I always thought it was kind of strange that he lived in such a nice house when he's basically a government employee. But for the time we knew him, he was always pretty high ranking and his rank only grew as time went on but still, that wouldn't necessarily mean that he would have enough to buy a house like that ON HIS OWN.
However, I think it's worth noting that Marie was also working as a nurse in the radiology department. Radiology being one of the most lucrative medical fields there is, especially for doctors. They work relatively short days and yet make doctor level bank. I can imagine their nurses are probably paid pretty well as well. So I thought between the two of their incomes, that is where it actually begins to make sense. That house wasn't completely paid off, either, it was probably being paid off via mortgage like most people's homes are.

Living in New Mexico would also help immensely. Part of the stereotype that FBI agents are underpaid is because the ones who live in the Washington DC area have a higher cost of living. If Hank lived in somewhere like Hyattsville, MD, or Fairfax, VA, he'd be decidedly average. And he'd look poor because he'd be living amongst houses owned by senators and lobbyists.

I have a feeling Hank did at least a tour of duty with the military prior to his law enforcement career - it’s not made clear but the show tends to be vague about that stuff, for example Mike being a Vietnam vet is only alluded to once AFAIK. He’s incredibly skilled with firearms and tough as nails when injured and under pressure - see his confrontations with Tuco and the Salamanca twins for examples of this. I’m not sure most cops and feds would be at that level of skill in combat without some military service under their belt. Plus, it just makes sense for the character - his whole vibe is way more former army/marines than college kid getting fast-tracked.
Only argument I would make against this is that Hank winds up with fairly serious PTSD after shooting Tuco, which a combat vet might have found easier to handle. But then, lots of veterans never actually fire a round in real combat and even if he had been fired at in Iraq or wherever, doesn’t mean he’d just shrug it off when it happens to him as a cop.

    • @unusualusername8847

PTSD isn't a given when serving in the military, it can occur during any form of traumatic event. If Hank did serve, it could be possible he served in a noncombat role or if he was in combat, he didn't face anything particularly traumatic in it. My father served in the Navy for 17 years and has been in combat against smugglers, yet suffers no PTSD as he didn't find the experience particularly traumatic.

You also gotta remember that Hank doesnt have kids, and his wife, Marie, is a pretty successful nurse, too.
Kids are another mouth to feed, and the mire you have, the more you have to split your money amongst them. But Hank's household has two well paid people with no particular responsibilities or dependants.
Hank just doesn't NEED to lose money. It just accumulates. Walt, however, had a son with cerebral palsy and a newborn girl, and his wife didn't work, so that's three rather large mouths to feed on a high school teacher's salary.
