  • Today I learned to dock start my Ono Swift 175 setup. I've only been able to dock start a wing in the 1800 sq cm range prior to this. Hopefully what I learned can help you learn to dock start as well.

    Great video! May I suggest that learning to dock start you wear a helmet as you're very close to the edge of the dock.
    If you fold backwards you're going to have blood in the water and staples in your skull.

      Definitely a good idea! In this video I have a bump camp inside of my hat. The aim of it is to prevent stitches from being hit by the foil rather than impact though.

    This thing is ridiculous! It's missing the motor and propeller! ;)

    Two Cheers for the girlfriend. My wife would have packed it in after Take #10. She's a Keeper ;)

    Love the video thanks. technique you are using is very similar to what i've been trying. I'm at the point where i often land decent, glide, get a few pumps and sink. Had a couple where i pump out and get about 10 or 15 seconds. I am using a small board (94cm Axis tray) just cause its what i have from kitefoiling. Very little volume. Would I be better off with a board with some volume? I sometimes feel im coming off foil with speed and might be able to pump out if board was more bouyant. I'm about 70kg, probably around 8 dock sessions, and lots of kite and wing foil experience. What size/volume board would you recommend? Thanks, Mike

      You may be able to recover from a touch down easier with a larger surf foil board but I would say there is no reason to get one just for dock starts. The tray foil boards are ideal for handling them while running and pumping.

      @@justthewingtips Ok thanks so much. Glad I just stuck with the tray. Much more consistent now and it really is a dream to run with, pump, and manage getting back up for another try.

    These look super fun.
    How do people usually get into this? Do you just buy one and commit to it or what?

      Usually getting towed behind a boat is the best way to learn.

    • @briansmith207
      @briansmith207 2 года назад

      But yes it takes an all in commit!
      And he said big foil. Axis 1310. Or 1150.

    • @testaklese
      @testaklese 2 года назад

      @@justthewingtips that makes sense. But I meant more like how did you get introduced to it? Do you have to know someone who can let you try it out? They seem a bit pricey, so just buying one seems like a big commitment.

    did you try dockstarting on the 230?

      No. But I’d imagine it would be the ultimate dock start wing. 200 beach starts easy

    Generally speaking I feel like jumping and having a time when you stop applying pressure on the foil is making things way harder. (And I learnt just the way you do there).
    I think of you manage to learn more on the board while you run and walk on the board without jumping and keeping your hand in place until you feet are settled would make things easier because you would be able to run faster and conserve much more of that initial speed. On the video I feel like you manage to overcome the difficulty of this launch because your stubborn enough and your very advanced pumping skill.
    Note that it's easier to lean on shorter boards while running.
    It's not a comparable context but just to be sure you get my point ruclips.net/video/8-JJ6iPQSys/видео.html
    Did you try that ?

    • @justthewingtips
      @justthewingtips  2 года назад

      For me I’d need a lower dock. It was too hard to run hunched over.

    • @yohann.roussel
      @yohann.roussel 2 года назад

      @@justthewingtips yeah sure, but in the end you manage to take 3 steps with your hand in place, so the only difference would be to just walk on the board keeping your hand in place instead of jumping. Maybe I'll try to find a high dock like yours and see if I can manage that or if there's an additional difficulty to it.

      @@justthewingtips in fact the fall you show at 1:13 is really close to it, I would just keep the hands pushing on the board until the feet are settled. Do you think you wouldn't be able to have the sufficient initial speed doing that ?

    • @justthewingtips
      @justthewingtips  2 года назад

      @@yohann.roussel That would've been the ideal way to do it but I couldn't jump on without letting go.
