    James, I really enjoyed this video as I have decided that the awning/tent for my VW is going to be too big and unnecessary for my road trip around Europe in Velma, so I'm looking at finding smaller, quicker and lighter options and this has been a great help. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

      Sounds like it's tent shopping time for you then, Stu! I'm glad this video gave some helpful info. Feel free to drop me a message if you think there's anything else I can help with 👍 Thanks for the comment. James.

    The OEX is a great little tent. Used it many times. Effortless to pitch. Good fade resistance. Nice quality poles. 5000mm water repellent.
    Zip jammed solid on tent fabric (my fault) and fell on top of tent bending poles when drunk (definitely my fault)
    Will be replacing tent imminently with same model.
    Not sure what justifies spending 5x as much unless Base Camp on Everest is on the cards.

      It's good to hear from a long-term user (which I certainly am not). I'd be pretty outraged if my tent couldn't stand up to drunken attacks. Send it back at once 😂

    The biggest different between the tents is you can buy a tent, a backpack, sleeping bag and sleeping mat all for the same price of a Terra Nova Southern Cross 1.

    • @joinmeoutdoors

      That is true! I also know a man who can buy all of those things for the price of an OEX Phoxx II 😂😉

    That sky!
    The second hand market is strong so as you said, tents hold their value better than you'd think. Not like you lose a huge amount of value if you use it a handful of times.
    I really like the look of the SC1 but I like to get my pack in the tent with me, and I don't think you can do that with the SC1?

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 года назад +1

      The sky almost looks fake doesn't it? Light levels were all over the place 🤣 I'd say you wouldn't get a rucksack inside the SC1 with you, no. I don't think I've brought my pack into any of my tents - it always lives in the vestibule. Is that to keep it off the wet ground? I may treat the SC1 to a footprint this winter time - solution!

      @@joinmeoutdoors I’ve had a secondary foot injury metatarsal 😣so I’m still on the mend. Doing ok and feeling better but it’s a more ligament/joint related issue. I think it was a knock on from the broken toe changing the geometry of the foot slightly. It’s the next toe over from the break. Hopefully only a couple more weeks. Desperate to get out. Shouldn’t be long now. Might be interested in that phlox II.

      @@unclepeteswildadventures Oh I'm sorry to hear that, Pete. Those secondary injuries can seemingly come out of nowhere. It sounds like you're getting on top it though, so heal up fast 👍 The Phoxx tents are real performers in windy conditions, and represent seriously good value for money. Is this the beginning of an almighty tent collection? 😉

    Hey buddy, nice review, odd tents to compare, but actually, I totally get where you're coming from, it's great to have a comparison between 2 totally different tents and I have the Terra nova pioneer 2 and the naturehike cloud peak 2, different aspects I like about both, the price for a start, but sometimes paying a bit more does pay dividends. Great video buddy but where was the food cooking? Only joking 🙃 😬

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 года назад +1

      Haha no food once again, sorry Richard! Yep these tents don't really occupy the same area in the market, but they are both 1 man tents (in my eyes) that you can happily take wild camping. I hope you'll have the Pioneer out for a try out soon! James.

    We have the same gripe about the phoxx2v2 regarding the zipper, i found it annoying. There version i bought does have the outer part of the tent connected(i know some were modding it before), it also has 2 zips but for some reason it has a zip stopper that stops you moving both of the zips to the top, i dont really understand why. i guess they revised it so now its the Phoxx II v2.1

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  4 месяца назад

      That's interesting, so the latest version comes with the inner and outer tents connected now, for an all-in-one pitch? Double-zipped doors are a great upgrade, though I don't understand why they'd limit them at the top like that. I'll have to keep an eye out for one the next time I'm in Go Outdoors 👍

    • @gravy1219

      @@joinmeoutdoors yeah and the way it attatches seems strong too, they also extended the sleeve the pole fits into and removed 2 of the clips that hook onto the poles (i beleive the older one has 2 clips on each side) the zip is weird at the bottom it has a zip that can move about a foot and a half, so the zips have to meet at the bottom there when the doors are closed, no idea why, great tent though, i had the nyx 200 before that hated that thing, felt good putting it in the bin!

    Hi , back in the day when i was a leader for the DofE gold groups , we always bought Vango Hurricane's ( 2 man) . Do they still do that tent. As i remember it had Alumin poles and was really easy to pitch , even in the worst Scottish weather. Glencoe January and survived!!

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 года назад +1

      Hi Angus. You must have a fair bit of experience under your belt! As far as I can tell, the model name "Hurricane" has been dropped by Vango now, but it seems to have had a few iterations over the years. I bought myself a Hurricane Alpha when I was about 10 years old in the early 90s. Apart from a split pole and some elderly seam tape (both of which I'd like to sort out), it's still a perfectly good tent. Glencoe is as good a place as any to give a tent a thorough test!! Thanks for watching James.👍

    The main thing for me is the pitch in 1 I'd say that's my main deal breaker.also 1 person tents I'd rather carry the extra weight and have a lot more room and the extra vestibule.but when just starting out I agree don't spend 2 much until you know you like it then yes I'd say pay the extra money and get a quality tent

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  2 года назад

      Pitching in one just makes it all so easy, doesn't it? I fully understand people wanting more space - particularly if the weather means you end up stuck in your tent for a long time. Thanks for watching 👍 James.

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! I released this video 1.5 years ago. I bought my Southern Cross 1 from Cotswold Outdoor for £360 last year. It was £420 on the website, and I then got a 15% discount with my National Trust membership. Prices have changed since then, but the tents are currently £490 on the Terra Nova website. If you're looking to buy one for yourself, and if you feel that my videos have helped you in your research, you can follow the link in this video description to take you to the Southern Cross 1 before you order it. I would then receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you!). If only they could still be bought for under £400, hey? James.
