what we know so far). He’s obviously a psychopath however still seems to operate with some sort of “moral” code based on respect. Why else would he offer to do what he did for Mike in laundering his money for the sake of his family? Hopefully more of his history will be revealed in season 6 of BCS.
Because he wanted Mike to work for him already at that moment. Not to do charity

Gus is probably the richest Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul character. Look at how many businesses does he own and he also seem pretty economize.
I believe it was explained in a BB episode that a pound of blue meth was worth at least $40k. Jesse said this was the price he could get when he was selling the stuff in the episode where they do the math on Gus' profits and Jesse gets pissed on how little their share is.
Gus was not selling that for the vast majority of the time he was operating though. So it wouldn’t change this too much
@@fawkewe
yeah but it was probably twice as profitable. In the show standard meth is absolute dogshit compared to walts quality. Like standard is like 60% maybe 70% like how the neo nazis made it.
Even Gale said that walts 3% difference in quality was like an ocean of difference chemically.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Gus was not taking profits in his meth business and using it as a way to destroy the Salamanca cartel. just using the profits to reinvest in either madrigal altogether or his own business to live out his husbands dream.
When Jesse bought a teenth of meth from Tomas and the 2 dealers it was $300 and a teenth is 1/16 of an ounce and an ounce is 1/16 of a pound so if we assume the dealers were selling it at he standard price a price for one lb would be 256 X 300 or $76,800

He could have maintained his lifestyle very easily with Los Pollos. Heck, he could have retired when the show was running, he propably had enough savings to life exactly as he had without lifting a finger anymore.
He's propably the kind of guy, who doesn't have any friends, Hobbies, really anything that interrests him. The only thing he cared was to make money for the sake of it. "Mi consejo: quédate con los pollos" - Don Héctor 'Tío' Salamanca
There was one line in the show that gave light that Walter and Jesse weren’t the only cooks, and that there was one more, so he was probably selling more than we could imagine.
We also have to discount the happy meals (chicken) he gave to the DEA ; ) I recall that, at some point, blue meth was also sold in Europe so, given the high risk, probably it was worth to go international.
Gus hid money in relatives names, the restaurant chain, plus he had to pay " hazard pay".
I had always wondered that where exactly Gus used to spend his money, his meth money to be precise, like he didn't own any luxury car, neither a palace like bunglow. And I don't think they ever introduced his family. I mean he could've easily lived a lavish life under Los Pollos, could've hired more security and perhaps he could've become more powerful than the Cartels.
Because he wasn't doing it for the money, he did it because he wanted to avenge Max, so using the money wasn't his main priority

Don't quote me on this, but I think drug prices went up double or triple.
I take exception to Gus being called a villian. Imo by season 4, Walt was t villain, which makes Gus t hero relatively. By t end of season 5 t Panzer Nazis were t villians, so Walt was back to being t relative hero that he was when he saved Jeese's life in "Half Measures".
But according to Mike, Gus Fring didnt need any mules because of his already set up distribution network from Los Pollos. Only Walt required mules to operate
But I think you forgot one aspect of Gus’s money. I believe that he had some sort of drug empire built up in Chile . He’s business in Chile is only mention in a few throwaway lines and is very vague but I believe that he had the cartels attention even before moving to America. And if you remember when Hank ran Gus’s name through Chile records he didn’t exist there was no record of a Gus Fring in Chile.
Very good ! I thought this channel had 240k subscribers, I misread
it SHOULD
If I recall, there are scenes where Gus is in an office on an intensive poultry farm. So is he also meant to own the farming side of things too? Then he's not got the outgoings of buying the poultry from a distributor, but he has got the outgoings of upkeep on the farm... it's tricky to assess the wealth of a fictional character, isn't it?
Oh man this narration is something
Great analysis
I would really love to see other Fiction character net worth.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Impeccable research man
Why is Gus even a meth kingpin? He literally makes too much money from his resaraunts.
Power
Admin Admin one of the most addicting drugs in the world
@Balkancuga try someone like Escobar who makes Gus look like a joke
Power and revenge. Gus is the tortoise of the fable, he took his time and built his empire over 20 yrs, pitty his desire for a cold-sweet-revenge was what ended up killing him. Should've killed Héctor years ago.
Please explain "too much money" for me! This phrase only makes only sense in the context "BLABLABLA COSTS too much money".
Great effort and nice idea for a video, liked it
"Gustavo Fringe didn't use mules" even in better call saul!
Ah ok, my bad. I thought that’s what the dead drops were about that mike and Jesse would collect.
@@LogicallyAnswered It's good awesome video man must of took some math espically comparing to real restaurants. And dead drops were mostly for money but product at least large amount were in the chicken trucks proceeded to be picked up by head of set crew eg Natcho. Just don't try to take 6 😂
Thanks for the clarification man!
Remember that Gus was originally supplying/dealing coke, not meth..as we see in Better Call Saul he is caught by Lalo cutting his coke (with 'locally sourced methamphetamine',) , which indicates he realised meth was more profitable and made him less reliant on the cartel coke during Better call Saul
Real question...did he actually have kids
It was shown that the only reason he is doing all of it is to make Hector suffer. He could've lived longer by just sticking with his legal side of the business, but that would mean that he just let Hector get away with killing his partner. He wanted to make Hector suffer that's why he saved his life and put him in a wheelchair to make him watch
Great video but I think you forgot to mention the costs involved with laundering the money. Ozark is all about that side of the business, its a pretty good show although not as great as breaking bad
you deserve more subs bro great video
I just realized that if Walter never came along, Gus would have stupid rich. I know he already is but I mean STUPID rich
Or if walt just got over himself and retired
@@strangebrew1231 he tried too but he knew gus wanted him dead
You're assuming los pollos hermanos started with 14 stores, it would have been an increase, the maximum wouldve only been the last few years.
Crazy thing is that Gus would be able to live the exact same quality of lifestyle on solely the restaurant income alone. Dude is never shown spending any of that big drug money from what I remember...
Dude had an helicopter, an 8 million drug lab, boughta bottle of champagne worth several thousand dollars. Never seen him spending his money in anything legal, but he spend his illegal money in illegal activities
BCS episode says Mr. Fring doesn't need mules because, well, his chicken trucks! There goes the formula.
Relief I found the error at the 3 minute mark. Saved me from having to hear the rest of that voice over.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend
Great breakdown but you forgot about the money laundering end. Taxes and fees.
"Is it worth it to have a billion dollar meth empire?"
*Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, China, and the US government have left the chat*
Wouldn’t it be join?
Great content!
This settles it, I'll be be venturing for a meth lab startup.
whenever gus raises his arms at the sniper, i always imagine a cut scene where he gets shot and the credits immediately roll afterwards
