My ex wife moved from Ames, Ia to here in Nebraska 15 years ago and she was amazed that we had to water our lawns. They get much more rain than we do here.
Your DIY irrigation video is how I found your channel a few years ago. It was the best DIY option I found, and I've been using it to water my lawn ever since. I've even evolved it to be 6 zones all set to hose timers and the result has been a lawn that looks just as good as my neighbors who have in-ground systems. So what I'm saying is "thank you!" for putting that video out there and for all the great videos since!
@@baxt1412 It's a little hard to say what my total cost has been because I tweak the system a little bit each year. But if I had to make an educated guess, it's probably around $650-$700 in total for all the hoses, heads, nozzles, timers, etc. This year I upgraded some of the hose sections to PVC that will just stay in place over the winter. That added some to the total cost, but now requires less effort to manage. And the total cost is still considerably less than a fully installed in ground system.
Ryan, it hasn't rained a lot in my area, and I see the clover trying to take over does that weed like the dry climate thanks and keep up with the good work. I live in Rockford Illinois. thanks again.
I'm in northern Illinois and I just decided to give up on watering my lawn. I tried for a month and I'm done. The drought is going to last a bit and it's going to be 95 this week, so I'm going to let it go dormant, hopefully weeds won't take over.
Love the DIY above ground system. Works like a charm. Do you ever have any problems with poa annua? Seems like I can't get rid of it. Especially if I water the lawn the poa pops up immediately.
I renovated my neighbor's lawn in the fall with perennial rye. We're in East Texas so I'm expecting to do a transition to something else when it gets hot. For the time being it is pumping. Do you think growth regulator, humic acid, and carbon applications could remotely be able to extend the growing season of PRG in the heat of Texas?
In California where it’s sandy loam, a lot of us have 2 times a week watering restrictions. Fescue seems to do the best dealing with it being 110 and watering 2x a week.
Your watering restrictions have to be really hard to deal with. It gets to 100 here in Nebraska too and sometimes I have to water twice a day. I feel for you!!
@@bruceshort8854 Thanks man, Root health is critical and any diseases and fungi will cause pretty drastic setbacks. Mowing high kind of works but if its 4" height of cut, the sprinklers also have 4" height so that creates problems too. It's definitely doable with the deep soak method but I envy areas that get some rain lol
I can’t wait to see your golf green. I would love to come help. I am an assistant superintendent at a private golf course and know everything about how to build a golf green and would love to just be a part of your project.
Ryan, what products for lawn care would you recommend for yards that chickens run around in and eat in that's safe for them and people for consuming chickens later.
I used to hook my well up to several impact sprinklers. They got so much calcium build up I would have to soak the in CLR so they would work again. It is that they wouldn’t oscillate and more
my old man use to bend a rebar into a heart shape and weld a street ell to the middle of the heart shape. one side of the elbow would have the hose fitting adapter and the other end pointing up would hold the sprinkler head. This way if your soil was dry hand hard you didn't have to try to push in a spike into the ground plus you can keep the water on and pull the sprinkler around.
Ryan, I have well water just like you but my water pressure is not as good as yours. Do you know what your PSI is and how you achieve this good pressure? What well pump or pressure tank do you have?
Not exactly sure on psi but I'd say 100 judging from how far I can make the sprinklers go and using a hose with a lot of pressure as well. It's just a 3/4hp pump and no pressure tank
Put down some Hydretain and will take out the nitrogen and replace it with sea kelp in my spoon feeding program in hopes to reduce watering needs of the lawn.
Glad to see you cover this topic with some greater depth. I noticed you put sprays on your plots. Kind of surprised you didn’t choose MP Rotators like you had at your old house. What was the strategy there?
Cool season grass here. I water the edges every night because I get heat from the driveway and on the street people's dogs urinate there and they walk on the grass. Seventy five percent of the lawn is in shade all day, so I don't water as vigorously there. I use wetting agents. Hydretain, and shampoo. The last time it rained for 3 days last week, I got a few mushrooms. Lat night I laid down some humic and fulvic acid, mixed with shampoo and phytoplankton. Mowing every two to three days and watching the lawn creep into areas with less grass. No weed control this year. Grass density is very high and it's choking them out. Mowing one level up. Almost all other homes are burnt along the curb and infested with clover, creeping Charlie, dandelions, and little fern looking weeds. All of our lawns were cut by telecom to bring lines to the house. All neighbors have a yellow strip to their house. Mine bounced back right away and you can't see the burial path. The lawn is very easy to take care of once you get a routine. It is less work and a pleasure to work on. Have a sharp blade for the best looking cut. Thanks for all the tips Ryan.
What app or apps do you use to keep an eye on things like humidity, dew point, evapotranspiration and growing degree days. Having a tough time on those last two ofcorse…
I use my weather station for the general stuff and ET I look at some local reports since I'm in farm country. I believe the greens keeper app will help with GDD but I'm not using any pgr at this point so I haven't needed that this season
Live in southern Alberta, Canada. Falls are hit and miss w moisture. Summer is definatley dry and hot. Trying too figure out the watering is a hàrd thing to figure.Any suggestions how long one should water weekly.

Square spacing is extremely uneven. Areas will have 2x, 3x and 4x overlap. Triangle spacing has only 2x and 3x overlap. Using 3 heads on a rectangle is more efficient than 6. You have more difficulty in wind with 3 but the coverage with spray heads is better. VAN heads are also better than fixed nozzles. Rainbird plastic impacts with the coloured nozzle pack are also the most uniform at full distance. Clean jet with a tight arm angle side spray. Almost zero head flooding at the base.
@@ryanknorrlawncare thank you sir. I was looking for it on my local and couldn’t find it so I was just browsing around and actually found it on the weather channel app for my area.
So a little off topic but I’m curious what level of lawn addictions everyone has on here. Hi my name is Paul . I’m a lawn addict. Got hooked this season. Send help
In addition to good watering practices, I recommend applying Hydretain during summer months. It helps the lawn retain more moisture by capturing water vapors that isn't available to your lawn, that are formed when your ground water evaporates and condensing them into water droplets which your lawn can use. The chemistry is similar to how to desiccant silica works. Note that you will still need to water your lawn, Hydratain will not magically create moisture, it does make your watering more effective by capturing some of the water vapor from your ground water that would otherwise be wasted.
I feel like I would time it to scalp it and core aerate just before dormancy and then put down seed heavy in those holes when it goes dormant and level it like an inch or two with more seeds and water to build good soil
Hey Ryan. I really miss your old videos a bit. Its way too much tips and products and stuff. Sometimes ist just nice to see the lawn getting mowed or dthatched. Sprinkler coverage is something that’s often overlooked, but is vital in the summer for cool season
Weather here has been strange. Very cool temps and great rainfall. Night and day from last year when everything was depressing.
Plots are looking awesome RK. Enjoyed your last podcast with RD, you guys are a great team, two pods a month would be sweet 🤞🏻
