I have never watched it prior to making this video but with the newly uncovered "Saban Moon" (American, semi live action, Sailor moon) I decided to watch the original pilot and then dive into the American Sailor Moon that never was. Consider this my application for my Sailor Moon Fandom Passport.

Yes Queen Beryl is the main villain of the original too. In fact her and all of her generals are named after minerals, Beryl, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoicite and Kunzite~ :D

From the amount of nostalgia, I'm surprised Netflix hasn't tried to greenlight a live action version of the show (Which there already is from Toei Japan and unironically the best adaptation for the first story arc of Sailor Moon. If you know Super Sentai, it's that but the writing is like a drama show each episode.)

Codename: Sailor V was a manga published before Sailor Moon, it's some kind of predecessor. It wasn't adapted to anime (a direct-video anime was planned, but never made). Sailor V was integrated into the story of Sailor Moon as Sailor Venus.

The American version is mostly known as Saban Moon, but actually Saban didn't have anything to do with this. xD It's a common misconception. It was done by Toon Makers and Renaissance Atlantic. Back then anime was rather new to the West and publishers didn't wanna adapt them, because they thought the cultural difference was just too big. But they saw that Power Rangers was a massive hit, which was a heavily edited and partly remade version of Super Sentai. So I get why they came up with the idea of remaking Sailor Moon for an American audience, though it seems ridiculous nowadays.
Oh, by the way, I don't think the song at the beginning is the actual opening. It's a music video that wasn't part of the episode. It had been floating around for a while on the internet in bad quality (that's how people knew this thing even existed), but Ray Mona was able to retrieve a better version.

Also fair to note is you mentioned controversy around the dub. I’m sure it’s been mentioned multiple times by now but that was in regards to the original 90s dub of the anime. When Sailor Moon Crystal was announced and going to be released Viz brought the rights and completely redubbed the entire anime. I thought, maybe, it could be fun and interesting to compare the original dub (if you can find it) to the new dub kind of like you compared this version to Saban Moon. You could also react to Sailor Moon Crystal which much more closely fallows the manga.

How fitting to talk about Sailor Moon, the anime by Toei is over 3 Decades old. Way back when the Big Breakfast on Seven Network in the 90s, the original English DIC Dub aired in Australia (before Cloverway dubbed the 3rd & 4th season, not the 5th & final one until Viz Media got the rights in 2014) and yeah looking back i like the voice actors, but man the censorship, some of the dialogue, acting is very well 90s & skipped EPs too.
Queen Beryl the one with the orb is the main antagonist of the first season and Jadeite is one of the Four Heavenly Kings and he's the bland one of the 4 introduced is the one sent in Youma (translated as monster) to gather Energy for their "great ruler." Also Tuxedo Mask is here because why not.
Avery your hairstyle is similar to Usagi/Sailor Moon too what the heck? The Transformations & attacks are also well known because Magical girls genre.
As a massive moonie who’s loved the show since I was like five, not only am I excited that someone else wants to enjoy, seriously more the merrier, I never got all the “true fan” stuff in fandoms, but I’d love to see you react more to the show. I know it can be a bit long and their is a lot of filler in the 90s version but it would be interesting to see a new fans thoughts on important moments in the show. So many of us have been fans since childhood and for so long it would be fun to see someone get to experience the story for the first time as an adult.

Great video, I never watched Sailor Moon either until I was in my early 20s and now I'm a big fan. I really relate to that 'secondhand nostalgia' feeling you got, when I watched it for the first time. I experience that with Dragonball too, neither of those anime (or really any anime) aired in my country when I was a kid, so I never saw them.
Yeah I spent my teen years in the Tumblr era and even today fandom spaces can be toxic but every SM fan I've met is so kind and I've had a lot of fun in the community so far. Thanks for watching! 😊

As a Sailor Moon Fan since the 90s I very much welcome you into the fandom. This was an awesome video. While the American Sailor Moon might not have been the best I get it this was a pitch pilot not everything was set in place this was just to show what they were thinking of doing. I just hope that if this were to become a full series back then that they would make it more clear as to what is actually going on in it. Cause it seems like the live action girls transform into there cartoon forms but..Later on we see The girl who is Sailor Moon daydreaming in class so It's like is the cartoon part actually happening? Is this a story her and her friends are making? Is this all in her head? Is she actually from the moon or does she wish she was from the moon? There are so many questions. Honestly I kinda wish now that if they could not use the Sailor Moon name in the end they just change the outfits and names of there hero forms and just went with it anyway. This could have been a fun cheesy piece of 90s history. Also the live action segments Kind Of give off Babysitters Club Vibes. Not so much the movie that was made for it but the original 90s TV Series. Anyway this was another Great Review as always Avery I can't wait for next one. Also I am defiantly adding this to my favorites lists.

between this, barbie and ghostbusters, disability representation was a huge trend in kids media at the turn of the millenium it didn't catch as much steam as cultural representation, which was a mainstream thing for 30 years at that point and allowed some cultural appropriation and orientalism ; and lgbt representation which could have been used for shocking value at the time

No matter how many times I rewatch it, I always think the original/first English voice actress sounds strange. Fun fact she only voices the first 20 episodes or so and then left because she thought the show wasn't going to take off lol

I used to watch Sailor Moon on Cartoon Network's Toonami, when I was a little kid, and I like that the American pilot version was never picked up as a series and I thought it looked weird. I also like The Big Bang Theory tv show!

I think the approach is less of a snobbery of Japanese media (although there was a lot of that) and more of a realisation that we are two very distinct cultures and that something that makes sense to a certain audience will probably not be taken in adequately by another
a lot of times with anime, there are cultural references and jokes that mainly the citizens of japan will get and understand. so when an anime gets dubbed into English, they have to alter the dialog to fit the American culture so we can understand it better. that's why people have issues with dubbed anime cause some of them don't translate the cultural differences as well as other dubs.
Yeah I will say I've seen nearly three quarters of sailor moon in its original Japanese and I totally see the difference in watching it in its native language. I'm trying to get better with subtitles but it can be hard with my ADHD especially with anime since it's so colorful and eye catching haha

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Usagi/Sailor Moon in the anime is more of a crybaby compared to her manga & even the 2003 live action counterparts. I think Mercury, Mars & Venus are drastically different, Jupiter is kind of the same of the main 5 Sailor Senshi.

Oh man, I remember watching this as a kid. There were quite a few anime broadcast in Ukraine in the 90s and early 2000s, though the only other one I can remember is Sakura (or Cardcaptor Sakura). It was pretty fun, you should check it out and maybe review it if you like it :)
P. S. The American live action remake reminds me of those goofy 90s shows about magic like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Out of This World :)

new moonies are always welcome oh and also 2 things 14:52 yes mini skirt is very weird on a 14 year old but i like to think of it as a bathing suit with a skirt or more of a more covered original wonder woman out fit and besides in my opinion it better than the sailor star lights outfits and 2 if you ever wonder what order to watch each series i recommend
90s anime -> the 90s anime movies ->the manga-> crystal( but skip season 1 and 2 cus they suck)->then the eternal movies

I used to be obsessed with Sailor Moon in 1996 (weirdly specific year). It ended with a huge cliffhanger/identity reveal and then was immediately canceled in favor of Sonic the Hedgehog and I was traumatized. I've since discovered better anime but Sailor Moon will always be my gateway drug to the genre.
I really appreciate it for influencing the genre so much. I'm excited to make more sailor moon content in the future.

While the DIC dub does have it issues in the censorship department, there still some pretty good performances (particularly by Susan Roman and Stephanie Beard). Plus its the version that helped the franchise breakout to the U.S. and hate for it to become lost media.

I have vague early memories of this show. I think my brother, cousins and I watched the dubbed cuz that was what was available on Sat morning TV
I think we watched this "ironically-but-actually-not-ironically" due to some limited view of masculinity and societal expectations denying me, a young boy, genuine enjoyment in a show with strong feminine female protagonists
Though, I think we viewed Powerpuff Girls differently; they just looked like circles fighting a primate

Yeah, I didn't know that there was more than one english dub until posting...this is the remastered one from hulu.

From what I understand they would Westernize foreign media because they thought Western audiences (mainly kids) couldn't handle seeing stuff from other cultures rather than snobbery (although I wouldn't be surprised if it was part of the reason) either way it's iffy at best

I think when they remastered the show, they changed the voices bc I definitely don't remember Sailor Moons voice being high pitched. 😲 The one I grew up hearing was Terri- voiced in 1995. No wonder it sounded so strange to me. Lol

The original Sailor Moon looks interesting, the american version looks like it should've stayed in whatever portal of hell it came from (who thought turning anime into live action/american style animation was a good idea?). I think sailor moon shares the same costume designer as the stay puft marshmallow man (look it up, you won't be able to unsee it). I'm still disappointed the great Bob Newhart appeared in that big bang abortion of a show (maybe he was going through a rough time or owed someone a favor). Mornings are good for nothing..except bacon and thank God you can have that any time. Cute hairdo btw 🐼

Okay... so the show is actually targeted towards teens but the *old* dub made it a children’s show and had some really weird censorship. No joke they turned a lesbian couple into cousins which considering these were *major* characters we had to hear this a lot. Even during the dating game show episode.
Oh boy...I've heard take of the infamous "kissing cousins". I know the show gets a lot darker but I do love how it got a genuine scare out of me. 😅

Also some side info, Sailor Moon and the other four of the main Sailor Scouts are apparently 14 year old freshmen in high school in the beginning (or whatever the Japanese equivalent is) and they actually do introduce a white cat later in the season, his name Artimis. Also, despite its censorship, a lot of fan are trying to preserve 90s so that it doesn't become lost media itself. After all it was the version many grew up with.
