Suggestion: if tech wise you're able to do it, specify, in text, which type of grass you're talking about. When you move from one place to another, it's easy to lose track of what type you're referencing.

Bill bugs are responsible for those small spots. I get them every year in the same spots along the edges of my lawn. Pre emergent doesn’t work for some reason but as soon as I see a spot I spray the area and it doesn’t spread.

Relatable Tips from Full Summer Lawn Update
-Don’t edge driveway or sidewalk to prevent burning
-similar soil type (more sandy) here in NJ
-more brown seed heads and stalks than before
-the lower the blade/cut height is more beneficial for Rye
-Keep it as short as possible to train seed heads
-small and more frequent fertilizer dosage
-Enjoy the time in your yard!!

Just for the hell of it you should take a portion of your tall fescue and reel cut it at 1 1/2 to 2 inches. I have been mowing my RTF lawn with the Allett Stirling at 1 1/2 and it really looks good. A lot of people say you can't mow tall fescue that short but with your wide audience you could debunk this. I'm always wearing your "I rather be mowing t-shirt".

I re-seeded an area of my backyard that had gotten torn up in a patio installation back there (they drove a bobcat back there), and unfortunately, the grass that came up was a different type than what the rest of the yard is. I used Scott's Turfmaster I believe it's called, but didn't check the ingredients on the bag first. My friend who used to run a lawncare business confirmed it was a fescue, and I'm thinking the rest of my grass back there was originally primarily bluegrass. What's interesting is, the bag that I used lists Ryegrass first, then a couple fescues, then bluegrass third in the ingredients. But it does look similar at least to the tall fescue you point out in this video, and like you said, it is a tall cut grass that does well in heat, not much water---this grass is standing several inches taller than the surrounding original grass, even though we haven't had much rain lately (I'm in central IN). Probably going to kill it and re-seed again, just never ran into this problem before. I guess you do have to pay attention to what you're putting down! lol

I did a lawn renovation in my backyard last fall as the weeds were claiming more and more of my yard each year. Started with the backyard since this was my first time ever, taking on such a project. Came back with fescue which is what has been planted in the area of NC for generations. Everything was looking good, then late fall / almost winter, deck removal / patio installation happened. Wished I had nixed them reseeding the areas that got messed up during the patio installation, because I have no idea what that was they planted but 1) it was totally different than the fescue with it's much wider blades and faster growth rate (looked like stuff that would be planted in a cow pasture) and 2) by the time summer hit it was dead any way, which didn't bother me in the least, since I have other plans for the largest area (flower / shrub bed). The fescue that I used for the reno is definitely stressed (brown). We've had basically no rain and have been in the low to high 90s for days. Should have started back watering weeks ago but kept thinking rain was coming.

My 10 month old ryegrass lawn is doing well in Oregon. I did have a fungus issue (which I mis-diagnosed as grubs for a few months), but now a few weeks post treatment things are starting to look better. We are having 3 days of 90+ weather, and one day might hit 100. This is very unusually hot weather for us, and it's going to be very dry. My neighbors non-irrigated lawns are still green, but they are also MUCH more established than mine.

So far still looking pretty good. I have Barenbrug Turf Star RPR Perennial Ryegrass(yes it actually spreads on its own! They also have rhizomes Tall Fescue as well). I have a few areas wanting to try to enter a partial dormancy that are in full sun locations in my backyard, but are hanging in there with a little extra watering. Seeded the backyard last fall and went ahead and renovated the front this spring May1st(summer temps lol) came out great though so far. Watering 1-2in a week split into 2 waterings. I live in the panhandle region of Texas so our humidity is usually pretty low, so soil and foliage dry out quickly. Current H.O.C. is .625 , 5/8in. Cutting every 2-3 days max. Also since May 6th we have had 90-110°F highs and 60-75°F Lows with only a few days dipping back into the 80°Fs for highs and still the best looking lawn in the neighborhood. Ryegrass is far more resilient that people give it credit for. Though if you have low humidity and little rain fall, regular irrigation is most definitely required.
I'll probably be over seeding with Kentucky bluegrass in the fall to give it a little bit extra durability and faster repairing of any bare or patchy areas that may appear time to time
Ps. For anyone in Texas wanting to plant Ryegrass as a permanent lawn and not just winter color. I wouldn't recommend any farther south than about Lubbock, Texas, I'm personally a bit farther north than that myself and have had year round green lawn thus far.

Been having a good year compared to past seasons, mostly because I have been following the channel since last fall and have been applying what you have been teaching. I overseeded in the spring, and two areas that have never grown for me in the past are flourishing this year. The watering has helped significantly, and that is due to the DIY sprinkler system I followed your guidance with. A couple of dried-out areas, likely because of not enough water (the sprinkler has to go around a tree, and is not watering that area much). Been alternating between a granular mix (25-5-10, with added Iron) and a humic acid/sea kelp liquid application every couple of weeks. The plan is to do another overseed in the August/September timeframe, hopefully with my Landzie roller, which I ordered but am waiting for delivery (back-ordered). I haven't gone to reel mowing yet, but am considering it. For now, just keeping it under 3" and enjoying the greener lawn.

After a few seasons up here in Ontario Canada, I was able to mostly eliminate the dandelions and weeds from the lawn and make it thicker and more pleasant to walk on.
I am seeing more creeping charlie coming in and do my best to pull them from the main roots, but with the restrictions in Ontario for chemical use on our lawns, it has been very difficult to manage.
Any ideas on how to remove Creeping Charlie from lawn without chemicals would be appreciated.

Great video... I have noticed those dried out seed head stalks in my lawn also... they seem to pull right out when you tug on them and that made me think there was something wrong (insects or fungus). I put down preventative grubex and diseasex mid june to avoid issues and then noticed the lawn had a more dry and burned out look after application. And now the the temps in the 90s I don't know if my front lawn is going to make it past mid July and my front yard is mostly tttf. Every time I look out there is some other condition trying to turn my lawn into hay. But I will just keep at it and try different things... as long as my lawn looks better than most of my neighbors I'm happy... but I wouldn't call it dominating at the moment... I have to just wait for autumn overseed and then I should be dominating again! Love your content Ryan... you and Allyn really gave me the confidence to do my own lawncare and my lawn (although far from perfect) never looked better. Thanks.

Professional landscaper here. It comes down to preference but I like to do a 50/50 cut with my lawnmower first and trim after. When I go to trim along the edges near the cement, I'll flip my trimmer upside down and just hover it so it's not hitting the ground but trimming the grass. Never dig your lines once you set them or each time it will recede until it looks off. Trimming your lawn is like framing a picture. It's what honestly makes or breaks a good residential cut.

The next situation is I plan to dethatch for the first time and overseed after. Just not sure about whether to do the entire lawn (about 5,000) square feet versus just doing the front this fall and the rest next. Not sure how long the process will take as a whole. I'm going to be using a Greenworks 14" dethatcher, as you have used in previous videos.

If you find that billbugs is the problem with yours as well, I would love to see a video on how to take care of the damage and fix the problem. Thanks as always.

my spring new K31 TTF seeding in 'dead dirt' between sidewalk and curb full sun did horrible as soon as I mowed taller for the heat, but in other areas it did fine .... I think the issue that caused it to fail there was I just had way way too much seed down in that area(seeded it a few times in the slow to warm up spring) as I notice now in spots that got less seed did better with more space to develop, and where it was so thick to start only did good when shorter .... I might start over with better seed or mix something in this fall with an over seed

Try 5 to 6 tablespoons of dish soap per gallon of water and spray on the problem spots. The soap causes the bugs to get irritated and crawl to the surface. When they do, birds, animals and other bugs will eat them and rid of your problem. I do this every time the grub cycle happens with my lawn.

I also have a lot of brown stocks right now in my yard. I’ve been cutting my grass at 3”. I’ve been nervous to go much lower in the summer. I seeded this spring with a 70/30 mix. I generally use a 50/50 but it seems like the supply stores have been a hard time getting that.
I’ve been watering twice a week at the moment giving at least a 1/2 per application. During the real heat I throw an extra day of watering in there. Not sure if I should be doing more or less?

My bluegrass does the same. I had a dead rye yard that I brought back with a KGB blend last year. One of the cultivars in the blend is almost black blue (not sure which one but maybe midnight?). But yeah I have dark spots that stick out from the 25 year old rye that was left. Hoping to blend it this year with a more aggressive overseed and core aeration.

    • @justinjones5281

@@Casey_87 also to add to this I’ve been noticing the same trend on my grass. 25 year old home with unkept lawn for 23 of them. Got down and identified 12 species living in my lawn. Annual bluegrass(poa) , three types of KGB, annual grab goose grass, fine fescue thick blades thin blades, tall fescue. Long story short the highest concentration is rye, like yours. Hard seed stalks everywhere so burnout is eminent. I’ll try your thought out and get a mono strain KGB aeroate overseed and continue to do this three times a season till it dominates.

I Redid 2500 SQ FT back yard last October KBG PRG and red fescue mix. I had to keep mow height of 4" this spring . Yard was excellent until rye grass seeding.
