I took the family out to the sunshine skyway bridge (mouth of Tampa Bay) for crabbing. It would get very competitive with some people and those long nets, I would get defensive (territorial), but didn't need to, as I purchased small cast-nets for my 2 sons (age 7 and 10). A 4' net with 3/8" mesh was perfect for my young boys. It was humorous, as My boy's would throw out past the reach of the netters, and catch the crabs, long before "those" people could reach them. My son's enjoyed it so much, that we stayed the entire tide change (until 2:00am in the morning). We easily caught a 5 gallon buck of large blue-claws, and my mother steamed them up (lots of Old Bay seasoning), followed by picking them the next morning.

Looks like a blast buddy! Not sure if this helps out or if it would work. When I was a kid picking up night crawlers with a regular flashlight was tuff. They would run away at the first sight of the flashlight. Some smart person recommended I use a red light. Night crawlers couldn't sense it. Maybe a red light for catching crab and shrimp would work without scaring them? I wouldn't have any experience with this though. Good luck!
